across the bay once the sun comes up here shortly as we look from sutro. we talk about a slow warming trend today and take a look at the winter outlet. what the climate prediction center says will happen. >> a big rig crash shut down the off-ramp in vallejo. all the details in a few minutes. >> 6:01 this monday morning. back to work and, yes, back to school for most people in the bay area. thanks for joining us. i'm eric some mass. >> i'm kristen sze. topping our news, the gunman accused of wounding a fremont police officer could be back in the bay area today to face charges. the suspected gang member was caught over the weekend trying to escape to mexico. terry mcsweeney is live at highland hospital in oakland. what's the latest on the officer? >> fremont police officer todd young is in critical but stable condition and improving after surgeryññyesterday. officer young is expecting to have additional surgeries later this week. he was shot friday trying to

arrest a suspected gang member on domestic violence charges in oakland. the 22-year-old was arrested saturday near the border in mexico. a fellow police officer donating blood gave her perspective on the shooting. >> it can happen anytime, anywhere, any type of a call, whether a regular traffic stop. whether something more -- something like a search warrant or anything. you just don't know. >> two other people arrested in this case, the man with the suspected man near the border. barotos faces a number of charges including attempted murder and he could be back here in oakland as early as today. live in oakland, terry mcsweeney, abc 7 news. >> terry, thanks a lot. five red cross agencies are accepting blood donations in officer young's name including

pleasant hill, oakland, san jose and fremont. you'll find a list of the blood centers and their addresses on our home page, abc7news.com. >> 6:03 now now. san jose police investigating a fatal shooting of a suicidal man by their own officers. police were called to a san jose apartment complex early sunday morning where a distraught man was threatening to kill himself with a nail gun. after 45 minutes of trying to reach him, police forced their way into the apartment. police say they had to shoot when he came at them with a 10-inch knife. a neighbor says he's stunned by the incident. >> he never seemed depressed or anything like that. just seemed to, you know, be like a nice jovial guy. he brought me some meat where he does his butchering. >> three officers fired a total of six shots. they are on administrative leave while the incident is investigated. >> san jose city officials are holding a community meeting tonight at city hall to talk

about their search for a new police chief. chief rob davis is retiring the ends of october but his replacement is not expected to be announced until after that person is chosen. several community groups are calling for a more open process for a department that's come under fire for aggressive tactics. the city manager offers confidentiality is necessary to attract a large pool of candidates. >> a livermore soccer coach accused of possessing and distributing child pornography is expected to be arraigned in court today. he was head coach of a girls' team. police arrested him last week. they had been investigating him for three months and found dozens of lewd photos on his home computer. police say so far none of the photos appear to be tide to local children. garrison's being healed at the jail on $40,000 bond. >> cal fire crews are making progress toward controlling a

wildfire burning in the national forest. firefighters have the 1700 acre fire 60% contained as of last night. cooler weather helped slow the fire' progress yesterday. 40 homes were threatened by the flames. most roads in the area are reopened. the fire prompted governor schwarzenegger to declare aid for the area. >> it looks as though caltrain won't cut its weekend service or its trains between gilroy and san jose, at least not for now. caltrain's conservative director says the cuts won't happen until the 2011 year. they were among the most drastic cuts to be considered for the multibillion budget deficit. other kits are still be considered including reducing weekday, early morning, monday and weekend service. >> it's 6:05.

gather along the coast. low to mid-60s half moon bay, san francisco, oakland mid to upper 60s most of the bay into the south bay around san rafael, concord. deeper into our valleys low 70s. sunny everywhere except along the coast where we have clouds continue to gather, low to mid-60s half moon bay and san francisco. upper 60s oakland and low to mid-70s through the bay. the north bay valleys and upper 70s to near 80 in the east bay valleys. your seven-day forecast, slow warming trend away from the coast. by thursday we'll be about 10 degrees warmer everywhere at the coast about 4 degrees warmer. megan has a new accident. >> we have a new crash in milpitas. eastbound 237 approaching 880. the slow lane is blocked. as you can see everything is still green which means it's not affecting traffic yet. everything moving at the limit through that area. also commuting through vallejo today, be aware the columbus parkway off-ramp is closed from westbound 80. this is due to a big rig crash.

