we've now learned that toyota has paid a southern california family $10 million after a deadly accident in a runaway lexus. a passenger called 911 just before last year's deadly crash. he told police the accelerator was stuck and the car was going 120 miles an hour. the accident thrown a series of rerecalls. a traffic nightmare in oregon was caught on tape. the second trailer flipped over, it was making a turn in medford, crushing a pickup truck that stopped for a red light. the pickup truck's driver was trapped for several hours and seriously injured. another surveillance camera shows a dramatic rescue, a pickup truck exploded after a crash. a rookie police officer in

we are so used to doing it on mondays. we thought the holidays are here, why not do something special and show you what we like to watch on the holidays. good morning and thanks for being with us on this friday. i'm vinita nair. >> i'm mike marusarz sitting in for rob nelson. millions of people will be hitting the road this morning heading out to the mall or out of town. retailers expect huge crowds as many stores are open around the clock. >> travelers can expect to spend some extra cash as well. t.j. winick reports. >> reporter: hitting the roads for the holidays is proving to be more costly than ever before. for the first time in more than two years, thursday the national average for a regular gallon of gas jumped up over the $3 gallon mark. up over 13% from one year ago, 76% higher than two years ago. >> on a national average basis we have never paid $3 a gallon on christmas eve or on christmas. >> reporter: and yet prices at the pump don't seem to be keeping folks at home. aaa estimates more than 92 million americans will travel 50 miles or more from home this

holiday. that's over 3% more than last yes, sir. nine of ten will travel by car. almost 3 million will fly. >> i have two daughters here in chicago. i spent a lot of time with. and one in l.a. so every christmas, i go there for about six, seven days. >> reporter: thursday was expected to be the busiest day of the week at chicago's o'hare and midway airports. our system of winter weather making its way east may ensure a white christmas for millions. these indiana residents are heading to cancun, mexico. preferring white sand to white snow. >> we're looking forward to it. we need the vacation. >> we've done it several times before, we love it. it's warm and the people are friendly. and blue skies. >> reporter: experts predict the rise in the price of gas will continue and that drivers could see prices as high as $3.50 a gallon by the spring. t.j. winick, abc news, new york. well, it is beginning to look a lot like christmas in northern arizona. while most of the state has been deluged by rain and even flooding, the same storm dumped half a foot of snow off the

flagstaff area. so much prettier there. it will probably be gone by tomorrow because the meltdown is in the forecast today. it was hardly a winter wonderland in sioux falls, south dakota. icy and snowy conditions made the commute extra dangerous, causing a chain-reaction accident. several cars were involved. the sheriff says most of the drivers had no idea how slippery the roads had become. expect treacherous roads again today in the dakotas and the upper midwest. >> accuweather's amy aaronson has our travelers forecast. good morning, amy. >> thank you, vinita and mike. we are actually looking at a white christmas eve for parts of the midwest today. the heaviest snow certainly staying right to the south of the twin cities, although we are tracking light snow from chicago through st. louis. that means travel concerns on i-35 and 65 with icy conditions to the south of i-70. now, the snow making an unusual appearance in parts of the south by christmas day. cities like atlanta, charlotte, raleigh and birmingham.

all over again with christmas on a saturday, many shoppers have today off and are heading for the stores. >> there you go. >> reporter: christmas bells are ringing in the form of cash registers. bargain hunters hoping to snag last-minute deals are gifts for retailers trying to get back in the black. according to a new retail survey, shoppers are shelling out $1 billion more this year than last. >> it's clearly a different mood than what we saw last year. there's more energy, it's more exciting, the consumers are certainly more interested in participating in the event. >> reporter: a new commerce department report shows overall, consumer spending rose 0.4% in november. consumer confidence is at its highest level in six months. and check out these malls in florida. hundreds of people lined up to buy the latest michael jordan basketball shoes. >> went through hell. some guy punched me in the face. >> reporter: despite minimal increases in salaries and wages, holiday shoppers seem undeterred.

