truth forever. father, we know this would not be possible without the diligence and perseverance of the colonel and the others who worked to make it happen. be with us now and help us all, both here and around the world, to know this is a significant achievement, to remind us of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice over 70 years ago. in his name we pray, amen. >> ladies and gentlemen, please be seated. i would now like to introduce the chairman of the board of korean war veterans memorial
foundation to give his welcoming remarks. >> [speaking foreign language] >> president, ambassador, governor misses hogan -- governor and mrs. hogan, distinguished guests, the families of the fallen, and most important, the many veterans of the korean war who fought in guaranteed freedom in the republic of korea, welcome to this groundbreaking ceremony of this wall of remembrance. as chairman of the foundation, i am honored to host this momentous event. the groundbreaking of the wall of remembrance and the korean war memorial, which will add 100
panels with the names of 36,595 americans and 7100 who were killed during the korean war 1950-1953. it will be a physical manifestation of the strength of the rock of the u.s. alliance. it will educate over 4 million visitors here each year on the cost of freedom and the cost of war. most important, it will honor and pay homage to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, their lives for freedom. i wish to thank president moon for his unwavering support of this project. i want to thank the ministry of veterans affairs, the rock national assembly, the korean
veterans association, the national park service, and the generous contributions of the citizens of the republic of korea and the many american and korean individuals, organizations, and corporations that donated so generously to make this happen. without your continuous generosity, the dream of our korean war veterans could not become a reality. as you can see, the wall of remembrance is under construction. this symbolic groundbreaking turns a concept, a dream into reality. we are hopeful to have the dedication of the completed renovation and the wall of remembrance in may 2022. thank you for being here. realized white the light of individuals is respected. those who dedicate themselves in service to their neighbors and communities are bestowed the height, honor, and courtesy, the very root that helped for -- found america. this gutted the world towards freedom and peace. 71 years ago, young men and women of america came to the korean peninsula. they were the sons and daughters of america who answered the call to defend their country that they never knew and the people they never met. the descendants of the founding fathers of your great country. thanks to their devotion and sacrifice, the republic of korea could safeguard its freedom and peace and become a prosperous nation that it is today. inevitably however, we had to part with countless fallen heroes.
today, we are breaking ground for the world of remembrance welch will be home to the names of 43,000 such heroes. their courage and commitment shall live on forever deeply ingrained in our memory. in 2018, i gave my word to the u.n. world veterans that the world would be built to remember their names. three years later today, i am immeasurably touched that the promise has been capped. with us today, is the kernel and other veterans and i expressed my most profound respect to them. as the president of the country you fought for, i say this without a doubt: your southwest service was never in vain. to the family members who hold
their love ones dear to their heart, i offer my warmest condolences. now after fending the challenges, the initiative continues progress things to the memorial foundation and its staff, featuring other korean veterans association and affiliated bodies with its communities, korean women's association, and korean americans. i think you all from the bottom of my heart. celebrating this occasion today is the secretary of defense. at the same time, the governor of maryland, i would like to thank you for your participation today. today, i was reminded of a remark president biden made in his address that will not lead
by the power of our example. it was the power of values that america changed the world. a nation belongs to his people and everybody is free and equal without any discrimination. these founding rentable's of america have now become universal highlights shared across the world. korea is no exception. it is the power of those values we have surmounted dictatorship and poverty. not a tale of fear, but one of hope that could be written. the most trying times of war and reconstruction, it was korean war veterans by our side. as struggling as we were to rise over the ashes of the war, the general was the one who reached out to firmly hold our hands.
these wars of the generals are wars that the u.s. conflicts in -- inspired a standing ovation. greater quantities of aids, supplies, and grants were approved. general whitcomb who touch the hearts of koreans is now resting in peace in my hometown abu sans. honored at the world's only u.n. and memorial cemetery, alongside his 39: comrades who loved korea as their own. blood and sweat as well as friendship and commitment of the veterans are what gave birth to our alliance that continues to evolve, bringing people together and uniting values as one. american service people in korea followed in your set -- footsteps and continue to uphold the values of friendship and solidarity. across the full spectrum of
economies and culture is evolving into a comprehensive alliance. these are assured values that we defend and in so doing, we are striving towards most exemplary lines in history: the one of greatness. the world is now faced with a comment crisis given by a infectious disease and climate change. we have ourselves the power of solidarity and cooperation in this power inspires us to stay hopeful each and every time. build us better is giving us such hope to not only americans but the entire humanity. u.s. and korea at every painful turn in history is every moment of glory has been there for each other as we continue to move forward for every occasion that would call for the strength of alliance, korea will always stand with america. korean war veterans and marine families. in my first overseas trip as president, i visited the battle
memorial. peoples of korea and the u.s. truly humbled by the courage of noble sacrifices by the battle heroes came together as one. they lifted each other's spirits and found each other. the remains of the five years who had been uncovered were repatriated to the united states from korea with the utmost courtesy. while bidding farewell to the wharf euros as they returned to the embrace of their beloved families, korean people to work left with profound emotion and a sense of relief until the very last ones find their way back home the love of their family left behind, the korean government will continue to do its best. last year, we are deploying 100,000 people this year to 41 locations including the dmz to search for remains of fallen soldiers of the korean war. since the first north korean
summit in 2013, they turned over 55 boxes of remains to the u.s. and of these, 74 servicemen were identified. to bring back the brave warriors laid to rest on the soil to the warmth of their family, we will continue striving to keep the dialogue going with north korea. on the korean war bench at the arlington cemetery, we shall never forget the selfless service of our heroes. we shall also remember the soros of the family who lost their heroes. in 2022, when the wall of remembrance stands tall before us, i hope for the future generations of u.s. and koreans will meet their unsung heroes by the great names. in the 1950's, and the land he never knew but for the love of
the country they love. their names will be long remembered as part of great history. the republic of korea will continue to honor the invaluable sacrifices our war veterans made. made of heroes, resting -- may the heroes rest in peace. thank you.
