big bay area gun show-- may finally have the weapon they need: the last thing that i'm looking to do is to have something that's going to attract negativity, violence, and crime. >> local leaders looking to stop a big bay area gun show may finally have the weapon they need. the governor's pen. >> you get used to it? >> no. oh -- absolutely not. >> crime is skyrocketing in one bay area city. but it may have more to do with who's not out on the streets. party goers they like to have their fun. >> there's probably going to be some wildness going on. >> a big party in oakland tonight. but anything like last time not everyone will be celebrating. good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. kpix 5's brian webb is live outside oracle arena where thousands are gathered to rave the night away. brian? >> reporter: ann, the last time a rave party was held here at oracle arena it was out in the

parking lot. there were 1500 noise complaints some from seven miles away. tonight the party is indoors packed with 20 somethings here to dance the night away. blinding lights and blaring music. think of it as a giant dance party meets cirque du soleil. >> we're expecting to party to pick up immediately. >> good vibes, connection with everyone. >> reporter: the show was called the ocean of light. the dress code is all white. no exceptions. party goers here from across california paying close to $200 a ticket to hear music by artists you've probably never heard of if you're over 35. >> betty legrand. >> betty legrand and -- who's the other deejay? >> reporter: similar rave parties have had serious problems in the recent past. from noise complaints last year in oakland, to overdose deaths last year in san francisco and this year in new york city. >> party goers they like to have their fun. >> there's probably going to be

some wildness going on. >> reporter: but for the fans drinking drugs and high dollar tickets are a small price to pay for the promise of a night they'll never forget. >> it's an ocean of white and everyone wears white. everyone just -- it's connected in that way. >> reporter: they were expecting a few thousand people out here. so far we can't hear the music from inside. we haven't seen any police cars or ambulances rush up but the night is still young. this party goes on until 2:30 a.m.. live in oakland, brian webb. kpix 5. and the city of berkeley is dealing with a spike in crime. kpix 5's pat sick receive doe owe has more -- patrick sedillo has more. >> we see car chases and abandoned stolen cars. >> reporter: doris has lived in berkeley for nearly 30 years and says that random crime is just getting worse. >> we had a car rolling down the street with the -- the driver jumping out. the car rolling into somebody's

house. there was a mugging across the street. we didn't really see that so much as we heard one of the victims yelling and screaming. >> reporter: according to a mid yore report from berkeley police, robberies are up 25% this year and burglaries are up 34%. due mostly to having fewer police on the street forcing neighbors to circle the wagon. >> our truck was stolen last year. >> all the truck -- saw the truck come around the corner at a high rate of speed and realize ld something -- realized something was up. stephen lives across the street and says neighbors keep in close contact. >> especially around the campus area, people getting their ipads and ipods and songs and computers stolen. >> reporter: they keep a watch and wait with senses heightened. waiting for the next shoe to drop. hoping to see more police on the streets of berkeley. do you get used to it? >> no. oh absolutely not. >> reporter: police chief will present the findings of the report to the city council on tuesday. the public is welcome to

attend. reporting from berkeley, patrick sedillo, kpix 5. the police union that represents these officers wants to get 176 officers on the streets. there are currently fewer than 170. a man faces four years and eight months in prison for a car accident that killed one pedestrian and injured another on a sidewalk in walnut creek. jose cabreze was sentenced yesterday after pleading guilty to gross vehicle already manslaughter while intoxicated. -- vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. the other was hospitalized for a month and continues to deal with her injuries. menlo park police will soon be recording their every move. 40 cameras are being prepped to accompany officers while they're on patrol. the video cameras clipped to the front of the officer's uniform and they'll be used to document police officers' contact with people. the recordings will be downloaded and saved in a police data base for at least two and a half years.

well, hundreds came out to the cow palace today for the crossroads the west gun show. it's been going on for nearly three decades but anne makovec tells us that a bill could threaten the future. >> reporter: five weekends a year the cow palace in daly city turns into a gun and ammo marketplace. >> brings things together in one environment which is easy to supervise from a law enforcement point of view. >> reporter: the crossroads of the west shows have been going on here for 28 years. >> it's been going on for decades. >> yes and so is my crime and my violence and it's been going on for decades. >> reporter: san francisco supervisor is one of many politicians who want to see the gun shows end. but because the cow palace is a state run facility, the counties it straddles san mateo and san francisco have no say in it. >> what do we do to have quality events? >> reporter: but the gun show's owner calls their cries against his show poor public policy. >> you know, deny access to a

