steve: 58 staff members became ill. stacey: that forced the school to send students home. so what caused the illness? and why was just the staff effected? kcci's jason rantala joins us live from roosevelt. jason, what does the polk county health department think happened? jason r: the health department is still investigating the cause. they say at this point they are looking at three much everything, and they are examining those who got sick. the school district say one thing in common was the lunch served to staff yesterday. dozens of students, waiting outside roosevelt high school thursday afternoon as rumors >> -- as rumors swirled. >> apparently the walking taco meat was poisoned or something like that. jason r: students say they received the announcement after noon. >> they put in on the announcements and the second they heard school is cancelled everyone like cheering. >> it was a beautiful moment.

school activities were canceled because half of the staff got sick. >> in my time with the district i don't recall anything close to , this. jason r: phil roeder with des moines public schools says while this is unprecedented he says they may have narrowed down the culprit. >> the food was brought from outside the district so it wasn't the school district's food and nutrition department that prepared it. jason r: he says when you have nearly 66 teachers -- nearly 60 six teachers -- >> >> you just can't provide enough substitutes. >> waiting for my dad to pick me up. jason r: that meant parents like kathy new had to make an early pick up. call football coach mike holland one of the fortunate ones. >> i actually ate on my own and didn't partake so i guess i lucked out. jason r: the district is now telling us this was food brought in from outside businesses. as for school tomorrow, that was never in the plan.

students were not going to be in the building, so they don't have to worry about finding substitutes. the health department says this investigation should take between 1-2 days. live in des moines, jason rantala, kcci 8 news, iowa's news leader. stacey: fire investigators say a burning candle started this fire early this morning on east mckinley. des moines fire investigators say there was no power going into the home, so the owner used candles for light. investigators think a candle burned all the way down and started the fire. steve: intimate in 2016 news there's a new front-runner in , the republican race for president here in iowa. the new quinnipiac university poll, just out today, now has ben carson leading the republican field with 28% support of likely iowa caucus-goers. that means donald trump has now slipped to second with 20%. meanwhile, marco rubio's support has grown to 13% putting him in 3rd place. speaking at a campaign stop today in oklahoma, carson says the numbers are great, but -- dr. carson: well, you know, its one poll so, when we've had

several of them then i might get a little more excited. steve: so what is donald trump's response to the new poll numbers? trump's twitter account, the real donald trump, reposted this tweet from my green hippo, which stated, ben carson is now leading in iowa and said, "too much monsanto in the corn creates issues in the brain?" but apparently the real donald trump isn't the actual donald trump. a trump campaign spokesperson says it was mistakenly tweeted from mr. trump's account by an intern. mr. trump loves the people of iowa and looks forward to being back in sioux city on tuesday. steve: representative paul ryan will run for speaker in the house -- the growth the house. the congressman says he will now run after getting unified support from across the

the boone county board of supervisors is taking a stand against the proposed bakken oil pipeline. steve: yesterday the board , passed a resolution opposing the controversial plan. kcci's rose heaphy spoke with leaders there and she joins us live in-studio. rose: the board's chair says they've received positive support from their citizens, especially those who lose their properties. but labor union leaders say iowa has much to benefit from the plan. like many boone county farmers , the hollingshead family is out harvesting their corn. >> lots of valuable farmland just like what we're standing on could potentially have that crude oil going through it. rose: it's also what lies beneath the land, that has boone county supervisor chet hollingshead worried about the proposed bakken pipeline. >> a leak from that oil spill could damage the water supply for all of us that are being supported from that water supply, so that's a concern. rose: in january, dakota access filed a petition with the iowa utilities board to build a crude oil pipeline. the bakken pipeline would cut across 18 iowa counties,

including boone, forcing landowners to give up their land through eminent domain. that is why wednesday, the boone county board of supervisors passed a resolution opposing the pipeline. like pipeline protestors have in the past, hollingshead says the board wanted to make a statement to the utilities board. >> i hope people think about it and think about the long term impacts it will have on the state. rose: labor group leaders are collecting names in support of the pipeline. they say constructing the 1100 mile long pipeline would put 400 operating engineers to work among other benefits. , >> this is domestic oil, we won't have to be overseas fighting for oil or shipping on rails. it will be better, it's safer. rose: a utilities board spokesman told me if the resolution becomes evidence in the record of this case, it will be considered by the board. the utilities board has yet to met a decision on the pipeline. a public comment hearing on the

