[applause] >> it is an honor to be here with all of you and a privilege to unveil the postal service's stamp commemorating the life, memory and legacy of one of america's most prominent women, first lady barbara bush. today we recognize mrs. bush not only as a beloved first lady but as a remarkable american in her own right. she charted a legacy for herself and did it with conviction, determination and compassion. barbara bush was known for her

drive to help others, a drive through her own life experiences and tragedies. the loss of her daughter, robin, to leukemia at the age of 3 left an indelible mark on her heart and profound empathy for individuals and families marked by illness. in 1989, mrs. bush visited the hospice and cradled a child dying from aids. at that time even touching someone with aids was not only stigmatized but feared. in that moment, she encouraged the country to look past the disease and see the suffering child. in that vision, she helped shift people's perceptions about the disease and changed an entire nation's conversation. when that was done george w. bush would later continue in his presidency.

struggling with the -- dyslexia, she took on the challenge of illiteracy, a defining pillar of her social platform. and family literacy in 1989 and championing the national literacy act in 1991. through her tenure as first lady, she hosted mrs. bush's story time, national radio broadcast, encouraging adults to read aloud to children. these efforts would equip young americans with poor skills needed to succeed in life. the book she wrote inspired by her beloved dog taught bestseller lists and proceeds for use to further fund literacy programs. her name is in schools from texas to arizona, a children's hospital in maine, and her literacy plans a in houston, all symbols of her lifelong mission to connect families and

recognize president and missus bush's son, neil and daughter, dora, dorothy bush koch, you know that george hw bush was the love of barbara bush's life. a love so evident, 73 years of marriage. many would say there wouldn't be a president george h w bush if it wasn't for barbara bush. we know that. in fact, as your father did so well, wrote in a letter, you have given me joy that few men no, he wrote, i have climbed perhaps the highest mountain in the world but even that cannot hold a candle to being barbara's husband. she was by his side throughout his historic public service career culminating with his election, ultimately president

of the united states. barbara bush was well prepared for life as america's first lady and so many amazing accomplishments that she was a powerful force for change. and tirelessly advocacy, education is a civil right no matter one's age. played a key role behind the scenes for the national literacy act, bipartisan passage of that legislation in this elevated the needs of adult learners which was often overlooked and firmly placed literacy at the heart of american policy. today's event is a reminder it reminds us of the legacy of integrity, grace, service, grit, and at the george and barbara bush foundation, dedicated to preserving legacy

okay. the only man she would ever kiss at a school dance, two years later she was engaged to george h w bush beginning a partnership that would span decades and help shape history. little did she know the adventures ahead. life with george bush was never born. mom live through six children, 21 grandchildren, 27 movers from california to china, 7 wars, three dress sizes, two governors. 7 parachute jumps and two presidents. when she became first lady she transformed the white house into a true home. she hosted hundreds of guests, regularly invited children and her grandchildren for sleepovers and even welcomed

six spaniels into the mix. mom told staff she wanted to do something every day to help others so that is what she did. she scheduled many visits that highlighted the need, helped encourage volunteerism, focused on literacy. her signature because, all the problems in the world would be solved if every man, woman and child could write and comprehend. in one defining moment mom helped shift to the national dialogue around hiv/aids during a visit to grandma's house hospice in washington dc, she cradled baby donovan, an instant with hiv at a time when fear and stigma were rampant that simple compassionate act captured in a photo that made national headlines spoke louder than words ever could.

mom was never one to shy away from speaking the truth or taking a stand. her 1990 commencement speech at wellesley college initially met with resistance, went on to become one of the most celebrated speeches of the 20th century. and it she encouraged graduates to pursue meaningful relationships over material success saying at the end of your life you will never regret not having passed one more test, not winning one more verdict or not closing one more deal. you will regret time not spent with a husband, child, friend or parent. with her signature white hair and pearls she became an icon in her own right and even as a former first lady she remained humble and humorous when recognized at sam's club in houston she would often respond

no, i am much younger and prettier. our family is immeasurably blessed to call barbara bush our mom. her legacy lives on not only in history books but in the hearts of everyone she touched. it is unlikely that mom ever pictured herself on a postage stamp, and it is very likely she would be wondering what this fuss is about today but on behalf of my entire family, i can assure you that we are all very proud and grateful for this special tribute to. it is now my privilege and honor to introduce the first lady of the united states, milania trump.
