Dinesh Dinesh, as part of Janastu and Servelots groups, has been exploring tech engagements for "Indian/South needs" through a rural research lab ( iruway.janastu.org ) set up near Bangalore. Research activities have been generally oriented towards Web content accessibility issues for the low-literate users. Decentralized local mesh networks, indigenous archives, and Web Annotation tools frame the context of activity. A community radio on the mesh using Raspberry Pi based media...

Peter Wang Anaconda, Inc. It's possible that terms like "decentralization" and "p2p" are actually a poor fit to describe the long-term goals of many who are working in this space. I propose a different take - namely, orthogonality - that emphasizes agency and lack of capture, without encumbering notions fixated on legacy transport-layer brokenness. What will You learn? I propose a new set of conceptual dimensions along which to think about our various projects. Even if...

Why is it that on the internet the best information is often locked behind paywalls? Brewster Kahle, founder of The Internet Archive, believes it’s time to turn that scarcity model upside down and build an internet based on abundance. Here he'll share a new project — Democracy’s Library — a free, open, online compendium of government research and publications from around the world. Why? Because democracies need an educated citizenry to thrive. How we can start to abandon the...

Town of Mendocino. I stayed there 3 of the 5 nights during Dweb at Camp Navarro. Just a few images. No stop lights, one gas station, about $9 per gallon! Tiny, quaint, foggy in the mornings or late nights. Bar next to my hotel was bustling at night, probably the only place to go in the evenings, but I was too tired to check it out. The one grocery store I found, "Harvest at Mendosa's" was quite nice, a nice selection of local wines and etc.

Building days prior to the event brought out the best qualities about the DWeb community. We were a supportive mesh network fueled by excitement to share the spaces we've built and created. In mere days the camp grew from 70 participants to over 400 with members coming from all corners of the world. Volunteers: plan on arriving at the Farm at 10 AM on Monday. We'll be building bulletin boards, laying cable, painting signs....and getting ready for 400 new friends!

Our current systems do a great job at incentivizing the startups that tackle the near-term engineering challenges, especially when there is an immediate path to revenue. However, we need significantly better systems to incentivize answering the fundamental unanswered questions that will unlock the path to our long-term prosperity. Are impact markets the answer? Let's figure it out together! The...
