tv   CNN Newsroom With Ana Cabrera  CNN  October 28, 2022 10:00am-11:00am PDT

10:00 am
hello. thanks for joining us on this friday. i'm ana cabrera in new york. we're standing by for an update from san francisco police on the brutal attack inside house speaker nancy pelosi's home. officials are expected to speak any moment. we'll bring that to you live while we wait. cnn is getting chilly new details about the assault. a source telling us the assailant shouted, where is nancy, before going after her husband, paul, with a hammer. the speaker was not in san francisco at her home at the time of the break-in.
10:01 am
the suspect is in custody. i want to get straight to jamie gangel on the phone with us after getting new information moments ago. jamie, what are you learning? >> ana, in addition to having been told that before these were occurred, the assailant confronted paul pelosi shouting, quote, where is nancy, where is nancy. we now are told that the assailant was trying to tie up the speaker's husband, quote, until nancy got home, is the exact quote. these are from multiple sources who have been briefed and that when the police came into the house, the assailant was saying, quote, we are waiting for nancy. once again, we don't know the entire motive for what happened today, but there certainly is a
10:02 am
concern about violence, threats to political figures and from this reporting, he clearly was focused on the speaker of the house. >> jamie, i know you're going to gather more information, bring us the latest information. we will, of course, be bringing our viewers this press conference with law enforcement officials. let me bring in evan perez to bring our viewers up to speak about what we've learned in terms of the timeline in this attack. >> yeah. this attack occurred about 2:30 in the morning local time there in san francisco. the speaker was not there. if she were at the home, there would with be normally a u.s. capitol police detail.ere becau was here in washington. that's the back drop of how this occurred. the attacker, according to our reporting, entered the home
10:03 am
through the back. he came in with a hammer and attacked the speaker's house, paul pelosi, 82 years old. according to the speaker's office, he's being treated. they expect him to make a full recovery. bul but some of the reporting you're hearing from it jamie gangel is one indicator of where this investigation is going. we know the fbi is now jointly investigating it with the capitol police and the san francisco police department. and the reason for that is because what is emerging is a very disturbing picture of an attacker who was focused -- appears to be focused on the speaker of the house of representatives. of course, that makes it possibly something that the fbi is going to take over eventually as a crime they're focused on. and at this moment, we know, obviously, they know who he is. he's under arrest. they have been looking through his social media. they're getting a picture of, perhaps, something that could
10:04 am
indicate his motivation. and, of course, the fact he appears he was focused on the speaker is, again, one of the drivers of this investigation at this point. of course, we can't talk about the back drop, the greater back drop of political threats that have been going on around the country. everything from, of course, school boards to the attempted assassination of a supreme court justice and of course now the attack at the home of the speaker of the house of representatives. and this is what the fbi has been very much concerned about. and i think you're going to hear a little bit about that at this press conference that should be starting any time now. >> evan, stay with us. manu raju is on capitol hill. what is speaker pelosi saying about this? >> they've only commented through a spokesman so far. the spokesman indicated -- laid out essentially what en laid out in his reporting. that someone broke into their
10:05 am
home at night, overnight, that attacked paul pelosi, who's being treated in the hospital, expected to make a full recovery. the speaker herself was not in san francisco at the time. she was in washington. that is a significant part in which a lot of the lawmakers are reacting to privately and has gotten a lot of attention. the fact she has security detail travels with her. that does not extend to lawmakers' families. also security does not extend to beyond the leadership in both the house and senate side, among republicans and democrats. rank and file members don't have that level of security as well, leaving them open to security threats. leaving -- opening up some questions about what else should congress do to enhance security at the time of rising threats and rising violence against members of congress. against family members of the speaker of the house. the president reached out to nancy pelosi today.
