7:11 pm
this guy in the middle, the great speak over the house, mike johnson. great to have you with us. mike: so great to be with you. i'm excited about this night. we all are. kevin: we talked about this they start practicing back in march. that means you've got to marshal the cats and get these guys to work. they can't be out there all morning instead of working with you. mike: they start at 5:30 in the morning. it's a big time commitment. chad: let me run for the democratic lineup, they're the visitors. you can comment here, mr. speaker, on some of these prayers here. leading off and playing second base, raul ruiz, democrat of california. deluzio, democrat of pennsylvania. he will be the pitcher batting second. he's wearing a navy uniform or pittsburgh pie -- wore a pittsburgh pirates uniform. mcgarvey, democrat from
7:12 pm
kentucky, louisville area. injured himself in the first inning of last year's game, broke his foot. he's back behind the plate tonight. johnny olszewski will play left field for the democrats from baltimore. jimmy panetta playing center field, democrat from california, son of former defense secretary and congressman from california as well who used to play. pete aguilar, the shortstop, also will pitch tonight at some point. dan goldman, we have two goldmans, there's a goldman on the republican side, republican from new york, batting seventh. third base kevin mullin will be the d.h. from california. and mike levin, the democrat from california. he'll play right field. he will wear a padres uniform. greg steube on the bump tonight. he's. 25 innings pitched, 18 strikeouts. he's a force at the plate. certainly on the mound. kevin that's been one of the differences here, and mr. speaker as well. republicans the past couple of years have had a little deeper bench. a little more hitting talent.
7:13 pm
a little more on the mound. mike: they have, they're excellent at it. steube trained with major league pitchers to up his game. and the president loves the story of his home run. president trump talks about it all the time. every time steube's name comes up. chad: he jacked it into the left field seats. mike: the president likes the replay. he can tell you every highlight of that game. he loves steube that he hit it. kevin: i shouldn't ask you that, but we got to take advantage. we look at the g.o.p. defense. we're looking at feenstra, finstad, huizenga, pfluger. rounding out the outfield, schmidt, ellzey, stutzman. latrell behind the plate. harrigan, d.h. mr. speaker, usually i breaking news on capitol hill. i'm talking to you. you have news to break to us. about this game. mike: you heard earlier, we broke two amazing records tonight. listen, you heard there were 30,000 tickets sold. the actual final number, i just
7:14 pm
got it, is 30,310 ticks sold. this is like and mlb game. kevin: that's incredible. mike: the amount raised, final fall think, $2.793 million raised for charity. that's remarkable. 45 different charities supported. four college scholarships. we had over 100 sponsors involved in this game. it's an amazing thing. chad: one of the concerns, we talked about this the other day, off three-vote margin in the house of representatives. same rayburn, former speaker of the house, shut this game down for a while. mike: i understand that. chad: it's an issue of concern. mentioned mcgarvey getting hurt last year. the umpire at home plate was knocked over and hit his head badly. what's your thoughts on that? mike: i want to bubble wrap them all. chad: are you ok with the game? a former speaker sent the sergeant at arms to get the
7:15 pm
members out of the field. mike: i love this game. it's great for sportsmanship but you'd be how strong the relationships are between the players on the field, r's and d's, across the board. kevin: first pitch for a strike. steube. chad: ruiz hitting two double, five r.b.i.'s, he's wearing the uniform of mount san jacinto junior college. another nice offspeed offer big bisteube. ruiz if you watched the games before, mr. speaker, he makes contact with some regularity and he is not bad on the base paths. mike: that's exactly right. he's pretty good shape. steube istoo. i mean i tell you what, he's ready for this. he looks forward to this game every year. kevin: chopper to second. not quite handled. what should have been a 4-3 out
7:16 pm
is, i guess connect say reaching on an error, maybe a base hit. chad: i think it's reaching on an error. the republican manager said keep the ball in front of him. he did that. he said to make the easy plays. we said we need to keep people off the base paths. if you get the outs you're supposed to get, that's one of those here on the first bat of the game. i remember ruiz, you remember this, mr. speaker, first game that steve scalise came back after the shoot, he hit the ball right at scalise on the first pitch and scalise got him out at first base. mike: it was like a movie. incredible. he threw it. got the out. went out of the game. it was downhill from there. kevin: high offering by steube there, to deluzio, 1-0. deluzio a .714 batting average. wearing the uniform of the u.s. naval academy jolly rogers. that will advance the runner. this is one of the issues in
7:17 pm
