remember we talked about this a few days ago, alex trebek and that scene where he hurt himself chasing a burglar out of his room in a san francisco hotel room. that woman has come out and says, i'm not a thief, i'm actually a prostitute. which makes me feel so much better about the story. apparently she's 56 years old, this woman. and she says she's pleaded not guilty in the case. and even one of the -- a spokesman for the public defender's office says mr. trebek never saw her in his room. when she was caught in the hallway she had no stolen property on her. said she was not in the hotel to steal anything, she was there to meet an unnamed john to do her line of work. get this, she has three previous convictions for burglarizing hotels in san francisco. so you don't know really what to believe. she's saying, i'm not a thief. >> i don't even know who is he, she says. >> honest prostitute. >> bert and ernie. a lot of people are trying to make them a couple. there's a whole internet push to get bert and ernie married. two of the contenders at last night's debate went at each other pretty hard. while front-runner mitt romney avoided clashing with his rivals congresswoman michele bachmann and former governor tim pawlenty showed up ready to fight. >> when you were governor in minnesota, you implemented cap and trade in our state. you said the era of small government was over. thatatounds a lot more like barack obama, if you ask me. >> in congress, her record of accomplishment and results is nonexistent. that's not going to be good enough for our candidate for president of the united states. >> when it came to health care, i brought tens of thousands of americans to washington to fight the unconstitutional individual mandate. >> if that's your view of effective leadership with results, please stop because you're killing us. >> reporter: the candidates pretty much took over the debate. much to o e frustration of the other candidates. >> i understand you have the next question -- >> i haven't had a chance to say a whole lot. >> reporter: bachmann and pawlenty both hope to emerge as an alternative to romney. for his part the former massachusetts governor set his sights on president obama.

>> i was fortunate enough to be a governor that got an increase in the credit rating of my state. at the same time we got a president who got a decrease in the credit rating of our nation. >> reporter: the two-hour fox news iowa gop debate featured eight republican presidential hopefuls who say they can beat president obama and fix the economy. >> i'd love to see the rest of tonight's debate asking us about what we would do to lead an america whose president has failed to lead, instead of >> reporter: texas governor rick perry did not take part in last night's debate. he's going to enter the race at an event saturday in south carolina. rob and tanya. >> the gloves are definitely off now. >> going at it last night. getting a little feisty as things officially kick off there. perry's entry in the race could be very, very interesting. one, because of his religious roots. two, because he's going to tout his record as creating a lot of jobs as governor of texas as the country was losing jobs. >> he did cut taxes which is another big gop theme. >> we'll see. official announcement saturday.

obviously some party crashers in iowa, too, sarah palin's bus tour going up there again, the announcement from perry's spokesman came out hours before that debate last night. all getting interesting. >> it will be interesting to see what happens with sarah palin, whether she jumps in or not. our question of the day, who do you think won the gop debate? visit our fan page and let us know what you think. more political news now, president obama's plan to vacation next week is s ising some eyebrows. critics say that with the economy still in crisis, the president and his family should not be rubbing elbows with the wealthy on martha's vineyard. abc's sharyn alfonsi reports. >> reporter: it is august. but with wall street's wild mood swings and the economy stalled, should president obama really be headed to martha's vineyard for vacation? >> i don't think americans out there would begrudge that notion that the president would spend some time with his family. >> reporter: but do we? >> absolutely. >> reporter: president bush was vacationing on his ranch at crawford as hurricane katrina devastated the gulf coast. >> we need somebody to come into

the city and help us. >> reporter: but it wasn't until two days later that the president canceled his vacation. and he didn't see the disaster zone until four days later, flying over on his way back to washington. critics say it was a tipping point for his presidency. and his father didn't do himself any favors when the then-president, knee-deep in recession, was photographed cruising around on a pleasure boat off kennebunkport. his approval rating tumbled. then there was president clinton. >> indeed, i did have a relationship with miss lewinski that was not appropriate. >> reporter: a day after shocking the nation, admitting to an affair, he left for martha's vineyard too. chelsea famously walking between her parents as they were whisked away from washington. but it was president reagan who may have perfected the vacation during tough times. he took a month's vacation during a recession to his ranch in santa barbara and made sure that the press only saw him one time during that entire month outside of his ranch when he was signing a recovery bill. sharyn alfonsi, abc news, new york.

