members relationships with elected officials. but i have not seen anything involving some sort of political manifesto that would clearly identify what motivated him. obviously, his primary motive was to go out and murder people. they were all elected officials and all democrats. beyond that, i think it is way too speculative for anyone that has reviewed the materials to no end to say what was motivating him in terms of ideology or specific issues. >> wear their are abortion-rights supporters? abortion rights supporters on the list and dozens and dozens of names with hundreds of pages of documents recovered with his writings on them. >> reporter: you give more details? >> i will not comment on that at this time. >> reporter: the utep about how long the planning and surveillance went on? >> here is where i got extensive period of time and it is clear the writings appear to have been

this out. we will not comment on all of it since it is part of the an active investigation and we will figure out what it means in relation to all of this. >> reporter: [inaudible] where is he being held? >> there will be an initial appearance in st. paul, minnesota, 1:30 p.m. this afternoon. i do not anticipate appearance in state court today. >> reporter: one more question on the hit list, 45 names and will be seen more than that? was there more than 45? >> there is lots of names. >> there is a lot of names and we are working together right now. the fbi and we have mentioned there are other names out of state. they have been working through our fusion center network through the united states and partners with the fbi helping to coordinate with that in that process. the question is a good one. a part of what we are looking to is the names and numbers you are referencing. there were names and multiple
9:37 am
notebooks and they were redundant in. i don't have a total number of people that were in there because some overlapping on multiple lists. again, i want to continue to clarify, this is not a list of people that numerical order and some ranking. these are names developed as we look across multiple writings in terms of fat just to be clear. [inaudible] pete though he is and the cost custody united states marshals service at st. paul courthouse. beyond that, i will refer to the marshals assuming he's in custody and pending trial. >> reporter: [inaudible] >> it will be initial appearance because only charged with complaint and not yet indicted. he will have an initial appearance as all defendants do before a federal judge where he will be asked to identify himself here the court will appoint a lawyer to represent him or he can retain a lawyer to
9:38 am
represent him. the court will ask whether or not to seek his detention pending trial, which we obviously will hear the court set a detention hearing and preliminary hearing to charge him by complaint. how much of that will happen today is unclear, we will see at 1:30. putter and the federal building? >> correct. >> yesterday the way things played out coming up to 5:30 or so press conference, did you know he was close to being caught at that point where was it a surprise by the trail cam information and what you saw in the field? >> we as noted, we still have belief assistant county. we did not know the information specific based on the overall investigation that the specific information that led to his arrest at that time we were not tracking yet. i assume that is related to the

timeline these teams and the law enforcement teams active very quickly when they had specifically that led us know he was in the area. it was relatively short period of time when they were able to do that. >> reporter: [inaudible] where did this rank in terms of across the united states and what you have addressed with some of the reaction? >> look, this was a political assassination, which is not a word we use often in the united states let alone in minnesota. it is a chilling attack on our democracy, on our way of life. it is only a most recent example of violent political extremism in this country. that is a trend increasing in recent years. it is unfortunate. i hope a wake-up call to everyone that people can disagree with you without being

9:41 am
politicians at this time? or is this a space any threat? >> okay, what we are going to do is, of course, take these threats as serious as possible and throw all of the available resources towards these threats. we are in lockstep with the capitol police on a regular basis, and we continue to have those conversations about threats towards politicians. thank you for that question. >> may be one more question before we wrap up. >> reporter: i just want to wrap it back to just help capitalized that acted collectively stopping at hortmans' house. >> great question for everybody in the room, the question is the part that police officer stopped at with the hortmans house. it is incredibly important and that started with a sergeant actually off-duty walking out of the building and had heard there
9:42 am
was a shooting in another community at senator hoffman's house. being alert, it seemed two officers and the police department, hay, drive by dried by melissa hortman's house and check on them. and that is essentially where they pulled up and found the car and essentially the criminal act was occurring as they pulled up. had they not foiled the plan, essentially took his vehicle away from him, which involved all of his maps and all of his names and all of his weaponry, i would be very scared what it would look like over the next few hours had we not done that. >> reporter: just to clarify,. him in a vehicle, did she realize and report that?