. good morning, everyone. 6:11. almost 6:12 on the abc 7 morning news. live picture from our camera on top of mount tam. looking toward the city. is that beautiful or what, ya'll. >> ya'll! >> you can tell it's beautiful. >> yeah. >> mike's going to tell you more about the forecast, ya'll, coming up. cooler temperatures out there this morning. >> i like the informalness of it all. >> back to the west. >> okay! san francisco city workers about to lose a controversial perk. the transportation agency is eliminating free parking for all government employees and elected officials that include city streets, lots and garages. the half of the city's 27,000 workers drive to and from work though not all get free parking. this move is being considered because of the city's budget problems. some residents and small businesses say it's only fair since everyone else pays to park. >> a respected survey released today show economists are divided what the government

should do next to shore up the economy. the report from the national association of business economics finds that most economists oppose another stimulus package, they are satisfied with the fed's current rate policy keeping the interest rates low and don't believe the bush era tax cuts should be allowed to expire. the people behind the survey say it underscores the uncertainty where the economy is headed. >> the newest edition of the farmer's almanac predicts a kindser and gentler winter. the 190-year-old publication says next winter will be cold but nothing like last winter where the mid-atlantic saw record snowfall and cold weather down south. the farmer's almanac takes into account things like planetary hot spots. here in the bay area we had a really cold summer but most of the country it was wicked hot. >> the almanac satellites and

deep sea recordings they use for forecastses. >> absolutely. let's talk about temperatures and other things we use as far as the climate predictions. let's take a look -- i had some graphics made for you. we'll show you those in a minute. first a look outside. you can see from downtown san francisco back to the port of oakland how it's pretty clear until you get over to the east bay shore and we have clouds. now taking a look at those graphics. thank you. december, january, february. here in the bay area we have an equal chance of being above normal. as we broaden out the perspective, you can see what el nino, the abnormally cool pacific ocean waters do to the south and midwest it's actually warmer than average during the winter with the cool weather right along the canadian coast. oregon and washington above

normal. that's where most of the rain is going to go. stormtracker stays up there. cooler than average. santa rosa, napa and los gatos mid to upper 40s today. low to mid-50s the rest of us. antioch a little warmer at 57. monterey bay santa cruz. even inland towards gilroy, 49. monterey and salinas 52. sunny around the bay and inland today. we'll see some clouds develop abeing lo the coast as the afternoon unfolds. a slow warming trend this week with the best jump in temperatures in our inland valleys. it will cool again for the weekend. i don't think it's going to be quite as cool as it was last weekend. here's a look at the cloud cover, 5:00 this morning through the morning commute mainly along the east bay shore, santa cruz mountains and the monterey bay. by noon everybody's cleared out except the coast where we're seeing the clouds start to slowly creep as the sea breeze develops. 60s along the coast, 70s the bay, 80 inland.

he said he never use steroids or human growth hormone. he's expected to plead not guilty. if convicted he could face six years in prison. >> doctors are seeing an alarming jump in teen athletes treated for concussion. a ten-year study shows emergency room visits by 14 to 19 year olds with concussions can tripled from 7,000 cases in 1997 to 22,000 in 2007. the larger numbers are due to greater awareness and the intensifying of teen sports. they say kids with head injuries should never return to play until all symptoms are gone. the study was published online today in the journal of pediatrics. >> 6:20. coming up youtube.com is going hollywood. what you'll be able to see on the video streaming site. >> what do you think, is it a stunning stunt or !%

today's tech bay into the south bay, youtube.com is ready to go hollywood. the financial times reports that google's in talks with major studios about adding streaming movies to youtube.com. the movies would be available on a pay-per-view basis and new releases $5 each. the authoritative guy to the english language may soon only be available online. the publisher of the 126-year-old oxford english dictionary may not be printed on paper at all. the dictionary's website gets 2 million hits. the printed addition published in 1989 has only sold about 30,000 since. today's amazing app. postman let's you create and send virtual postcards. snap a photo, add a greeting and write your message. the virtual postcard can be shared on e-mail, facebook.com and twitter and other sites. it sells for $2.99 on i-tunes.

remotely. that is martina navratilova. remember the tennis legend helping celebrate the u.s. tennis association's west open there. hopefully we'll be ringing bells on wall street as well. shows consumer spending rose in july at the fastest pace in four months. that's what we have in a new report. help by jump in demand for automobiles but concern spending to slip if unemployment remains in double digits. so we'll see and we'll go live to the new york stock exchange in 15 minutes. >> in the news this morning, recent alleged east oakland gang member could be back in the bay area as soon as this morning to face charges in the shooting of a fremont police officer. the police officer remains in critical condition and has already had at least two surgeries. terry mcsweeney is live in oakland with more. terry, the suspect had almost made it to mexico. >> almost. we are told he was within 15 feet of the border when he was arrested on saturday.