10:06 am
the white house said in a statement that president biden did connect with the speaker, conveyed his concerns, conveyed his wishes for a speedy recovery for paul pelosi as well as the senate democratic leader, chuck schumer spoke with pelosi, according to a statement from him. we heard from a spokesman for kevin mccarthy, not mccarthy himself, he tried to reach out to the speaker. it's unclear if they connected as well. mitch mcconnell issued a statement. the political world on both sides reacting to this really shocking attack against the speaker's husband and wishing him a speedy recovery. >> manu, stay with us. i have chief ramsey, former d.c. police chief can, charles ramsey, also former commissioner in philadelphia. chief, entering through a back door with a hammer, shouting, where is nancy, even going so far as to try to tie up her husband until nancy got home. what does all this sound like to you? >> first of all, the good news
10:07 am
is he's expected to recover. and an 82-year-old man attacked that way, this could have turned out to be very different. fortunately, it wasn't. it does highlight an extreme problem that we have in this country with the political violence being threatened. over and over again. at all levels. whether it's school boards, members of congress, or what have you. the number of threats have dramatically increased. it seems like the climate is just continuing to get worse. hopefully everyone really tones down that rhetoric. this is not going to improve on its own. you hear a lot of people hear these things and take actions like you saw occur today. and it's just going to lead to someone being not only seriously injured but, unfortunately, could lead to someone being killed. >> chief, let me ask you about how this investigation might unfold. we have capitol police, fbi, san francisco police, all conducting
10:08 am
a joint investigation here. how do you expect that to play out? who handles what? and if speaker pelosi was, in fact, the intended target, how might that change the investigation? >> well, i mean, we're going to find out more, obviously, when chief scott gets back and i imagine the fbi and representative from the capitol police will probably be at this press conference. a lot of this will probably fall on the san francisco police department. unless there's a nexus deterrer but the fbi will play a critical role, no question about it. they will work together. that's not unusual having served as chief in washington, d.c. we have investigations where we had a variety of agencies that would have to come together and work together. that's not unusual or uncommon. so everyone will do all they can to get to the bottom of what took place. right now, since they have him in custody, i'm sure there are search warrants being executed,
10:09 am
i'm sure on his home, mab a vehicle, whatever, interviewing people who may know this individual. they're going through his social media footfootprint. there's a lot of things taking place right now that all these different agencies are involved in trying to gather as much information as possible to see whether or not anyone else is somehow involved in this. >> there's a lot we don't know, which will be hoping to get answers to when we listen into this press conference. as far as what we do know, want to bring our viewers up to speed. a male suspect is in custody. police have not identified this person by name but they say he entered through a back door into the home in california of nancy pelosi. she was not there. she was in washington at the time. but her husband, paul, was. and we are told he was attacked with a hammer. and that the assailant was shouting, where is nancy, and tried to tie him up until nancy
10:10 am
got home and said something to the effect of, we are waiting for nancy. so as we await this press conference, chief ramsey, what are the questions you have right now as an investigator? >> well, i want to nor more about the attacker and whether or not -- i know we've got a statement, where's nancy, but there's more to it than just that. i'm sure this happened at 2:30 in the morning, so the wheels have been turning for a long period of time now and investigators have had access probably to a lot of information. not all of which they'll make public. but i'm sure they'll have an awful lot of information and it will shed a lot of new light. we need to know the motive. we need to know why. what was it that drove him to do what he did? i mean, it's fairly, at least i think, somewhat obvious that, you know, the attack was really not directed toward mr. pelosi, but he was looking for, you
