$30,000, $3.8 billion. anybody who says those people are not getting screwed or not going to be paying more in taxes are absolutely wrong. i yield back. rep. neguse: i yield back. anyone else? seeing no one else wishing to ask questions i think this group for presenting your amendments. we will move onto the next group. is -- as they are leaving, our next panel will bems. dexter, mr. carter mr. tom:, mrs. good lander and mrs. lands berry.
12:18 pm
i do not know the answer to this one. >> we will take you live to president trump meeting with the south african president in the oval office. [captions copyright national cable satellite corp. 2025] [captioning performed by the national captioning institute, which is responsible for its caption content and accuracy. visit ncicap.org] [chatter] pres. trump: thank you very much, everyone, it is a great honor to be with the president of south africa, president rama phosa. he has a man certainly in some circles really respected, other
12:19 pm
circles a little bit less respected like all of us. we also have a few of my friends, bernie is a truly great golfer. and another, we call him a really great golfer. those two guys are fantastic. we could add gary to the group. what a group of golfers that south africa has had. there must be something in the water. pres. ramaphosa: it is the water certainly. pres. trump: gary is scary. david frost is another one noah such a great one. was he as good a putter as they say? he has a putting machine. there is something very good about south africa and golf. and golf is still doing great and they have young players coming up that will be good. it is an honor to have you here and it is honor to have you. one of the greatest businessmen in south africa.
12:20 pm
thank you for being here. it is a great honor and we appreciate it. we will be discussing certain things. we have the g20 that is going to south africa. when will that be? pres. ramaphosa: in november. and thereafter i hand over to you. you originated the g20 so i handed over to you. and then you lead the g20. pres. trump: that we have the following year? pres. ramaphosa: yes. pres. trump: we will be discussing some of those things and the things you are reading about in the papers and media. i will say that look, the president is a truly respected man in many circles and in other circles he is considered controversial. we will be discussing some of the things that are taking place in south africa and see if we can help. and we want to help.
12:21 pm
we have had a long relationship with south africa. i have, because indirectly i have a lot of friends who live here. these are famous guys that i have a lot of friends who live there that are tremendous people. and we will be discussing that. we will have a nice conversation. and i appreciate that you guys came along. it really helps us in our thought process. it is a great honor to have you and i appreciate your call. i do not know where he got my number but i picked up and said i want to come over and see you. that was my honor and thank you for being here. pres. ramaphosa: thank you very much for welcoming us to this reformed white house, beautiful and it looks really prove -- fantastic must congratulate you and i must thank you for allowing our delegation, this is a very mixed delegation. people from government,
12:22 pm
ministers and i have someone from the trade union movement. we are collaborating for business as well and are sporting legends. when i spoke to you you said come along and bring gary player and anyone else. i brought the two of them. i spoke to him, and he said look, i am getting on in my years, but wishes us lock in this discussion with you. it is a real joy. and also, i would like to thank you for allowing your people to start discussions with us at the trade level. we are essentially hereto reset -- here to reset the relationship between the united states and south africa. we are long-standing partners in many ways and we have collaborated in many fields. space issues, energy, and trade.
