russia wants to bring your up to its knees without firing a shot to sign visual dots may 14th on dw, the this is dw news coming to live from berlin. major de escalation of the trade for china in the united states agreed to slash reciprocal terrace. after high level talks in geneva over the weekend, us officials say each side has agreed to lower terrace by 150 percentage points spring 90 day. also coming up ukraine's president challenges vladimir putin to meet in person for peace talks and turkey, allowing me as lensky is offered, comes after a proposal by the russian leader for direct negotiations between moscow and keep this thursday and german present for my father's time. i'll welcomes his is rarely counterparts. isaac had sought to berlin for

a state visit marketing 60 years of diplomatic relations between the 2. come the little m. terry martin, thanks for joining us. china in the united states have agreed to drastically reduce tariffs on both sides after a weekend of trade talks in switzerland, us treasury secretary scott best and says the discussions were robust and the both side showed great respect while representing their own natural interest. the 2 countries have now agreed to suspend most tariffs for 90 day. china says it will retain 10 percent chance on us goods. while us will continue with 30 percent tariffs. beijing and washington had been locked in a trade war that has threatened to up and the global economy. let's hear more of
12:02 pm
what scott besson had to say. of the consensus from both delegations this weekend is neither side once a couple weeks. and what had occurred with these very high tariffs, as investors were said, was and bought the equivalent of an embargo. and neither side wants that. we do want trade. we want more balance trade. and i think the both sides are committed to achieving that. i asked or dw east asia correspond, melissa chad about chinese reactions to the agreement. well, it's definitely big news in china. it is the front page headline of the people's daily, which is the national state media paper. but i think in the coming days and coming hours, it will be interesting to see how people on line in china respond to this uh,
12:03 pm
at 1st glance. uh, i would say that the interpretation would be that you as president donald trump blinked who's tariffs were essentially, as of his own treasury, secretary said in a bar, go and needed to be a while back. and the difficult thing of course, is let's not to re forget the fact that there is just for 90 days. we don't know what's going to happen. and depending on the year of who you as president donald trump is listening to just before the end of those 90 days a we could be in globally for yet another roller coaster ride. so from the chinese perspective, again, the summary i think is that the americans have back down. and 2nd of all, we still don't know regardless of that, what's going to happen in 90 days. was the thank you very much for now. data is most of the trend there in taipei and stephen beardsley from dw business is in the
12:04 pm
studio here with me to break it all down for us a steven a 115 percentage point drop in tariff. that's a huge turnaround. is that? yeah, it is. terry and i think the list is right, you can definitely come away thinking this is a step back from the us side, especially when we look at the language going in. and it stated goals over and over again is 30 percent effective tariff. and if trying to solve the fentanyl issue, which is one of the big problems here, that's 20 percentage points of that 30 percent. then technically that would be a 10 percent baseline tariff on china. and a timing with which this administration has stressed over and over again that it wants to fundamentally restructure the relationship. so i think we have to look at this and think that this is an effort to really reset these talks based on what has been an unsuccessful introduction so far. i can't imagine any other assessment of it right now. this is really just for 90 days though. first of all the suspension. right? so they're not talking about ending them completely just yet or wherever. where does it go from here? are they going to be more talks?
12:05 pm
we don't know. right. we don't know what we do know is that they're saying on the us side there will be further talks and for the negotiations. and then there's also been talk about a mechanism for communication between the 2 sides. the chinese side, for example, has said that i have it here somewhere that there will be rolling consultations on a right regular, an ad hoc basis. and it said the working level trade talks could be held as needed to me. that doesn't sound like really a bunch of talks or sort of set out for the next 90 days. that could be wrong. but from what we're hearing so far, it sounds like 1st there's been a reset and agreement to generally talk more. but we have to walk away wondering what is the goal here again, if we take the trump administration add, it's where there wants to fundamentally restructure trade with china. that would require much higher tier of spend 10 percent and 30 percent likely as well. so you have to wonder what's going to go on with fentanyl issue 1st of all, and then what's going to go on it's gonna be more purchase is required from the chinese side. are there going to be formal negotiations in this direction, or is it going to be panic at the end of 90 days and
