whitmer. the ai is not just technology, it is advanced manufacturing. and at the heart of the application of ai is how it translates into driving efficiencies and opportunities and new capabilities in manufacturing, and that's why i've been so pleased that virginia has been able to attract some of the leading manufacturing companies in the world. we've just crested over $100 billion of committed investment we have joseph crusted over $100 billion of committed investment from companies expanding a virginia. or coming new to virginia. those are businesses fromsi all over the world. it's fun when you have companies that have come from all over the world like steel from germany just celebrated their 50th anniversary in virginia. cork cannon from japan celebrated their 40th anniversary. our new companies like lego and to invest in a three and $50 million after establishing the very first u.s.

manufacturing facility. broke ground on a great cabling manufacturing business from koreaes. the opportunities a.i. presents of course are really going to transform the way we do business. they are going to transform the way we do things. that's what such an important aspect of i believe virginia's future which is to lead and a.i. leader in development most important lead in the application of that to make advanceded manufacturing the eny of the world here in the united states. >> thank you governor. i was you on the ferment leadership and experience even the best made factoring companies do not succeed in a vacuum. but come on down to it leadership in washington state houses or investigate manufacturers and smart public policy. particularly through our comprehensive managing strategy. something to talk about on the

national level. the right policy choices on taxes, trade, rebalance regulation, energy, parading or form, labor entering the workforce can help manufacturers compete and succeed on the world stage. making the case along the way now this may be a little repetitious from your previous answer. let's kind of shorten it to one policy that is on your mind the help manufacturers in your state get a hit? i'm going to start governor whitmerr. the michigan manufacturing john walsh gives you praise your focus on the high school manufacturing programs. i wanted to make sure he knew that what is one a policy or elect to focus on to enhance it manufacturing in the state? >> i cannot help without a workforce immediately. we think about how manufacturing has changed and how high-tech it

is. making sure our residents about the skills necessary to get into this advance to make action projects we've been landing in michigan. edge first and foremost i will not make t up for lack of work force. i don't it's one of the other, it got to do both. focus on scaling up ouron population. they have skills that translate. i gave a speech not long ago here in washington about america at competitiveness. we have got a wonderful history michigan when world war ii, we change the whole democracy and built bombers instead of trucks. it was a man and mostly women showing up because men were fighting in europe and in japan. i would say that moment of time it showed what an ingenuity can

be what america manufacturing is ideally, problem solving and nimble and ready to move. whether or not we think about america building ships or airplanes or chips, having have that kind of mindset and strategy that is focused catching up while relying on others. the orc forces always going to be central to our notion of whether or not we can be successful there. and something we have done for michiganders. making committee college free work with the u.s. navy to createis m3 which is at michigan maritime manufacturing undertaking with our community colleges in macomb county. spoke to the graduates of that program. it all came out with jobs for an

image of the building ships again after the skills. a big part in terms of an ecosystem that supports and thrives in the manufacturing sector. >> governor, you work with brett who is the head of the manufacturers state affiliate in virginia he gives you a high praise for workforce and energy strategy you adopted. what is anotherin issue that's foremost on your mind help encourage manufacturers to invest in virginia. just to take a pit stop on a workforce for. talent is the key. we all know it we have to provide multiple pathways for students to find their way into an opportunity driven workforce. that means start early. let's start at middle school and make sure all of your students write as fast as i can but they

have a passion. a student can get an industry recognized credential or a certificate and go to work right away. and by the way they do not have to pay for it that opens up a whole new opportunity for employers but even more so future workforce. they can ask which with the great colleges get a two-year degree to a community college or four-year degree at one of our greatst universities. we customize that to work with companies. virginia's talent accelerated which we been rated as the best customized talent workforce abutment program for the last three years,wi best in the couny it works for the companies to match their needs with the tile pipeline. power is critical we don't have powerpoint to be in trouble for putsome of the great opportunits not just for virginia but for americali to continue to demonstrate what affordable, reliable and increasingly clear power.

when you leave nuclear introduce natural gas and have solar and wind development of increasingly clean power. we need to make sure it's affordable andit reliable that's one of the great competitive advantages. the one thing i would add isai pipeline for your supply chain. supply chain certainty is critically important. as you watch supply chains movement particularly to the united states onto our trusted allies, that security of original supply chain letters in the united states but also a withseveral trusted allies. i think it's going to be the absolute cornerstone to manufacturing going forward. i'm really excited about watching the dynamic nature of supply chain movement around the world as we are seeing it regionalized. in some of these key areas like

semiconductors. seeing things come to the united states. we power it right and get supply chain right with the nine seats is going to dominate for a long time.re >> governor done late let's talk about a different kind of pipeline. we will work with the administration on the alaska project. katy runs the alaska chamber of commerce aret affiliate is for the pro- governors you've seen in alaska. what is one issue in your mind to attract investment in the state? >> it's a great question for alaska's's different challengesn the states represented appear on the podium. distance of the popular with the small population seven of 40000 folks. and to an operation part of americato it's a 49th state.

