1:00 pm
you." i am carol alt. here is the show we are always pressing the importance of cardiovascular health and keeping weight down. along with exercise one must eat a healthy along with exercise, one must eat a healthy diet to keep the pounds off. today we have joe the juicer who is here to show us how all our dietary needs can be found in a glass of juice. plus, helping your loved one look and feel beautiful. first, can anyone eat right over the holidays? is it impossible to be disciplined and still enjoy your meals? well, today we're going to try
1:01 pm
to help you stay happy but also to teach you the tricks on how to pass up the extra serving of turkey at christmas dinner or how you can pass up the piece of pie. author of "younger next week." lisa, thank you very much for being with us. what is it that happens at the holidays that causes people to go berserk? >> the holidays are such a temptation for all of us. stuffing, turkey, all these delicious foods. it's hard to resist when it's in your face. >> is it temptation or anxiety over the holidays? >> there's such anxiety. it's related to family dynamics and getting everyone together for the first time in a while. it can lead you to overindulge and seek comfort in food. >> they eat things they shouldn't eat or overeat.
1:02 pm
you have some ideas for us to help my audience to be healthy during the holidays. i don't want to tell them to abstain because it is the holidays. my mom makes the best turkey. okay. so i eat a little turkey at the holidays. what can we do? >> it's important to set yourself up for success as much as possible before you have a holiday dinner or weekend. make sure to put in your suitcase or your luggage beautiful clothing that looks good on you that you feel good in but that doesn't have a lot of wiggle room. fitted clothing that you feel great in. because if you wear the sweats and the loose-footing clothes you're going to eat and eat and eat and you won't get that tight filling to taper a little bit. >> you will eat to fill your clothes. >> exactly. so don't do that. >> that is a really bad one. okay. >> when you're surrounded by tempting places, you know you will have certain foods, like
1:03 pm
pies, cookies cakes. pick and choose what you want to spend your calories on. i don't want you to calorie count during the holidays. feel free to indulge but with moderation and thinking of portions and really focusing on the foods they love the most. if you deprive yourself and don't have what you really love, you're just going to pig out in the end. you're not going to be satisfied. it's important to feel satisfied. so pick and choose what you want to have. if you get to an event and you don't know what they're serving ahead of time, survey the situation before you take any bite or sip. decide again what is the most important thing to you. what do you want to try. i also recommend when you actually sit down for the meal or you're having passarounds and appetizers, go for the produce first, especially the vegetables. i think that's commonsensical. those vegetables, even starchy
1:04 pm
vegetables, brussels sprouts and carrots, load up on those first. it will load your stomach with finer and other beneficial nutrients and reduce the size of your stomach. if you fill up first you won't have as much room and you will probably if you take smaller portions of the high fat, high calorie items, you can enjoy them without going overboard. >> there's one pit fall. the dip. i see people that get the healthy veggie and dip it in some high calorie, full of fat, that dip. so what do you suggest? >> dip with caution. proceed with caution when you have these dips. you want to skinny dip with salsa. some hummus. that's complex carbohydrates. >> guacamole? >> i like to tell people to
1:05 pm
follow a two to three tablespoons. they are caloric. >> i dip once and drench it and tap it on all the others. >> exactly. >> what i find helpful is getting myself in the mood. if you don't figure out what you're eating and you just think you're going to go there and eat everything, you do go there and eat everything. if today i say i'm in the mood for turkey and baked potato, not much gravy today, and put it into a mind-set you get your body in the mood for it. so when you see it that's what you want. >> i think that's a great point. making the decision ahead of time what your plate is going to look like is a smart strategy. thinking again of half the plate
1:06 pm
being produce. in terms of dinner, that's going to be vegetables. >> right. >> even starchy vegetables. lean protein. and something with a little fat or oil, that's okay. but keep to a plate. not to two plates. if you're having mini plates like at a party or cocktail party, two small plates is appropriate. >> two other sneaky things, i use a lot of seasonings. >> oh, definitely. >> and i also bring a tea or drink that i like that i know is healthy for me to fill myself up before i sit down. >> and there's a lot of research that shows that drinking water. >> or tea or something. >> tea, water with a splash of lemon or fresh fruit slices, those are going to fill you up before a meal. do it before you even leave home. when you go and survey the situation, have that glass of water, seltzer.