10:11 am
know, the speaker, who fortunately was not at home at the time. but these are the kinds of things they have to get at now. that is try to find a motive and whether or not there's anyone else involved, did anyone else know this was going to take place? these are the kind of questions i'm sure investigators are trying to get answers to. >> evan, you did read that statement, talk about how nancy pelosi's office has said her husband is expected to make a full recovery, but his injuries led him to be hospitalized, at least at the time that this unfolded. do we know who called police given that this attacker apparently was trying to tie up paul pelosi, attacked him with a hammer? how were authorities notified? >> that's one of the details at this point that are not clear. we know that it appears at least from some of the initial reporting that he had -- that the home has a security system, which is, of course, very common. and that's one of the things helping authorities in this
10:12 am
investigation. typically a lot of security systems have alert systems, so if someone broke, perhaps, broke a window or something to try to get into the home, it would automatically trigger a call to police department. that's how a lot of these things are made. again, at this point, we don't know exactly who called the police, but it seems they got their very, very quickly. it is an address that would be familiar to the san francisco police because i'm sure they have to help provide security for the speaker when she is there. the capitol police arrive as her detail but they also get the local police to help provide some additional security. so it is an address that would be in their system and they would know to respond very, very quickly. we're told by the capitol police, by the way, that they arrived very, very quickly. the detail wasn't there for the speaker, but because they have to go to that address very often, they have a regional office there that does provide support. they were able to respond very
10:13 am
quickly to that scene. again, we expect to hear a little more from the police when they do this press conference in the coming minutes. it is one of those questions that i think is still -- we're still uncertain about. >> our chief political analyst gore gloria borgers is with us. what's going through your mind as we discuss this and we talk about the threatened -- the heightened threat environment we're in right now? >> absolutely. in a way, politics has always been a dangerous business, particularly at the top levels. we know that. at this point, i think it's become a very dangerous business. and i'd like to make note of the fact that nancy pelosi's house was attacked from the outside with graffiti after the stimulus bill was passed. and a pig's head with blood was
10:14 am
left outside. this isn't the first time. that was in january of 2021, i believe. so, this isn't the first time that we've seen this happen to nancy pelosi. but given the rancor in our political debates and i've heard people like adam kinzinger talk about this, you know, people will say, yeah, what do you expect? this is terrible. as mitch mcconnell just tweeted, it's disgusting and we all wish paul pelosi well and we wish nancy pelosi well. and, you know, she's been reached out to by republicans and democrats, but, you know, the decibel level of our politics at this point is kind of unacceptable around the country. i think that's why so many people are saying, you know what, i can't do this anymore. then when you look at this, when you look at an 82-year-old man, presumably sleeping at home,
10:15 am
being attacked, somebody allegedly trying to go after his white, what are we to think about what our politics has become? i've covered politics a long time. it always has been dangerous to a degree, but i think now after january 6th, the capitol police are reporting a hugely increased number of threats against members of congress. and i think we have to start paying attention to what's happening in our country. >> please stand by with us. we're awaiting this press conference in san francisco with authorities investigating an attack at the house of nancy pelosi, leaving her husband, paul, hospitalized. expected to mick a full recovery, thankfully. we're learning more about this attacker and what unfolded. stay with cnn. we'll bring you this press conference just as soon as it begins. you're live in the cnn newsroom. with upwork the hiring process is fast and flexible.