12:23 pm
therefore, we need to reset, particularly in the light of some of the announcements that you made on trade and investment. we want to advance more trade between the two of us between our countries and our people. and we have been empowered to start engaging and we hope that you will be able to feel that engagement during our talks. we want to discuss issues that have we do -- that have to do with how to promote further investments in both countries. there are plenty of countries that have invented -- invested in the u.s. and created jobs. and you have almost 600 companies that have invested in south africa. and some of them have been in south africa for more than 100 years. our links are long-lasting, and i would like to recalibrate
12:24 pm
between our two countries and express a whole range of issues. geopolitical and to make peace beyond the world, and we value that and we are a great contributor to peace process is and of course, we want to discuss how we can support each other. you were in a much bigger economy than we are. we are a tiny economy. we rely on each other on a number of issues. we have critical minerals that you want to fuel the growth of your own economy. and we have more including rare mineral -- rare minerals. all of that combination of opportunity and products that we buy from you as well as what we sell to you, i believe it makes up a good and powerful
12:25 pm
relationship, which we need to strengthen and engender, and that is what has brought us here. and we are very privileged to have great south africans in the mix. you said you would like to see them as well. and i have brought you a really fantastic golf book. it weighs 14 kilograms. and it showcases the golf courses in our country. and i want to showcase our golf courses. you might remember that when i spoke to you and you spoke about golf that you said you stopped practicing and so i have started practicing. i am. let me end just the introductory remarks. by thanking you. five years ago i spoke to you during the covid period, and it was at a time when the whole
12:26 pm
world was going through a really dramatic moment. we asked for assistance and you were able to assist us respirators. respirators. [laughter] respirators and you kept your word and you delivered respirators to us. we did not have as many in our country. it really helped to have us deal with covid. i am here also to say thank you and to thank the people of america for having helped us during a really difficult time. being the small economy that we are we needed help around the world. thank you very much. pres. trump: i remember. we were the respirator king. we sent 150, and i appreciated
12:27 pm
the letter that you wrote me. thank you. pres. ramaphosa: thank you very much. it really touched my heart after i spoke to you and you delivered. pres. trump: any questions? >> the white afrikaner refugees, and can you explain to americans to bring a white afrikaner's here when other refugees like africans, venezuelans and asians have had their status revoked? pres. trump: this is a group and we have seen that it is truly fake news. they ask a lot of questions that are pointed where they are not questions and they are statements. we have had tremendous complaints about africa and other countries from people. they say there is a lot of bad things going on in africa and that is what we will be discussing today. when you say we do not take others, just look at the southern border. we let 21 million people come
12:28 pm
through the border totally unchecked and unvented. they came from all over the world and in many cases they are criminals and they come from prisons and mental institutions and street gangs and drug dealers. do not say we did not take them. we are trying to get them out as fast as we can. we are doing record business and we are allowed to send back hundreds of criminals to venezuela, i just won that the supreme court, i am happy to hear. we do have a lot of people who are very concerned with regards to south africa and that is the purpose of the meeting. we will see how it turns out. we have many people feel who they are being persecuted and they are coming to the united states. we take from money locations if we feel there is persecution or genocide going on. and, we had a lot of people. i must tell you, we have had a
12:29 pm
tremendous number of people especially since they are seeing this, they are white farmers fleeing south africa. and that is a sad thing to see. but, i hope we can have an excellent nation of that, because i know you do not want that. it is a different meeting. normally we will talk about trade. and we will be talking about trade and other things. but that will be the subject that comes up. >> thank you. i would like to get your thoughts on the director, according to him, letitia james says that rent and mortgage fraud was a mistake. i want to get your thoughts on that. she put down that her father was her husband and this is very similar to what is going on. pres. trump: i do not know what is going on currently. the attorney general of new york
12:30 pm
city, i am not involved in that at all. it is being handled by various groups, i guess. it is major fraud. mortgage documents and fraudulent everything. i think she said her father was her husband, where she had to have a husband and she chose her father. and she put it down and she said she lived in virginia. and yet she is the new york state attorney general and she did that for tax reasons to take advantage of taxes. and she had a much different young dust much different number which would not have allowed her to qualify and scam the government. i do not know. she is bad for new york that i do not know too much about it. i appreciate the question. >> thank you.
