o'connell has a lot to say about that. but first, this: to the new scandal swirling around california governor gavin newsom, newsom attended a swanky wine tasting event at his luxury winery in napa valley on saturday, june 7th, the day after rioters had already begun destroying downtown l.a., just the day before. this is newsom's new riots for thee but not for me. the promotional brochure for this event called it, quote, vineyard vibes and featured, quote, contemporary yet sophisticated wines, live jazz music and locally-made pizza and smash burgers saying it was a, quote, perfect kickoff to summer fun. joining us now, former presidential candidate larry elder. larry, should swanky fundraisers be newsom's priorities while rioters were lighting cars on fire, assaulting cops, throwing molotov cocktails and bricks? if was that, or quote, summer of

fun for terrorized residents of downtown l.a.? >> you know, liz, it isn't just that this is bad optics not unlike when gavin newsom issued all these districts on shutting down the state because of covid, heath at napa value -- he's at napa valley incurring a $12,000 wine tab, e wasn't wearing hamas ifing, he wasn't socially distanced. obviously, this man considers public safety and crime low priorities. he lives in a very safe neighborhood, doesn't have to worry about this. people in l.a. are very concerned about crime, and small business people downtown, the majority say they would move elsewhere if they only could. the shows you with where his priorities are. he'd rather do a podcast, have interviews and run around talking about what donald trump is doing wrong rather than do something about his state where he's losing population. the average price of a home twice that of the national average. homeless problem, a big gap between the rich and the poor. what's he doing about the things people in california care about?

elizabeth: you know, governor newsom did release a statement downplaying this saying the wine tasting vent was a fundraiser for cancer research, not a wine party, when the brochure for this wine tasting event at newsom's luxury winery in napa said, quote, we'll gather for music, food and delicious wine. larry, that sure sounds like a wine party. plus, newsom claimed that the riots were not, quote, widespread when he was at that event, but he's admitting there were riots and claiming they were not widespread, they were growing by the hour that day, saturday. they launched the day before, on friday, june 6th. >> i'm surprised, liz, he didn't say, well, the riots were fine, they were self-contained, there was no real violence as maxine waters says until donald trump bigfooted me and federalized the national guard. i'm surprised he didn't say that. [laughter] elizabeth: so when you heard about this napa wine tasting event, when you hear gavin newsom's response, you just pointed out, he ordered everybody to stay inside during the pandemic lockdowns while he

went to a dinner party at an upscale restaurant during the height of the pan deck. -- pandemic. there's also his disastrous handling of the california wild phis and now you've got president trump -- wild wildfires, and now trump just won in court that, yes, that san francisco 9th circuit said he can, trump, trump can keep national guard troops in l.a. to battle protests. what do you make of it when you put it all together in. >> well, it's going to hurt gavin newsom's prospects for becoming the democratic party nominee, and if he does, for winning. because the reason for the recall, the reason the recall happened was because of his arrogance in imposing all these mandates for covid and then completely ignoring them himself. and these were his priorities. as i said, he's doing a podcast while people in california, many of them say if they could leave, they would go elsewhere? high cost of living, highest taxes ever, highest estate tax of any state in the union, higher gas prices, even hawaii's

major court victory over gavin newsom. the san francisco-based 9th circuit court of appeals ruled president trump can keep the national guard deployed in l.a. against anti-i.c.e. protests. this is after gavin newsom sued in court president trump over this. let's welcome back to the show from house oversight and house judiciary congressman brandon gill. congressman, it's great to have you on. what was your reaction when you heard about this ruling in it means that control of the california national guard will stay in president trump's hands. the governor is not the commander in chief, the president is. >> well, thanks for having me on. that's exactly right. and i think this was a correct ruling. you know, whenever you take a step back and you realize that the biggest issue of the past election cycle was illegal immigration, border security and deportations. president trump is doing exactly what he said he was going to do. and the american people applaud him for that. and yet democrats are responding by taking to the streets and rioting and and looting and burning our cities to the ground

