organizations are having sales and specials as an incentive to come. chris and nicole, coming up in our next half hour i stopped by one local business downtown to see what they have to offer. a dubuque man says someone stole more than $30,000 worth of his belongings while he was on vacation. that's from our coverage partner, k-d-t-h. 73-year-old ronald pothoff reported the burglary when he came home last week. he says someone broke in taking dubuque police say in addition to the stolen property, the burglar caused about $700 in damage breaking in. one iowa security salesman says more homeowners are installing video surveillance cameras. one salesman says wired video systems are a popular choice. the higher end systems usually consist of bullet or dome style cameras mounted outside the home. they're hooked up to an h-d video recorder

they are looking at alternatives to help out residents. the city says they are going to inspect homes to see if they will qualify for fema's buyout option. some protestors are going hungry this morning as they try to stop the controversial bakken oil pipeline. the three activists have started a hunger strike outside the offices of the iowa utilities board in des moines. the board decided earlier this year to allo company, dakota access, to build the pipeline across iowa. but opponents say the decision has hurt the environment. and they claim it's not too late to reverse course. ""well these people have chosen to not eat ya'know to kind of illuminate what will happen when this pipeline goes through and when it breaks they will be saving the whole state of iowa will be fasting once this pipeline breaks " the protestors from the group, mississippi stand, vow to continue their vigil outside

tsunami warnings and advisories a powerful earthquake jolted the island yesterday. there were tsunamis in the morning, but the largest measured just over 4 feet. people in tokyo could feel the earthquake shockwaves, about 150 miles southwest of the epicenter. the u-n humanitarian chief says conditions in the eastern part of aleppo, syria have gone from "terrible to barely survivable". more than 300 people have been killed from airstrikes in the last week. the syrian government started launching the attacks on

just recently started targeting hospitals. one member of the rescue group called the white helmets says none of the hospitals are operating at full capacity. the u-n humanitarian chief says food in markets is scarce and fuel in gas is unavailable in most neighborhood s. investigators are trying to figure out what caused a house fire in a small indiana town that killed four girls and hurt their mother. fire crews responded to the house early yesterday morning in flora. the town sits about an hour and a half north of indianapolis. the fire trapped bedroom. officials rushed the mom to the hospital and she is in serious condition. neighbors said the community will miss the girls. " the girls were so playful and sweet. they would do anything for anybody. they were very loving. my children absolutely loved them and adored them " two police officers were hurt responding to the fire. they are expected to recover. family and friends have started raising money for the family. the red cross says it helped

families across the state over the weekend after their homes caught fire. the fires impacted 26 adults and kids in these cities on saturday and sunday, including cedar rapids, waterloo and des moines. red cross volunteers helped them with shelter, food, clothes, and medications. as cold weather moves into iowa, the organization encourages safe use of heating equipment. one of the leading causes of home fire deaths. that's why the red cross is urging people to make sure their smoke alarms are working. it also suggests keeping kids, pets, and flammable items at least 3 feet away from a furnace or electric heater. the red cross also stressed to never use a cooking range or oven to heat your home. a school district in tennessee is offering grief counseling after a school bus crash that killed at least 5 students. overnight, police in chattanooga arrested the

"hamilton county schools has confirmed there were 35 students on board that bus. all those students attend woodmore elementary and are in grades k through 5th grade" just a mile away from the chattanooga elementary school.... a school bus ..packed with kids....ran off the road, crashed into trees ...ending up on its side in a tangled mess. bloodied students lay on stretchers.... while other kids didnt survive the accident. sot chief lives." officials say at least 5 kids were killed right now investigators believe the bus was most likely traveling too fast. no other vehicles were involved in the crash...the 24 year old bus driver was arrested and is now facing charges. sot chief fred fletcher: "johnthony walker is being charged with 5 counts of vehicular homicide, reckless endangerment , and reckless driving." it took rescue crews hours to get all the kids off the bus.... 23 of them were sent to local hospitals. sot kirk kelly: "we're just asking for prayers ..and our hearts go out to the families" stephanie ramos abc news new