12:06 pm
a threat of new tests which we just don't know? so still out of question many questions here. what does all this tell us about the balance of power steve, between china in the us, i think it reminds us of something we've already known, terry, which is that this is a deep relationship and that the prospect of both economies depends on the other. so extract in one country extracting itself and that's going to be very difficult. and when you have a president like donald trump, who likes to shoot from the hip and doesn't really formulate long term, broad based strategies, then you're going to have issues really on tethering this relationship in a normal way. what we saw is very chaotic way. and this appears again to be the administration trying to take a step back from that. we've seen the dollar, we gain strength, which is a good thing. we're seeing market street this, that's what the administration probably wants to see at this point. but i can't imagine they're happy with a messaging that's going to follow this. and so you have to wonder if there's going to be more term well coming in the future because it doesn't seem like trump is going to meet his goals with this 90 day period. and that means everyone's going to have to brace probably for a bit more to a terminal. so you can thank you very much. stephen beardsley from dw business. now

to efforts to end the war and ukraine and ukraine is your pin allies had called for russia to implemented policies, fire starting today. but instead they got a new proposal from russian president vladimir putin, for direct talks between the 2 sides in turkey. this thursday, ukraine's present belong mrs. lansky says he'll be there in person that has urged, present, pretend to do the same as offer comes after being pushed to agree to talked about us present. donald trump, as much as the some of the new grains, few grains president has laid down the challenge to oblige the mid points in, you know, so just making this offer a follow in the russian presidents i own proposal for direct talks between the 2 countries in east central this week to put them on, we await a ceasefire. this proposal is on the table full of full and conditional ceasefire, one that the last long enough to provide and necessary foundation for diplomacy
12:08 pm
could bring peace significantly closer. a young i will be in turkey, this thursday may 15th story and i expect booting to come to turkey as well in person also. and i hope that this times but you wouldn't be looking for excuses as to why he could not make it interesting. and we are ready to talk, look, to end this war thursday to, to be turkey, to a storage you must do floods the middle points and blames ukraine for interrupting previous talk centers. some of those that ended abruptly off to russia's invasion of ukraine in february 2022 boots and pulled reports us in the kremlin early on sunday, the trasha is now ready to reopen negotiations for those right. maintenance through the city. we want to serious talks with ukraine. the goal is to eliminate the root cause of the computer to reach an enduring and long lasting piece, leveling it. they'll go through each know who attends words will met with duration by ukrainians on the streets of keith. solutions to some lady in the

kitchen is a coward, he is afraid of us ever since he does us to save himself. why should we trust him now? who didn't tell me it showed and is trying to buy time. it is just an empty tours of no consequence. nature, who knows a symbol in it for 3 minutes means the carpet pause, but obviously we could do that as well. that's true. but the weekends diplomats of discussions release or response for ukrainian troops on the front line was to be no laptop in the fights and have since the law or what he's to and rushes us real victory day for the meeting on new york. there is no trees lock on right side dying . we left off families behind the law, 5 music assistance whom we must be fine. and as long as the hans, i can be taken of it, we will move forward with going on our side. yes sir. do you have to put red but, and we are constantly just sitting there by so called truce agency spiders, that that they are pulling in their day munitions,
12:10 pm
but their people are not. they are constantly seating off your bill model as besieged ukrainians. to view is clear, the debris offering, you'd rushing, shelling in the sea to of her song that can only hold that the talks proposing is symbol will bring alone a way to break through. so lots to unpack here to help us with that. we've got the w as an economy and keep and you already reset to with all that being capital re good. that's d w as base for reporting on russia. now since being expelled from the country, nick, your pen leaders have called for 30 days, so he's biased starting today monday. but that doesn't seem to be materializing, does it? no sign of any change here. we've been talking to the soldiers in the front line. they say nothing has changed from a week ago, from the 3 days, so called a victory day to step to, to in the cold. and now of to this european ultimatum, it is all the same drone attacks of the night of lots of ukrainian regions. and now is the question, what are the europeans going to do?
