one room. john alston talks with investigators and neighbors about the blast of gunfire yesterday at a city housing project, one with a reputation for violence. >> reporter: whatever happened inside this two bedroom unit at the triangle court apartment complex, it was excessively violent a close-range gun battle involving three men, numerous shots and more than a few weapons. residents here have seen their share of crime were taken back. >> it's crazy. i'm tired of it, i'm sick of it. >> 36-year-old michael a anderson was murdered. and 19-year-old donte de elony and a 28-year-old man. they both stopped by for some unknown reason. >> we have him in for interrogation and interview and he's cooperating. we aren't looking for any other suspects. the entire crime scene is in one room in the house. >> there were children's bunk beds in one room but no kids

were home at the time >> i know the little boy that lives there. mark has played with him on a couple of occasions. >> richmond's triangle neighborhood has endured violent crime over the years. just outside the apartment where the homicide took place there was evidence of suspected drug use and a bullet showcasing not connected to this shooting. police say they are frustrated because things were getting better. >> we really do have a sense of community. the lighting is better, the tenants are no longer able to be able to be involved in criminal activity so we have seen a big reduction in violence. when things like this happen, we have to determine why. >> ms. turner doesn't think the neighborhood has gotten safer. >> it happened here, and i want to move. i don't feel secure in my area place of living, and that's about it. >> reporter: police are still trying to come up with a motive in this case. as for the man being questioned who was here at the scene, they say he is a person of interest

and in the a suspect at this point. in richmond, john alston, abc7 news. >> a sacramento-based c-130 coast guard crew will conduct another search today for seven people still missing from a chartered fishing boat that cap sized and sank in mexican waters on july 3rd. the ship was knocked over by a huge wave. abc7 talks with one survivor who found himself floating in the sea of cortes. >> charles is used facing danger. he's former oakland police lewd. owes now a chief of police for the contra college college. he was onboard the eric. >> it was like the titanic. i felt this feeling of abandon meant. >> the 57-year-old and several

others were in the dark water confused and squared. charles didn't have a life vest. instead he held on to an ice cooler. dozens floated nearby. finally a fellow fisherman, glen wong, offered his. wong's brother brian, is still missing. >> he saved my life. >> but then the group separated. carroll spent nearly 15 hours alone. he eventually swam to an island where local fishermen found him and another survivor. this is video of charles in mexico back on land. in the meantime the search for seven others who are still missing continues today. >> do you think they are still alive? >> i hope so. >> the coast guard has agreed to keep looking at least until tuesday. since the accident survivors have been found in the water and on nearby islands. >> if i made it to an island they can. i hope they are somewhere on one of those islands out there waiting to be helped.

>> don lee's family is trying to stay farm but they are having a hard time. they are bracing themselves for the worse. they would like a specialized dive team get involved and search the sunken ship. >> their main goal is to get the dive done, get the closer and whether my father in law their father is down there. if that's the case, bring him home. >> the secretary of tourism for baja, california said a deep water dive team from hawaii is willing to help. abc7 news. >> a five team could last two weeks and cost $100,000 in a private company takes on the job. the fishing boat is thought to be at a depth of 200 to 300 feast that would require what is known as a mixed gas dive where divers need a special mixture of oxygen helium and nitrogen. each dive could take a half-hour to reach the boat and a full hour or more to return to the

surface. >> you have the problem of getting all the equipment there to do it, then you have the problem of doing the actual dive and the penetration is probably the most dangerous thing is you don't know how the wreck is, you don't know if it is sitting upright, sup side down. >> and divers could only spend 15 minutes at a time searching inside the sunk epidemic ship. cal fire crews of battling a wildfire north of sacramento this morning in the foothills. high winds snapped a power line around 4:00 yesterday afternoon and caused the flames to quickly spread out of control. this video shot last night shows calmer winds after sunset. the fire is burning near the town of smartville. so far no homes are threatened. crews have cut containment lines around 25% of the fire. a tsunami alert has been lifted after yet another major

earthquake in japan last night. the 7.0 quake shook japan's northeastern coast. it's the same area designate bid a quake and killer tsunami four months ago. the epicenter in the pacific ocean, 131 miles east of sundai, the area hit hardest in the march quake. dozens of aftershocks have rocked the country since that disaster >> we are hours away from crucial debt ceiling negotiationings on capitol hill. they have rejected president obama's compromise offer to make major cuts to the ned federal government and social services in exchange for tax heights. boehner reportedly made his decision of a speaking to president obama by phone yesterday afternoon. the president offered to put social security medicare and medicaid cuts on the table in exchange for a tax hike of roughly $100 billion per year over ten years. democratic and gop leadership

