you." i am carol alt. here is the show we are always pressing the importance of cardiovascular health and keeping weight down. along with exercise one must eat a healthy along with exercise, one must eat a healthy diet to keep the pounds off. today we have joe the juicer who is here to show us how all our dietary needs can be found in a glass of juice. plus, helping your loved one look and feel beautiful. first, can anyone eat right over the holidays? is it impossible to be disciplined and still enjoy your meals? well, today we're going to try

to help you stay happy but also to teach you the tricks on how to pass up the extra serving of turkey at christmas dinner or how you can pass up the piece of pie. author of "younger next week." lisa, thank you very much for being with us. what is it that happens at the holidays that causes people to go berserk? >> the holidays are such a temptation for all of us. stuffing, turkey, all these delicious foods. it's hard to resist when it's in your face. >> is it temptation or anxiety over the holidays? >> there's such anxiety. it's related to family dynamics and getting everyone together for the first time in a while. it can lead you to overindulge and seek comfort in food. >> they eat things they shouldn't eat or overeat.

you have some ideas for us to help my audience to be healthy during the holidays. i don't want to tell them to abstain because it is the holidays. my mom makes the best turkey. okay. so i eat a little turkey at the holidays. what can we do? >> it's important to set yourself up for success as much as possible before you have a holiday dinner or weekend. make sure to put in your suitcase or your luggage beautiful clothing that looks good on you that you feel good in but that doesn't have a lot of wiggle room. fitted clothing that you feel great in. because if you wear the sweats and the loose-footing clothes you're going to eat and eat and eat and you won't get that tight filling to taper a little bit. >> you will eat to fill your clothes. >> exactly. so don't do that. >> that is a really bad one. okay. >> when you're surrounded by tempting places, you know you will have certain foods, like

pies, cookies cakes. pick and choose what you want to spend your calories on. i don't want you to calorie count during the holidays. feel free to indulge but with moderation and thinking of portions and really focusing on the foods they love the most. if you deprive yourself and don't have what you really love, you're just going to pig out in the end. you're not going to be satisfied. it's important to feel satisfied. so pick and choose what you want to have. if you get to an event and you don't know what they're serving ahead of time, survey the situation before you take any bite or sip. decide again what is the most important thing to you. what do you want to try. i also recommend when you actually sit down for the meal or you're having passarounds and appetizers, go for the produce first, especially the vegetables. i think that's commonsensical. those vegetables, even starchy

vegetables, brussels sprouts and carrots, load up on those first. it will load your stomach with finer and other beneficial nutrients and reduce the size of your stomach. if you fill up first you won't have as much room and you will probably if you take smaller portions of the high fat, high calorie items, you can enjoy them without going overboard. >> there's one pit fall. the dip. i see people that get the healthy veggie and dip it in some high calorie, full of fat, that dip. so what do you suggest? >> dip with caution. proceed with caution when you have these dips. you want to skinny dip with salsa. some hummus. that's complex carbohydrates. >> guacamole? >> i like to tell people to

follow a two to three tablespoons. they are caloric. >> i dip once and drench it and tap it on all the others. >> exactly. >> what i find helpful is getting myself in the mood. if you don't figure out what you're eating and you just think you're going to go there and eat everything, you do go there and eat everything. if today i say i'm in the mood for turkey and baked potato, not much gravy today, and put it into a mind-set you get your body in the mood for it. so when you see it that's what you want. >> i think that's a great point. making the decision ahead of time what your plate is going to look like is a smart strategy. thinking again of half the plate

being produce. in terms of dinner, that's going to be vegetables. >> right. >> even starchy vegetables. lean protein. and something with a little fat or oil, that's okay. but keep to a plate. not to two plates. if you're having mini plates like at a party or cocktail party, two small plates is appropriate. >> two other sneaky things, i use a lot of seasonings. >> oh, definitely. >> and i also bring a tea or drink that i like that i know is healthy for me to fill myself up before i sit down. >> and there's a lot of research that shows that drinking water. >> or tea or something. >> tea, water with a splash of lemon or fresh fruit slices, those are going to fill you up before a meal. do it before you even leave home. when you go and survey the situation, have that glass of water, seltzer.

