with a classic turkey meal... the department of defense says this year it shipped out about 52 thousand pounds of turkey to bases around the world. it can take up to three months for the supplies to arrive at some remote locations. the defense logistics agency says along with the turkey...it shipped out over 25- thousand pounds of beef, 17-thousand pounds of ham, 7- hundred gallons of eggnog and over 3- thousand pounds of marshmallows. jessica rae: despite the cold and wet weather, hundreds of des runners thanksgiving festivities turkey trot in downtown des runners then ran through the east village near the capitol and back. most runners said they were out in the cold so they could start the holiday on the right foot. free t-shirt and turkey trot- themed hat, as well as a free all you can eat pancake breakfast to start the thanksgiving festivities. jessica rae: a one time catching on celebrating its mr. thanksgiving brings thousands sarah greene explains. thousands of people were at the south park mall night....but they weren't all there to shop.... many spent the evening eating turkey and celebrating the holiday with bob vogelbaugh, also known as mr. thanksgiving. now, what once was a small gathering 45 years ago has turned into quad cities tradition for thousands. (bob voglebaugh) "it was going to be one time only" (nat) nothing says thanksgiving more than lots of food and good company... it took 27-hundred pounds of turkey and more than 300 hundred volunteers to feed the thousands of people that attended. spirit now that thanksgiving is over, you can take your family to downtown sioux city for the festival of trees. you can view and bid on over 70 decorated trees and wreaths in the ho-chunk centre atrium. then, on december 3rd, the live auction will start with the highest silent bid. proceeds this year will go to the siouxland autism support group. and speaking of christmas trees... they again fill the south dakota state capitol in pierre. the 20-15 grand lighting ceremony kicks off the holiday season at the capitol. the capitol christmas display includes nearly 100 trees that are decorated by volunteers from communities, schools, churches, nonprofit organizations and state government offices. this year's theme is "christmas around the world." the largest tree in the capitol is a 29-foot colorado blue spruce that had to be trimmed just to fit inthe capitol. monday. breezy tuesday. jessica rae scott: jessica rae: yesterday a local restaurant opened its doors to feed the less fortunate during their time of need on thanksgiving day. abc9 news reporter bria bell brings us more... "we have eaten some of the best food in a warm environment catered by people who care about other people," said dulfek rebos opened their doors yesterday for thanksgiving and served a multitude of people in the siouxland area, many of which have witnessed hard times. volunteers waited and served the large number of people to make them feel welcomed and at home. donations from weeks prior not only went to food, but to provide attendees with hats, gloves, and toiletry bags. there was lots of conversation and laughter. countless number of people expressed their attitude for graditude. "it is a breath of fresh air, you know...that we can sit with multiple races and have a meal with no one

actually being mean to one another. i think that it's a blessing all together," said "i absolutely love this and i actually don't want to leave right now cause i can stay here and get another plate of food right now, which i've already done and i've just been having way too much fun," said dulfek. the thank yous came left and right to the volunteers and owner heather rees, she says the outpouring appreciation moved her and the total outcome was exactly what she anticipated. "i knew that it would be an emotional day, but just walking around and talking to the families and seeing the kids...it's just really emotional," said rees. bria: the event was a great turnout and the idea to give back trickled down all the way to heather's children as they walked outside in the snow to deliver food to a woman who was waiting in the cold for a nearby shelter to open. in sioux city, bria bell abc 9 news jessica rae: while rebos was offering up it's first thanksgiving meal.... sioux city's gospel mission was adding another meal to it's long standing thanksgiving tradition. dozens of folks showed up to take advantage of a thanksgiving dinner served by volunteers..