we came into the union as resource state. does it we do best. president trump aside of executive order are the only set alaska's the only state of executive order signed on its behalf because of the energy potential the critical minerals, our metals. alaska's enormous amounts of gas, enormous amount of oil for it the largest graphite find in north america. large deposits off nickel, lead, zinc, gold, you name it. alaska's looked upon by the white house as a solution to many of the worlds problems in america's problems. the gaslight is a huge project supported by the president. it is needed for our bases, and future manufacturing as well as our asian allies. this bye-bye we've thought about for decades and decades and decades with all of our permits, all the right of ways, and with the surge and electrification of the world especially for low carbon fuels such as are natural

gas, receiving from an asian allies is something we have not seenas before. this pipeline will be phased out in the phases. we hope to have that built here in the next two or two and a half years delivering gas to alaskans exporting gas to asian alliesn we just got back from a trip folks in taiwan are very interested in optic and gas and investing the same attire when we had a contingent book to alaska last week. we pioneer lng export for the world in 1969. multiple don't know that alaska's shipping gas through japan for 50 years paired with pioneered large oil pipelinean construction for the trans- alaskan oil pipeline belt 74 -- 77 and shipping oil ever since. 18 billion barrels of oil have gone to the pipeline.

this pipeline concept is supported by the president. it is supported by his staff. we'll have a huge energy conference third and fourth. secretary burnham, secretary bey wright, lead zelda epa and probably a thousand folks from around the world that one should invest in alaska. energy is a key to everything or are talking about. education is thes key alaska hs a lot energy world and the energy sphere especially for the pacific rim and pacific basin. >> governor moore, mary kain of the chamber of commerce gives you high praise for the work you will do together on the act which was about apprenticeships. we appreciate that as well. what is one thing on your mind to attract manufacturing investment into the state? >> is it the importance of apprenticeships and i think workforce development is crucial

in all of this. as a reason why we came in we were very clear we're going to invest and finally creating better pipelines y for young people and since we've come on board we have quadrupled the amount ofw apprenticeships that we have now in the state of maryland. we have been able to provide pathways for high school students, being very clear best four-year institutions in america and the state of maryland but not everyone of her students need to attend one of them in order to be economically successful. that has o created not just wrog pipeline off talent is one of te reasons it's been up to drive the unemployment state in a theland is not one of lowest in the entire country. and i think that while the apprenticeship work on the pipeline work has become incredibly important the other thing thatw has to be focused n is how are you then a leveraging the items youed know are uniquey

tethered to your jurisdiction? what could make sure rick education christian the employees but also be employers. themselves.reneurs we look at the type of assets we have with our state, that we invested with the port of baltimore not just one of the largest but also one of the most active support of the new united states but literally two thirds of the nine states consider goodsct from the port of baltimore. we don't many of you have cooperations and partnerships with the port of baltimore we thinkti about that leverage asss that we have supporting advanced manufacturing we have had a chance to meet earlier thinking about engineering the work they are doing in middle river in maryland. they talk about the reasons he chose middle river was the fact maryland is also the home in the

u.s. naval academy u.s. cyber command. in the applied physics lab. so you have all of these assets there some of the largest not just thoughtro leaders but industry producing assets that for a lot of the larger businesses specifically in manufacturing they want to be near. they want to be around. they want to be able to leverage. we've got to be able to focus on educational pipelines. we have to build a focus on apprenticeship platforms like mary kain from the maryland chamber of commerce was speaking about. we have to make sure folks are creating a way to get more people back into the workforce. and we have to build to leverage the assets that are already there. for large corporations and smaller corporations looking to invest and individual states those other questions they're asking. o how can i leverage the things that are already there but the

business in the governmental entities and our ability to streamline the vets, take it easier to buy the right kind of incentives is going to give us the court pathway to be able to win and the events manufacturing is taking place right now. para going to go back to alphabetical order now but also the governor, will do a speed around. different questions for each one of you. technology in a.i. companies look for competitive destinations for investments, what makes alaska strong contender for data centers and digital infrastructure? how has alaska shape the next generation of technology investments question.wa that's a great question. we talk about alaska the next several decades in some respects. and our ability to host data farms and data centers. alaska large tracts of continuous land we are talking

thousands of acres again a small population at large landmass. a freshwater any state in the country. we have cool temperatures obviously once the pipeline is built' with export going through by 2031 we are looking at potential electrical costs around 4 cents a kilowatt hour. this bodes well looking to diversify it where they put their data farms as opposed to one place or oneta area there'sn opportunity for data farms in alaska but inexpensive large tracts of land, lots of water, cool temperatures, so cool at the number of military bases out there. started a few years a very inexpensive gas, very inexpensive electricity. a tremendous opportunity and what will be a stable tax rate the tax system, tax regime for future data farms.