1:07 pm
>> thank you so much for being with us. thank you for trying to keep healthy during the holiday. coming up, could something as simple as a glass of juice be the key to fighting america's unhealthy obesity problem? joe the juicer joins me after the break. [ coughs, sneezes ] i have a big meeting when we land, but i am so stuffed up, i can't rest. [ male announcer ] nyquil cold and flu liquid gels don't unstuff your nose. they don't? alka seltzer plus night fights your worst cold symptoms,
1:08 pm
plus has a decongestant. [ inhales deeply ] oh. what a relief it is. it's not the "fumbling around with rotating categories" card. it's not the etting blindsided by limits" card. it's the no-game-playing, no-earning-limit-having, deep-bomb-throwing, give-me-the-ball-and-i'll-take- it-to-the-house, cash back card. this is the quicksilver cash card from capital one. unlimited 1.5% cash back on every purchase, everywhere, every single day.
1:09 pm
so let me ask you... at's in your wallet? and our giant idaho potato truck is still missing. so my dog and i we're going to go find it. it's out there somewhere spreading the good word about idaho potatoes and raising money for meals on wheels. but we'd really like our truck back, so if you see it, let us know, would you? thanks. what?

you." i am not that millionaire guy that can go around giving a million dollars to everyone. i can give you something far more available, a way to try to stay healthy or to get healthy in this poe luted world. polluted world.
1:11 pm
we can even help restore your health and this segment is just that. as the title of the movie says "fat, sick and nearly dead" it gets you back to juicing. joe the juicer is here. joe, thank you for coming on the air for us. >> it is great to be here thanks for having me. >> you have had an uh -- amazing ride. it has been incredible what you have done. i want to take you back to anyone who hasn't seen the movie. you started out how? >> i was 320 pounds. >> i can't even imagine that. you are a handsome man. how did you get yourself up to 320 pounds? >> i did what the average person does. 80% of michael res were from processed -- my calories were coming from processed food and 7% was fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains and seeds, food made by mother nature. >> so baskly your smacks? >> yes, the pickles on the burgers and the lettuce burger or the vegetarian pizza
1:12 pm
with the pepperoni. i got to the age of 40 and i looked in the mirror and i really didn't recognize who was looking back. i look back and i have the heart of a 60-year-old. i had been on medication for a debilitating order since i was 32. i looked at myself and i said this isn't normal. this is not how i am supposed to live my life. >> carol, don't worry about it. you are aging. people are like, don't worry about it. it is aging. you need nyquil and it is just aging. >> this ah-ha moment came to me. in my 30s it was like, it is all right. it was hitting the big 4-0. i looked in the mirror and i got sick and tired of people asking me when the twins are due. i was on the pill three or four days, every morning, every night. i thought i have to fix this. the journey began and the journey was to be open to
1:13 pm
hearing what other people had to say and to listen to people and to do exploring about myself and my life and what was important. >> you admitted there was a problem. that's the issue. people look at themselves and they say it is what it is. i can't do anything about this. or i am not as disciplined as you. >> it has to come from within. for me it came from within. long story short, it took me six months to work out what to do. i put a plan into place and the plan was i need to go back to mother nature. we are the most successful species on this planet, carol, what have we been eating mostly during our time here? we have been eating plants. that's what we have eaten the most of. i said i am going back to plants. i decided to eat only fruits and vegetables for a two-year period. to super charge the beginning of my two-year journey i decided to juice only fruits and veggies for 60-days. when i told friends about this i said, joe, you have to put a camera on yourself.
