what's the other thing we're sort of learning now about these charges. maybe come back live and take a look at tesla super charger here and these things, maria, can be hacked and, you know, there's a lot of chargers out here now and i'll leave you with the numbers and right now about 47,000 charging stations, 118,000 charging ports, and according to one company they are prone to be hacked. no serious incidents yet but, you know, new cars, different stuff, different technology, different problems. maria: and made in china. let's not forget that, jeff. thank you so much, jeff fox, great reporting, jeff. the next hour of morningings with maria begins right now. good monday morning, everybody. thanks very much for joining us this morning. i'm maria bartiromo and it is monday, october 10 and 8:00 a.m. on the east coast. violence hitting way too close to home for new york
8:01 am
gubernatorial candidate lee zeldin has gunfire erupted at his doorstep and two teenagers injured in what looks like a drive by shooting and zeldin's teen daughters home at the time feet away. congress zeldin joining us right now. congressman, thank you for being here and how are you doing and how is your family? >> the girls were shaken by what happened and my wife and i had just left the columbus day parade in the bronx when we received a phone call from mckayla. we have identical twins, 16-year-old girls. mckayla is freaking out and arianna is in the background on the phone with police. by 2:19 my girls were calling 911 and sitting at the kitchen table doing homework and they're hearing gunfire. one of the bullets left-hand laned 30 feet from where they were -- landed 30 feet from where they were sitting. two people shot laying down from 10 feet or so from where they were sitting. the girls heard the gunfire and
8:02 am
heard the screams and went upstairs and locked themselves in the bathroom and called 911, called us, and thank god it wasn't worse but literally crime showing up on our front doorstep. getting back to our house, we had to go through crime scene tape. we were being told to be careful where we're walking because there were law enforcement finding blood on our property. # we opened up our security camera footage and see them all cross, these three people across our security camera footage and we worked with law enforcement, but my daughters, they certainly were champs in how they responded to this and very swiftly and very smartly. maria: they really are and i'm praying for them and your family and the people of new york. what do we know about the shooters? >> i don't know anything about the shooters to be honest with you. i know the suffolk county police put out a press release that said something about the
8:03 am
shooting coming from a black vehicle. i do know that from our security camera footage we do have different vehicles passing by our property so hopefully that's enough of a lead where law enforcement is further along than what i'm aware of, but i don't know who shot these two people, i don't know what the motive was. i've seen some reporting that it was gang related but that's just from some of the reporting i've seen. i did not actually hear that yesterday from suffolk county police department directly. plea: congressman -- maria: this is ironic that it happens at your doorstep and your priority in running for governor has been to get safe streets back again in new york. you said on day one you're going to fire the da who has enabled this cashless bail to continue where you've got criminals committing crimes, murder, attacks, and they get processed and then they're back on the
8:04 am
streets to do it again hours later because of that cashless bail. >> i mean, 24 hours to the minute earlier than when this all went down, i was sitting right there on that porch doing an interview with miranda devine and i called up miranda last night to fill her in. i mean, there was a person who was laying downright under where she was sitting interviewing me. we're having an interview about crime. just yesterday there were other crimes that somebody got stabbed on a new york city subway, someone else got slashed in the east village. we can recap the amount of crime from the last week, week and a half and you'd think we were recapping the amount of crime around the state over the course of the last year. there was a woman murdered last wednesday in the buffalo area in front of her three kids by her husband. her husband the day before was arrested and charged with a slew of domestic violence offenses, released on cashless bail, that's on tuesday.
8:05 am
on wednesday she gets murdered in front of her three kids and she was wearing a bullet proof vest. we know about the person dead from long island getting shot and killed getting a cup of hockey checking out on parents weekend. the goblin gang. the four people getting stabbed with the knife attacks last thursday in a period of about ten hours on a new york city subway. that list goes on. we do need to roll back pro criminal laws up in albany and cashless bail and less is more and the corrections officers are being assaulted more and we need to remove district attorneys that refuse to enforce the law and we have to start unapologetically backing our men and women in law enforcement. we have to take back our streets. this is something that motivated me to get into this race in the first place. now i have to walk through crime scene tape in order to show up at my own front doorstep yesterday? this is getting worse every single day and the people in charge are not only not doing squat about it, they don't even want to talk about it. they don't want to confront this
8:06 am
head on. as a matter of fact they feel like they haven't gone far enough in passing pro criminal laws. maria: in fact, governor cath reigns leading hochul in new york -- cathy hochul in new york said she's not discussing cashless bail till after the election and she's under fire of promoting a major advocate of the state's reform law to be one of the top legal advisers. according to linked in, joshua norkin, the project coordinator -- the decarceration project at legal aid society was promoted in july. your reaction to that and, congressman, have you ever seen new york in such a position? have you seen it this bad before? >> no, absolutely not. not in my lifetime and, listen, i was younger when the stories from the '80s were impacting families inside of new york city very hard. i saw an interview over the weekend with former democratic governor david patterson who was
8:07 am
reflecting on the '80s and '90s when the violence was bad then and he says he feels more unsafe today than he felt unsafe back then in the '80s and early '90s before rudy giuliani first came in. now cathy hochul picks brian benjamin who was on top of the scandals that led to the arrest and resignation, he was the champion of defund the police movement and now there's a new story of the person getting elevated and promoted inside of cath cathy hochul's inner circumstance and will a champion of the defund the police movement and cashless bail needs revoked and cathy hochul is saying essentially you have to elect her to find out where maybe she'll stand on the issue in january and also says there's no data to support it: when you talk about data and is statisti, there are three kids not growing
8:08 am
up with a mother in the buffalo area because they watched her get murdered last wednesday because of cashless bail, because judges don't have discretion to weigh danger nows. maria: unbelievable. i know cashless bail is largely behind all of this and just bad policy in new york, but what about the wide open border? five more migrant buses arrived in new york's port authority so far this morning. we're seeing a continuation of illegal migrants coming into new york. where are they going? what's your take on this and what will you do about it? >> well, we have the people who are arriving by bus, people are continuing to arrive by airplane. they're being flown in by the biden administration. that's been going on for a lot longer than these buses have been coming in. now, if you're the governor of the state of new york, i want to know where are they coming from, who they are, where are they going. there isn't that call for action for tank transparency coming
8:09 am
from the governor directly. as the governor, call on the biden administration, pick up the phone and call him and tell him to secure the southern border. dealing with this today, it's going to get worse tomorrow if you don't finish construction of the border wall, catch and release, enforce the remain in mexico policy. support the custom and border patrol agents and stop incentivizing and rewarding illegal entry. it's not about people coming but things like fet feted fentanyl killing our kids. maria. it's not just safety but it's a economic issue. congressman, people are fleeing this state in droves and going to places like florida because of the crime issue. not to mention the economic issues, but that's going to be an economic issue you'll have to deal with should you become governor if budgets get hit because everybody is leaving. >> new york leads the entire nation in population loss because new yorkers are hitting their breaking point. they feel like their wallet and
8:10 am
safety are under attack and looking at these other states and realize their money will go further and they'll be safer. we need to confront that reality. if you're ignoring that and don't understand why new york leads the entire nation in population loss, you're not going to be able to fix it. maria: congressman, good to see you 6789 thank you very much. congressman lee zeldin, our prayers are with your family and constituents in new york dealing with this horror show. futures are down as third quarter earning season kicks off this week along with a big week of inflation data. our chief investment officer louie navaler is here next.