>> this morning avon walk for breast cancer participants are walking, and closing ceremonies are this afternoon at for the -- ft. mason. last night the event was kicked off in san francisco. each participant is walking up to 39 and a half miles all to support the ongoing search for a cure. they raised more than $4.5 million. all the funds goes to local breast cancer organizations. since its launch in 2003, the avon foundation has raised more

yesterday. 5 degrees cooler in napa. notice loskota6 degrees cooler. we are looking at patchy drizzle at the coast and temperatures in the low 80s today inland. that persistent onshore blow. below normal temperatures right on through thursday. so the fog, it will eventually make its way across the bay. but we do have a north-south component. the gradient will be pushing the fog away from the marine coast so temperatures there should be warmer. mid-and up he were 70s. elsewhere widespread 60s across the bay and a few 80s inland. if you like it cool another comfortable day. sacramento down to 86 degrees today. still in the 90s in the san joaquin valley. and 82 in the southern sierra. we will be looking at still several more days of cool air due to a persistent trough to the north and west of us.

>> the san francisco police union accepted a deal that allows officetories get 5% pay raise that they agreed to earlier to avoid paves. they agreed to pay 3% more into their pension fund sooner rather than later to help the budget. it was worked by by mayor ed lee with union leaders. the pension fund may ultimately be died by san francisco voters who are likely to face two competing ballot measures in november. some landlords in began are concerned about a proposal they say would say would force them to rent to ex-con's. the city's human rights commission wants to change city codes as a way to keep former offenders on track. >> he works in a garden outside san bruno jail. he was just released from the

facility back in january and now desperately needs housing but says no one will rent to him. >> they want the police report and it's just hard. you have a felony and they just don't want to. i never get a call back >> the city's human rights commission wants to add people like thomas, those with arrest or conviction records to categories like race, religion and sexual orientation when it comes to prohibiting housing discrimination. >> what we are doing is giving people a chance to turn their lives around. >> theresa sparks is executive director of the commission. >> we around going to force something down someone's throat if there is really a legitimate reason but just because they were arrested five years ago or ten years ago and if they haven't done it again, yeah that's not a reason not to renato them. >> the new proposal has the support of the sheriff's department d. a. and others who show studies show stable housing

website. carolyn tyler abc7 news. >> all right. dozens of guns are now off the streets of pal at -- palo alto this morning. dozens of handguns and rifles were turned in yesterday during the city's gun buy-back program. each was exchanged for a $100 cash card. the buy-back program was established after a toddler was accidentally shot to death by a twelve-year-old boy who found a gun in a garage. >> it's a safety issue. chances of you injuring yourself with a weapon or someone in your family with a weapon you had stored are greater than you using using it for self-defense. >> 137 guns have been turned in since the program began back in 2009. at-risk teens are turning from tagging build to go making art in san jose. the project creates murals in areas where graffiti is a problem. it gives kids something positive to do and helps create pride in

their neighborhood. organizers also say many kids who join the project end up turning in their gang colors. santa clara's city manager is recommending the city deny a request by former 49ers great joe montana to get the first shot at developing city-owned property next to the planned 49er's stadium. montana and former 49ers owner want 18 months of exclusive first rights to negotiate a lease with the city. they want to build a hotel, sports bar and retail project that they announced back in december. but our media partner, the san jose mercury news reports the city manager sent a memo to the council fry that recommends giving everybody a chance to bid on the seven acre site. and counties are given a chance to join the newly formed energy authority at no cost if they act before november 7th. it is designed to compete with

the weather should be pretty good for that sort of thing. >> yeah. you will need the jacket. it will be gray throughout much of the morning but then we will see some sunshine. more widespread 60s and 70s this afternoon as the 80s go a little further to the east. in fact, we are looking at that stratus filling in right now. here's the look from emeryville. it's at about 2,000 feet, the deck of low clouds. it will continue to retreat throughout the day today. it will peel back. we look at numbers anywhere from about 5 degrees below the average today. 52 fremont. we are looking at numbers compared to yesterday cooler, about 8 degrees cooler this morning in redwood city with 6 degrees cooler and 5 degrees cooler in napa. patchy fog in santa rosa. we are looking at low clouds the coastal drizzle perhaps and cooler temperatures mainly inland. you have experience the cool down already with the breezy,

westerly winds. once again today at the coast it will be kind of gusty at times with those winds increasing. but we are looking at the clearing to start from the north today. in fact with that the numbers should stay in the mid-and upper 70s the further north you get. elsewhere, still only in the low to mid-60s across the bay and the inland east bay. it will be cool and the cooler air finally pushing through the delta and in the valley just 86 in sacramento today. the fog along the coast. we should see afternoon clearing here. 81 in los angeles. but it will be patchy. so you will notice that the temperatures still only in the upper 50s so that's not bogey to change at the coast. what continues to change is the depth of the marine layer in the days ahead due to the upper level trough. it continues to dig to the south. as it does, the low clouds and fog will be building from 2,000 feet to 3000 feet in the next couple of days and maxing out at about thursday where temperatures will be about 10 degrees cooler than average