public building and state owned building to people who are california taxpayers who really own the building. >> reporter: people like danny. >> if you want to target shoot and go to competitions and you're shooting a lot of ammo you almost have to go to one of these gun shows in order to get affordable ammo. >> reporter: but a bill now sitting on the governor's desk could let local politicians deny access to events they don't like. the last thing that i'm looking to do is to have something that's going to attract negativity, violence, and crime. >> and that's exactly what the gun show attracts. >> it's really no evidence that anything illegal has ever gone on here. >> reporter: with high crime neighborhoods on all sides of the palace, local politicians want the power to cut the availability of guns. >> it's historic because it's taken a long time to -- to move this forward. >> reporter: similar bills have passed in the legislature in the past most recently in 2009. but governor schwarzenegger vetoed that one. this time under governor brown it might become law. >> he'll make the right decision.

the right decision is to give local control. >> it really hurt me. >> reporter: the governor has until october 13th to decide. in daly city, anne makovec, eyewitness news. >> it would ban hunting with lead bullets because fragments can be harmful to the environment from the bullets. the u.s. and russia have seized on a chance to avoid military intervention in syria. after two and a half days of talks in geneva. secretary of state john kerry and his russian counterpart announced a proposal to get rid of syria's chemical weapons arsenal. >> the united states and russia are committed to the elimination of syrian chemical weapons in the soonest and safest manner. we agreed that syria must submit within a week. >> under the deal, syria must hand over a list of its chemical sites and stockpiles almost immediately and it must allow international inspections by november and destroy all

weapons, material and equipment by the first half of 2014. if the country fails to comply, the u. n. could step in and authorize sanctions. suzuki is recalling nearly 200,000 vehicles that may have faulty air bag sensors. the recall involves 2006 to 2011 grand vitara suvs and 2007 to 2011 sx 4 cars. the suzuki says the weight sensor mat in the front passenger seat can wear out over time. dealers will fix them for free of charge. or -- you could just win powerball. and buy a new car. or perhaps maybe the entire dealership. tonight's winning numbers are worth $317 million. here they are -- the new bay bridge is a no word yet on whether anybody won. well, the new bay bridge is a winner tonight. the feature that just landed the brand new span in the

more than a foot of rain has fallen in parts of colorado this weekend. tonight, there's still no end in sight. the historic flooding around the state still has many people trapped. adriana diaz reports from boulder where national guards are working around the clock to rescue victims. >> reporter: for many in northern colorado the only way out of their flooded communities is on helicopters. the national guard has rescued more than 1700 people reuniting

them with worried family members. >> so happy right now to be here. >> reporter: a hell cometter air lift -- helicopters airlifted dozens of fifth graders to safety after flood waters surrounded their camp in the mountains near jamestown. >> it was a little bit scary at times. the water was pouring down. and we -- it was still really fun. >> reporter: the historic flooding washed out roads, complicating rescues. in loveland, a local fire team had to mull this man to -- pull this man to safety. the lyons convoys of trucks drove families to drier land. the national guard says rescue efforts can last into the night. >> people are signaling helicopters with pin lights on the end of your key chain. night vision goggles can see that. >> reporter: stephen smith returned to his boulder home the assess the damage. >> this was the bedroom. >> yeah this was our guest room. so -- yeah i don't think anyone wants the stay here now. this is just surreal. >> reporter: smith and his roommates were home when water rushed through the house

thursday night. >> i saw you know, a wall of water about this big with branches and sticks kind of coming at me. >> reporter: hail and rain continue to fall throughout colorado. authorities say search more inches -- several more inches forecast for sunday could add to problems in areas still underwater. adriana diaz, cbs news, boulder, colorado. >> it will flooding covers an area about the size of connecticut. at least four people have died and more than 170 others are unaccounted for. the giants had an away game today but at&t park employees were hard at work anyway. and it is all for the fans. >> attention, attention. >> may i have your attention please. >> they held a disaster drill this morning at the ballpark practicing for a potential large scale emergency. police, stadium security, and ballpark vendors also participated. >> we're doing an internal testing today. so what you're seeing here are all of our day of game staff. all of the people about 800 to 1,000 that it would take to put

on a game. >> team officials tell us they'll use this drill to evaluate their evacuation procedures and communications. it was a shortened day for the america's cup yacht races on the san francisco bay. the emirates team new zealand boat nearly capsized. that allowed defending champion oracle team usa a much-needed win. today's second scheduled race was postponed because of excessive winds. new zealand still leads the series and needs just three more wins to take the cup. the next races are scheduled for tomorrow. well, the new bay bridge has only been open for a couple of weeks but it's already earned its place in history at least for now. the book of world records just named the new eastern span the widest bridge in the world. it measures nearly 260 feet across and that figure includes the ten lanes of roadway that gap between the two decks. and the bike path. and it may break records in traffic as well.

