tv   Campaign 2024 Fmr. VP Pence Speaks at New Hampshire GOP Womens Luncheon  CSPAN  June 7, 2022 9:01am-9:30am EDT

9:01 am
>> next, remarks from former vice-president mike pence on the recent shootings in uvalde, texas and buffalo, new york at a luncheon in new hampshire. [applause]. >> good morning, new hampshire. it's good to be back in the granite state. less than six months away from when we win back the house, win back the senate, reelect governor chris sununu across the country and start the great republican comeback in 2022. [applause] >> and i want to thank -- i want to thank the new hampshire federation of republican women's remarkable young
9:02 am
president, elizabeth gerard. i'm going to make a note to never follow elizabeth gerard at the podium again. would you join me in thanking this remarkable young woman for her love for this country? [applause] >> elizabeth and i have gotten it know each other a little bit. she is a standout rising star not just in new hampshire, but in the republican party all over the country, but she knows me well enough to know the introduction i prefer is a little bit shorter. i'm a christian, a conservative, and a republican in that order, and it's my honor to welcome you back to the lilac luncheon 2022. [applause] good to be with you all, truly is. before i begin, allow me to speak to you today, first and foremost not as a former
9:03 am
vice-president, but as a father, a grandfather and the husband of a 30-year elementary school teacher. [applause] >> the bible tells us to mourn with those who mourn and grieve with those who grieve. and our hearts are broken by the unspeakable tragedy in uvalde, texas. we're saddened by the loss of life of the little ones, two heroic teachers, the entire community, it's on our hearts and in our prayers. what happened this week was an act of pure evil, deranged perpetrator who met his fate swiftly. closer to new hampshire, we also grieve the loss of life
9:04 am
that took place just a short time ago at the tops supermarket in buffalo, new york and express our deepest condolences for the family of that community as well. not surprisingly, president biden and the democrats have already sought to politicize this national tragedy with predictable calls for gun controls. well, guns are not responsible for these heinous crimes. the gunman who committed these acts are responsible for these heinous crimes. the truth is the most violent, lawless cities in america have the most stringent gun controls, eroding the constitutional rights of law abiding citizens is not the answer. but i believe there are
9:05 am
answers. during the trump-pence administration in the wake of the tragedy at packland high school, we forged a bipartisan solution that received almost unanimous support in the congress. it was called the stop school violence act. it was endorsed by gun control advocates and the nr. it provided funding to institute safety measures in and around public schools and helped teachers and law enforcement personnel identify individuals prior to violence. my fellow republicans here in new hampshire, i say to you here in my heart, while the left returns to their usual argument after such tragic moments in our national life, we should come together, we should make our schools safer, we should address the scourge of mental illness, we should strengthen families, support law enforcement and end the
9:06 am
scourge of mass shootings in our schools, our churches and our public places. [applause] >> with the crime wave besetting many of our inge ma -- major cities i hope we can put an end to defunding police, and put our law enforcement with the way they deserve. finally, even though many democrats demean it, say they don't want to hear about thoughts and prayers, i want to encourage you to you that are inclined to pray. pray for these grieving families. pray for all the citizens of uvalde and buffalo who are suffering loss. pray for all of our students and teachers and pray for all the people of this country
9:07 am
because whether it's fashionable to say it or not, those ancient words are still true today. if his people are called by his name and humble themselves and pray, they'll hear from him and he'll heal this land as he has ever done before. so let's pray, let's pray for all of the american people. [applause] >> thank you for that. but it is great to be back in new hampshire at this 75th annual lilac luncheon. which actually was a lilac brunch until we reached noon. many of you came to the lilac luncheon, but i want to thank elizabeth gerard and all of the great -- all the great republican women who have contributed to this. to jane, to janine, who is not here. to augusta patrone who has made such a difference. republican men and women in new hampshire are setting the pace
9:08 am
for republican women in america. and speaking of republican women and leaders that i so deeply admired. it is my great privilege to be here today with one of the great examines of the conservative cause and her time and service in statewide office and also the extinguished service in the united states senate. would you all mind getting on your feet and thanking kelly ayotte one more time for her lifetime service for new hampshire in america. [applause] >> and it's great to be here today he called me and said he would be out of state. i would honestly say, i was for chris sununu before it was cool. new hampshire has a great governor and i know republican men and women are going to re'leicht governor chris sununu come this fall here in the
9:09 am
granite state. it's also very special to gather today on the eve of a very important day in the life of our nation. you know, there's a day in november when we remember those who served and came home. there's a day in the spring when we remember those who served and did not come home. it will soon be memorial day in america again. senator ayotte mentioned i'm a -- i'm the son of a combat veteran who served in korea u.s. army and the proud father of a captain in the united states marine corps and one of my unworthy son-in-laws is a lieutenant in the united states navy. [laughter] >> we honor them. you know, anytime my dad ever talked about the korean war and the medal he came home with on
9:10 am
his chest, he said the heroes were the ones that didn't come home. so today i want to express my profound gratitude to those to made the ultimate price for freedom. and i want to thank mary, goldstar, who is with us here today, extraordinary service to this nation. to her and all the goldstars in the nation, thank you for your service and your sacrifice. [applause] >> it's good to be with you all. my life has changed a lot since we were last together. it really has. karen and i moved back to indiana and we bought five
9:11 am
acres and a pond. i got a john deere mower. [laughter] >> now, the guys in the room are jealous, 54 inch deck, zero turn radius, 24 horsepower. i haven't hurt anybody yet. one of the good things about being vice-president, you get to drive your own car. one of the bad things is, you get to pay for your own gas. as i mentioned, i became a grandfather in the last year which has been one of the greatest joys of my life. [applause] >> we learned a great truth. you can be a congressman from your home state for 12 years, you can be the governor of your state for four, you can even be vice-president of the united states of america, but you're still going to wait 25 minutes for a table olive garden saturday night at 7:00.