12:31 pm
the planning of the celebration of africa day which will be taking place around the world, including here in the united states. what is your message to the entire african continent and the african people on this important occasion? pres. trump: i want to see peace, happiness and health. you have incredible land with tremendous value. a lot of countries do not have that value. we have a situation that you heard about. we have done through some very talented people helped settle a war that has been raging for years, rwanda and the congo. and i think we have done it. believe it or not, i think we have done it. could you say a few words about that my friend? >> a couple of weeks ago they signed a declaration of principles. in which they have agreed on the way forward. and they have both submitted the
12:32 pm
draft peace agreements. and we have put together one that incorporates both of their suggestions and we have given it to them. we are in the process of finalizing. it is looking very good. pres. ramaphosa: we have to thank you for those efforts because the african continent, particularly the southern african community has been seeking to foster peace in the democratic republic of the congo. all efforts including those from outside the continent and inside the continent are really worthwhile. we are removing our troops from there so that keys can then prevail in that whole area. and we hope with the support of the international community, we will really have peace in that area. it is so vital and so important for the whole region. pres. trump: we sense -- sent
12:33 pm
our people there. and we did a good job. i am hearing phenomenal reports because all i have heard is death and it was horrible over there. and it was brave of you to go there and i appreciate it. and it looks like we have something very substantial. we also talked about trade with them in terms of rare-earth and really, if you take a look at what we just did with pakistan and india, we settled that whole thing. and we settled it through trade. we are doing a big deal with india and with pakistan and i said what are you guys doing? somebody had to be the last one to shoot but the shooting was getting worse and deeper into the country is. and we spoke to them and i hate
12:34 pm
to say we got it settled and then two days later and something happens and they say it is trump's fault. but pakistan has got some excellent people and a really great leader. and india, my friend, -- pres. ramaphosa: mutual friend. pres. trump: he is a great guy. and we called them both. we did something good. we are trying to settle russia-ukraine. i spoke with president putin for 2.5 hours the day before yesterday and i think we made a lot of progress. that is a bloodbath. 5000 soldiers a week not including people in cities and towns that are also being killed. we are trying to help. it does not affect us. it is not our people or soldiers. it is ukraine and russia. but if we can save 5000 souls, we are due -- we will do it. we are pretty good at it.
12:35 pm
that is a really bad situation. pres. ramaphosa: you recall when president zelenskyy was coming to south africa and we both agreed that to push the peace message so there can really bps. and we have been in the ukraine-russia conflict for a a while. so i understand the dealing with them in the exchange of children who were taken away, going through names and addresses and all of that. we have been invested in that whole process as well. and the moves that you are making are fully supported by us, because we would like to see the end of that war. pres. trump: i called president zelenskyy and he said he is in south africa. and i said what the hell is he doing? i said what are you doing in south africa? that is a strange one. making case. pres. ramaphosa: you know, we
12:36 pm
were lucky because nelson mandela taught us how to create and make peace so we were imparting some of those lessons and some of those learnings. and i specifically mentioned to him that this is how nelson mandela taught us that when you want to have a piece in a country, do it on an unconditional basis, that down and talk. and that is precisely what i am sure. pres. trump: we will see what happens. there is a lot of hatred and a lot of death. it is a bloodbath. pres. ramaphosa: unfortunately. pres. trump: i get the satellite pictures of the killing field. you never saw anything like it. it is a horrible thing that it goes on. and we have made progress. go ahead. >> i wanted to ask mr. president
12:37 pm
from south africa, what are you expecting on the icj case? are you expecting them to drop that? pres. trump: i do not expect anything, to be honest, i really do not. i do not know. they have a lot of anger there, tremendous anger. i do not expect anything. we will have a ruling and who knows what it will be. >> on the subject of gaza, are you going to be speaking to prime minister netanyahu about israel's renewed offensive. there is been concerned about european countries and the pope has expressed concern. we be asking the prime minister to tone down the offensive to let more aid and? pres. trump: is that a question or statement? >> you never change. >> what will it take for you to be convinced that there is no white genocide in south africa?
12:38 pm
pres. ramaphosa: i can answer that for the president. pres. trump: i would rather have him answer. pres. ramaphosa: it will take president trump listening to the voices of south africans. some of whom are his good friends, like those who are here. when we have talks between us around a quiet table, it will take president trump to listen to them. i will not be repeating what i have been saying. i will say if there was african and her phone number -- farmer -- afrikaner farmer genocide than these people would not be here. my minister of agriculture will not be with me. it will take president trump listening to their stories and their perspective. that is the answer to your question. pres. trump: thank you.
12:39 pm
late. -- wait. we have thousands of stories talking about it. we have documentaries and news stories. is natalie here or somebody here? i can show you a couple of things. it has to be responded to. let me see the articles, please, if you would. and turn the lights down. turn the lights down and just put this on right behind you. johan. >> we do not care. who are you to tell us what we can do. we are going to occupy land. that is who we are.