>> think i'm spending a little more this year. >> i'm buying funky hats. >> ice skates. >> boots and jeans and i found them both. >> reporter: judging from the packed stores, christmas spirit seems to be higher this year too. and there's also more holiday optimism. the dow jones industrial average closed at a two-year peak before closing for the christmas holiday. but that trend did not continue in overseas trading this morning. >> i was out yesterday and i noticed everyone had shopping bags and i thought, wow. last-minute shopping, good for the receivers. >> retailers like macy's, toys "r" us are open right now. they've been open several hours nonstop for the christmas holidays. >> wait till the show ends, then go. we are sending out happy anniversary wishes this morning to one special couple. >> jack and ella essenberg are celebrating 77 years of wedded bliss. that's right. they got married back in 1933. they say it was love at first sight and it's still love after all these years. >> he is 98, she is 97. they celebrated the special day

sprang from the chimney. looked from the roof to the ground. stuck to its waist with its feet in the air was a strange purple creature with long purple hair. it rumbled and jumbled and spun from its lair. it picked up its hat and landed with care. the stranger wore a cap exactly as he. and had a merry old face full of laughter and glee. who are you, santa said to this stranger so weird. but the creature said words that got stuck in his beard. st. nick wrinkles his brow and shook his head. i can't understand a word you said. the creature turned a knob that was next to his ear and the words that came out were perfectly clear. i'm v-nick from venus and i lost my way when my hat blew off towards the bright milky way. i jumped to retrieve it and tripped on a star. looks like i tumbled from near to afar. santa said with a grin, i'm sorry you went into that awful spin. v-nick crossed his eyes and

pulled on his ear and held in his hands a large purple sphere. i come from a planet of the same magnitude but it takes 11 hours to cover my brood. i've only half done it and have much to do. how can i travel when i've lost my gazoo? gazoo, said st. nick in surprise. as laughter filled his merry old eyes. gazoo said v-nick as he drew in the snow, a picture of a walrus and eight tiny go. gazoo and gos. gos, what can they be? gos are reindeer from space that go around and around at a very quick pace. they each have ten legs that tickle the air and when you think they are here, they're already there. but my gos are gone and without my gazoo, my oh my what will i do? st. nicholas pulled on his beard and adjusted his sash, thought on the problem and then said in a flash, have no fear for when i am through i'll fly you to venus by reindeer express. i will deliver your toys in much time less. hop into my sleigh and hold on to your hat.

away, reindeer, onward and upward, how about that. so on that night they started anew. st. nick, v-nick and the reindeer crew. santa told v-nick about the good boys and girls. as v-nick assembled all those wonderful boy toys. st. nick offered candy that v-nick could chew and showed him the cities, the old and the new. when they delivered the last christmas toy st. nick pointed his sled toward the guiding star joy. more rapid than light they sped through the night and passed sputnik and beatnik and eagle in flight. st. nick and v-nick flew into star space and the whole universe smiled like a big happy face. christmas was everywhere that they could see. when they reached venus, santa laughed, could this be? the stars they all glistened and sparkled so bright and lit up the heavens with christmas tree lights. then in a twinkle of the great northern star all the spacenicks came from near and afar.

there was u-nick and plot-nick. there must have been thousands that popped from the sky. st. nicholas was amazed and astonished to see so many creatures dressed exactly as he. the colors of these spacenicks were grand to behold. some even flashed like sequins of gold. they had sacks of toys all different and gay, and many kinds of games for the children to play. there were moon dolls and boon dolls and hoggles from space and a different kind of candy with an all-around pace. the spacenicks worked quickly in venus' short night and christmas shined wondrously before morning's bright light. v-nick looked out on moon, stars and christmas' grand theme and wondered moreover, is this but a dream? with joy in his heart for this gift so dear, v-nick thanked his new friend, you saved christmas this year. so when they departed and said their good-byes, there were hugs of goodness and tears in their eyes. well, since that time many christmases went by, and santa

claus saw no more pie in the sky. that is, until fourscore and three years hence when a part of space fell through our ozone fence. the wind and the sea blew all that night. the raging storm was a terrible fright. the north pole blew over and the snow blew deep. all the candies and toys were thrown in a heap. everything was ruined or blown out of sight. nothing good happened and nothing was right. when suddenly a good thought sat on st. nick's head that filled him with hope and nothing to dread. look to the sky, to the heavens above. there are billions of stars that sparkle with love. st. nick looks to the bright milky way and saw a red rocket that looks like a sleigh. from out of the heavens and into the night came thousands of spacenicks via spaceflight. they brought all their toys and their candies delight and delivered the joys of christmas that night.

