big problems for drivers in alameda county. >> a major accident has closed the webster street tube. let's check with frances dinglasan for more. >> police pulled over somebody for a traffic stop. this happened around 12:30 early this morning. and then that driver, the suspect, fled and went the wrong way down the webster street tube. so he was heading towards oakland. he crashed into a driver in the correct direction heading through the area. that driver was taken to the hospital so the webster street tube will be closed until about 6:30. you may want to consider alternates such as the park street or fruitdale avenue bridge just to get around that mess until that time. in the meantime, terry mcsweeney has arrived at the scene and has the latest information for us. terry? >> broadway and oakland and this is the entrance to the webster tube. this connects oakland with alameda and it has been closed

since about 12:30. here is a van. we've seen this all morning long. we see the airport shuttle bus going up to the tube unable to go through. about midnight, as frances was saying, there was a car stop on the alameda side. the car took off. alameda police say they did not pursue. and the car went the wrong way through the webster tube, slammed into another car going the correct way. as it happens in a surprising number of these cases, the person going the right way doing nothing wrong was the one severely injured and the one going the wrong way got out of the car and took off. that person we are told has been arrested. the latest estimate we have on the reopening of the webster tube is 6:30 this morning as they deal with the crime scene down in the middle of it. in the meantime there are four ways around it. frances is going to have more on that in a little bit. but just to let you know, fifth and broadway, if you're thinking about going into the webster

tube, it's closed until 6:30 this morning. we have an injury accident, someone severely injured in that tube, someone going the right way slammed into by someone going the wrong way. live in oakland, terry mcsweeney, abc 7 news. >> good alternates for us, terry. we'll be checking back with you as well. fremont police are looking for the van driver who rammed and injured a motorcycle officer. the man remains on the loose after a massive manhunt that stopped bart trains during rush hour. theresa garcia is live at fremont police department with the latest. theresa? >> well, this morning fremont police say their injured officer is recovering after surgery on a broken leg. he is lucky, they say, after being hit, dragged, and pinned under a stolen van. and the hunt continues for the driver who did this. now, investigators are saying that the suspect driving the stolen van accelerated toward the officer and hit him, pushing him across two lanes of traffic. this happened monday morning near the intersection of warm springs and mission boulevard. the 43-year-old veteran officer

was alert enough to radio for help for himself. then it took rescue workers 15 minutes to extricate him from the wreckage. the suspect ran from the crash to an office complex. the officers say it looks intentional. >> it was a forceful push all the way. it was not just -- he was like being scraped. and there was like -- the motorcycle was scraping the pavement. >> fremont police along with half a dozen other agencies spent all day searching for the suspect of the stolen van, even cord donning off an area and searching all the traffic passing through. one point officers thought they cornered him at the south hayward bart station during rush hour but it turned out to be someone who knows him. that person was taken into custody. the suspect is described as a hispanic male, 25 to 30 years old, about 6 feet tall with a medium build. he was last wearing a reddish sweatshirt and blue jeans and a

dark blue or black baseball cap. the investigators are handling this case as an attempted murder on the motorcycle officer and they are asking anyone who has any information who please contact fremont police, theresa garcia, abc 7 news. >> thanks so much, theresa. and we continue following breaking news on a statewide amber alert. we learned within the past few hours authorities detained a man following a chase in fresno county. but they're still trying to find an eight-year-old kidnapped last night. 60 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. she was wearing a light purple winnie the pooh sweater and p blue jeans when she was kidnapped from her home at 8:30. we will bring you the latest updates on air and online at abc7news.com. >> san jose police say a man wanted for stabbing an acquaintance and kidnapping his 18-year-old girlfriend is in custody this morning. 28-year-old brian adron surrendered to police last

night. police say the 18-year-old woman was with him and appeared unharmed. they say he disappeared with her sunday morning after he went to her house and stabbed the man she was with. that man is expected to recover. >> a san francisco supervisor has introduced a measure urging nail salons to get rid of these toxic chemicals they use in favor of a greener alternative. nail polish removers are a public health hazard. they can cause cancer, dizziness and are considered harmful to pregnant women. it would not force salons to switch to non-toxic products but rather say program that would acknowledge those salon that is are chemical-free. customers say it's a good idea. >> in the other salons when they're sitting there with mask on, you gotta wonder how healthy it is for them as well as for clients. >> only a handful of the nearly 200 nail salons use the more expensive nontoxic products. a board of supervisors is expected to vote on the proposed

ordinance next tuesday. >> two of u.c. berkeley's 35 fraternity houses have settled a lawsuit from a berkeley man saying he hasn't had a good night's sleep in ten years. owners of the omega fraternity on 8th street are going to keep the noise down and clean up litter. if they don't, they could appoint a director to oversee them. they plan to fight the lawsuit filed by paul gycel. >> a little noisy over san francisco but i welcome this noise because the blue angels are in the bay area and began rehearsals already for fleet week. they roared into sfo yesterday. the angels are set to begin rehearsing on thursday. many of the pilots have completed the navy's top gun program. they can reach speeds to mauk 2.