just like they did during the 2020 blm protests. you know, or gavin newsom doesn't want help as these looters are destroying his cities. and it shouldn't with -- be surprising that the party of defund the police does not want more law enforcement in their streets. i think it's disgusting, but i think this ruling was great, and i'm glad to see we have a president who is standing up for law and order in our cities. elizabeth: so, congressman, what dow -- do you make of the news that california governor gavin newsom was at a wine with tasting event at his luxury napa valley winery basically right when l.a. right -- riots were starting to ramp up? this ruling means president trump can deploy the national guard against any anti-i.c.e. riots in any city. this is happening. so the democrats have this scandal now with gavin newsom at a wine tasting event amid the l.a. riots ramp ratcheting up -- ratchets up, and it sounds like

the president can deploy the national guard because they're going to ramp up deportations and people are expecting we're going to see more riots and protests. >> you know, this is what you get whenever you have a governor who i think general winly does not -- genuinely does not care that law enforcement being attacked in his own city. instead of taking care of the riots and doing his job, he'd rather go to swanky wine fundraisers and to be hobnob -- hobnob with the elites. that's the problem right here. it's that the people like gavin newsom who run these states like california don't have to bear the consequences of their own policies. it's the working class, it's the people who have businesses in l.a. and other areas that are being destroyed by his policies. and yet he's actively fighting the president as he is trying to clean up gavin newsom's city. i think it's disgusting. but this is just another example of a party that has no leadership and no message and won't with even work with the

president as he's trying to make this country better. that's why democrats' polls are going down, and people are sick of seeing american cities that were once great and thriving turning into third world hell holes because of democrat governors. elizabeth: do you think that this scandal, this new scandal involving california governor gavin newsom where he was at, again, a wine tasting event at his own vineyard in napa valley while the l.a. riots were ratcheting up, he was on this wine taste thing event on june 7th. he's saying it was for cancer research, he's trying to say it was not a wine party when the brochure said it was about wine. and he also was saying that, basically, the l.a. riots were not widespread. he's admitting the riots were going onful do you think this hurts him in the race if he wants to try to run for the presidency in 2028? >> of course it does. you know, the american people want to live in a country that is safe. where they don't have to worry about rioters and looters and violent illegal aliens attacking

their cars as they're taking their kids to school in the morning. they want to live in an america where you don't have to worry about people burning down your business overnight if because they're upset about the president's deportation policies. that's the america that we are trying to create and get us back to. that's the america that gavin newsom is fighting. he seems, but judging by his own actions, that he's more worried about having fun for himself than he is in protecting his own people. that's a problem. i think the american people can see right through him. they can see how slimy this guy is, and they can see that he doesn't care about his own people, and i think that is going to to hurt him if he does decide to run for president. elizabeth: all right. man brandon gill, great to have you back on -- congressman. it's great to see you again. >> thanks for having me. elizabeth: now listen to this. >> we start drifting into something that is not consistent with american democracy.

2-week timetable? >> just time to see whether or not people come to their senses. elizabeth: that was president trump speaking to reporters today saying it is difficult to is ask israel to stop its airstrikes and that he has been speaking to iran. joinings now for reaction, u.s. army veteran and senior counselor to the president of the heritage foundation, retired lieutenant colonel james carafano. it's always great to have you on, colonel. the debate is this: can israel, the international community create the space for iranians on the street who despise iran's religious dictatorship to overthrow the mullahs, overthrow the ayatollahs, overthrow iran's religious tyrants? what do you think? do you think israel's going to try to effectuate that? >> well, i don't think -- they already have. so the question is, is there the regime chance. and by nature, authoritarian regimes don't even know how brittle they are. and the only way we'll actually know is if people go to the streets and if the army guys

don't shoot them. then we know it's the all over. it'll be game over. but until then the conditions are there, but it's really kind of is the momentum with the iranian people and is there enough fragility in the system that it will collapse if pushed. elizabeth: so do you see it coming? >> it could happen but it could also not happen. i would say my expectation is every day the regime survives has a chance to reconstitute its command and control and figures out how to middle through this, it's less likely. elizabeth: okay, let's move on to this, how serious is this threat? the fbi and law enforcement has stepped up surveillance of iranian sleeper cells inside the united states with -- also those linked to hezbollah. you know, we tracked nearly 2,000 illegal aliens crossing under biden with links to terrorism. that's according to cbp data. more than 3700 crossed since 2017. with links to terrorism. how serious is this? >> okay, good news/bad news.