12 in boone. in studio, rose heaphy, kcci 8 news, iowa's news leader. stacey: a judge dismissed a lawsuit by a group of landowners that wanted a judge, not the iowa utilities board, to decide if eminent domain can be used in the bakken pipeline project. judge carl petersen ruled those landowners must exhaust all administrative remedies before they can sue a state agency. petersen did not rule when the pipeline project that runs through iowa is eligible for eminent domain. steve: one convicted and one acquitted. that was the verdict today in the trial of two former 2012 ron paul for president campaign aides accused of making secret payments to a former iowa lawmaker. cameras are not allowed in federal courtroom, but kcci's kim st. onge was there. she's live in studio now with an update. kim: jesse benton and dimitri kasari are accused of trying to cover up $73,000 in payments to former state senator kent sorenson so he'd switch from the

michelle bachmann campaign to ron paul's ahead of the 2012 iowa causes. today, jurors only reached a verdict on 3 of the 6 charges. dimitri kesari had no comment when we caught him walking out of the federal courthouse just minutes after learning jurors found him guilty of causing false records. but, the jury acquitted kesari of obstruction of justice and could not agree on his charges of conspiracy and causing false campaign expenditure reports. jesse benton, ron paul's former campaign chair, left looking relieved, saying god is great. -- saying "god is great. , it feels good." jurors found benton not guilty of making false statements to law enforcement. his attorney told me he's pleased with the verdict, but knows benton could face additional charges in the future. >> we don't know what the jury thought but we gave them every, all the flaws we thought we had and they looked like they considered it and clearly came back with a verdict that was just and proper. kim: no word yet on whether

kesari will be retried for the charges the jury did not reach a verdict on. live in studio, kim st. onge, kcci 8 news, iowa's news leader. steve: sorenson has pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice and false reporting to the federal election commission. he has not yet been sentenced in that case. so could this impact the legitimacy of the iowa caucuses? >> when people have a list of gripes about the iowa caucuses, this particiular issue of the sorenson case and the question of disclosure or lack thereof campaign payments, that's fairly small beans. steve: kcci political analyst dennis goldford, believes the incorrect vote count by the republicans in 2012 is a bigger issue than the hidden payments to sorenson. stacey: pleasant hill police hope security camera pictures help them track down suspected car thieves. one of the suspects was caught on security video. he was seen october 20 using a stolen credit card at local convenience stores.

garman. steve: one member of the iowa board of regents now admits that the board may have mishandled the process that selected bruce harreld as the university of iowa's next president. regent subhash sahai this morning said, the way the search was handled may have given off an appearance of bias, and a lack of transparency. stacey: adding, "maybe we dropped the ball." he also urged the university of iowa community to give harreld a chance. regent sahai's statement comes one day after hundreds of protestors disrupted a board of regents meeting. many protestors demanded the regents resign over their handling of the selection process. steve: the university of iowa is starting a major campus online study asking students about sexual assaults on campus. the hope is to learn how many students are victims. and if those students know where to go to get the help they need. university officials say they know this survey will be hard -- will be difficult for some students to do.

but the school says they are going all out to get students to participate. >> i would encourage students who feel comfortable to take it. this is their chance to be heard. steve: the survey will be conducted through november 20. iowa congressman david young is encouraging all veterans to stop by this saturday's veterans care fair. it runs from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the pappajohn education center in the western gateway park in downtown des moines. 20 government agencies, organizations, and universities, will take part. all have one goal in mind, helping iowa veterans. >> we need to make sure they're taken care of. and this is a great opportunity to let them know that . steve: this is the first of 2 veterans care fairs that will be taking place. stacey: now let's check back in with kurtis. kurtis: temperatures are very mild for this time of year. we are in the mid-60's.