12:43 pm
pres. trump: now this is very bad. these are aerial sights over 1000 white farmers, and those cars are lined up to pay love on a sunday morning. each one of those white things you see is a cross. and there is approximately 1000 of them. they are all white farmers, the family of white farmers. those cars are not driving. they are stopped to pay respect to their family member who was killed. and, it is a terrible sight. i have never seen anything like it. both sides of the road, you have crosses. pres. ramaphosa: have they told
12:44 pm
you where that is mr. president? pres. trump: no. pres. ramaphosa: i would like to know where that is because this i have never seen. pres. trump: i mean, it is in south africa. pres. ramaphosa: we need to find out. >> mr. president the pentagon announced it would use a qatari jet to be used as air force one? what are you talking about. pres. trump: what does this have to do with the qatari jet? they are giving the united
12:45 pm
states air force a jet? and it is a great thing. we are talking about a lot of other things. this is nbc trying to get off of the subject. you are a terrible reporter. number one you do not have what it takes to be a reporter, you are not smart enough. to go into a subject about a jet given to the united states air force, which is a very nice thing. they gave $5.1 trillion worth of investment in addition to the jet. go back, you ought to go back to your studio it nbc because brian roberts and the people who run that place, they ought to be investigated. they are so terrible the way you run that network and you are a disgrace. no more questions from you. go ahead. talk about that. his name is peter something. he has a terrible reporter. >> thank you so much.
Check
12:46 pm
i am from south africa. thank you very much. what would you like the president to do about the situation? pres. trump: i do not know. look, these are articles over the last few days, death of people, death. death. horrible death. death. white south africans are fleeing because of the violence and racist laws and this is all -- i will give them to these. so when what would i like to do, i do not know. white south african couples say that they were attacked violently. >> would you go in and see for yourself? pres. trump: i could do it. these are all white farmers and he asked about a jet that was given.
12:47 pm
you ought to be ashamed of yourself. you are so bad. you are such a bad reporter. this is one after another. this family was wiped out. i am just looking. >> your reaction to those videos? pres. trump: i think the videos are so -- when you look at the videos, i mean, how does it get worse? these are people who are officials and they are saying kill a white farmer and take their land. i have other friends in south africa, and i have people who have left. one in particular who says you cannot go there. they say they will take your land and they kill you. it is ok. and they say it is ok to do. we are going to talk about it. but this is recent. these are all people who
12:48 pm
recently got killed. and i do not know how it can get worse. and you know, the men that you saw and the people that you saw, those are officials and people that were in office. they had one march and they had a dance in your parliament or whatever you call it. pres. ramaphosa: let me clarify. because what you saw and the speech is being made, one, that is not government policy. we have a multiparty democracy in south africa that allows people to express themselves. political parties to adhere to various policies. in many cases or in some cases those policies do not go along with government policy. our government policy is completely against what he was
12:49 pm
saying, even in the parliament. and they are a small minority party. which is allowed to exist in terms of our constitution. pres. trump: but you do allow them to take land. pres. ramaphosa: nobody can take land. pres. trump: and then when they take the land they kill the white farmer. and then when they kill the white farmer nothing happens. pres. ramaphosa: no. there is criminality in our country. people who do get killed unfortunately through criminal activity are not only white people. the majority of them are black people. pres. trump: the farmers are not black. i am not saying that is good or bad the farmers are not black. and the people being killed in large numbers and you saw all of those gravesites. those are people who loved ones are going on a sunday morning they tell me to pay respect to their loved ones that were killed. their heads chopped off.
12:50 pm
they died violently. and you know, we are here to talk about it. but, i will say this. if the news was not fake like nbc, which is fake news. abc, nbc and cbs, horrible. if they were not fake news like this jerk, if we had real reporters they would be covering it. but the fake news in this country does not talk about that. they do not want to talk about it. now they had -- now they have to talk about it but they will not. they will have talking about why did the country give a free, why did a country give an airplane to air force? not to me, to the united states air force so they can help us out because we need in air force one until the new air force one is being built, two of them
12:51 pm
being built. boeing is a little bit late. so why did they give a plane to the united states air force. that is what that idiot talks about after viewing a thing when thousands of people are dead. pres. ramaphosa: i am sorry i do not have a plane to give you. pres. trump: i wish you did. if your country offered the united states air force a plane, i would take it. pres. ramaphosa: coming back to this issue, which i would really like us to talk about, and to talk about it calmly. we were taught by nelson mandela whenever there are problems, people need to sit down around a table and talk about it. and this is precisely what we would also do including of course trade matters and investment matters. so, the issues that concern you and the united states. pres. trump: those are all deaths. pres. ramaphosa: in many ways, one should say you are a partner of south africa. and you are raising concerns.