9:12 am
it's true. [laughter] >> it happened. when i told my daughter charlotte about it and she texted me back and said, that's america, dad. and boy, is she right. but i came here today to this great renewed tradition the new hampshire federation of republican people just to say thank you, thank you for growing our party across the granite state. thank you for doing your part to rescue america from the downward slide the democrats have put us on. thanks to you, the republican party has never been stronger and i know we're on the road to victory in 2022 and we're going to win back america in 2024. [applause] >> i mean, truthfully, all across this country, believes are on a roll. i mean, in the last election in 2020. we actually, despite our disappointment, we actually
9:13 am
still gained 15 seats in the congress. nationwide, we gained 10 million additional votes with your support. the highest vote total of nigh republican ticket in history. the highest proportion of african-american and hispanic voters in 60 years. [applause] >> and in just the last year, you heard a little from this podium already. the republicans elected an attorney general, a lt. governor, and a governor in the blue state of virginia. [applause] >> and in new jersey, my personal favorite, within new jersey republicans have the biggest gains in two decades, including a truck driver ran against the senate majority leader. he raised $150, half of his budget he spent at dunkin' donuts and he defeated the democrat majority leader of the new jersey state senate.
9:14 am
[applause] >> and i'm a traveler all over the country and i was in san francisco literally the week, i was speaking at stanford, university and almost everybody stayed. [laughter] >> but i was speaking at stanford the very same week that the most liberal city in america voted out three school board members that were spending all of their time trying to rename schools instead of reopening them for the families in the bay area. [applause]. >> i'm telling you. common sense is making a comeback. the american people are stepping up and reclaiming our future and the republican party is leading the way. you know, i've seen these incredible results all over the country and i believe we're on the verge of great things. i think we have a once in a lifetime opportunity, i really do, to build a governing coalition that could last for generations. i want to speak to you about
9:15 am
what it will take for us to do that in short-term and in the long-term. and the truth is every indicator out there proves the american people want their lives back. they want their freedom back. they want to see our nation back on the path of security and prosperity that we forged during our season. the democrats are getting the message, too, you get that impression, folks so far, 30 incumbent democrat house members in congress announced they won't be seeking reelection. that's getting while the getting's good. but let's be clear-eyed about the opportunity that we have. i mean, i think we are looking at a tidal wave on a scale we haven't seen since 2010. and maybe since 1994, but it's going to take all of us to do it. we've got a fight on our hands.
9:16 am
our 40th president ronald reagan said freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. we didn't pass it on to our children in the bloodstream, it's to be fought for and handed down. >> and i'm happy to say that's what we did during the trump-pence administration, we protected and fought for freedom of every american, every day and we've got to tell that story of that record to the american people between now and election day. [applause] >> you think about it, in 48 months with your support, the trump-pens administration achieved the louest unemployment, highest household income, most pro american trade deals and most security border and the strongest military the world has ever known, we did that. [applause] >> we revived our economy with tax cuts, rolling back regulations, seven million good
9:17 am
paying jobs, we became a net exporter of energy for the first time in 70 years. we finally held china accountable for decades of trade abuses, we reduced illegal immigration at our southern border by 90% and confirmed 300 conservative judges to our federal courts at every level, including justice neil gorsuch, justice brett kavanaugh and indiana's on justice amy coney barrett. [applause] >> and i couldn't be more proud to have been vice-president in the most pro-life administration in american history. [applause] >> men and women, we may well stand on the verge of a new era in american life, an america wherever life, born and unborn, is cherished and protected,
9:18 am
including those three justices that our administration saw confirmed, with the help of senator kelly ayotte, i might add. [applause] >> we all know about the draft opinion. my hope and prayer is that the draft opinion of the supreme court soon becomes the majority opinion published of the supreme court and we send roe versus wade to the ash heap of american history where it belongs. now, there were those who will say before and after that decision is pub published by the court, that overturning roe versus wade is somehow banning abortion. i'm pro-life, i don't apologize for it, but let's be clear. overturning roe versus wade is righting a historic wrong and
9:19 am
when it happens, we will simply be returning the question of abortion to the states and the american people where it belongs. [applause] >> so we stood for our values at home and fought for american jobs and security and abroad we stood with our allies and stood up to our enemies like never before. during our administration we crushed the isis cal cali fate. and our administration moved the capital to jerusalem. what we used to call promises made and promises kept. how times have changed. in one year the biden-harris administration has unleashed a tidal wave of policies at home
9:20 am