as for fremont police officer todd young, he is listed in critical but stable condition and improving. officer young was shot friday in oakland while trying to arrest a man on a domestic violence warrant and that may meanship is the suspect. as you mentioned, a suspected gang member, arrested saturday approximately 15 feet from the mexico border. a blood drive in officer young's honor yet broad out a lot of supporters. >> i'm here because i come from a family where there was a police officer. my cousin was killed in 1996. and i just feel like i should pay it back. >> the man with him at the time of his arrest could be back in oakland as early as today to face charges. also under arrest is a woman who is considered an accomplice. she was arrested in union city on friday.

barotos being held on a number of charges, including attempted murder. terry mcsweeney, abc 7 news. >> terry, thank you. also five red cross agencies are accepting blood donations in officer young's name, including ones in pleasant hill, oakland, pleasanton, san jose and fremont. you'll find a list and their addresses on our home page, abc7news.com. >> a fatal police shooting capped a particularly violent weekend in san jose. three of the city's 18 homicides this year also happened this weekend. two men were shot saturday night during a shoot-out in an apartment complex parking lot on morris court in west san jose. and a 19-year-old woman was shot to death on san jose court friday night. police were called to a south san jose apartment complex early sunday morning where a distraught man was threatening to kill himself with a nail gun. after 45 minutes of trying to reach him, police forced their way into his apartment. they say that's when the deadly confrontation occurred. >> the suspect inside the

residence that has a self-inflicted wound was also armed with a 10-inch knife. he confronted the officers in a very close proximity and the officers discharged their weapons. >> three officers fired a total of about six shots killing the man. police say the officers did have tasers but did not use them. why they chose not to use them will be part of the follow-up investigation. san francisco police are investigating 12 separate thefts of bare copper wire from beneath city streets over the past three weeks. the copper theft has resulted in power outages including this one at mount zion hospital last week. the hospital had to operate on backup generators while pg&e repaired and replaced stolen copper wires from an underground vault. police say the copper thefts take place between 2:00 and 6:00 in the morning. the thieves park near a manhole cover and cut 1 inch thick copper wires.

>> activists will hold a news conference today to talk about plans to occupy a child care center tomorrow to protest its closure. the golden gate and san jose child development centers are still set to close because they're out of state money. the centers provide child care for dozens of low income families. the bay area community coalition to defend affirmative action plans to hold a sit-in at the golden gate child development center and they're trying to find a way to keep the centers open using unpaid volunteers. >> for the 4th time this month, san jose firefighters discovered an illegal marijuana grow house while battling a house fire. the latest reported at a home on plainview court. investigators believe it was sparked by faulty wiring that had been rigged to help the marijuana gross avoid detection. no one was home at the time. >> in baghdad u.s. troops and their equipment continue to move out of iraq. the u.s. military has been loading up everything from helicopters to printer cartridges and shipping it out

of the country. soldiers who had battled insurgents are now doing inventory and accounting. they're reversing the u.s. military presence that built up over seven years of war. there were 170,000 troops in iraq following the surge in 2008. only 50,000 u.s. service personnel will remain after the august withdrawal deadline. we'll hear more from the president tomorrow night. president obama plans to deliver a speech outlining the end of operations there. we'll have the address live here on abc 7 starting 5 p.m. >> the opening of a new bike path in san rafael is being delayed because of the state budget. the pathway was supposed to open last summer. now the work is finished except for wiring the final half of the lighting. but the state budget delay prevents the state from paying pg&e to do that. caltrain won't open the path until the work is finished. >> it's 6:35 this monday morning. let's see what the conditions

are like as you prepare to head out the door. >> yeah. fairly clear this morning, mike. >> except along the east bay shore where we have a little cloudiness. also some of that around the monterey bay. the 24 hour temperature change, the trough of low pressure that brought us that chilly weekend is slowly moving to the east. we'll see a slow warming trend. today san jose about 76 once again. oakland and san francisco 1 degree warmerer, santa rosa 2, fremont 3. let's break down our monday. the clouds starting to dissipate by 8:00. still mid to upper 40s santa rosa, napa. low to mid-50s the rest of us. noontime temperatures mid-60s around bait -- bay and also the north bay valleys. you start to see clouds gather along the coast and half moon bay about 60. by 4:00, we'll have more clouds along the coast, about 60 half moon bay bay. 60 san francisco and oakland with low 70s throughout the bay.