12:52 pm
these are concerns that we are willing to talk to you about. let me add quickly. the criminality that we are experiencing in our country needs quite a lot of technological capability. and in one of our areas in south africa, we are using u.s. technology, which is able to, in many ways identify where shootings are happening and all of that. i would like to talk about that because there is support that we can get from you from the united states to help us deal with all of this criminality. and that is what partnership is all about. and we are here, as a partner so that we can help each other whenever the right challenge is. i would like us to discuss it. and of course outside of the media so we sit down and have a really good discussion that will
12:53 pm
lead to good outcomes. >> are there any other punitive measures to be in play should you not be satisfied that south africa is axing some of the bad things and the problems that you have set are happening? pres. trump: there are a lot of bad things happening in many countries, this in particular has been very bad. and because we are going to have the whole world watching and another short period of time because you have the g20. and that is a big deal. and it seems like i mean, i want you to look good. i do not want you to look bad. but we have hundreds of people, thousands of people trying to come into the country because they feel like they will be killed and their land confiscated. and you have laws that were passed that you can take away land for no payment. pres. ramaphosa: i want to
12:54 pm
clarify that because we have a constitution. our current stent -- our constitution guarantees and protects the safety and tenure of land ownership. that constitution protects all south africans with regard to land ownership. however, we do say because we have to deal with the past, the government, as your government has also done. it has appropriate land for public use. we have never really gotten underway with that. pres. trump: no, you are taking people's land. pres. ramaphosa: we have not. pres. trump: and those people in many cases are being executed. they are being executed and they happen to be white. and most of them happen to be farmers. that is a tough situation and i do not know how you explain that. how do you explain that? they are taking people's land away and in many cases those people are being executed.
12:55 pm
in many cases it is people that kill them and take their land and nothing happens to them. we have thousands of people that want to come into the country and they are also going to australia in a smaller number. we have thousands of people wanting to come into our country and they are white farmers. and they feel like they are going to die in south africa. it is a bad thing. >> first, what can south african do, what concessions would they make to improve relations with the united states and then i have one more for president ramaphosa afterwards. pres. trump: i got them a complex machine, 150 of them. i was asked by the president if he could help. and i did that. i have a great feeling for all countries. i deal with all countries. i have a great feeling for south africa, because i have a few friends here today, i have many
12:56 pm
friends from south africa. but many of those friends are -- they cannot go back. elon is from south africa and i do not want to get him involved. that is all i have to do, that him into another thing. he happens to be from south africa. this is what he wanted. he came here on a different subject, sending rockets to mars. he likes that subject better. he is from south africa. and i do not want to talk to him about that. i do not think it is fair to him. i will say that people are fleeing south africa for their own safety. their land is being confiscated and in many cases they are being killed. and that scene, you see how many crosses they have. that is a dead person under every one of them. and those cars are paying their respects to all of those dead people on a sunday morning. that is a rough thing to explain away.