>> so, governor mark how are you leveraging international partnerships too accelerate a.i. research and development as well as commercialization in your state? and you have a recent collaboration you might be able to share with us? >> absolutely paid we are very clear if you're going to win particularly in the white house industry whether it's a life sciences, ip and aerospace and defense the ability to win in those industries may just be the best partner possible. in fact we just recently came back from foreign trade trip to japan and korea. it's great seeing so many of you with who we had to meet with over there. talk about how we are going to build a focus on these types of industries making sure strong partnerships with your time aerospace and defense. and so our ability to be able to

create those in bilateral relationships became imperative. i actually think that's where a lot of the future ise going t be. i think people south in the state of maryland what you have is stability. what you have is y transparency. what you have is a right atmosphere for the type of technological growth that i think wee all believe in. speaking with the idea of sinking about data sets and data farms is an example for the truth is and being completelyst transparent maryland was not only the best place to be able to have data center advancement that a lot of our neighbors were able to move much faster. or the person's widows introduce legislationci many things a thegovernor was talking about access to energy supply. access to water supply.

i'll give you a different one maybe we can talkre about that would later. michigan advanced manufacturing base. >> is rapidly integrating what role do you see michigan having and supporting the country's competitiveness and leadership in a.i.? >> it plays a major role. michigan, or the great things about michigan as the people to call it home for they are humble. it's a diverse population. and they work hard. we are gritty people, we know how to get things done. i'm really proud of a lot of the work we have been able to do to diversify our economy. in advanced mobility continues to be a really important part of the michigan economy. we think about defense in particular i was thrilled we were able to announce michigan will be home to a number of after 15 exp remain growing one

of the great things we are located geographically on the map is we are home to over 20% of theth world fresh surfac water. i'm going to say that warmer time because sometimes even people in a michigan do not appreciate what a big deal this is. 20% of the world fresh surface waters in and around the great lakes. we are the great lakes estate. these are wonderful strengths i think we have as we look to diversify and state cutting-edge with our phenomenal institutions of higher education. so many fortune 500 companies because of these important assets. but also the collaboration between government industry and the foreign direct investment we have benefited from over the years. level set it is a challenging time right now.

i note trade policy is creating a lot of stress and industries all across our economies. i can tell you when wes says that he believes the state to country relationship is more important than ever, we believe that as well. we want to make sure companies that invest in michigan have real partnership from her state government and we are working overtime to do that. if the goal is to make sure we're on a short drink more manufacturing and think that is something michigan is strongly positioned to be successful at doing and combining that with her technology when it comes to a.i.i. it's an exciting time its a stressful time is a challenging time. but for anyone who's in here please check it out. we would love to work with you. governor. a little over two years ago i had the privilege of joining you and other state leaders at the

lego ground breaking in chesterfield county. i have my own biased i was chief of staff are one of the present predecessors. so i kind of like virginia. but, like all states. virginia does know how to build. so, tell us how you're making more placesec in the commonwealh shovel ready for manufacturers? especially for a.i. focused projectsts like dated centers ad facilities for advanced manufacturing companies i am asking that because as you well know industrial site availability is often cited as a challenge for expanding manufacturing. >> i think one of the biggest opportunities for economic thvelopment is to shrink timelines. when time is expand our projects go from being great to mediocre or even mediocre to bad. having an accelerated timeline for every aspect of economic develop project is critical.

that starts with the state that understands what it means to run fast. last week we announced the build in virginia investment accelerator. it takes every aspect of state governments . only have it economic develop an opportunity we can accelerate everythingnt from permitting coc to approvals, to cite investment. site investment becomes critically important. and what we came inth a world where the general assembly we have divided government in virginia. you get this time because it's critically important and we have appropriated $500 million to invest in site readiness process to ensure the sites are graded and connected to utilities in the transportation infrastructure around them from rail to road is ready to go. and as a result companies coming to virginia are able to get ready to build immediately. when you can accelerate that whole timeline everything

changes. what we are seeing iswe business like lego that came to virginia because we had a shovel ready sites are now investing again. and that is a huge statement of i believe, affirmation for the ecosystem the business from the ecosystem that we have built. i think we have to combine this great ecosystem. virginia wheat crested through 15th thousands in virginia we set a goal of 10 over four years and hit 15000 in three years. of companies and want to grow but we want to connect them to advanced manufacturing side so they have customers. and finally one of the biggest attributes we have to pay attention to is where our people wanting to live? at the end of the day are more people moving into states are out of states? we in fact crested through net

in migration in 2023 at a level that made his ninth and the nation at the desired place to live. people coming much faster than they are moving away. i think we have certain sets of customersle we have people who live here we have people who don't live here yet but made like to come and we have a businesses that are already here the want to expand. i believe if we create an environment where we have a lower cost of living $9 billion of tax relief in virginia we have streamlined regulation. we have sites ready to go but we have great talents but we have a military when the largest presence in the entire united states. we can keep those people had them feed into the workforce. and finally we have a government that understands it's your pace that matters. not ours. therefore got to run fast to hep you be successful. then we can in fact play partners to build not t just a successful business for you but to open up opportunities for the people we all serve.