three people in north carolina have been arrested for ballot fraud in the 2008 election. investigators said three suspects cast early ballots in the presidential election and then voted again on election day. one of the suspects said there was no intent to commit fraud. investigators found no evidence of a wider conspiracy. the riots in england have claimed another life. a 68-year-old man who was attacked monday has died from his injuries. police meanwhile remain vigilant overnight. the streets were pretty quiet. police may soon get new powers to order young people to remove their hoods, to evict troublemakers from public housing and to disable instant messaging systems. britain is looking to the u.s. for solutions and may hire william bratton who headed police departments in boston, new york and l.a. to eventually lead scotland yard. interesting development. >> definitely interesting. the gang culture, how that's similar there as here. the mother of the so-called dougherty gang said she's devastated by all that's

happened but she's trying to be strong for her other family members. >> the three siblings are facing attempted murder charges after their week-long crime spree came to a dramatic end. abc's diana alvear has the latest. good morning, diana. >> reporter: rob and tanya, good morning. for the first time we're learning exactly how it all went down in colorado. the take-down of the dangerous dougherty gang, including what lee grace had to say to investigators about who pulled the trigger when it came to shots fired at officers. dangerous to the end, the dougherty siblings were unwilling to give up without a fight. unloading round after round at pursuing officers. according to the arrest affidavit, lee grace dougherty told colorado investigators, we weren't trying to hurt anyone, we just wanted them to get back. when their car encountered stop sticks they spun out and crashed onto a guardrail. officers quickly arrested dylan dougherty stanley. but lee grace and younger brother ryan made a run for it. lee grace didn't get far.

>> she had an automatic pistol and she was con front by a police officer. she turned and made an attempt chamber a round and point it at the officer. >> reporter: that's when the officer shot lee grace in the leg, stopping her in her tracks. ryan ran toward a construction site. >> he turned around and pointed his fingers at us like he had a gun, told us to get back. >> grabbed him, he put up a fight. he flung around and i grabbed him again and yanked him down to the ground. and he just said "i give up." >> reporter: when questioned about who shot at officers, lee grace said she didn't shoot at any cop in the state of colorado. she also confirmed ryan had been driving, saying, a person can't drive and shoot a gun at the same time. while that left dylan as the trigger man, all three have been charged with attempted murder in the first degree. and all three have been assigned a $1 million bond each by a colorado judge. they're going to be in court next monday, and of course other charges will be filed in georgia and florida.

finally, it's finally, it's time for "insomniac theater." if you're wondering what new movie to head out and see this weekend we've got some early reviews for you. >> t that's right, rob will hava look at the comedy "in 30 minutes or less" in a moment. we're going to start with the best-selling book turned movie "the help." this is a movie that's getting a lot of good reviews. it stars emma stone as skeeter. she is a girl from the south who just graduated from college in mississippi in the '60s. and while all her friends are getting married and having kid emma's character skeeter wants something a little different. she wants to be a writer but of course she needs some clips to get a job as a writer. she decides she's going to write a book about what it's like to

work for these white families. write from the perspective of the help. here's a scene where she's trying to get started. >> i want to interview you about what it's like to work as a maid. i'd like to do a book of interviews about working for white families. show what it's like to work for, say, elizabeth. >> you know what she'd do to me if she knows i'm telling stories on her? >> i was thinking we wouldn't have to tell her. the other maids would have to keep it secret too. >> the other maids? >> the reviews have been largely thumbs up. movie. viola davis is getting huge buzz. so is emma stone. who's a big up and coming actress. >> looks like a winner, good for them. maybe not so for my movie, "30 minutes or less." basically it's about a pizza guy played by jesse eisenberg who gave that brilliant performance in "the social network," the facebook movie. he plays a pizza guy who gets kidnapped, gets strapped to a