12:57 pm
and the problem we have, and a correct and fair media exposes things. but, we have a very corrupt media. they will not even report this. if this were the other way around it would be the biggest story. i will say apartheid was terrible. that was reported all the time. this is the opposite of apartheid. what is happening now is never reported and nobody knows about it. all we know is that we are being inundated with white farmers from south africa. and it is a big problem. marco rubio was telling me he has never seen anything like it. the numbers of people who want to leave because they feel like they will be dead soon. >> if i can just ask the question. 72% of farmers in your country are white. if they flee to -- do you feel that the economy could collapse and you might not have a gap to
12:58 pm
fill in the people that need to replace those farmers? pres. ramaphosa: i would like my minister of agriculture who is white and comes from an opposition party to mine, who has joined my government, at my invitation to address this very issue, including the question you have just raised. john: thank you to welcoming us to the white house. we have a problem in south africa and nobody wants to candy coat that. it requires a lot of effort to get on top of it. it is going to require different strategies to be able to deal with it. the majority of south africans, commercial and small farmers really do want to stay in south africa and make it work. work and i have just come from the largest agricultural show in the southern hemisphere with organized agriculture and farmers in the majority of them want to stay. they have a memorial to those
12:59 pm
who have died and as the minister of agriculture, it is something that i am particularly concerned with, and my colleagues in the justice cluster, to start making farm attacks and stock theft a priority. it has a disproportionate effect on small farmers. i also just want to say this, that the two individuals in that video you have seen are both leaders of opposition minority parties in south africa. the reason that my party, the democratic alliance which has been opposition for over 30 years, chose to join hands with mr. ramaphosa's party was to keep those people out of power. we cannot have those people sitting at the union buildings taking decisions, that is why
1:00 pm
after 30 years of us exchanging barbs across the floor in parliament and trying to get one over on each other, we decided to join hands precisely to keep that lot out of government because the day they get in to the doors of the union buildings in south africa or control of our parliament, that is what you are going to see. that is what this government working together -- that is why this government needs the support of our allies around the world, so we can strengthen our hand and shut the door forever on that rabble getting through the doors. because then south africa's future will be -- >> you denounce the type of language you saw in the video? pres. ramaphosa: yes. as government, as our own party, we are completely opposed to that. we adopted a document which said south africa belongs to all who live within it. pres. trump: why wouldn't you arrest that man? that man said kill the white farmers, kill the white farmers
1:01 pm
and then he danced and he is dancing and it is kill the white farmers. i'm not sure but i think if someone got up and parliament and started saying kill a certain group of people, here, he would be arrested very quickly. that man is going all over south africa and that's not a small party. that was a stadium that housed 100,000 people and i hardly saw an empty seat. that's a lot of people, a lot of representation. those crosses. we have dead white farmers, and you take a look at australia. they are being inundated and we are being inundated with people who want to be getting out. the farm is valueless. they want to get out with their life. this is a serious situation, and if we had real news or real press, we don't have that because they won't talk about
1:02 pm
this, because they are all guys like that idiot. if we had a real press, it would be exposed. the beauty of exposing it is it is like a cleansing action. it'll get fixed. but people don't talk about it. i will tell you who is talking about the thousands of people fleeing south africa right now. [indiscernible] pres. trump: it is devastating and hopefully a lot of people are going to start spending a lot of money. i have talked to other nations. we want them to chip in and spend money. we've spent a lot. it is a tremendous problem. in many countries, a lot of problems going on. the united states always gets requests for money. nobody else helps us. europe hasn't given anything.
1:03 pm
all they do is sue our companies. they sue apple and all of our companies. apple had to pay $17 billion on a nonsense lawsuit, very unfair but we are always going to be there to help. [indiscernible] pres. trump: it is fantastic. it's going to be resolved, it should be resolved. it's got -- it is bad when you see a stadium with 100,000 people in it because that is more than just a little movement. it is a pretty big movement in south africa so it has to be resolved. it'll be the end of the country of it is not resolved. >> is there a potential relationship moving forward? pres. trump: i hope so. i'm not here for my health. i can tell you, my friends feel
1:04 pm
so strongly, they wanted to be here on behalf of south africa. not on behalf of me. they said can we be here for this because they love the country. do you guys want to say a couple of words? this is copper things -- this is tougher than sinking a three footer. they have sank many three voters. -- three-footers. >> we've known each other a long time. we have spoken. we are proud south africans. i still have my south african passport. we travel all over with this passport and my visa here. we want to see things get better in our home country. that is the bottom line. it's been 35 years since the transition. president ramaphosa was right in
1:05 pm
the middle of the transition in 1990. it's been 35 years of antigovernment, and i know there is a lot of anger through the transition. a lot of stuff happening in apartheid. we grew up in the apartheid era. but i don't think two wrongs makes it right. president mandela when he came out of presid -- when he came out of prison did not come out with hatred. he really unified our nation, through sport. we won the world cup in 1995. pres. trump: four times. >> we won the african nations cup. we won some majors as golfers and so forth. what i'm trying to say is this
1:06 pm
has been a long time coming. that is why we wanted to meet you and the administration, and see a way forward because we still want to see our country flourish. we've got some great things going on. businesses getting involved with the government. farming, farmers are getting involved in local me disabilities, trying to rebuild some of the infrastructure that has been decaying for a long time. there is a lot of coexistence going on, and help from a lot of areas. i feel we need the u.s. to push this thing through. we've got a great ally if we can have the u.s. they've always been a ally of these -- of south africa, even in the days of the war.

