Recorded on Christmas Eve, 1988, the Disism cassette “Down The Chimney” has been a favorite of Kaswan and Goff since its release by Taped Rugs Productions in 1989. The recording employs a tape loop system similar to the “Frippertronics” variety made popular by Brian Eno and Robert Fripp in the 1970’s. All the pieces on the 90 minute recording were improvised and unrehearsed.
Kaswan and Goff generated sounds with electronic guitars, cello, toys, a modified digital keyboard, sound effects, and homemade instruments (including a large assemblage of plastic bottles attached to a plywood board, rigged with electronic pick-up microphones). Old Christmas records, a telephone operator training cassette, and cut-up sound bites related to the home porting of the battleship USS Missouri in San Francisco were also fed into the tape loop mix at various intervals.