rules. so you don't have stolen bases. they can lead off. but if it's a wild pitch or pass they can advance. the umpire at second base, this is -- he's the umpire of these games for 30 years. congressional game, 30 years. he sent ruiz back. he's a veteran at this. mike: i understand that instinct though. just a bit off the plate. 3-0. kevin: i was going to ask you, mr. speaker, i know i shouldn't, but do you do an impression of the president? you talk to him all the time? do you do a trump when you're not around the president. mike: kevin i don't know what you're talking about that fantastic game. this is huge. look at all these people. this is america. kevin: absolute gold. good stuff. ball four to delosee. two on. not what roger williams wanted. i talked to linda sanchez before
7:18 pm
the game, you know, senator alex padilla was supposed to play first base. he went back to los angeles because of the riots there. they have gil cisneros in the lineup there. he will not hit. kevin mullin will hit d.h. he has a gimpy knee here. linda sanchez said she was disappointed, padilla was expected to pitch at some point, said he was throwing the best he's ever seen, really worked at it. that probably is -- undercuts the democratic squad this year. also that question of stealing. chad: five straight balls thrown by steube. that one out of play. 1-1. mike: what do you think about the democrats with differing jerseys? i don't know. i look like -- i like the republican red. kevin: this morning they came in, at-batting practice, 7:00, they had blue uniforms. mike levin, playing right field,
7:19 pm
he said this is almost offensive to me. it's like dodgers union forms. chad: nice pitch by steube. 1-2. mike: i do like this navy. my son just finished his first year at the naval academy. chad: we have several service academies represented. jack ellzey in center field. mike: top gun pilot. was your son in rotc in high school? mike: he applied and got in on his own merit. they didn't even know what family he was from. johnson you can get away with that. they were like, that kid didn't say who his father was. he made the varsity boxing team as a freshman. i said is on they have a rowing team, you understand, you don't break your face. no, dad.
7:20 pm
kevin: no, dad, i want to hit people. struck him out. first k of the night. as mcgarvey is headed back to the dugout. looked like a little framing there by luttrell. some of the democrats last year thought that they were getting squeezed on some of the pitches a little bit. they were very frank to me about that. in particular deluzio pitching, he of course just struck out. chad: still two aboard for the democrats. olszewski. he has power. batting cleanup for the democrats. outside with that offering. 1-0. i talked about him in the open there. if you look at his campaign ads. they're fascinating. because johnny olszewski goes by johnny o. all the people in his ads in orioles caps. johnny o a baltimore oriole fan.
7:21 pm
mike: that's what you call good marketing. kevin: swing and a miss, 1-1. chad: democrat, if they're going to have a chance in this game given the firing power republicans have, they need somebody like olszewski to produce. there's a lot of pressure on him. took a swing at that one. 1-2. steube once again in business. can i just ask you this, chad. kevin: you've seen several of these games. sometimes the democrats will jump out to a real nice lead. i just remember last year, i thought they were really looking strong early and the republicans reeled them in and of course went on to an easy victory. what are you feeling like tonight? chad: they ran out of gas. you start rolling that republican batting order over and over, it's tough. they needed somebody like olszewski to get these guys on. kevin: that's back-to-back k's by steube. apparently he's learned a little
7:22 pm
something-something. mike: you mentioned the game last year, the final was 31-11. we did all right at the end of the game. kevin: you did. it went this way if you watched early, then you left, you know, get some popcorn or hit the fridge and came back, it was a blowout. like -- 31-11. and a lot of runs late actually too. mike: that's right. kevin: i said at one point in the broadcast, i said we have something i haven't seen in a while. we don't have anybody on base. chad: speaking of good baseball, how about the l.s.u. tigers. mike: they're awesome. how about the l.s.u. s. pilots. the l.s.u.-shreveport. they're undefeated. won the naia championship. and guess what, they're coming to the white house for their
7:23 pm
visit. chad: good for them. i love that. things are change -- things have changed with that. i like the fact that now we're seeing the smaller divisions or what we used to call lower divisions get their fair due. you know. you're a champion. come on up. come see the president. take your victory lap at the white house. i love that stuff. good for them. mike: i got to announce it. they had a big rally in our festival, i couldn't make it, i was here for votes, but i called in and said guess what, gentlemen, you're going to the white house. everybody cheered. it was awesome. kevin: this is jimmy panetta, center fielder for the democrats. mike: jim is a good fellow. kevin: his father, leon panetta, led the budget committee, was the f.b.i. director. he played in this game. he said it was one of the biggest thrills of his life going on to the field with his dad for the game.
7:24 pm
and ladies and gentlemen, we have loaded bases. bearcats jersey right there. cincinnati bearcats perhaps. chad: so this is where democrats again really need to capitalize. we're going to have a runner here. this is where we talked about the runners here. bases loaded. two outs. pete aguilar. democratic shortstop. played everywhere last year. catcher. known for making create great contact. oh! robbed at third! what a play. mike: wow. kevin: great defense by august pfluger. goes to the bag, gets the run eric ends the in, gets out of the jam.
