and their spouses. gov. walz: thank you for being here. in a moment, you will hear from law enforcement officials who will share with you what they can about the situation here in minnesota. i will be joined by commissioner bob jacobson, and state patrol corporal christina bogojevic as well as the mayor of brooklyn park. we are here today because an unspeakable tragedy has unfolded in minnesota. my good friend and colleague speaker melissa hortman and her husband mark were shot and killed in what appears to be politically motivated assassination. our state lost a great leader, and i lost the dearest of friends. speaker hortman was someone who serve the people of minnesota with great compassion, humanity,

and a sense of service. she was a formidable public servant, a fixture at a giant in minnesota. she woke up every day determined to make this state a better place. she is irreplaceable, and will be missed by so many. minnesota's thoughts and prayers are with her families, or loved ones, her children, and her parents. my prayers also go out to state senator john hoffman, he and his wife, who were shot multiple times. the hoffmans are out of surgery at this time, and we are cautiously optimistic they will survive this a test nation attempt. this was -- this assassination attempt. this was an act of targeted political. peaceful discourse is the foundation of our democracy. we don't settle our differences with violence or at gunpoint. in the state of minnesota and as recently as last week in the

most closely divided state legislator in the country, we sit down, we work things out, we debated, we compromised, and we serve the state of minnesota together. we proved it was possible, even if politically charged times, to find compromise and adhere to the principles of democracy and civil discourse. we must all, minnesota and across the country, stand against all forms of political violence. at the precipice of the moment we are on, this tragic act here in minnesota should serve as a reminder to all of us that democracy and the debates in the halls of congress, and state houses, in school boards is a way to settle our differences peacefully and move society to a better place. we are collaborating with all local, state, and federal agencies on a full

investigation. we are committed to keeping minnesotans and as this situation continues. i assure you that those responsible for this will be held accountable, and each and every one of us are committed to making sure that a tragedy like this never repeats itself, in minnesota or across this country. i would now like to turn it over to my public safety team to fill you in on the specifics of this ongoing investigation. >> thank you, governor, and thank you, everyone, for being here today. my name is drew evans, and i and the superintendent for the minnesota bureau of criminal apprehension. i want to start by expressing our deepest sympathies to the communities, families, and friends come and everybody that cared about the individuals that were gunned down today. when you have individuals like this in our political leadership, they are not only political leaders, they are members of the community.

the tragedy in a situation like this is not only for them, their friends and families, but us collectively. they represent us in a state of minnesota as a whole. about 2:00 a.m. this morning, there was an original call where there was an individual that had shot senator hoffman and his wife. police responded to that location, and working through that process, later on at approximately 3:35, another call came in, and it was officers proactively check in, because they knew of an incident that had occurred, and they were going to check speaker hortman at that time, at which time police officers encountered an individual who immediately fired at them, and they exchanged gunfire. the individual was able to escape during that exchange of gunfire. at the residence, there were

life-saving measures that were provided. both individuals were transported, as was previously noted, and they both received surgeries for their injuries at the hospital, and their conditions at this time, both senator hoffman and his wife are alive at this time, but they suffered gunshot wounds, but we are cautiously optimistic that they will continue to improve. at this time, it's a very active scene still, as you've seen. the brooklyn park police department along with other members, the sheriff's office, state patrol, fbi, and others are actively engaged in a manhunt for the individual that we believe is responsible for this. we will be showing the identity of those individuals as this progresses, but i'm going to cautious you. i know there will be a ton of interest in this. we are not in a position to do that as we are actively searching for that individual. right now, just as noted, we

have teams, the sheriff's office working at the scene that occurred there, and also between brooklyn park and brooklyn park police, the fbi, and then the individuals that were killed, we will be doing autopsies of those individuals to determine the extent of their injuries and how they passed away, from gunshot wounds. i will answer questions after commissioner of public safety jacobson speaks, but we will be happy to take a few questions. cmmr. jacobson: thank you, superintendent evans. my name is bob davidson. it's my honor to serve as the commissioner of public safety for the state of minnesota. this is a dark day today for minnesota and for democracy. but we will not allow fear or violence to define who we are or

how we move forward. we will stand together, and we will stand strong. our hearts, of course, go out to the victims, their families, their colleagues at the capitol, and the communities that they serve, with dedication and with integrity. these are public servants. leaders who committed their lives to improving the lives of others, and they were targeted in a violent and cowardly way. the suspect exploited the trust of our uniforms, that our uniforms are meant to represent, that the trail is deeply disturbing to those of us who wear the badge with honor and responsibility. we want to reassure the public that there is increased security in place for elected officials and others who may be

at risk. if you see anything suspicious, especially involving individuals and -- individuals impersonating law enforcement, please report it immediately by calling 911 or your local police department. with that, i will step back, and we will be available for any questions. thank you. >> we will answer questions. please do not forget to introduce yourself and your media organization. [inaudible] >> -- night, and then police encountered someone with a gun and then exchanged gunfire. >> good morning. police chief with the police department. question is, how did you get to representative hortman's house.