we can even help restore your health and this segment is just that. as the title of the movie says "fat, sick and nearly dead" it gets you back to juicing. joe the juicer is here. joe, thank you for coming on the air for us. >> it is great to be here thanks for having me. >> you have had an uh -- amazing ride. it has been incredible what you have done. i want to take you back to anyone who hasn't seen the movie. you started out how? >> i was 320 pounds. >> i can't even imagine that. you are a handsome man. how did you get yourself up to 320 pounds? >> i did what the average person does. 80% of michael res were from processed -- my calories were coming from processed food and 7% was fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains and seeds, food made by mother nature. >> so baskly your smacks? >> yes, the pickles on the burgers and the lettuce burger or the vegetarian pizza

with the pepperoni. i got to the age of 40 and i looked in the mirror and i really didn't recognize who was looking back. i look back and i have the heart of a 60-year-old. i had been on medication for a debilitating order since i was 32. i looked at myself and i said this isn't normal. this is not how i am supposed to live my life. >> carol, don't worry about it. you are aging. people are like, don't worry about it. it is aging. you need nyquil and it is just aging. >> this ah-ha moment came to me. in my 30s it was like, it is all right. it was hitting the big 4-0. i looked in the mirror and i got sick and tired of people asking me when the twins are due. i was on the pill three or four days, every morning, every night. i thought i have to fix this. the journey began and the journey was to be open to

hearing what other people had to say and to listen to people and to do exploring about myself and my life and what was important. >> you admitted there was a problem. that's the issue. people look at themselves and they say it is what it is. i can't do anything about this. or i am not as disciplined as you. >> it has to come from within. for me it came from within. long story short, it took me six months to work out what to do. i put a plan into place and the plan was i need to go back to mother nature. we are the most successful species on this planet, carol, what have we been eating mostly during our time here? we have been eating plants. that's what we have eaten the most of. i said i am going back to plants. i decided to eat only fruits and vegetables for a two-year period. to super charge the beginning of my two-year journey i decided to juice only fruits and veggies for 60-days. when i told friends about this i said, joe, you have to put a camera on yourself.

th is amazing. you are like an investment banker. you are the most least likely guy to do this. i came to america and i bought a truck. i bought a juicer. i loaded up the cart with fruits and veggies and i had a film crew and off i went. >> you lost all of that in 60-days? >> let me explain. >> there is hope for everybody then. >> let me explain. what i was open to was the fact that 70% of all disease is caused by lifestyle choices. so now i am sick. you have to think about this. if you are sick and on chronic pills and diseased and da, da, da. and you hear 70% of the people are causing it to themselves and therefore 30% is unlucky. it is just the way -- >> genetics. >> genetic pool you got from your mom and dad. i thought, wow, this is a chance to get off my pills. i have to go -- i have done the crime and now i need to do the time. the time was going back to all of this healthy food. at the time i thought it was going to be really hard. >> you thought it would be a prison sentence. >> i did think this would be like a prison sentence.

really i was carrying all of this extra energy around and waiting for what i call a nutritional famine to come along. the idea of juicing was to super charge my body with all of these incredible fido knew nutrients, packets of sunlight that are only found in plant food. the journey of the juicing was what we captured mostly on film. it took another three months after the juicing journey to only eat fruits, nuts, beans and seeds and i didn't need to do two years. in actual fact in five months i reversed 20 years of disease. >> and lost how many pounds? >> well i went from 320 to the top and down to 220 and now i have settled in at a nice 235, 240 is where i balanced out at. >> it has been an incredible journey and it turned into a lot of other things. i heard you are expanding out. i wish you all of the luck in everything you do and i so appreciate you being here to talk to us. i have been trying to get on you this show for awhile. >> it is great, carol, great

where i rolled it over and over it did get crushed together. but you mush it back together? >> you work it back to shape. if they stretch a little bit you can tie a little not on the end there -- a knot on the end there and make them a little more compact, but some women like them a little loose. >> they come in different sizes and you have the pink for breast cancer awareness. >> we did that this year, yes. >> this is mary kay's hair before. >> beautiful hair. she has a lot of it. extremely curly. >> this hair is difficult, the stubborn hair. >> it is very curly. >> let's see what it did. >> this is what it looks like. >> you unclip it and untie it and unroll it. and there you go. >> beautiful. beautiful, bouncy and nice and smooth compared to her original hair there. >> it has a nice curve and a nice waive. >> i actually do wear it up and in i am in a big hurry i