12:11 pm
they put their credibility on the line, hit on task date, and keep saying, if putin doesn't agree to a 30 day supply without any use and bucks, then ukraine will get more weapons. and also they will be most anxious to get the rest of the meeting today. the european farm is in london. talk about that. but certainly the trainings are expecting some kind of strong signal because otherwise that obviously doesn't look very impressive if boots and gets to know. obviously it's fine and there are no consequences. yuri, russia's present blooded me 15, proposed negotiations and assemble this thursday. a lot of it, as a landscape says he will be there personally to meet the protein for face to face talks. do you see a summit between the russian and ukrainian presidents happening there? so i think it's important for 14 now, for the national president to say face and his logic says don't turn off the lesson for the distance and don't turn off the ukrainians. don't leave the nation, had teeth to the all of those. he's nighttime speech as a weekend was such a signal. often before you pull the patients, bloodstone know,
12:12 pm
try and put the pressure on him publicly. what do you promptly came up with the idea of direct negotiations in the near future, but importantly, given not agree to the ceasefire as urgent, good demand advised the best. so it's important for fortune to say to the russians . i thought of it will. i will be able to end it at the same time. it's important for pointing not to put relations with donald trump at risk, which i'm very important as drunk is pushing for an immediate and because of war. so i think visit options go back in, they sent a high ranking delegation for each company, but i would be very surprised to put in came to is to both go to sleep off the old . he's been disparaging, the landscape and nazi and the drug and use it for years and has not recognized his legitimacy as if you create new president. nick, where is the us in all of this? do ukrainian leaders field? they now have donald trump's backing what's that? and it seemed that way,
12:13 pm
over the weekends you had all those pictures of the european leaders guarantee of with bullying. zalinski cooling from sitting around that cell phone, trying to talk and seemingly getting his support for everything they were doing. and we heard from top us officials that sci fi is the 1st thing and anything else will only follow off to cease by without pre conditions. keith kellogg, the great invoice saying things that affect and then we had a post yesterday onto the social from donald trump saying, basically with the lensky should go to the stumble irrespective of disease by happening or not. that seems like, you know, we've got trump, that undermining his own sides. negotiating position obviously wouldn't be the 1st time i think for now the trying to work out what the real position is. and if now this meeting in london today gets a kind of new consolidates response to the absence of a cease fire up. but certainly this whole kind of last week is, would be in about the okay, from jimmy trying to make sure soleski and trump speaking with one voice in front of paper over those cracks that we saw in the oval office or in the, in the jury. if talks between ukraine and russia do take place in some
12:14 pm
form this week, what can we expect to come out of the present putting says he wants to tackle the root causes of the conflict, but must go and keep it very different views on that. yeah, it's tricky. i think that both sides of seasons house in a better position today, even 3 as a goal, when the forest is tumbled, talks to base. i tell you as the russians now sees themselves to be able to occupy more territory militarily. at the same time, however, russian troops on not as deep ukrainian territory today as they were 3 years ago. this in turn could give the credit in small confidence event for years ago. from this perspective, both positions would be more how didn't to be bought because it pressure to find the compromise is enormous and does it options side has also stuff that a lot of losses off the fee is a for i think pushing and we'll definitely try to achieve for ukraine to give up its desire for nathan membership because of that was put in the justification for the war from the start. and at the same time that russians could have nothing
12:15 pm
against you, praise is you membership as an offer. that would be a step full that compared to to 2014, at the time of the my daughter. but listen about you guys close at the ties with a you voice, a huge taboo for the russians. you already were shut out there in rico and nick connelly in t. thank you very much. the but now to the middle east where homos has confirmed it will today release us is really hostage being held in gaza. us present. donald trump describe it as monumental news for hostage to be released is 21 year old as really american soldier. e. done a lead. alexander who was abducted during the october 7th terror attacks in 2023 from us says he could be freed within the next hours as a goodwill gesture to the united states. present troll will travel to the middle east this week. more of this,
12:16 pm
let's go over to our correspondence. emily guardian in jerusalem. emily, what more can you tell us about this plan hostage release? sorry, i couldn't tell you to customer from and that's, that's essentially what we're seeing right now. and as well is the preparations on the way to receive a dental dental exams. alexander and he will be released likely from hong eunice. this is where the red cross will pick them up. they will take him to re military base, and then he is likely going to be taken to a show of hospital in northern televisions. now even though examiners believe to be the only remaining living jewel citizen of the united states and is also still to be held by hamas in gaza. he was on active duty as an audi a folder when he was captured on october 7th of 2023 and the release. his release maximums on recording on the usual time. really, when negotiations between how math and israel have essentially been on have half a century sold. i'm up for over 3 months now. and the fact that this is happening
12:17 pm
now is a down to the fact that the u. s. and how much negotiated directly initially. and i think it is also a sign of the growth and patience of the americans with israel's approach to the hostages them to this me. emily, if you can hear me, we've been told this release was coordinated directly between us and the americans . and that israel has not promised to give anything in return. if you can hear me, what is i was hoping to get out of this small i mean donald trump himself describe this as a step of good faith. my thing come us with this is trying to appease donald trump ahead of his trip to the middle east for the scheduled to start tomorrow. he will visit san diego ravia cuz han being hosted out somewhere else and golf is likely going to see to and these folks. and i think this trip has the potential to kick stopped the negotiations sort of ascension installed. we're also seeing issue

