arrest a suspected gang member on domestic violence charges in oakland. the 22-year-old was arrested saturday near the border in mexico. a fellow police officer donating blood gave her perspective on the shooting. >> it can happen anytime, anywhere, any type of a call, whether a regular traffic stop. whether something more -- something like a search warrant or anything. you just don't know. >> two other people arrested in this case, the man with the suspected man near the border. barotos faces a number of charges including attempted murder and he could be back here in oakland as early as today. live in oakland, terry mcsweeney, abc 7 news. >> terry, thanks a lot. five red cross agencies are accepting blood donations in officer young's name including

pleasant hill, oakland, san jose and fremont. you'll find a list of the blood centers and their addresses on our home page, abc7news.com. >> 6:03 now now. san jose police investigating a fatal shooting of a suicidal man by their own officers. police were called to a san jose apartment complex early sunday morning where a distraught man was threatening to kill himself with a nail gun. after 45 minutes of trying to reach him, police forced their way into the apartment. police say they had to shoot when he came at them with a 10-inch knife. a neighbor says he's stunned by the incident. >> he never seemed depressed or anything like that. just seemed to, you know, be like a nice jovial guy. he brought me some meat where he does his butchering. >> three officers fired a total of six shots. they are on administrative leave while the incident is investigated. >> san jose city officials are holding a community meeting tonight at city hall to talk

about their search for a new police chief. chief rob davis is retiring the ends of october but his replacement is not expected to be announced until after that person is chosen. several community groups are calling for a more open process for a department that's come under fire for aggressive tactics. the city manager offers confidentiality is necessary to attract a large pool of candidates. >> a livermore soccer coach accused of possessing and distributing child pornography is expected to be arraigned in court today. he was head coach of a girls' team. police arrested him last week. they had been investigating him for three months and found dozens of lewd photos on his home computer. police say so far none of the photos appear to be tide to local children. garrison's being healed at the jail on $40,000 bond. >> cal fire crews are making progress toward controlling a

wildfire burning in the national forest. firefighters have the 1700 acre fire 60% contained as of last night. cooler weather helped slow the fire' progress yesterday. 40 homes were threatened by the flames. most roads in the area are reopened. the fire prompted governor schwarzenegger to declare aid for the area. >> it looks as though caltrain won't cut its weekend service or its trains between gilroy and san jose, at least not for now. caltrain's conservative director says the cuts won't happen until the 2011 year. they were among the most drastic cuts to be considered for the multibillion budget deficit. other kits are still be considered including reducing weekday, early morning, monday and weekend service. >> it's 6:05.

should do next to shore up the economy. the report from the national association of business economics finds that most economists oppose another stimulus package, they are satisfied with the fed's current rate policy keeping the interest rates low and don't believe the bush era tax cuts should be allowed to expire. the people behind the survey say it underscores the uncertainty where the economy is headed. >> the newest edition of the farmer's almanac predicts a kindser and gentler winter. the 190-year-old publication says next winter will be cold but nothing like last winter where the mid-atlantic saw record snowfall and cold weather down south. the farmer's almanac takes into account things like planetary hot spots. here in the bay area we had a really cold summer but most of the country it was wicked hot. >> the almanac satellites and

as for fremont police officer todd young, he is listed in critical but stable condition and improving. officer young was shot friday in oakland while trying to arrest a man on a domestic violence warrant and that may meanship is the suspect. as you mentioned, a suspected gang member, arrested saturday approximately 15 feet from the mexico border. a blood drive in officer young's honor yet broad out a lot of supporters. >> i'm here because i come from a family where there was a police officer. my cousin was killed in 1996. and i just feel like i should pay it back. >> the man with him at the time of his arrest could be back in oakland as early as today to face charges. also under arrest is a woman who is considered an accomplice. she was arrested in union city on friday.

barotos being held on a number of charges, including attempted murder. terry mcsweeney, abc 7 news. >> terry, thank you. also five red cross agencies are accepting blood donations in officer young's name, including ones in pleasant hill, oakland, pleasanton, san jose and fremont. you'll find a list and their addresses on our home page, abc7news.com. >> a fatal police shooting capped a particularly violent weekend in san jose. three of the city's 18 homicides this year also happened this weekend. two men were shot saturday night during a shoot-out in an apartment complex parking lot on morris court in west san jose. and a 19-year-old woman was shot to death on san jose court friday night. police were called to a south san jose apartment complex early sunday morning where a distraught man was threatening to kill himself with a nail gun. after 45 minutes of trying to reach him, police forced their way into his apartment. they say that's when the deadly confrontation occurred. >> the suspect inside the

residence that has a self-inflicted wound was also armed with a 10-inch knife. he confronted the officers in a very close proximity and the officers discharged their weapons. >> three officers fired a total of about six shots killing the man. police say the officers did have tasers but did not use them. why they chose not to use them will be part of the follow-up investigation. san francisco police are investigating 12 separate thefts of bare copper wire from beneath city streets over the past three weeks. the copper theft has resulted in power outages including this one at mount zion hospital last week. the hospital had to operate on backup generators while pg&e repaired and replaced stolen copper wires from an underground vault. police say the copper thefts take place between 2:00 and 6:00 in the morning. the thieves park near a manhole cover and cut 1 inch thick copper wires.