in iowa, officers won't reach their goal of fewer than 300 traffic deaths this year. as of yesterday, 351 people have died on iowa roads. that's up 23% increse from last year. when it comes to speed, the iowa d-o-t found traffic on the 4 major interstates is u the same time last year. one trooper says good weather and lower gas prices could play a role in ways drivers might not expect. "with gas prices down, there may to be more people putting more miles on the highways and driving itself has got to be a risk factor put yourself in the situation where you can get in an accident, a fatal one." troopers also believe distracted and impaired driving and not using seat belts play a significant role. 41% of those

belts. cedar falls police are investigating a deadly crash at the highway 218 interchange. officials say 30-year-old richard coleman from cedar falls died in the crash. police say he was driving on highway 57 when his car crashed into a concrete pillar for the highway 218 overpass. investigators say coleman's car was the only one involved. this morning, police departments in san antonio and st. louis are searching for answers behind two police shootings. des moines area poli following the deaths of two officers killed in similar ambush-style attacks. st. louis police say the man who allegedly shot and critically injured an officer sunday night, could be connected to 2 other shootings. officials say police shot and killed the suspect, 19- year-old george bush, during a shootout yesterday morning. police say he shot a 46- year-old sergeant twice in the face. the sergeant is recovering at home today. law enforcement says bush tried to run from police before the

arrested and charged a person suspected of killing a detective. police captured 31- year-old otis mckane after an intense manhunt throughout monday. they say mckane shot and killed benjamin marconi sunday night. officials say the detective was on a traffic stop when mckane walked up to his vehicle and started shooting. "this investigation is by no means over. the motive for the capital murder is still unknown." " the san antonio police chief also says officers continue to mourn the loss of two of their own officers. des moines sergeant anthony beminio and urbandale officer justin martin were killed on november 2nd. inside the des moines police department, there are boxes of sympathy cards from across the country. now, the des moines officers plan to write their own cards to police stations dealing with similar tragedies. police say the latest ambushes are a reminder of the danger that comes with the uniform. " des moines police say they plan to discuss ways to better protect officers, including enhanced body armor. a dubuque school committee is waiting to decide whether or not to ban a book. members say they're all going to read the "the perks of being a wallflower" to better judge it's educational value. some parents are taking issue with the book, which required readin hempstead high school. it's been part of that class's curriculum for the past decade. one parent says the book normalizes illegal drug use and casual sex. now she's asking the school district to find an alternative. "we're trying to encourage kids to make healthy choices and then on the other hand we're distributing literature that glorifies unhealthy choices. " the committee now reading the book includes several high school teachers, 3 hempstead students, librarians and some parents. they'll meet again next month to

a dubuque man convicted of killing his daughter will go to prison for life. a judge formally sentenced robert stern for first-degree murder of his daughter, stern's lawyers are waiting to hear whether their client will get a new trial. they claim a judge should have not allowed prosecutors to present some evidence in the original trial in september. that includes his initial statements to police. stern shot his daughter more than a dozen times at their home last year. as the air has gotten colder, an overflow emergency shelter is now open in linn county. this shelter will stay open whenever the temperature drops below freezing. representatives from shelters and free meal

rapids. they are the willis-dady emergency shelter, mission of hope and catholic worker house, as shown here. when those beds are full, the overflow shelter will open. last year, the shelters did not announce where the overflow one was until the other shelters were full. that additional shelter served nearly 100 people last year. in johnson county, members of shelter house have opened a low-barrier shelter during the coldest months. that shelter accepts people who are intoxicated and can't get into shelter house. this ye street. the shelter is expected to open next month. it served nearly 125 people last year. public health officials in dubuque county say there's no clear reason for the increasing number of mumps cases. that's according to our coverage partner, k-d- t-h. according to the iowa department of public health, dubuque county has reported 45 mumps cases. most are linked to students at dubuque's schools. health officials say there's an increased risk of catching mumps during the holidays. they're encouraging everyone to

the salvation army in cedar rapids is getting ready today for its big thanksgiving meal. today, volunteers are going to start cooking the turkeys. the salvation army plans to feed more than 400 people tomorrow. volunteers say the meal usually benefits people who don't have access to regular hot meals. but the dinner is open to anyone in the community. while the organization says it doesn't need any extra help this week, it's encouraging people to sign up for future events.