overall rating. auto makers are worried the tougher tests and lower results could hinder auto sales. several bay area cities have joined a lawsuit challenging the environmental impact report for california's high-speed rail project. palo alto, menlo park are among the plaintiffs. they're questioning high-speed rail ridership and revenue forecasts. they say those forecasts are misrepresented and invalid. higher ridership would require more trains per hour and that in turn would have a greater impact on communities and the environment. the california high-speed rail authority is responsible for planning the system. >> if you're worried the jewelry you're wearing contains lead, two free screenings in the bay area this week. follows an investigation by california watch which shows state regulators issued five violations to national retailer for selling jewelry containing harmful levels of lead. the screenings will take place tomorrow in oakland and sunday in richmond.

the schwarzenegger administration is ordering the department of social services to cut off welfare debit card use by casinos and cruise ships. recipients spent $59 million of their benefits out of state including casinos, upscale shopping centers in hawaii and cruise ships. it was based on figures from the california department of social services between january 2007 and may 2010. welfare advocates say there's no evidence this money was used in a fraudulent way but taxpayer watchdogs say some of the findings are outrageous. >> if we have money to waste to give to welfare recipients to spend in las vegas casinos, then clearly we have too much money in the system. and we need to fix it.

this is the man wanted in saturday's attack. we're going to show you the sketch. at the park regency complex. he's white, 5-8 with brown hair and facial hair. he was wearing jeans and t-shirt and black baseball cap saturday night. it was the fifth attack since june at this apartment complex. 22-year-old antonio wooten of berk has been charged with the attack. >> crime stoppers is offering up to $10,000 for information on who shot leslie ramirez. police believe the shooting was gang-related. leslie is recovering. >> san francisco supervisors gave preliminary approval to a law that would ban fast food

restaurants from including ties with children's meals unless they meet certain conditions. they're expected to vote on it in two weeks. it would allow mcdonald's and other restaurants to include toys and meals if those meals also have a half cup each of fruits and vegetables. the meals must also be limited in their amounts of sugar, sodium and fat. santa clara county supervisors adopted a similar law in april that banned all fast food freebies. >> a woman who previously worked as a nanny for meg whitman says she believes a story of a housekeeper that went public last week admitting she was in the country illegally. nikki says she was fired when she asked for help to become a legal resident. jill armstrong of mountainview tells the san francisco chronicle she quit after just two months because she was having trouble getting paid what

one-way tube connecting oakland to alameda. i am on the alameda side of it. traffic is supposed to come this way from oakland to alameda. but that silver chevrolet traverse that you see behind me with the alameda police crime technician taking a look at it was going the wrong way around midnight tonight. it was after a police stop. and then the vehicle takes off. two men in the front seat, two women in the black. gets in a head on on crash with a gold toyota corolla, slams into the back of that black toyota. the two men inside that silver vehicle run. they are apprehended. the person inside the black toyota corolla is in very bad shape, taken to the hospital. and the driver of the gold toyota corolla also taken to the hospital. so we've got two people in the hospital, one in especially bad shape. the driver of that black toyota corolla who was doing absolutely

nothing wrong, driving the correct way coming out of the webster tube, and that silver chevrolet traverse heading the wrong way into it, not quite getting to the tube. as you can see, investigators still on the scene out here. the tube is closed and expected to stay closed until about 6:30 this morning. we'll keep you posted. live in alameda, terry mcsweeney, abc 7 news. >> terry, thanks a lot. it's 5:49. pg&e customers have a new way to find out if they're close to a major gas pipeline. the utility says you can create a free online county that will give you access to a basic map of gas pipelines in a two-mile radius around your home. the map has less details than what's been shown to city officials. the digital maps are in response to last month's fatal san bruno explosion. pg&e has been under pressure to provide more information about the location of its pipelines. for more on the neighborhood maps, go to our website abc7news.com. >> major league baseball is close to recommending a new stadium site for the oakland

the area of low pressure now backing its way towards us and bringing all that unsettled weather with it. that's why i think we'll see mountain tops get some scattered showers today. most of the wet weather still confined to the sierra. the afternoon you can see it kind of breaks off and heads towards us, up just east of the santa clara valley and just south of livermore. during the overnight hours, looks like we'll have another chance of wet weather, mainly across the north bay and scattered showers developing during the morning and afternoon hours for the rest of us. the key is they'll be scattered but tomorrow they could be stronger and contain some thunder, maybe even small hail. for today though we'll see sunshine unlike we did most of the day in the east bay valleys. that's why temperatures are back into the low to mid-70s. east bay shore, upper 60s to low 70s with a partly cloudy sky. partly sunny in the south bay, a little more sunshine than yesterday. temperatures in the low 70s. on the peninsula go with a partly cloudy sky and upper 60s

to near 70 degrees. lots of sunshine along the coast today but temperatures around 60 to 61 degrees. downtown south san francisco and sausalito, mid to upper 60s with low to mid-60s at your beaches in the north bay. mid to upper 70s at your valleys and monterey bay, mid-60s from monterey and carmel. low to mid-70s from santa cruz to morgan hill, gilroy and hollister. again, the showers mainly hanging out to your east. tonight you can see that swath of moisture across the north bay. still think 49 cloverdale and santa rosa with low to mid-50s and more clouds for the rest of us tomorrow morning. your accu-weather seven-day forecast, temperatures cooler with increasing clouds and that threat of a shower or thunderstorm. thursday drier but the temperatures still pretty cool. it's friday. especially saturday, sunday we see the dominance of sunshine. actually a little warmer than average weather away from the coast. hope you have a great tuesday. here's frances, busy morning. >> very busy. there have been quite a few accidents this early morning.