>> activists will hold a news conference today to talk about plans to occupy a child care center tomorrow to protest its closure. the golden gate and san jose child development centers are still set to close because they're out of state money. the centers provide child care for dozens of low income families. the bay area community coalition to defend affirmative action plans to hold a sit-in at the golden gate child development center and they're trying to find a way to keep the centers open using unpaid volunteers. >> for the 4th time this month, san jose firefighters discovered an illegal marijuana grow house while battling a house fire. the latest reported at a home on plainview court. investigators believe it was sparked by faulty wiring that had been rigged to help the marijuana gross avoid detection. no one was home at the time. >> in baghdad u.s. troops and their equipment continue to move out of iraq. the u.s. military has been loading up everything from helicopters to printer cartridges and shipping it out

of the country. soldiers who had battled insurgents are now doing inventory and accounting. they're reversing the u.s. military presence that built up over seven years of war. there were 170,000 troops in iraq following the surge in 2008. only 50,000 u.s. service personnel will remain after the august withdrawal deadline. we'll hear more from the president tomorrow night. president obama plans to deliver a speech outlining the end of operations there. we'll have the address live here on abc 7 starting 5 p.m. >> the opening of a new bike path in san rafael is being delayed because of the state budget. the pathway was supposed to open last summer. now the work is finished except for wiring the final half of the lighting. but the state budget delay prevents the state from paying pg&e to do that. caltrain won't open the path until the work is finished. >> it's 6:35 this monday morning. let's see what the conditions

the eruption that is thrown sand and ash up to a mile into the air and experts say there's been some lava flow near the volcano's crater. up to 10,000 people have been evacuated as a precaution and television reports that respiratory complications have killed one person and hospitalized dozens of others. so far no major property damage. >> his name is early and the national hurricane center says it could become a major storm in the week. a hurricane warning now issued for the u.s. virgin islands. the category 2 storm is pushing heavy rains and 110 mph winds on the islands as tourists look for shelter inside their rooms. there is a chance the storm could become a category 4. it could bush the mid-atlantic region with its closest approach to north carolina on thursday. >> they've got some major rip current concerns, right? >> absolutely. it takes that turning to the north and the northwest, yeah.

the currents will still keep heading to the west which is north to northeast. they'll have dangerous rip currents up and down the coast all this week. for us nothing like that. we've got clear sky looking from tam. and some of the clouds hanging around the east bay shore in morning. you can see the transition taking place from the trough of low pressure and cold temperatures over the weekend to slightly warmer, more summer-like heat on the way for parts of us this week. let's talk about some temperatures outside. still rather chilly around santa rosa, napa and los gatos. mid to upper 40s there. redwood city 51. livermore at 52. also fremont at 52. the rest of us mid-50s. watsonville 52, monterey 55. sunny around the bay today. patchy coastal clouds. the slow warming through the week. we'll see the biggest jump in temperatures inland, especially the east bay valleys. cooling for the weekend.

your way through the tolls and heading into san francisco. through the north bay, a live look in san rafael where traffic is moving nicely on 101 heading southbound making your way out of novato towards the golden gate bridge. for the latest traffic updates, go to abc7news.com and click on the traffic link. eric? >> megan, thank you very much. our time now 6:53. it appears the restrictions put on clouds and truck traffic on the eastern end of san francisco's market street is apparently working. the great streets project says the number of cyclists on eastbound market increased by more than half and pedestrian traffic is up as well. at the same time there are 46% fewer cars and muni says buses with moving faster in the area. since last fall, southbound vehicles reaching market on 6th, 8th and 10th streets are not allowed to turn left on to market and cars heading east on market are forced to make a right turn at those intersections. >> it appears it's good to be a mad man or part of a modern family, at least when it comes

jim parson won best actor in a comedy for big bank series. top chef best reality show and best variety, music or comedy series many were pulling for conan o'brien but it ended up going to john stewart, the daily show. >> recapping our top stories, the gunman accused of shooting a fremont police officer could be back in the bay area today to face charges. meantime the officer is still in critical condition. >> terry mcsweeney is live outside highland hospital in oakland with the latest. terry? >> fremont police officer todd young is here at highland hospital and listed in critical but stable condition and improving after surgery yesterday. officer young is expected to have additional surgeries later this week. he was shot friday in oakland trying to arrest a suspected gang member on domestic violence charges. 20-year-old andrew barotos was arrested saturday near the mexican border. yesterday it was a blood drive in officer young's honor.