monitoring catastrophe on fulton gall. this relevant fuses to let aiden unless they come us is in a way of trying to find stuff is wrong here, little bit. and this whole thing about to trump will eventually put pressure on his role to a breach of things 5 deal that we'll see a permanent and to this me said we've been hearing anything from is really officials about this a release. what is, what is israel's take on this? i mean us middle east invoice. the woodkalski is speaking with benjamin. that's on yahoo. as we speak, he just came to israel today. he was meant to travel to saudi arabia directory with the review of president donald trump. but then rescheduled after the announcement of the release of a done alexander. but ultimately this whole move of, of this release really is a essentially shows that's the us how 5 step as well. here's the degree because they're engaged with how much directly initially lights runs for media to

a specific week upon egypt. and it does not put this way to governments in a particularly good life right now, especially with these ready public of the prime minister's office to put out a statement this morning saying that this whole release was only possible through quite vigorous policy. and thanks to mid a true pressure, but that is unlikely to go down. well, we're phase where the public money believes that to miss him. yahoo is only going through with his military pressure for his own political survival. not really to bring back the hostages and not zango to one of the hostage and family more like she's a mother of a host of still being kept in golf. and she essentially sites and lots of things. donald trump and the cold on him to and the emily guardian in jerusalem. thank you very much. let's take a look at a few other stories making the headlights the, the curtis stand workers part of your p k. k has announced it's to end its armed

delivered to people and civilians engaged quickly. div located against the mediterranean aid needs to be listed on humanitarian. metro areas needs to be able to flow not somewhere in the future, but now with respect to question regarding the monetary name, god, it is a very important question because i believe there is some sort of a distortion in the world. the image is what it is committed to as a monthly committed to writing strictly according to international humanitarian law . and so military has done it from october 7th and onwards. and we will do it as well. so it's cause live now to are reported matthew moore, who was outside the building a palace uh where that press conference just took place. matthew. uh, my father's time. uh, germany's present is just called for the aide blockade and gaza to be lifted in for
12:23 pm
israel to let aid in not in the future, but now what do you make of those rocks? yeah, this was a strong that intervention. if you lie, you can. when frank thoughts us by my address to the media here and to pronounce, he said, one of the things about this to i'm in is really relationship is the ability to have an open communication. he, he said that the to, to president says, to manage just had open in front talks and, but we also had just now from president had solving. he obviously sees it very differently. they were, he says, that is real, is a loving a to enter into guys and, and i curious how mazda of behavior, like a mafia and said, it was really the job of the, the each organizations to, to, to talk to each other and to agree on on a way to get 8 into a gods or they didn't love it to, to be and stolen or miss miss used or taken for by how much. but do you have this movie between the 2 leaders?
12:24 pm
so one topic in that press conference. the 2 presidents were reviewing 60 years of diplomatic relations since the 2nd world war. what else stood out for you in their press conference, matthew? of what? well, i read things to die was this sense? if you read between the lines what these 2 leaders were saying, our relationship can withstand the current pressure that is going through. and the reason is going through that pressure is because as you say, of the ongoing one guys on, on, on the public opinion here in germany is usually is really government action. 60 percent of germans consider to have a negative opinion of these where the government, at the same time you have politically, does she in the country saying that it is a region of german state to yeah, is real side talk about this time, my asset a couple of things, he said it was a very robust and deep relationship. he said it showed that reconciliation on piece piece and can be reached. and on that you said that it was,
12:25 pm
it was that on 2 things you said it was though, on this remembrance of the past, the shared past that they have also a commitment to democratic values as not really which people a lot of criticism here in germany about whether or not it's really is truly committed to democratic bowers, especially in light of the international criminal court. indictment of benjamin netanyahu for crimes against a good option, honestly, which of course, it's worth remembering that these were the government denies. and benjamin netanyahu denies that germany's relationship with israel is, as you play as really a fundamental it's a cornerstone of german foreign policy. uh so the celebrations are continuing what, what else is planned for today and tomorrow, matthew yeah, there's a, there's a huge 0 plan. so, so the 2 presidents are going to go to a memorial outside just outside berlin. it's a platform, 17 edge where tens of thousands of jewish by the nurse was deported by the nazi
12:26 pm
regime to concentration comp. they're also going to be meeting with use leaders from jump in israel to mark the seventy's unabashedly of a use exchange between the 2 countries. later tonight, when we back here, i'm for state banquets and then tomorrow the 2 men fly and separately to israel where they will visit can boots on the, for the occupants that was attacked by how most her terrorist on october 7th and not as really just showing that boned between the 2 countries as president has oak said his father was president as part of his father said, i know what made a promise to israel that in the sixty's to, to, to always, to never leave israel site and move it to let us real don't present hetzel said to the that germany it was a model for model clarity and inside the it showing that it was living up to that promise. but as you think the very much that was the w reported matthew moore, in berlin a terry martin, thanks for watching the