7:25 pm
chad: absolutely awesome baseball. i told you we'd have some fun tonight. how about augie, what a move there. stab, dive, done. we're back with the bottom of the first after this. >> the annual congressional baseball game will resume in a moment. you're watching live coverage on c-span. >> there are many ways to listen to c-span radio, any time, anywhere. in the washington, d.c. area, listen on 90.1 f.m. use our free c-span now app, or go online to c-spanradio.org. on your smart speaker by simply saying play c-span radio. hear our live call-in program "washington journal" daily at 7:00 a.m. eastern. listen to house and senate proceed, committee hear, news conferences and other public affairs events live throughout the day and for the best way to hear what's happening in washington with fast paced

7:27 pm
little while ago in between my watching my great friends on c-span. >> c-span is televising this right now live. so we are not just speaking to los angeles. we are speaking to the country. kevin: welcome back, everybody. walk us through the battle order for g.o.p. chad: steve scalise will lead awful he will not run. he's a quasi-d.h. he survived that shooting at the congressional baseball practice back in 2017, nearly eight years to the day. william timmons who is a congressman from south carolina, he will run for him. randy feenstra will bat later as they roll their lineup over. he'll play first base. eric schmidt, republican senator from missouri, batting second. playing left field. august pfluger at third base. greg steube the pitcher he bats
7:28 pm
fourth. jack ellzey in center field, republican of texas. morgan luttrell, catcher. finstad, the democratic representative from wisconsin. and marlin stutzman. and then bill huizenga, a 10th hitter playing shortstop from michigan. kevin: we'll see if the democrats can do what the g.o.p. did which is shut them down defensively if nothing else at the 11th hour. that was one heck of a play by august flyinger to wrap it up there to end the threat. bases loaded. and the top of the first. he made a terrific play at third. and so still no score on the board. and here we go with the g.o.p. leading off. it's the one and only steve scalise. chad: you see how they put timmons down in that track
7:29 pm
stance. the are very careful to see if he leaves early on contact. kevin: 1-0. high offering. in there are if a called strike. 1-1. chad: timmons has done this as kind of this designated runner for a number of seasons now. he's never had an at-bat, kevin. kevin: scalise, a blooper there. one up, one down. chad: right to the shortstop, pete aguilar. so looking at how the democrats are aligned defensively here, morgan mcgarvey mind the plate. cisneros at first base. ruiz at at second. dan goldman of new york city at third base. olszewski at left. mike levin in right field. morgan mcgarvey. kevin: in there for another called strike. schmidt from missouri.
7:30 pm
chad: he's been active. 4-7 in his career. .571 batting average. two doubles, one triple. kevin: 1-1. another one in there for a strike. one ball, two strikes. that's a really nice little piece of work there. if you're going to try to get it over the plate and you know you're not going to three 80, 90, just be patient. he reaches out for that one. he's going to touch down for a base hit. first hit of the night for the g.o.p. eric schmidt getting things going here in the bottom of the first. chad: this is the great play that august pfluger made to end the inning. kind of getting the democrats out of that rally. very important for the republicans with the bases loaded. and now he's coming to the plate and with the ducks on the pond here he might be able to get somebody. in that's the goal of the
7:31 pm
republicans here. kevin: they played -- plated 31 last year. sure they'd love to have something like that again this year. just a bit outside. 1-0. chad: we talk about chris deluzio here, he got the loss in last year's game. had a 27.46 e.r.a. in 4 spent innings, two strikeouts. kevin: chopper foul, 0-2. chad: this is the problem for the democrats. when they started to go through this middle of the lineup here. pfluger, steube, schmidt. there's a lot there. this is where chris deluzio wore out last year. as you mentioned earlier, they kind of hung on rather well early on. good block there by mcgarvey. catcher. keeping the ball from going all the way to the back stop. kevin: heim not a navy guy, i
7:32 pm
may have to reach out to delosee and see if i can get one of those. nice jersey there. that one is caught, going back to first, not in time to catch schmidt. two outs. jimmy panetta, the center fielder out there. moving rather well. you know, chad, i mentioned this. this is one of the real challenges, if you're not used to covering that kind of real estate it can be really daunting and you're doing your level best to get out there and make the plays. nicely donethere. chad: and look at how he really tracked that ball well, coming in, immediately going to first base, he knew where that play was to try to catch the base runner. kevin: inside. 1-0. chad: greg steube, probably the biggest weapon overall on the g.o.p. side. kevin: representing the 17th district, including sarasota, what an amazing town that is. that one outside2-0.
