years ago that american airlines flight 11 flew into the north tower of the world trade center. my name is mike grove, and my daughter, sarah elizabeth grove, was the flight attendant on that plane. these 20 years have felt both a long time, and as we recite the names of those we lost, my memory goes back to that terrible day when it felt like an eagle specter had descended on our world. it was also a time when many people went above and beyond the ordinary. we think about the flight crews, like sarah, the professionals, the fire, the police, and later the volunteers who worked, sifting through loved ones' reamins, they have been through the darkest days of our lives. in the last 20 years ago, my wife and i have been through unspeakable sorrow over the lives that will never be. for years, i have been speaking

out on my daughter's behalf and speaking out for precautions and also for the history to be remembered not as numbers and a date but the faces of ordinary people, people who looked a lot like sarah. at the first memorial ceremony, my wife, bobby, and i, stood with the family members, in the midst of the gray and black world of destroyed buildings. today, this is the memory. we still have stories of all the sons and daughters, of siblings, husbands and wives, grandparents, and friends. as we share these 20 years forward, i find sustenance and a continuing appreciation to all of those who rose to be more

>> my brother john worked on the 104th floor of tower one. when i look back on these last 20 years, i find myself thinking about september 12. and everything that happened after that.

when thousands of us became members of the club we never signed up for. no idea what to do next except to cry. then something unexpected happened. an unlimited amount of kindness kept pouring into each of us, from friends and strangers, the whole country seemed to put its arm around us. that lets me just enough strength to get up the next day. and the day after that, and the day after that. and i realize that all of this kindness and giving reminded me of my brother. my larger-than-life big brother. who loves to make people laugh, that he was always there whenever something was needed.

i loved and admired those things about him, and i began to emulate them. and it made me feel like i was picking up a baton he had left for me. i started working with the 9/11 families, helping them navigate the emotional assess -- process, connecting their concerns but staff and designers and officials. john used to say, you have to have fun. with that, i discovered a zest for acting. a new direction for me, i way to express creatively what i felt inside, a way for me to share stories. everything i was doing gave me the feeling that my brother johnny was with me. you got this, kid. it takes a really long time to figure out who you are and who you were meant to be. all of us had to find new ways

to get there. because if i had given up, my brother would have been so medically. -- matted me. who i am today. i came here with tears, but also a happy heart. to say over the last 20 years, i have learned to live out loud just the way my brother toffee. -- taught me. [applause] ♪

cleats and close for the season. never did i think he would be ripped out of our lives less than one day later. i remember like it was yesterday. you never got to see us grow up, chase our dreams, raju eight schools, never got to help us become adults. you never got to see our nieces and nephews and younger cousins grow up and get married and have families of their own. all we have left is memories of you, how amazing you were as a father and a person the younger kids in the family will never get to hang out with uncle foam bender firsthand. there has been a lot of pain and heartache over the past 20 years and we miss you like crazy every day. from your brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins and her daughter, we miss you every day, dad. it sucks a bunch of cowards had to take the lives of innocent people trying to provide for their family. we will meet again one day and it will be tears of joy when we do. i love you, dad.