you guys helped us. very important for us to have your support and get the change we need. pres. trump: i think you do that well. [laughter] [indiscernible] pres. trump: he might have done that even better than he plays golf, which is almost impossible. johan, please. >> number one, for over 10 years, the first time i met him, he was in a youth league with that gentleman. and look how he has changed. we have too many deaths, and it's across the board. it's not only white farmers. it is across-the-board. we need technological help.
1:08 pm
we need drones. i got drones donated for the peace parks, to stop elephant and rhino poaching. and his predecessor stopped the importation because he said the united states would spy on us. so if we -- if you can help us, remember, you and i lived in new york in the 1970's. we never thought new york would be what it became. two commissioners, a deaf mayor. we need your help to stop this awful killing. it is across-the-board. i'm building three cottages for my grandchildren on a farm.
1:09 pm
i often go to bed without locking the door. but we have a serious problem with illegal aliens. they stream across the border and if you really look at the statistics, a lot of these murders, firstly it is the unemployed. and illegal aliens. and then i met vice president vance many years ago. my wife loved his book. she reminded me this morning that you emphasized the devastation that occurs when big companies leave towns and cities. there is a culture of dependency that develops. i remember you discussing that. that is our problem. if we don't get our economy to grow, the culture of dependency
1:10 pm
and the lawlessness will increase. i've been against apartheid my whole life, and i am their number one target. google my name and the town. you will see it. pres. trump: the crime is bad. >> the crime is terrible sir. -- runs the western cape where i live and the biggest murders are in the cape flats. gangs. we've got gang warfare, like your and 33 or whatever these guys. we've got equivalents but we need your help, and we need elon's technology. pres. trump: one of the real -- pres. ramaphosa: one of the real areas of support is to grow our economy. through growing the economy, we are able to create more jobs.
1:11 pm
crime thrives where there is inequality and unemployment. that is one of the reasons that has brought us here, to improve our investment relations, our trade relations, so that we can preserve the number of jobs that your companies have created in south africa. by virtue of what we export to you, we are able to create up to 500,000 jobs in the auto industry and the agricultural industry and a number of other industries. we also know that as a south african companies invest here, it is a mutually beneficial relationship. so our main reason for being here is to foster trade and investment, so that we are able to grow our economy.
1:12 pm
so that we are also able to address all of these societal problems, because criminality thrives when people are unemployed and they have no other hope to eke out a living. that is what we need to resolve. your partnership with us is what is going to give us a strong capability to move forward. pres. trump: excuse me, do you have anything to say? i don't want to leave you out. the guy won three or four majors. [laughter] two is a lot. do you have anything to say? >> thank you mr. president and president ramaphosa. i grew up in south african farmland. there are some issues up there, obviously. my dad was a part-time farmer.