when they had finished they flew back to space and st. nick couldn't have had a happier face. he stood at the north pole that christmas night and looked to the sky that sparkled star bright. when out of the stellar pack there suddenly flew a walrus dressed in tuxedo blue. it was v-nick from venus in a world of go light and the spacenicks together who lit up the night, they sang in the heavens in voices of gold as star dust settled in words to behold, merry christmas good earth, have faith and good cheer. merry christmas, good earth, and happy new year. >> isn't that pretty cool? i love that every year. actually, the story was created by bill westerfield who works in the abc graphics department, does graphics for this show and several other shows on abc. >> yeah, he was responsible for all the illustrations you saw in the story. it was co-written. one interesting tidbit, i looked on the website, he says the way he decided to pursue this, he met the guy who wrote "where the wild things are." if you want to be successful you basically just have to work

if you've just woken up and noticed we're doing "insomniac theater," don't freak out, you haven't slept through christmas. we're just doing a special holiday edition. >> we fired up the fire and so vinita and i wanted to share some of our favorite christmas movies. mine without a doubt is "national lampoon's christmas vacation." a 1989 classic with chevy chase as clark griswald wanting to have a good old-fashioned fun christmas invites the family over. and he receives a fun surprise, hilarious surprise, when cousin eddie shows up. cousin eddie's wife tries to cook the turkey. didn't turn out so well. the hilarity ensues from there. let's listen. >> do you hear it?

it's a funny squeaky sound. >> you couldn't hear a dump truck driving through a nitroglycerine plant. >> shh! i hear it too. whoa! >> squirrel! it's obviously the outside tree was put inside, there was a squirrel inside. i give it 5 gingerbread mints. 5. i could have given it 15. it was the funniest christmas movie i think of all times. >> that little tidbit makes me want to watch it again, it's been awhile. >> oh, it's great. it's great. >> all right. i wanted to pick "it's a wonderful life" but i know you've all seen that. so i wanted to pick something that i love to watch during holidays. i picked 2003's "love, actually." if you haven't seen this movie, every time i go to the airport during the holidays i always think of it. i'm only going to say that. if you watch it you'll understand.

it basically follows the lives of eight very different couples dealing with their lives and love lives in sort of an interrelated way. this happens in the month before christmas in london. this is at a school talent show where some of the couples sort of converge. >> so, not quite as secret as we hoped. >> what do we do now? >> smile. bow. >> as the name implies this movie is great during the holidays because it really does make you appreciate the people that you love even more. i'm giving it 4 gingerbread men out of the possible 5. only because i feel like 5 has to make me cry and change my life. >> change your life. well, the "christmas vacation" changed my life. so that's why i gave it 5. both good movies, though.

well, traveling this christmas eve may cost you more than last year. gas prices have topped $3 a gallon for the first time in two years. >> it's especially surprising since gas prices usually drop this time of the year. linsey davis reports from new york. >> reporter: getting to grandma's house for the holidays has never been so expensive. >> on a national average basis we have never paid $3 a gallon on christmas eve or a christmas. >> reporter: according to aaa, the national average for a regular gallon of gas crossed the milestone $3 mark for the first time in more than two years. that's up more than 13% from last december, and 76% higher from december 2008. >> this is the only time we've really traveled. just can't afford gas and everything else. just makes it ridiculous. >> we want to travel, we know we've got to pay for it. >> reporter: the rising gas prices is most apparent on the west coast and in the northeast. drivers can largely blame the rise in crude oil which passed the $90 a barrel mark. >> it's very much a world demand

phenomenon. and demand worldwide is growing at a very healthy pace. >> reporter: while the increase in oil prices is an encouraging sign of growth, it could also slow down the recovery. but it doesn't so many to be putting the brakes on holiday travel. >> during challenging economic times it's a battle between the heart strings and the purse strings and usually the heart strings will win out. >> reporter: aaa estimates more than 92 million people will travel 50 miles or more from home over the holidays. that's more than a 3% increase from last year. nine of ten of them will travel by car. almost 3 million will fly. a wintry mix is moving through the plains and snow and ice are expected to wallop the nation's heartland. that same storm will arrive in the mid-atlantic just in time for a white christmas. the real travel nightmare may come the day after christmas. a major snow storm is expected to develop off the east coast, so the trip back home for millions could be a mess. linsey davis, abc news, new