7:33 pm
chad: steube can pitch. steube can hit. 9-18 in his career with a .500 batting average. kevin: that one comes in right on the hands and fouled out of play. looks like somebody got a nice little souvenir there. chad: steube, when he came back a couple of years ago, he had fallen off his roof and they weren't sure whether or not he'd be able to play. this was in the off-season. and he came back about six weeks later. he had serious injuries. was in the hospital for a bit. he didn't lose a step at all on the diamond. certainly none of his power. kevin: the 2-2. outside. full count.
7:34 pm
what do you think of the new bats? chad: that's something i talked to the democrats about. they were wondering if there were certain bats the republicans might be use, not the torpedo bats but bats that aren't necessarily legal at other levels of the game. they're watching that closely. kevin: steube draws a walk. bring up jack ellzey. center fielder. 4-13 in his congressional career. four games played. hitting .308. chad: he was the right fielder last year. blake moore, vice chair of the republican conference, usually played centerfield, got hurt. blake moore was actually playing in the congressional soccer game, there is such a thing, and a congressional basketball game, hockey game. he was playing goalie. hurt his shoulder. can't play. roger williams said he was going to fine blake moore $500 and blake moore, he might be, we
7:35 pm
talked about steube's athleticism here. black moore is right up there. he won the heisman high school trophy back in 1997. kevin: that's legit. three straight shots right up near the helmet you see the smile there. chad: you have that in a big league game, weave different proposition here. kevin: here it gets a smile. not so much sometimes in the major leagues. skipper of the democrats there. 3-0. he goes for that high one. it's a slow dribbler. that could be trouble. it is trouble. chad: they throw it into the dugout, a first run will score for the g.o.p. deluzio, the pitcher, getting over to cover there that'll be a throwing error for the democrats on gil cisneros playing first base. before the game i talked to cisneros, i said when this is last time you played first base? it was supposed to be alex padilla.
7:36 pm
he said last time played first base was in high school. he gets to the ball. close play at first. deluzio did a good job recovering there fired it into the dugout. raul ruiz also trying to get over there. that might be one, this is something that on the republican side roger williams talked about. he said don't make the throw if you don't have to. maybe that one they shouldn't have made the teleon. kevin: just like that, the g.o.p. out in front. 1-0. chad: unearned run. kevin: morgan luttrell, g.o.p. catcher. takes a look at that one. nibbles the outside of the plate0. -1. chad: luttrell 3-5 for an average of .600, a double and a triple. kevin: representing the eighth in texas. that was also in there for a strike. 0-2. nice offering there by deluzio.
7:37 pm
chad: talked to luttrell the other day if there was any complacency by the g.o.p. after winning all these games by a wide margin. he said absolutely not. we are really not going to let off the gas. in fact he gave kind of a pep talk to the squad a couple of mornings ago. he said absolutely not. kevin: give morgan a little credit there, well done behind the plate to stab that one. chad: throwing the ball away, wild pitches, got him. kevin: fine piece of pitching there by chris deluzio shuts down the inning for the republicans. but not before they plate one. they lead 1-0. >> democracy. it isn't just an idea. it's a process. a process shaped by leaders. elected to the highest offices. and entrusted to a select few with guarding its basic principles. it's where debates unfold.

could be in no man's land. indeed it's going to fall in there. kevin: aguilar going back. in the infield. olszewski fields it, gets it become to the infield. getting that leadoff batter on. chad: that was a valiant effort by aguilar. didn't quite get there. but i would score that a hit for sure. kevin: he started, as soon as he turned his back, that's a hard, over the shoulder, willie mays style catch to make there. always tough when you get your leather on that. chad: so close. he did give it a shot. that's what we call a good bit of work behind the plate for mcgarvey to hang on to this one. kevin: this is pat harrigan, freshman republican, rookie as we say in congressional terms. he's the d.h. he's somebody who roger williams told me expects to use a lot. might not be quite the same level of hitter as steube or some of these guys.
7:51 pm
but an up and coming prospect as they would say. he can pitch a little bit. and you know who roger williams compared him to? chad: who? kevin: rhineodon. a guy who pitched back in the 1950's and 1960's. threw absolute smoke. kevin, there's an example where the runner is allowed to advance. that's a wild pitch. kevin: yeah. chad: no stealing. that gets through the catcher. so the runner advances. and so roger williams, he played for the braves' farm system back in the early 1970's. used to bring in baseball players, old baseball players to speak to congress. remember he brought in brooks robinson, a gold glover, famous gold glover for the baltimore orioles to talk to these guys. outfield and third base. which means he's got a rifle