1:14 pm
th is amazing. you are like an investment banker. you are the most least likely guy to do this. i came to america and i bought a truck. i bought a juicer. i loaded up the cart with fruits and veggies and i had a film crew and off i went. >> you lost all of that in 60-days? >> let me explain. >> there is hope for everybody then. >> let me explain. what i was open to was the fact that 70% of all disease is caused by lifestyle choices. so now i am sick. you have to think about this. if you are sick and on chronic pills and diseased and da, da, da. and you hear 70% of the people are causing it to themselves and therefore 30% is unlucky. it is just the way -- >> genetics. >> genetic pool you got from your mom and dad. i thought, wow, this is a chance to get off my pills. i have to go -- i have done the crime and now i need to do the time. the time was going back to all of this healthy food. at the time i thought it was going to be really hard. >> you thought it would be a prison sentence. >> i did think this would be like a prison sentence.
1:15 pm
really i was carrying all of this extra energy around and waiting for what i call a nutritional famine to come along. the idea of juicing was to super charge my body with all of these incredible fido knew nutrients, packets of sunlight that are only found in plant food. the journey of the juicing was what we captured mostly on film. it took another three months after the juicing journey to only eat fruits, nuts, beans and seeds and i didn't need to do two years. in actual fact in five months i reversed 20 years of disease. >> and lost how many pounds? >> well i went from 320 to the top and down to 220 and now i have settled in at a nice 235, 240 is where i balanced out at. >> it has been an incredible journey and it turned into a lot of other things. i heard you are expanding out. i wish you all of the luck in everything you do and i so appreciate you being here to talk to us. i have been trying to get on you this show for awhile. >> it is great, carol, great
1:16 pm
to be here. >> thank you. if you see my show you know the segment i do every month on farfetched claims done by products and infomercials. so i invite them on to convince me they are true. no need to convince me on this show. feeling and looking beautiful over the holidays. guys, don't touch that dial unless you want a very unhappy lady on christmas morning. [ male announcer ] it's simple physics... a body at rest tends to stay at rest... while a body in motion tends to stay in motion. staying active can actually ease arthritis symptoms. but if you have arthritis, staying active can be difficult. prescription celebrex can help relieve arthritis pain so your body can stay in motion. because just one 200mg celebrex a day can provide 24 hour relief for many with arthritis pain and inflammation.
1:17 pm
plus, in clinical studies, celebrex is proven to improve daily physical function so moving is easier. celebrex can be taken with or without food. and it's not a narcotic. you and your doctor should balance the benefits with the risks. all prescription nsaids, like celebrex, ibuprofen, naproxen and meloxicam have the same cardiovascular warning. they all may increase the chance of heart attack or stroke, which can lead to death. this chance increases if you have heart disease or risk factors such as high blood pressure or when nsaids are taken for long periods. nsaids, like celebrex, increase the chance of serious skin or allergic reactions or stomach and intestine problems, such as bleeding and ulcers, which can occur without warning and may cause death. patients also taking aspirin and the elderly are at increased risk for stomach bleeding and ulcers. don't take celebrex if you have bleeding in the stomach or intestine, or had an asthma attack, hives, other allergies to aspirin, nsaids or sulfonamides. get help right away if you have swelling of the face or throat, or trouble breathing. tell your doctor your medical history. and find an arthritis treatment for you. visit celebrex.com and ask your doctor about celebrex.