mid to upper 70s in the south bay and north bay and over into the east bay valleys. let's take a look at that slow warming trend. it peaks about thursday when we hit the low to mid-90s inland. mid to upper 80s around the bay and mid-60s at the coast and close in on the bay area, increasing clouds and cooler temperatures through the holiday weekend. megan? >> good morning. commuting through the vallejo area, the columbus parkway off-ramp is closed from westbound 80 due to an earlier big rig crash. a new crash in hayward. the crash is on the shoulder. tow truck is on the scene but this yellow means we have speeds below 40 mph as you approach the scene of the crash. going to check on drive times for your monday morning. starting to get sluggish out of antioch on westbound 4, 26 minutes from lone tree way to 242. expect about a half hour commute making your way through the altamont pass on westbound 580 between 205 and 680 although we did get reports of a new crash

art, a source of light and blight that becomes the focal point of any space and sees a good way to make a living. the pet jelly fish craze began ten years ago when the monterey aquarium induced its jelly fish exhibit. >> people were captivated by them but no one figured out how to let people have their own at home because they need special tanks and special food. i started experimenting and figured out a tank and a food that worked. >> a solution spawned by misery when his biotech job in the east bay you can say went down the tubes. >> we were analyzing species samples and extracting cholesterol from them. >> suddenly jelly fish never looked better and he designed a filtration just for jelly fish that would keep them afloat. he found retailers around the world who sold jelly fish. now you can order a couple jelly

also dell and three par other on that news. overall stocks are lower, too. that's a report showing consumer spending rose more. you see the dow down 7 points. the s & p down slightly and also the nasdaq's lower, too. your bloomberg silicon valley index bucking the trend in gaining. see it up three points. that's business news live at the new york stock exchange. >> courtney, thank you so much. >> mining officials in chile say 35 trapped miners will have to help in their own rescue operation. they sent greedings to their teams. some broke down when they began speaking about their which was and children. mining officials say the men have to clear thousands of tons of rock that will fall as a rescue hole is drilled. it could take rescuers four months to get to the men. >> this morning a volcano in western indonesia is erupting for the first time in 400 years.

the eruption that is thrown sand and ash up to a mile into the air and experts say there's been some lava flow near the volcano's crater. up to 10,000 people have been evacuated as a precaution and television reports that respiratory complications have killed one person and hospitalized dozens of others. so far no major property damage. >> his name is early and the national hurricane center says it could become a major storm in the week. a hurricane warning now issued for the u.s. virgin islands. the category 2 storm is pushing heavy rains and 110 mph winds on the islands as tourists look for shelter inside their rooms. there is a chance the storm could become a category 4. it could bush the mid-atlantic region with its closest approach to north carolina on thursday. >> they've got some major rip current concerns, right? >> absolutely. it takes that turning to the north and the northwest, yeah.

the currents will still keep heading to the west which is north to northeast. they'll have dangerous rip currents up and down the coast all this week. for us nothing like that. we've got clear sky looking from tam. and some of the clouds hanging around the east bay shore in morning. you can see the transition taking place from the trough of low pressure and cold temperatures over the weekend to slightly warmer, more summer-like heat on the way for parts of us this week. let's talk about some temperatures outside. still rather chilly around santa rosa, napa and los gatos. mid to upper 40s there. redwood city 51. livermore at 52. also fremont at 52. the rest of us mid-50s. watsonville 52, monterey 55. sunny around the bay today. patchy coastal clouds. the slow warming through the week. we'll see the biggest jump in temperatures inland, especially the east bay valleys. cooling for the weekend.

probably not a repeat of the last two saturdays where it felt a lot like fall and looked like it, too, with the clouds. oakland today, san francisco 3 degrees cooler than average. concord 4. san jose 6 and santa rosa and redwood city 8 and 9 degrees cooler than average. all right. here we are looking to the cloud cover along the east bay shore, the monterey bay. notice how quickly it starts to dissipate. by noon. but notice the clouds developing along the coast this afternoon keeping you in the 60s, 80s inland. east bay valleys, low to mid-80s here. where our warmest weather will be today. other than berkeley and richmond, it's 67 to 65. i think we'll see low to mid-70s through the east bay shore. down along the south bay, warmest weather. 79 dropping to san jose, 76. eventually milpitas. along the coast you see the clouds gathering and the

jim parson won best actor in a comedy for big bank series. top chef best reality show and best variety, music or comedy series many were pulling for conan o'brien but it ended up going to john stewart, the daily show. >> recapping our top stories, the gunman accused of shooting a fremont police officer could be back in the bay area today to face charges. meantime the officer is still in critical condition. >> terry mcsweeney is live outside highland hospital in oakland with the latest. terry? >> fremont police officer todd young is here at highland hospital and listed in critical but stable condition and improving after surgery yesterday. officer young is expected to have additional surgeries later this week. he was shot friday in oakland trying to arrest a suspected gang member on domestic violence charges. 20-year-old andrew barotos was arrested saturday near the mexican border. yesterday it was a blood drive in officer young's honor.