we're standing by for an update on the brutal attack inside nancy pelosi's home. officials expected to speak any moment. we'll bring that to you. cnn's evan perez, manu raju, charles ramsey, gloria borger all back with us. evan, i understand you're learning more about the person in custody. fill us in. >> that's right, ana. we know the fbi is aware and they know the identity of the suspect, the person who was arrested there at the home. and one of the things they've been doing in the last few hours is going through this person's social media to get a better picture and understanding of his state of mind, perhaps get an
10:21 am
understanding of the motivation. some important reporting we've heard just in the last half hour from jamie gangel indicating the tackle not only said he was there to try to attack, try to get to the speaker of the house, is another reason why the investigation is something the fbi is very involved in. they are jointly investigating this with the capital police, with the san francisco police department. just taking it from a random local crime to something that is a lot more, obviously. and so that's one of the things going on behind the scenes. we're expecting to hear a lot more from authorities at this press conference in the coming minutes. it gives you a sense that, you know, some of the things you heard from jamie and her reporting gives you a sense of what the fbi is uncovering at this hour, the last few hours, as they investigate the motive for this attack. the idea that, perhaps, this
10:22 am
person was motivated to go to the home because he was searching for nancy pelosi, the speaker of the house. and, perhaps, again, going through that person's social media, they've gotten a sense of the political motivations that may at least have played a role in some of this. again, that is part of the reason why the fbi is now heavily involved in this investigation. >> manu, i'm curious, how much information about the comings and goings of lawmakers is public? >> it really depends on the lawmaker themselves. some are public about what they're doing. some less so, often during the campaign season we do see a lot more public activity among candidates, people running for office. it's important to know those members, those candidates, they typically do not have their own level of security. even in this time of rising threats and rising violence. we have seen this violence take
10:23 am
place from the time of when gabby giffords, congresswoman from arizona, shot in 2011. she survived getting shot in the head. we saw in 2017, republicans who were practicing at a baseball diamond, a shooting that occurred there, injuring steve scalise, house republican whip. we've seen even more recently pramila jayapal, congresswoman from washington, a democrat, a man was arrested outside her home with a gun. that happened just a few months ago. these threats can have been occurring with the -- over years. they have been escalating over time. even so, a lot of members don't havethy own personal security detail. they don't have it with their family members. security detail doesn't extend to her family but she has a level of protection because of her leadership. since january 6th there's been
10:24 am
discussion, movement to allow federal funds to be used for these members' own protective security detail if they want and some have chosen to beef up security in their home. others simply have not. it is a mishmash approach to security among leaders of this country, among the rank and file members, people who make our laws. a lot of them simply recognize there is a serious risk to their own personal safety and to their families' safety as they're campaigning in public and doing public events. >> gloria, you've been monitoring lawmaker reaction. does it seem that other politicians are shaken today? >> yeah, it does. of course it does. this isn't the first time they've been through this. manu mentioned when steve scalise was severely injured when he was trying to practice for a baseball game. we've all seen the fact that somebody was trying to hurt

justice kavanaugh. it wasn't just on capitol hill, it was at the supreme court. when leader mcconnell tweets that he's horrified and disgusted about what occurred today, and nancy pelosi has received outreach from both democrats and republicans, i'm told, from one republican source, who said to me, i am sick about this. this isn't about politics. and i think that -- i think the question we all have to ask is, what's the level of acceptability of any of this? have we just learned to live with this? political violence in this country has been on the rise for the last year. some say it's since 2016. some say particularly since after january 6th. as manu was pointing out, not every member of congress has the security that nancy pelosi is entitled to as speaker.
10:26 am
and i think that they're all feeling the danger of this. whether you're a democrat or republican because it's happened on both sides of the aisle, quite frankly. nancy pelosi is a well-known figure, speaker of the house. she wasn't there. she travels during congressional recesses. are people tracking her? this person obviously thought she was at the house. i think law enforcement has to take a hard look at what resources, particularly on capitol hill, they can afford or want to put into member protection right now. a and. >> does security for you lawmakers need to change in light of this? >> certainly needs to be reas reassessed, no question about that. i think everyone needs to understand, it takes an awful
10:27 am
lot of personnel to really provide around-the-clock protection. right now at a time when police agencies across the country are suffering from staffing shortage, it just adds to the complexity of the problem. something has to be done. the threats go beyond the leadership, goes beyond members of congress. gloria mentioned justice kavanaugh. so, it really is a huge problem, and i think part of that solution is going to be allowing for federal funds to be used for private security if needed or wanted by members. local police and the capitol police will not have the personnel to provide that kind of intense round-the-clock security. >> just coming back to this specific incident and what we know at this time, chief ramsey. this is an assailant who attacked with a hammer. that's just brutal.