yes, we have hamas, hezbollah, iran, russia, china, cuban agents running around the country. we know that. but that's the bad news. the good news is we have an fbi and dhs that are back on the case. they're not out surveilling parents at pta parties or trying to figure out how to indict donald trump. they're actually pretty good at this. that's the good news. the iranians don't have a very good track record at this in terms of actually operationalizing attacks, that's good news. these cells that are there, normally they're put in place for a purpose. and we know this is not a purpose. iran didn't see this coming. so trying to organize those cells and getting them to do something, that's, that's not as easy as it looks. and the final thing is, is if iran wants to assure at the united states will bring holy fire onto this and bring this government down, all they have to do is be linked to an attack on the u.s. homeland. elizabeth: okay. so you're not worried about

let's welcome back gop strategist ford o'connellful ford, what's to your reaction to this? this sounds like this has an edge to it. there's talk of marital discord. >> yeah, you're absolutely right. to say i'm a glad i didn't have a son because he'd grow up to be exactly like the man i married? that's bonkers. and then you also have the eldest daughter dropping her last name from a movie credit she just made. the whole thing doesn't add up. it seems to suggest there's tension between barack and michelle obama. elizabeth: is america pretty much done with the obamas in are they over? the it doesn't seem like they resonate much anymore, and the atlantic magazine just said recently that the democratic party's leader eless and barack obama is apathetic. >> i think the democratic party has moved on from barack obama, but i certainly think the american public has moved on given how poorly her podcast is doing and how poorly that

netflix special went, i think it was. so the ratings aren't very good. it's like, you know what? we need something new. elizabeth: it ranks, i think, 95th on apple or spotify. you know, let's get to this one, barack obama just stepped in it again. now he's again calling for government censorship sounding pretty totalitarian saying, quote, distinguishing between facts and opinion requires a government to step in. and in the same breath then he claims the u.s. is heading towards autocracy, ford. this is pretty rich. you can't make this stuff up. watch this. >> we want diversity of opinion. we don't want diversity of facts. [applause] and how do we train and teach our kids to distinguish with between those things? by the way, it will require some government, i believe, some government regulatory

2007. it got way too far left, and many people, main street america are saying where's the america we knew? where's the bipartisanship? where's the common sense that can bring people together? why is the far left so intolerant? why is it so chastising and scolding and not seeking to reach across the aisle to get policies done? trump is bringing it back to normal, resetting america to what it once was. >> it's true that the democracy has proven over 200 years when it gets pulled too far in either direction, it snaps back like that in the election process. we saw that happen, you know, whether you have trump derangement syndrome or you don't, you have to admit that it's self-corrected. and so, you know, to the extent tata people thought we were far -- that people thought we were far too left, and many did, wham, it corrected itself. that's why there's so much confidence in the u.s. economy. again, i look at it from, you know, as an investor.

when many are saying they should be doing the injunctions that pertain to their own district. the u.s. constitution does give a lot of power to the federal government and the president when it comes to border sec security. the constitution takes precedence over state laws. immigration and nationality act makes it clear that federal authorities have the right to arrest removable aliens it is clear the constitution says the states a and federal authorities in sanctuary city policies do not. >> i think that's right what you said could be a dictate out of a court decision think about another ways if the president can make the decision to trust in the national security and border security who makes the decisions trust you have complete anarchy and chaos. the two principal issues right now before the court, i can guarantee the supreme court is going to say the president has plenty of authority to determine when to call it the national
