world. it is friday, october 14th. i'm christine romans. we begin this morning with the january 6th house committee escalating its showdown with donald trump. >> our institutions only hold when men and women of good faith make them hold. >> committee vice chair liz cheney closing down the hearing calling for them to subpoena the former president. trump is not expected to comply. jamie raskin tells cnn's jake tapper, if he's innocent, he should. >> but even if he thinks that it was a righteous manifestation of pro trump sentiment, then he should come forward if he really wants to be the musi linnie of a mass right wing populus movement. he should come forward and explain that. >> cnn's jessica schneider has

meet. let's bring in a former federal prosecutor. the former president has posted on truth social that he will respond at 8 a.m. today with a couple of insults thrown in there. what are the president's options here, katie? >> well, obviously this subpoena was a unanimous vote to have trump respond to these allegations that have been laid out here. practically speaking, i don't think we can expect him to actually testify. he can take the fifth amendment. he can fight this on other constitutional grounds. i wouldn't expect a substantive response but i think he would respond in some way. >> there was so much to unpack. cassidy hutchinson has been a prominent witness behind the scenes. here's what we heard from her yesterday. listen. >> he said something to the

i don't know about a potential indictment. i don't know if that's necessary when you show at such a high level all the folks that were initially on trump's side, if you will, that changed their own mind. i think that was the point of the committee. if these people can change their mind knowing all of this, then certainly i think that sends a strong message to the electiorae in general. >> there was so much in the january 6th committee and then you zoom out and there are around the trump orbit some 7 different probes going on. this parallel probe, do you think they did enough to bring charges against trump at this point? >> i think that there's a big calculation that would have to be made if they're trying to move forward in a criminal way. a criminal loss will be very, very devastating. i think the committee has done an outstanding job in demonstrating how reprehensible his behavior was. whether it crossed the line into

a criminal act that can be proven beyond a reasonable doubt is a completely different discussion. i don't know if it's necessary in terms of achieving the goal if that's the over arching concern. >> nice to see you. have a great weekend. the supreme court rejecting an emergency request from donald trump to intervene in the classified documents case. the court denied the request with no noted dissent. that means for now documents will stay out of the reach of the special master. new york's attorney general wants to block the trump organization from moving assets. in his $250 million lawsuit, leticia james says they were involved in rampant fraud. on thursday she filed a motion for a preliminary injunction. the state the same day announced

expletive from her father. her mom covering her face in anguish. elon telling reporters what he thought of the outcome. >> i'm disgusted with our legal system. i'm disgusted with those jurors. >> reporter: the jury foreman said three jurors voted against the den pat any at this. one of them because cruz was mentally ill. it was one of 40 mitigating factors to persuade jurors that death wasn't the appropriate sentence. other mitigating factors, that cruz had been exposed to alcohol and drugs in the womb and that he had been sexually assaulted by a peer. >> what went through his mind is critical in sparing his life. >> those only seemed to draw fury from parents whose 14-year-old daughter gina was shot four times. >> pressing the barrel of his weapon to my daughter's chest, that doesn't outweigh that poor

domestic disturbance. a third officer seriously injured. >> our men and women of the bristol police department are privileged and honored to serve on the front lines protecting and serving the community of bristol. that's what these heroes did last night. they answered a call to duty and they responded without hesitation. >> police say the man was shot and killed. they've ordered the flags lowered to half staff in honor of the fallen officers. a suspect is in custody in the fatal shooting of a veteran las vegas police officer. the clark county sheriff says officer trom tai was killed after he and another officer answered a call thursday morning about a domestic disturbance. a judge in west virginia blocking part of a federal law that prohibits possession of a firearm with a serial number that's been altered, obliterated or removed.

says one thing and do the other, we've now heard for a number of days this persistent noise from moscow about diplomacy, about perhaps finding a way out of this. given the pressure putin is under domestically to make a public statement saying goodwill is required to find a way out of the situation, that is a change in tone certainly in the past days while they unleashed those waves of missiles, the nuclear rhetoric we've had in the past, that has lessened the response from the west to what potentially might occur if russia used nuclear weapons. that has been very forceful and very public. you just heard the e.u. former policy chief there. a change certainly. you may hear more from putin in kazakhstan. he's meeting with his turkish counterpart there. this is a new move towards diplomacy. it's one whether they respect.

she wants low taxes. she wants less redistribution of wet. whichever way you look at it. it's mounting in back ventures and think there's no way we can win near election with this prime minister. how are we going to out the trust? it doesn't mean it will happen or happen soon. there are questions about mechanism. she's safe technically for a year. there's chancellors and elders that could get together and could they be ushered in to replace her? this just underscores the political and eeconomic peril.

americans are squeezed by the cost of living. that's been true for years and folks tell me they're being squeezed. a lot of people hurting these days. today's report shows that in progress. >> that's president biden trying to find the positive in a positively grim. consumer price index rose 0.4% and 8.2% on an annual basis. that annual number is slowing slightly. look inside the numbers and core cpi excluding volatile food and energy, that was the biggest gain since 1982. on wall street, stock index

futures right now leaning a little bit lower. they've been jumping after this dramatic turn around for stocks on wall street. "the wall street journal" notes it was the first day in history. the dow plunged at least 500 points and rose at least 800 points in the same day. stocks dove on that report showing core inflation accelerating. it shook it off and meantime the fed's crusade to crush the inflation has driven mortgage rates to the highest since george w bush was in office. the average coming in at 6.92%. investors on pins and needles. several big companies including dick's, jpmorgan chase. and gas prices overnight fell a penny at $3.90 a gallon. let's bring in scott graves. scott, i mean, stock markets do not reflect, of course, what's happening in the economy, but

what happened yesterday, what happened yesterday? that was the craziest day i remember seeing really maybe in my career. >> yeah, i know, certainly, christine. it was a wild ride. i would expect to see more of that potentially going forward here. we're entering this point in the cycle where it's going to be very difficult to interpret the data. we see a negative number like the cei print which could suggest maybe things aren't as good as we think. there's the expectation how will the fed react to that? the markets are trying to digest all of this information. kind of at a bit of a turning point for november. backward looking indicators will see old strengths and forward looking with red signals. we're starting to send some signals that consumers may be pulling back a little bit quicker than people were expecting so buckle up. it's going to be a wild ride here for a while. >> yeah. i think you're absolutely right. we're going to get new data on

retail sales. it will be important to see how companies are fairing. they've done pretty well through covid, the pandemic and now higher interest rates. we've got six months of higher interest rates. should we start to expect to see that in these numbers a little more? >> i think so. i think we're entering that stage. we've seen it already in the housing market. it's clearly going through there. interest rates are the first to react. we're going to see the broader effects on demand over the next six months or so. i'm focusing on the fourth quarter. i think we're seeing that. we'll see how that reacts. earnings are a bit of a lagging indicator here. we've got a ways to go. >> consumer sentiment you point out closely tracks gas prices here. gas prices have come up a little bit. they're way off their highs from the summer.