you." no need to con vens me this -- convince me this week. i am turning into carol claus
1:20 pm
and will have ideas that can help your loved ones feel beautiful. we have the women from sweet rolls. good morning, ladies. >> good morning. >> i have to tell you that i found this product on-line before i ever knew you, laura. i think it is a great product. what caught me is it is organic and healthy for the hair. tell us about the product and how you came up with it. >> carol, every woman is busy. i know you are and i am and everybody. well, you know, we want our hair done fast and we want it to be healthy also. so i came up with this idea and through a stiff neck, believe it or not, a stiff neck throw the rice in a sock and in the microwave and it will stay hot. i noticed that when i took it off a piece of hair that was hanging down was nice and smooth and it had like a little waive to it. i started thinking and maybe there is something here. i came up with another ingredient that, woulds way
1:21 pm
better and it is healthy for your hair. it never ever loses steam. >> what is that ingredient? >> it is from the casava plant. >> can i have one? just to touch it? when you feel it it is crunchy. it makes a sound. i throw these in the microwave for 30 seconds and you roll it in your hair and you leave it for 10 minutes. >> right. it depends on the length and thickness of the hair. i leave mine in for 15 minutes and mary kay leaves hers in for five or 10. >> i also came up with another secret you need to put on your instructions. put your hair in a ponytail and curl it. i have a lot of hair. it is very, very long. it was very difficult to do it with just turning my head over. i put my hair in a ponytail and it was way easier. they are great. how long do they last? >> forever. they never lose steam. it doesn't matter how old they are. they never lose steam. >> i notice in the center
1:22 pm
where i rolled it over and over it did get crushed together. but you mush it back together? >> you work it back to shape. if they stretch a little bit you can tie a little not on the end there -- a knot on the end there and make them a little more compact, but some women like them a little loose. >> they come in different sizes and you have the pink for breast cancer awareness. >> we did that this year, yes. >> this is mary kay's hair before. >> beautiful hair. she has a lot of it. extremely curly. >> this hair is difficult, the stubborn hair. >> it is very curly. >> let's see what it did. >> this is what it looks like. >> you unclip it and untie it and unroll it. and there you go. >> beautiful. beautiful, bouncy and nice and smooth compared to her original hair there. >> it has a nice curve and a nice waive. >> i actually do wear it up and in i am in a big hurry i
1:23 pm
leave and drive and get to my destination and i take it out and shake it out basically. >> and it is healthy and organic and great for your hair. a great gift for christmas. >> thank you for being here. >> and now i want to talk about an infrared dryer. hi, steven. >> hi. how are? >> great. i found this infrared dryor on-line and -- dryer on-line and called for one to come over. i do the inflay sh -- infrared sauna. tell us about the dryer. >> it is amazing. it dries from the inside out and cuts down on frizz and it is great and light weight. all you have to do is put on a little red button and it is about half the time of a regular dryer. that's always great. >> drying out your hair, so many women have hair that breaks and that is falling out. this i hear doesn't damage the root. >> it doesn't damage the root at all. >> why is that?
1:24 pm
>> it dries with the light and not the heavy x heavy, heavy steam and the heavy dryer. >> even though it doesn't get hot it doesn't get as hot as the regular dryer. >> it is an oxymoron. >> it is great for your hair, the specially treated hair. >> can you start it up so we can see? when it is on cool there is no light. >> there is no light. >> now let's hit the light. >> and then there it goes. >> that's the infrared. >> and you can feel it. you can feel it drying. >> it is not even that hot, but it dries from the inside out. it is a great product. >> and of course you have -- >> you can put the nozzle on. >> i put these on a couple shoots i did because i want to hair every hairdresser tell me what they thought. >> everybody loves it. it is an excellent idea. >> thank you for coming. >> thank you for having me. bye.
1:25 pm
>> also, if you wanted all healthy, natural shampoo, this is the shampoo that i found that i really, really like. this is called young forever and this is a ph balancing shampoo that is chemical free and all natural. of course you need a really, really great conditioner. i find my hair is really long and conditioning it really, really well keeps it from breaking. i know everybody forgets to condition or you think you can get away with it by shampooing your hair and then not conditioning it afterwards. most break kenneling happens because you don't condition your hair and you are curling it and blow drying it and washing with chemical shampoos. if you are having an issue with hormones and losing your hair be kinder to your scalp. use something all natural that is chemical free and good for your hair. coming up, i review one of my deepest beauty secrets in today's ask carol. all we do is go out to dinner.
1:26 pm