1:13 pm
some of these farmers got killed. the farm is still going. my brothers run it but it is a constant battle with farms trying to get -- they are trying to burn the farms down to chase you away. it is a concern, to try and make a living as a farmer and without farmers, there is no food. so we need the farmers to produce the food. pres. trump: they love farming, they never want to leave. it is a struggle. >> food and freshwater is the most important thing. without those things you can't survive. pres. trump: how is the water? >> the water is great. all of the water comes out of the ground for us. it is a battle to get the water out sometimes when all the equipment get stolen. pres. trump: do your brothers
1:14 pm
feel safe on the farm? >> they live behind electric fences, trying to be safe. it is constant whenever you leave that something could happen. pres. trump: that is no way to live. >> my mom has been attacked in the house. it is difficult, but the guys live a great life despite everything going on. [inaudible] pres. ramaphosa: president trump, i brought along the president of the largest trade union in our country, because she leads many workers. more than one million, 2 million workers. maybe we should give her a chance to say something. she has come all the way to join us. >> thank you for extending the
1:15 pm
invitation to us. i must say that we are here to support the initiatives that have been made by our government, with business. as organized labor, we've been coming to washington on trade relations with the previous regime. i think at the center of it all for me, it is exactly what they said. the occurrence of growing the economy. the 600 u.s. companies that are based in south africa as you said, 500,000 jobs would be wiped out. we need more direct investment in our country. we are not just talking about those that would lose employment. you're talking about 40% of people unemployed, that have no
1:16 pm
hope of ever finding a job. we think, correctly as they have said, we need to deal with the issue of the poorest in our country so that everyone who comes in is documented. i would love if the if the minister would address how the police works in south africa. as you are preparing to come here, on the news, there was a handover of farms. white farmers would say we are donating the land, but also a willing seller in south africa. there is no x appropriation without -- expropriation without compensation. that white farmer said the government is even paying more in buying the land than what the

land is worth. those of the realities that we need to address. the importance of agriculture linked to overgrowth. people rely on it for survival and living. lastly is the issue of the crime statistics. there is no doubt that we are a violent nation. for a number of reasons. we are not condoning anything. but also if you go into the rural areas, where the black majority are, you would see women, elderly being raped, killed, and these are black elderly women that would be found with slit throats, raped ultimo times, all of that. the problem in south africa, it
1:18 pm
is not about race but it is about crime. we are here to say how do we, both nations, work together to reset, to talk about investment, but also help us in how we can have the technology and everything to address the levels of crime that we have in the country. pres. trump: thank you very much. [indiscernible] >> genocide is a long word. have you made up your mind if genocide is happening in south africa. have you made up your mind? pres. trump: i haven't made up my mind. i'm trying to save lives. i'm working with russia and ukraine. i don't have to do that. it is not our war. it never would have happened if
1:19 pm
i was president, but i'm trying to save lives. rwanda, i have nothing to do with rwanda or the congo but i felt i had a very talented person in this administration and i sent them there and he did an unbelievable job. we are going to find out. he's done the hardest part of the job. if i can save lives, i want to save lives. if it is in africa, that's great. europe, wherever it may be. it is a small investment to do, compared to what the consequences are. i hope we can do something. i have so many friends. i have great admiration for these two because i know what they do for a living. going from city to city, country to country and hitting a ball 350 yards like they do. getting the ball in the hole.
1:20 pm
it is tough with lots of people watching. it is a tough living. they are champions. i respect champions. i think the country is very lucky. they really wanted to be here. they could be elsewhere, on a beautiful fairway somewhere else. [indiscernible] >> how important is it for the united states to be at the g20 summit in november, given that the relationship between our countries you just heard, what has been said to you just now. are you coming and are you preparing to come? pres. trump: without the united states, the g20 just like the g7, it used to be the g8 but they threw russia out. if it was in, you public would not have this war. if you had a different president you wouldn't have a war either
1:21 pm
but it is important that the united states is in both of them. without the united states, i believe it is not very important. it's not the same. [indiscernible] pres. ramaphosa: as i said to president trump, the u.s. really originated the g20. it is important that the united states continues to play a key role in the g20. and we are privileged to be the president of the g20, but we are overjoyed that we are going to hand over to the united states, the originators. and for that reason, i expect the united states to continue playing the leadership role in the g20 together with other countries, and i've said when i initially spoke to president trump over the phone, i want you to come to south africa for a state visit and i want you to
1:22 pm
come and participate in the g20, and i want to hand over to president trump, to take the leadership of the g20 forward. pres. trump: thank you very much. thank you very much. thank you. they don't want to leave. [laughter] [indiscernible questions] >> thanks everybody. let's go. keep going, thank you. >> order. >> in a nation divided, a rare moment of unity. this fall, c-span presents cease fire, when the shouting stops and the conversations begin. in a town where partisan fighting prevails, one table, two leaders, one goal. to find common ground. this fall, cease fire on the