10:28 am
what does that tell you about this individual? >> the fact he used a hammer, that by itself really doesn't tell me a whole lot. i've seen those kinds of stacks. they are very brutal. and mr. pelosi is very, very lucky that he didn't sustain life-threatening injuries. a hammer attack is very, very brutal. you know, so that was the choice. fortunately, it wasn't a firearm. but, obviously, it was a person who was intent on doing harm. he may not have been the direct target. he was there at the time. certainly the speaker, fortunately, she was not at home. >> chief ramsey, i'm going to interrupt you because this press conference has begun. let's listen. >> information officer for the san francisco police department. in just a few minutes, chief william scott and district attorney brooke jenkins will be

10:30 am
good morning. we'll go ahead and get started. good morning, everybody. my name is chief bill scott with the san francisco police department. at approximately 2:27 this morning, san francisco police officers were dispatched to the residence of speaker nancy pelosi regarding an a priority well-being check. when the officers arrived on scene, they encountered an adult male and mr. pelosi's husband, paul. our officers observed mr. pelosi and suspect both holding a hammer. the suspect pulled the hammer away from mr. pelosi and violently assaulted him with it. our officers immediately tackled the suspect, disarmed him, took him into custody, requested emergency backup and rendered medical aid. the suspect has been identified as 42-year-old david depepi. mr. pelosi and suspect were
10:31 am
transported to local hospital for treatment. this is an active investigation currently being led by the san francisco police department special investigations division. we are working closely with our partners from the fbi, the u.s. attorney's office, the u.s. capitol police and our district attorney here in san francisco county, dea brooke jenkins and her team. the motive for this attack is still being determined. mr. depepi will be booked at san francisco county jail on the following charges -- attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, verbal, and several other additional felonies. before i go any further, i'd like to thank the responding officers for their swift action this morning. those san francisco police officers are officer colby wilmis, officer kyle cagney and
10:32 am
sergeant edmund huang and our emergency dispatcher for a really amazing job. for inquiries regarding mr. pelosi and his condition, we refer you to the statement issued by speaker pelosi's office this morning. and with that, i'm going to turn it over to our district attorney, brooke jenkins for a few brief comments. let me say in advance, this is what we know at this time. we'll update you further but we will not be able to take any questions after this statement. >> thank you, chief scott. i do want to commend the san francisco police department for their immediate response to this home and for swiftly making sure that mr. pelosi was okay and that the suspect was apprehended. we are working closely with them right now with respect to the investigation and will proceed with the appropriate charges as things unfold, as long as -- as well as work with the u.s. attorney's office and our
10:33 am
federal partners. thank you. >> thank you all for being here. i know you may have -- we'll update you when we have more. >> do you know how he got into the house? >> that's it for right now. we won't take any questions. our office will be issue, a news release very soon. that's it for now. thank you. >> we'll wait for that news release in the hopes of learning more details. a very, very brief update press conference with the san francisco police chief. bill scott, who told us that officers were dispatched around 220 local time there in san francisco to the home of speaker nancy pelosi. her husband was there at the time when they arrived with the suspect. he said both were holding hammers at the time. it sounded like, if i was understanding it correctly, you heard as well, that when they arrived, the suspect then attacked paul pelosi with the hammer and then officers moved in and apprehended him, both
10:34 am
paul pelosi and the suspect were taken to an area hospital where we're told paul pelosi is expected to fully recover, according to the statement we got from nancy pelosi's office earlier today. we also learned the identity of the man in custody. 42-year-old david depepi is his name. we don't know much about him but we have learned he will be booked on several potential charges, including attempted homicide, burglary, elder abuse and others. i think that sums up the new information we got from this press conference. let's bring back some of our guests. i'll start with you, evan perez. just bring our viewers up to speed, now that we have a little bit fuller picture on what we know at this hour. >> yeah, it appears that the police were responding to some kind of wellness check. it's not clear what triggered that. whether it was a security system or whether that was some other reason that, perhaps, mr. pelosi was able to get someone to get
10:35 am