york. >> all right. it's going to cost you a lot if you're driving. what's the weather going to be like? here's your kri mass christmas eve forecast. several inches of snow in minneapolis, chicago, st. louis, and kansas city. spreading later into the ohio and tennessee valleys. heavy rain and flooding in dallas, houston, little rock and shreveport. showers from seattle to portland. >> mostly 40s in the rockies from billings to colorado springs. a snowy 32 in omaha, 29 in detroit. 36 here in new york. 50 in atlanta. and 71 in miami. there is a new security alert for holiday air travelers this morning. airport screeners will be paying extra attention to thermos-type insulated beverage containers. agents say they have heard of a potential terror tactic but nothing specific. passengers are warned there could be a slow-down at checkpoints because bags with those containers will now be closely inspected. an airline pilot who exposed a flaw in airport security is now in hot water. his cell phone video shows how some airport workers can skip those security screenings

necessary for all passengers and crew members. now that pilot is in trouble. as abc's david muir reports. >> reporter: the 50-year-old california pilot, who's asked that his name and his airline not been identified took these pictures with his cell phone. >> airport security is kind of a farce. it's only smoke and mirrors. >> reporter: to make his case he compared this security checkpoint, the one we all go through -- pilots and crew included -- with this one. for the airport ground crew. >> this is their screen. as you can see, there's only a card slide and one door. >> reporter: that system, a swipe of an i.d. card, has been reported on before in the wake of 9/11 and it continues. this pilot was hoping his videos would call attention to what he considers a huge disparity in security. three days after he posted them, four federal air marshals showed up at his house. they confiscated his federally issued gun. he decided to explain himself to

us and to our abc affiliate kxtv. >> i just saw the whole fallacy of the whole system. people don't understand that when they walk through, that tsa checkpoint, all those people that you see outside, all the ground personnel, get virtually nothing. >> reporter: aviation expert john nance is not comfortable with what this pilot did. i know you think the judgment here might be questionable but as a pilot yourself can you sense a similar frustration when you see the disparity in security? >> these are folks who ask just swipe a card and go in and out. on the other side of it what we don't want to do is wave a red flag to our enemies and say, hey, take a look at this vulnerability. >> reporter: the pilot himself is not in trouble with his own airline but the tsa would only say this, that the pilot in question must be able to maintain sensitive security information, which is why they're now investigating. and as for those ground workers, the tsa says, quote, they are confident in the tools the airport has implemented saying there are security measures in place, both seen and unseen. david muir, abc news, new york.

security agents are paying extra attention to passenger trains this holiday. federal agents and other law enforcement have been very visible in train stations, including this one in atlanta. they say it's not in response to any specific threat but part of a national effort to make travel safer. italian police may have an important clue after the mail bomb sent to two embassies in rome. a claim by anarchists was found in a small box near one of the wounded employees. yesterday's attacks in rome were similar to a wave of mail bombs that targeted several embassies in athens last month. we have now learned toyota has paid a southern california family $10 million to settle claims after a stuck accelerator accident. a passenger called 911 just before last year's crash in san diego. historic recalls followed that crash. four people were killed in the accident. the automaker had tried to keep the financial settlement a secret. the lawyers for the family killed in the runaway lexus now confirm that figure. a star woman's basketball player has tested positive for a banned substance while playing

in turkey. diana taurasi's attorney says the substance was a mild stimulant, not a steroid or recreational drug. he expects she will be cleared in another test. taurasi plays for the wnba. and led the uconn huskies, the u.s. national team and the u.s. olympic team to championships. congressional lawmakers are home for the holidays this morning after wrapping up the lame duck session. >> they may be enjoying a little more respect from constituents after some rather major accomplishments. t.j. winick has details. good morning, t.j. >> reporter: good morning, mike and vinita. they may have had record low approval ratings but the senators and representatives on capitol hill the past two years do have a long list of accomplishments. >> the second session of the 111th congress adjourned sine die. >> reporter: the 111th congress may be gone, but they won't soon be forgotten. it passed more significant legislation than any since lbj's great society in the mid 1960s. among its accomplishments, an

$814 billion economic stimulus. a massive health care overhaul. new regulations on wall street trading. and consumer credit cards. then in this month's lame duck session alone, an extension of the bush tax cuts. a nuclear arms treaty. and a repeal of the don't ask, don't tell policy on gays in the military. >> if there's any lesson to draw from these past few weeks it's that we are not doomed to endless gridlock. >> reporter: there was also plenty of controversy. the filibuster threats, chaotic town hall meetings, the emergence of the tea party. and many who will take office in january campaigned on the promise they would try and repeal some of the laws passed during this historic session. still, the president is enjoying a big bump. according to a new cnn poll, 56% of americans approve of the way the president handled the issues that congress considered during its lame duck session. mike and vinita? >> thank you, t.j. prices at the pump may be going through the roof but some drivers in south carolina got a