and abroad and frankly, democrats have moved so fast, sometimes i think the left hand doesn't know what the far left hand is doing. [laughter] >> all kidding aside, we now have the worst border crisis in history. inflation is at 40-year highs. gasoline prices are up 75%, new mothers can't find baby formula. crime is skyrocketing in many of our major cities and the disastrous withdrawal from afghanistan has emboldened our adversaries and likely created the conditions that unleash war in eastern europe. the truth is weakness arouses evil. and i truly do believe, whether it's reentering the iran nuclear deal, negotiations underway, whether it be that disastrous withdrawal from
9:21 am
afghanistan, this administration has sent a message of weakness to the world. we need to return this country to american strength for the sake of the american people and the free world. [applause] >> and closer to home, you heard elizabeth talk about it, we're living in a time of cancel culture, aren't we? you know, i'm working on my autobiography now, it's going to be out before christmas and almost everybody is excited about it. [laughter] >> i ran into a little cancel culture myself there. we're getting it done. the truth is patriotic education has been replaced by political enr indoctrination crowd. our 1776 commission has been replaced by teaching of critical race theory in our schools. instead of teaching our kids to be proud of their country,
9:22 am
critical race theory teaches kids as young as kindergarten teaches kids to be ashamed of their skin color, and it should be ejected in every city and state in america. so we've got to tell our story of what we did, we've got to tell their story, used to be called the loyal opposition, right? but i also think we need to do one other thing, there's an old saying that you can't beat a program without a program. you know, i truly do believe it's absolutely essential that republicans offer a positive governing agenda that will fire the imagination of the american people. you know, i assembled about 50 of the brightest stars in the conservative movement in this
9:23 am
country, a foundation i set up in washington called american freedom. we actually put together a freedom agenda which if you want to get started on thinking about the agenda that has marshalled the enthusiasm of this party from back in the day when new hampshire got behind a california governor named ronald reagan all the way when you got behind a new york billionaire named donald trump. the ideas that animated, you can read about it at advancing american freedom.com. our goal is to raise the banner of freedom high because ours is a movement of ideas. it's always been driven by the notion that ideas have consequences. i think it's imperative that our party be a party of ideas and a party of the future. if we do all of those things, we tell our story, we hold them accountable, and we offer a
9:24 am
positive governing vision grounded in freedom at our highest ideals. i believe we won't just win in 2022, we will change the direction of our country for generations to come, as the american people rally to the cause of freedom. [applause] >> i'm confident because you know, i've seen this movie before. you may not remember it, but it was 2009, let me describe it for you. i was a member of congress, i was the conference chairman, meant i was third most powerful irrelevant person in the congress, nancy pelosi was speaker of the house. we were the minority, we had a minority in the united states senate and a brand new democrat in the white house in 2009. sound familiar, but republicans came together, did all the things i just described. we told our story, we held them
9:25 am
accountable, offered a positive governing vision and the fact is, we won 63 seats in the united states house of representatives. two years later won the senate two years later we won the white house and we'll do it once again starting in fall of 2022. [applause] >> truth of the matter is, you're here today at this great luncheon, this great tradition, 75 years in the making, because you know this isn't just about choosing candidates or choices between political parties, you know, as elizabeth said so eloquently. the american people are going to decide between two visions for the american future. the benefit we have today, as they saw our vision in the
9:26 am
policies of the trump-pence administration, saw the extraordinary results at home and abroad. and now if there is one silver lining of united democrat government in washington d.c., we get to see what they're really all about. and the truth is, starting this fall, the american people will decide whether our children or grandchildren will have the opportunity to stand tall in the freest and most prosperous nation the world has ever known or whether they'll be forced to live in the economic, moral and spiritual decline of socialism. it's time for us to have courage. courage of our convictions. carry the message all across the granite state and all across this country. tell our neighbors and friends whether they ever took a republican ballot in the past or not that it's time. it's time to take our country back. it's time to win a republican
9:27 am
majority in the house. it's time to retire maggie hassan and have a republican majority in the senate, it's time to reelect governor chris sununu and it's time to win back america. [applause] >> and as i close in these divided times i'd encourage you to do one more thing. i mean, above all else is have faith. as we speak to our neighbors and friends across the country, have faith in the american people. you know, travelling across this country as your vice-president, came away with two fixed conclusions. learn to cross visiting military bases speaking to groups large and small, this is a freedom loving nation and this is a nation of faith. if we hold the banner of
9:28 am
freedom high, the american people will rally to our cause and if we will each of us claim the promises that the founders of this great state claimed in those early days our nation's history. we will reclaim the promise that's been over the mantle in our home for over 20 years, that i know the plans i have for you. plans to prosper not to harm you, a plan to give you hope and future if we will, but renew our faith on him on whom our forebearers have placed one nation under god, with liberty and justice for all, i know the best days for the greatest nation on earth are yet to come. let's go get it done. thank you very much. god bless you and god bless
