Deep Space orignally was supposed to be a completely different short film using the space invaders beginning, which was filmed a month after Copyright Craze was made. Then we lost interest in stop motion for a while. When we became interested in Brickfilming once more a few months ago, we took a look at the clip and decided to make a more elaborate film using it. The end result was what you see here, a five minute adventure with two brothers and a portal filled with surprises.
We've added onto the stories of other Matt and Cal films and tied some strings together in this one. Twilight Trouble and Forum Addiction seem more feasible now that a few things have been explained. There's much more planned for the story in future films, which hopefully we'll get around to making.
Just to clear one thing up: For those of you who do not who what "Deus Ex Machina" means, it is derived from the latin word, which means "An unexpected, artificial, or improbable character, device, or event introduced suddenly in a work of fiction or drama to resolve a situation or untangle a plot". This literary device was primarly selected to be in this film as Matthew learnt about it in school and Cody really liked the concept.
Another thing to take note of is the flashbacks, which were somewhat inspired by Family Guy (Family Guy has alot of flashbacks that are displayed in a similar manner to the ones in Deep Space). There are also some spoofs in this film. One is a line said by Robin in the original 1960's Batman show. The other spoof is the news scene at the end, which is taken from anchorman. The amateurism of the news broadcast (mostly the dialogue) and the broadcaster's name are rip-offs from the film.
Finally, a huge thank-you goes out to Saulgoode, Cometgreen, and Fll-Freak. These three indivuals managed to promptly get their share of the work done while busy with various more important real life esponsibilites. Not only that, but the final result was great! Had they not offered their great expertise in green/blue screening this film it most likely would have either not have been finished or would have looked like crap due to horrendous screening. One last thing to note is that while filming this movie Matthew's animation skills were rusty at the beginning, but they came back quickly and some of the animation is our best yet.
