give us some new information today on a shooting that happened almost two weeks ago. that's when an officer shot a man during an overnight stop. . since then, police have released very little information a sp release a statement today on what happened during that traffic stop that turned violent. about 1:15 a-m on november 1st, officer lucas jones stopped jerime mitchell for a traffic violation near coe college in cedar rapids. police say the 2 men got into some sort of an altercation, and that's when jones fired his gun, seriously wounding mitchell. mitchell is still in the hospital. police say iowa law doesn't allow them to release dash cam video of the incident. but the iowa public information board disagrees. while the mitchell's family waits for the video, they

help. the group is called showing up for racial justice. and they will be protesting at today's city council meeting. the newly formed is mostly white. their goal is to use what they call is their white privilege to defend people of color. they want to see the dash cam footage released, and they don't want to see the d-c-i investigating the incident "my understanding is the iowa dci and the linn county prosecutor have investigated the officer who participated in the shooting before and cleared him. they work closely with the local police departments. and we think a truly neutral investigation is l the organization say the family reached out to them for help. a state lawmaker from urbandale is working on a bill to make an assault on a police officer a hate crime. republican senator brad zaun plans to introduce legislation after the ambush earlier this month that killed these two officers.

first degree murder. zaun says he would like to see harsher penalties for anyone who attacks law officers. " urbandale 1;58 it would increase punishment. i do that, i've communicated that to the chief of police in urbandale as well as des moines i do think urbandale and dm police think that would be helpful to them." republican state representative ken rizer of cedar rapids also wants tougher penalties for assault, attempted murder or other charges involving police has enhanced penalties for assaults on officers. governor terry branstad has not ruled out the death penalty for iowa. a republican - controlled legislature could lead to renewed dicussion. people in 2 eastern iowa cities are joining in a national movement today to stop the construction of the bakken oil pipeline. dubuque and iowa city are among the dozens of cities that will have events for a national day of action. the call to action comes from native american leaders at

"we're here to represent the four different directions that have come here in ceremony and to pray for the state of north dakota." " protesters blocked traffic, which bismarck without a permit. the standing rock sioux tribe has filed a lawsuit to stop the pipeline, which the u-s army corps of engineers approved over the summer. iowa city police say a man with a gun tried to rob a woman, but he didn't get anything. a woman says she was in a parking lot at 625 south gilbert street at 8 last night when a man jumped out of a van, demanding money. she said she didn't have any and he drove away. no one was hurt. police say the suspect is thin

increase. the lisbon city council passed the first reading of an ordinance to keep the state's wage. the council needs to pass it two more times to make it official. the state minimum wage is seven-25 per hour. but earlier this year, linn county approved an increase that takes effect in january. the wage will go up by a dollar

in presidential administrations just two months away.. politically appointed leaders within the u-s-d-a are swapping out. director for u-s-d-a rural development ko-lean callahan is getting ready to move on.. she says rural development was able to invest about one billion dollars during the obama administration ... impacting hundreds of thousands of producers.. those producers now are in market.. by 2019.. that's expected to be a 20 billion dollar value.. she says the obama administration had four pillars: production agriculture, biobased economy, conservation, and local food systems. those pillars influenced how they invested money.. and while there's uncertainty in how the u-s- d-a will change.. the staff in offices around the country will stay the same.. and the on- going programs will stick around.. for now.. in oelwein now say an over-heated chicken roaster started the fire that destroyed their building. the family is now picking through the wreckage of the more than 50 year old restaurant. the fire happened late saturday afternoon. when firefighters arrived, they found heavy flames in the kitchen, which quickly spread to the ceiling. the building is a total loss, but no one was hurt. kcrg-tv9's jordee kalk trying to find bits of their history amid the damage. jordee: now the family of luigi is planning to come out to this site today to rummage through and see anything salvageable. really family just tells me they are looking for things that could be memories of this restaurant. 44:10, "some of the items we might want to save are under layers of debris." on monday, stasi family from across the country gathered to survey the damage. family say the restaurant was their father, luigi's, passion. even at 84 years old, luigi would still work 70 hours a week or more in his restaurant. family say he made the eatery an icon for this

" investigators say the fire appears to be accidental. they say the home didn't have working smoke detectors. des moines police are investigating a case of racial vandalism at a southside apartment complex. kirsten grant found the words "white power" in written on her apartment door sunday afternoon. she is bi-racial and worries that someone did this as a result of the presidential election. grant says she's lived here with her family for more than a year and targeted until this incident. she says donald trump's request for people to stop the violence during an interview with 60 minutes isn't enough. "i think it's pathetic stop it! are you serious! that's all you have to say, stop it? " last week, drake university suspended 4 students for putting racial slurs on the dorm room door of a hispanic student. today, police in iowa city are investigating a note someone left outside the home of a sudanese-american family.