>> yes. that's the slowest commute from thest bay all the way -- east bay all the way into the city of san francisco. >> it is packed. >> it took me two hours to get to work last week. but i learned to get to the left side and to the right side and now that you told everybody guess what? [ laughter ] >> you know over the bay bridge tonight, we have a lovely view of the moon still. >> oh good. >> in fact we're going to go ahead and head on outside and actually take a view of america's cup. the platform there. >> yeah. >> isn't it -- i mean if you look very carefully you can see the flaks on the flag -- boy it's brisk out there. it is currently 58 degrees? san francisco. but -- in san francisco. but the winds are out of the west at 13 and 15 and gusts up to 20. as a chill in the air feels like autumn has arrived even though this is the last official weekend of summer. we're currently in the 50s and 60s across the board. today's highs were cooler than yesterday. low 60s beaches. 70s pretty common around the central bay and low 70s around the peninsula. mid 70s in livermore and that's a good 12 degrees below average. santa rosa 80 degrees and one

of the amest locations. we'll all tumble into the 50s and few low 60s. we'll notice the return of the low clouds and patchy fog and even localized drizzle because this is a pretty intense deck of stratus. wake up in the clouds tomorrow and end up with afternoon sunshine pretty much where people -- from what we experienced today and the extended forecast call for a warmup and we'll get to that. but first it's futurecast. and you notice the deck of clouds that just whip across the bay well inland at least a good 60 miles. wrapping around the santa cruz beaches as well. invernesses totally stockton. throw in a couple of degrees warmer temps as a result. this is the area of low pressure look at how beautiful that is as it tightly coils up over the western pacific. what it's doing is really enhancing our marine layer. but 2400 feet deep and so that would -- is what has been contributing to our below average temperatures for this

time of year. how will this affect the game tomorrow? it really won't. we'll peel back the cloud cover and we'll have sunshine in the low 70s. for kickoff at 1:25. tomorrow's high 60s beaches, 70s pretty common across the peninsula up to 84 degrees for one of the amest locations, that will be in morgan hill as well as in gilroy. and then we spin you around to the eastern portion of the bay area. well inland. into the mid 80s. the closer you get to the bay of water that's when we see the temperatures drop into the 60s and 70s and then you throw in that robust sea breeze out of the west. 10 to 20 miles an hour. 78 degrees in the valley. the extended forecast there you have it. each and every day. some gradual warming on monday and tuesday. but it's really wednesday and thursday that will pan out to be the warmest of the last full week of summer and then we have the area of low pressure that promises to bring us a chance of rain showers by late thursday into friday and saturday. but that is primarily to the north of the golden gate bridge and that's something we'll have

this is the 18th annual san francisco international dragon boat race off treasure island. the accompanying festival has food and activities for kids. the event continues tomorrow from 8:00 in the morning until 5:00 in the afternoon. well, it has been nearly two years since the cruise ship ran aground off the coast of italy. and it's still there. on monday, crews will begin first of its kind salvage effort to hoist the costa concordia back upright. and they better get it right because charlie d'agata tells uses there no plan b.. -- us there is no plan b. >> reporter: it will take a team of 500 people from 24 nations to right the wreck of the costa concordia. and a bit of help from mother nature that the seas stay quiet. the liner has been laying on its side off the italian coast since it ran aground 20 months ago. the method to roll it upright is known in nautical terms as par buckling but this project is unpriest dented in terms of

-- unprecedents in terms of scale and cost. after building a platform beneath the hull, cranes will slowly pull her backup right at a rate of three yards an hour. then air pumped into massive containers will help refloat and stabilize the ship. >> we start this off the bay -- about eight to ten hours later going to put it down on the platforms. >> reporter: if all goes to plan and she doesn't break apart in the process, she'll be towed away and broken up for scrap. the cruise ship had more than 4,000 passengers on board when it ran into a reef that sliced a the 230-foot gash into the side of its hull. two americans were among 30 people killed. two more passengers are still missing. their bodies may be on board somewhere. the operation to salvage the ship two and a half times the size of the titanic is already the most expensive in maritime