the circumstances existed that we assisted the champlin police department, and we were at senator hoffman's home. the sergeant asked our officers to go check on melissa hortman's phone, a representative that lives in our community, just as due diligence. that police officer and his partner pulled down the street, when they arrived at melissa's house, they noticed a police vehicle in the driveway with emergency lights on and what appeared to be a police officer at the door, coming out of the house. officers confronted them, he immediately fired upon the officers, and the suspect retreated back into the home. >> was as an actual police officer come impersonating a police officer? chief brutally: yes, the question is was it was a police officer. it was not a police officer. it is clearly someone

impersonating a police officer, again, you are trust of this badge. >> [inaudible] police officer when they approached the victim? chief bruley: yes, the question is, what kind of vehicle, and how they dress? they had a vehicle that looked exactly like an suv squad car. they had emergency lights that looked exactly like a police vehicle, and yes, they were wearing a vest with a taser, other equipment, a badge very similar to mine, that someone would assume that they are a police officer. >> can you describe the moments after that played out? and then can you help us understand that 10, 15 minutes? chief bruley: yeah. briefly, though i want to remind

everyone this is an active investigation viewed we have thousands of people shelter-in-place and brooklyn park right now. we have an extensive manhunt involving hundreds of police officers and swat teams, searching the area as we believe the suspect fled out the back of the house could very briefly, after the officers had an exchange of gunfire and the suspect retreated into melissa's home, they immediately went up the threshold, they took the mail, drug them out to safety to render first aid, but he was presidentially after that. additional officers and resources and ultimately went in and then found a female in the home. >> [inaudible] chief bruley: i would say yeah, somewhere around five or six months. >> how much do you know --or is

this -- chief bruley: yeah. it was knocking on the door and asking someone to come out, impersonating a police officer. we do have the suspect was the car. the suspect is on foot. that is what the large-scale searches focusing on. i know it has been a long time since we gave the alert out to continue to shelter-in-place good we are reminding them that if somebody comes to the door, knocking on the door, claiming to be a police officer, please do a couple of things. one, call 911. if they are a police officer, dispatch will be able to confirm that they are a police officer. we have also ordered all police in brooklyn part of a cannot of rogue anyone alone, they have to be in pairs. if there's only one person outside the door, do not answer the door. call 91. if it is in a partner assisting, they will come in pairs of two

or more. >> [inaudible] chief bruley: i'm sorry, one more time? >> do you know if they say anything, when they knocked on the door? chief bruley: we do know they did, but i'm going to hold that back as part of the investigation right now. >> [inaudible] chief bruley: this is a very large-scale search. we have detained several people and questioned them, but we do not have anybody in question at this time. >> [inaudible] chief bruley: we have people of interest we are looking at. >> is there anything else to suggest that this is politically motivated? chief bruley: i'm going to hold back, most of the information, until it is completed. this is rapidly evolving, just occurred a few hours ago. we have partners from the fbi, the dca, the sheriff's office, and almost every one in the community helping. it is very complex.

we are working on it. when we did a search of the vehicle, there was a manifesto that identified many lawmakers and other officials. we immediately made alerts to the state, took action on alerting them and providing security where necessary. i will stop there. >> chief, thank you very much. we will take one more question. >> you used the word "targeted." [inaudible] supt. evans: so the question is, were they targeted, and when we used the word wine, as noted, -- as chief bruley noted, there was a list of individuals on that list. we are looking at that, as the chiefs estimate is far too early in the investigation to be able to provide information, but i do think we will be in a position where we can develop the motivation behind these attacks,

and we will be able to provide more information as it unfolds. that's one reason we are leaving and based on preliminary information, telling you where this is headed, but we will get a lot more work done and are working on that to provide that with a degree of accuracy. >> thank you. thank you.