bomb and he's told he has ten hours to rob a bank. they hire an assassin to kill one of their dads to get his lottery money, they want to use that money to open up a brothel/tanning salon. this is a family movie. this mimics a real-life event in pennsylvania where this happened to a real pizza guy who was killed. take a listen. >> what do you want? we have nothing left to say to each other. >> last night two guys in masks jumped me and strapped a bomb to my chest and now i have less than nine hours to rob a bank. >> you're hysterical. great joke. i'm going to go back to my class. >> is that thing real? >> two guys did this to me and if i don't rob a bank in time this thing is going to blow. >> and your first thought was to come to a school filled with young children. >> kind of a dark comedy here. because like i said,,his mimics a real-life eventrom 2003 where a real pizza guy was strapped to a bomb and killed. >> a little controversy here. >> not getting great reviews. they called it brainless, full of stupidity. racist and homophobic slurs. one review said it should have been -- the movie itself should have been 30 minutes. less than 30 minutes. >> maybe a pass. >> we'll see. kind of dark here.

if you have a chance. of course the presidential election could well be determined by the economy. but that could be pretty tough to predict if this week's stock market results are any indication. >> today could be another wild one and abc's scott goldberg is tracking all this unpredictability. good morning, scott. >> reporter: good morning, rob and tanya. what a difference every day makes. for the second time this week the stock market had a phenomenal day right after it had a phenomenally bad day. the only thing we can predict is that trading will stop for the weekend. on wall street, it's been one of those not sure if you should laugh or cry kind of weeks. the dow flopped, flipped, flopped again, then flipped back into positive territory, making four straight days of swings of 400 points or higher. president obama said americans are right to worry about the fluctuations, but -- >> there is nothing wrong with our coununy. there is something wrong with our politics.

>> reporter: the good news came after unemployment claims in the u.s. fell for the sixth straight week. the bad news has come largely from europe, where rumors of a credit downgrade in france have people worried that country's banks might fail. >> the line of the day was, do you know how to say bear stearns in french? >> reporter: a lot of it might sound familiar but experts see differences between the crisis of 2008 and the concerns of 2011. >> unlike 2008, the system is functioning. the plumbing of the system is fine. in 2008 the plumbing got clogged and therefore the system got very near to total breakdown. >> reporter: what's different this time, banks aren't t weigh down by toxic mortgages and american banks have much higher reserves. one thing 2011 has in common with 2008 is the stock market's radical swings. even then the dow didn't have four straight days moving 400 points or more. that is a new record. rob and tanya? >> radical swings for sure. thanks a lot, scott. here's one way to hedge your bets in a wild economy. print your own money. police in lima, peru, raided a printing company and found $2

million in counterfeit u.s. currency. they also found about $22,000 worth of fake peruvian money. police in peru have seized about $3 million in counterfeit money from the u.s. this year. they say it's printed there and then sent to the u.s. >> what a bust. the berry industry is again under fire for violating child labor laws. two years after an abc investigation showed small children toiling in the fields, this time growers were fined for using little boys and girls to pick strawberries. abc's brian ross investigates. >> reporter: it's an ugly secret in american agriculture. out of sight, far from the main roads, children as young as 5-year-old suli working in the country's fruit and vegetable fields. we found suli and her 7 and 8-year-old brothers during an abc news investigation in the blueberry y elds of large commercial farms in michigan. it's legal for young children to work on the family farm but this is much different. >> every year there are children who die in agriculture. these kids, they're working with

sharp knives, sharp tools, heavy machinery, there are tractor rollovers. >> reporter: now as part of a promised crackdown, in the wake of our investigation two years ago, the department of labor has gone after three commercial strawberry-growing operations in washington state. >> they're really picking adult quantities of berries, up to 200 pounds of berries a day. they're stooping over to pick those berries. we hear these kids complaining about backaches. sometimes to the extent that they can't sleep at night. we see pretty severe bruises on little knees. >> reporter: even more dangerous is repeated exposure to the pesticides used in the agricultural industry. something 8-year-old edgar was well aware of when we met him in 2009. >> they could poison themselves because it's too dangerous for them, or sometimes they can go to the hospital. >> reporter: there's no way to know just how much of the country's fruits and vegetables are picked by children. but advocates say low, by the bucket pay often forces families