the police to go to the residence. but the fact is police were inside the home and they saw, according to the police there, they saw at least part of the attack take place, which was mr. pelosi was holding the hammer with the suspect, and they saw him carry out at least some of the assault he is now charged with. they were able to take custody of him. we have now gotten a better picture, a little better picture of the suspect. some of our fantastic team , ou investigative team here at cnn has been looking into his social media presence. they talked to people around him, people who know him. and they paint a very disturbing picture. somebody who has been obsessed with everything from political themes, 2020 election, for instance, they've been -- he's
10:36 am
been posting youtube videos concerned about the 2020 election as well as the january 6th investigative committee, the house committee investigating the january 6th attack. there are some religious themes are some of the videos and so on he's posted on social media. again, it sort of gives you a little bit of the picture of why, you know, the -- there is now this investigation that involves the fbi as well as the capitol police and the san francisco police department as they're trying to get a handle on the motivation. it's clear from what jamie gangel has heard from her sources that the attacker went there looking for the speaker of the house of representatives. she was not there. obviously, she was -- if she were, his -- her detail would have been there with the home, at the home. but she was not there. that's the reason why the police when they arrived, there was no other security and they interrupted the attack as it was
10:37 am
ongoing. again, a very scary scenario for an 82-year-old man fighting off an attacker, now identified by police as david depapi, 42 years old, we're told and someone who was posting very actively on social media with a lot of conspiracy theories, everything ranging from covid origins to things related to the january 6th investigation by the january 6th committee there in the house of representatives. >> and an aconvey tans telling cnn he seemed out of touch with reality. our chief ramsey is with us again. your reaction to what we're learning about this suspect, chief. >> well, we didn't learn a lot about the suspect, but that's because there's an all-lot going on right now behind the scenes. you do have a name and i'm sure search warrants have been
10:38 am
executed. they already probably, obviously, have gone through all the social media they can. so, there's a lot of things that have gone on right now. it seems to me, sounded to me when i was listening to chief scott, that perhaps a -- the alarm was triggered when the person made the entry into the home. when you have high profile individuals like the speaker of the house or someone in your jurisdiction, your computer-aided dispatch system, your cad system would flag that address. so if anything came up at all, whether it was a phone call, whether an alarm or whatever, that would be a priority one response. he called it a priority a, that's what they call it in san francisco. that's get there as quickly as possible. lights, sirens and so forth. so, that would get a very, very rapid response. that very well could have been how they knew that something was going on and they responded so quickly. >> why do you think they gave so little information and didn't take questions?
10:39 am
>> well, because they have a lot of work yet to do and they don't want to put out any information that's not 100% verified. there's a lot going on behind the scenes. you don't know if this person -- you don't know answers to a lot of that. you do know chief scott is one of the best police chiefs in the country. i know him very, very well. right now they're the lead on this. behind the scenes, believe me, the fbi is a major player in this along with the u.s. capitol police. they're trying to see whether or not there are other people that, perhaps, when they go to his website, there could be other names that were there and they're checking and making sure that they have adequate security. i'm speculating a bit, but you don't know what they may have found that would cause them not to put out any more information than they already have. so, things will be coming out over time, no question about it. >> manu raju, we know as we're
10:40 am
learning, this particular suspect was posted these conspiracy theories on social media, on platforms like facebook about covid vaccines, the 2020 election, about january 6th. and of course, there is sort of this conspiracy theory cloud that continues to hang over our political discourse right now. >> and our team, cnn investigative team has gone over a number of these conspiracy theories in which he was listed. some are still on the campaign trail today. one that he posted was about the my pillow ceo, mike lindell, saying that the 2020 election was stolen. he posted apparently multiple videos from the my pillow ceo making that false claim we hear, the former president make, as well as some others. he also posted some -- apparently some transphobic images. he linked websites falsely saying the covid vaccines were deadly. he attacked the january 6th
10:41 am