volunteers spent their thanksgiving morning... preparing meals for families in need here in siouxland and across iowa. but now, one former homeless man in des moines has made it back on his feet, and is giving to those who have the greatest needs. reporter jacob peklo brings us more terry gable remembers hitting rock bottom. terry gable, intake coordinator: "while sitting in eight days of jail, i decided i'd had enough of that old life, and wanted something new." after battling an addiction to drugs and alcohol, he joined the program at hope ministries, designed to help people get their lives back on track. terry gable, intake coordinator: "after turning my life over, it completely changed. it transformed my whole life for me and my family." now, six years after first volunteering to work here, he's got a full time job. and when he sees

more than 200 other people giving their time on this thanksgiving day, he knows firsthand how it can make a big difference. terry gable, intake coordinator: "i came here and ate, myself, when i was running around the street, a lot, when i was living out of my car." bob myers, volunteer: "you get a good enjoyment personally, but there is a need. we see it in our home town, we see it all around." volunteers at hope ministries woke up early thursday to prepare and box hundreds of meals. acy myers, volunteer: "they are so thankful, not only for the warm food, but the company, that people get dressed up and they come in. it's not your typical soup kitchen, it's more than that." bob myers, volunteer: "it's kind of a fulfilling, satisfaction when you go out and help people, and they're going up to you and you're kind of making their day, and they don't realize how much they're actually making your day." gabel knows it's because of genuine love that he's back on his feet. terry gable, intake coordinator: "a good, good hot meal, some encouragement and some encouraging words, that kind of thing can really change a person's perspective and outlook on life." jessica rae: the volunteers at hope ministries delivered more

than 2-thousand meals across the delivered more than 2-thousand meals across the des moines area. they also prepared dinner for more than four hundred. jessica rae: in des moines... governor branstad joined members of the plymouth congregational united church of christ to deliver a proclamation. surrounded by the clergy, deacons, and choir members who dressed in authentic pilgrim costumes to celebrate thanksgiving day.... the governor acknowledged the challenges faced by iowans. "thanksgiving day is a time for us to gather as friends and family and express our apperceation for the challenges that we have met and the many blessings that are families communities and state have experinced," said governor branstad. jessica rae: church members start thanksgiving every year with this traditrional celebration. jessica rae: four lanes four nebraska are preparing a presentation for a meeting in front of the

legislature's transportation committee. here's susan risinger with the details. -- "the group 4lanes 4nebraska plans to have representation at two hearings next week before the legislature's transportation committee. 4lanes executive director josh moenning says it is important to keep pressing the case that roads are economic development, and four-lane roads are safer than crowded two-lane roads. hiring staff and building capacity are the easy goals nebraska's new director of corrections has set for himself and his staff. scott frakes says changing the culture for employees, inmates and community partners will be harder, but it is important to move corrections forward. and nebraska attorney general doug peterson was in norfolk earlier this week, meeting with local law enforcement officers and prosecutors. peterson wants to learn first hand about the affect legislation to reduce prison overcrowding is having across the state. these and more stories can be heard on newstalk wjag, literock 97.5 and 106kix. jessica rae: new dash-cam video of the moments leading up to laquan mcdonald's deadly interaction with chicago police has been released. the video was collected from four police cars. it shows officer jason van dyke pursuing mcdonald before the shooting. van dyke is charged with first-degree murder. outraged it took 13 months to charge the officer... demonstrators have held several protests demanding justice for mcdonald. van dyke is being held without bail. a go-fund-me webpage set up by the officer's wife to raise 80- thousand-dollars has been de- activated. go-fund-me pages cannot be used to raise money for the support of one suspected activity. jessica rae: still to come we preview the heroes game between iowa and nebraska. stay tuned for more scott: today's forecast... nice weekend, monday mess!

the big game ifinally here... the undefeated iowa hawkeyes are taking on their rivals to the west, the nebraska cornhuskers who are hoping to play spoiler to the hawyeye's perfect season. but for those of you headed out to memorial stadium for the hy-vee heroes game... fans should expect heightened security when the hawkeyes meet the cornhuskers. here's why... " " after several major terror attacks internationally, unl police are following suit when it comes to safety and upping security for friday's game. "we shouldn't have to wait for something in our country to happen before we react; i think it's appropriate to take safety as a precaution," bruce claussen, a unl student,said. police will have increased security at doors and throughout the stadium and don't be surprised if they ask you to open your coats and jackets at the gate. they're also closing two gates, 6 and 8, while gates 1, 17, 18, 19, 21 and 22 are closing at kickoff; instead of staying open through the 3rd quarter. students on campus
