>> announcer: right now abc7 news begins with breaking news. >> >> you are looking live at the bay bridge. on the lower deck it is a mess now after two police pursuits, crashes, lane closures and huge delays. >> do we need more up there? terry mcsweeney is live from the bay bridge with what is happening right now. we see intermittent slow downs. >> reporter: yeah, just got off the phone with the san francisco, chp they say the earliest possible time
these three closed right lanes eastbound direction are going to be reopening is 6:30 that is the absolute ideal earliest that could happen. until then you can see what the situation is. two lanes of traffic moving very, very slowly. again, this is not the direction we expect traffic this time of day eastbound away from everything. if you are looking for a silver lining this is not westbound this is eastbound. all began 5:35 in morning. take a look at pictures what is like up at the crash scene. chp says an officer started following a car who was going at a height rate of speed eastbound lanes followed him through the s-curve, don't know if the s-curves played a role in this. high rate of speed in the lanes where the limit is 40, you know how dangerous these turns are. he follows the car, the car crashes at some point we are not sure how it happen chp pulls his weapon and fires at
least one shot, does not hit the suspect. the suspect is injured, because he's in the car that crashed, he suffered minor injuries taken to the hospital, was not hit by that bullet. i'm also told the san francisco police department is the agency that is going to be investigating. they are having an outside agency take care of this situation. again, back out here, you see the mess, one hour after that initial situation there was another high speed chase it went from oakland into san francisco back over this way and i'm told that there was an arrest of two people in that separate and completely different situation. one person arrested here he's in the hospital. two arrested later after another high speed chase on this same bay bridge. very busy morning out here. it is going to be busy like this for at least another 30 minutes or so 6:30 is the
earliest they can have these three lanes reopened as the investigation continues up there where this came to a conclusion shortly after 2:00 this morning. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. >> we know what the implication is if the earliest is 6:30. >> right we want to talk to frances. i've been keeping track of the drive times. the delays have grown from 20 minutes to 40 minutes sometimes an hour heading across the lower deck of the bay bridge with lane closures still in place, three right lanes you can see from terry's live shot traffic barely moving. he's sayg maybe lanes will be open at 6:30 but take longer. there's normally caltrans roadwork scheduled to lanes from 7:00 in the morning to 1:45 without the clearing we might see the back-up through the morning.

80s. new this morning from contra costa county, firefighters worked overnight to extinguish a grass fire and fireworks are to blame. amy hollyfield joins us live from oakley. >> reporter: they've got limited resources so they were nervous when the call came in. they have nine firefighters on a shift to cover 250 square miles. when firefighters in oakley go the call last night, the firefighters here put out a call for help. the contra costa county fire district rushed over to help these firefighters tackle this grass fire that started at about 10:30 last night. witnesses told firefighters they saw someone lighting fireworks in the area. they do think that's what started this one. the fire threatened 12 homes and had plenty of debris to burn in this field. firefighters definitely felt like it was important to get help and get this out quickly.
>> large grass fire like this tends to belabor intensive. there's a lot of burning piles of rubbish and trash in this field. unfortunately, due to our budget our prevention program which does not exist any more has not been able to mitigate this hazard. >> reporter: they got it out in an hour, no one was hurt, no buildings were burned many east contra costa county fire district just closed half of its stations because hit an eight million dollar budget shortfall. voters rejected a parcel tax that would have helped fund the fire stations so they had to close three and lay-off 15 firefighters. there's frustration out here among the firefighters. they were especially frustrated to hear fireworks started this fire last night. they did get the job didn't. they did it with the help from another agency. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. 6:06 now. despite sweltering heat thousands turned out in the

bay 90s inland coast mid 60s. update with frances. good morning. still massive delays heading out of san francisco through the lower deck of the bay bridge with only two lanes open right now it even looks like they are squeezing traffic into one lane. we've seen delays grow to about an hour right now heading out of san francisco into oakland if you are taking the bay bridge westbound traffic still fine, no delays at the toll, you can see these headlights, traffic is jut kind of trickling through eastbound. you might want to head over to the san mateo bridge and save yourself extra time, 101 is good getting there, 880 fine as well eastbound traffic light for headlights. you can use the waze traffic app to help you find the best detour. still ahead, mortgage meltdown. the company blamed for its part in the housing crisis is

we are about two to four degrees warmer tomorrow again saturday and sunday look at that heat away from the beaches, in the mid 60s, mid 80s to mid 90s bay and inland next week. i heard i missed the temptations dance, maybe you will do a repeat for news your next report. all right, if you are just joining us, we've been following big delays on the lower deck of the bay bridge all morning due to earlier police chases. terry mcsweeney is live at the scene he will bring another report. traffic is jammed, we are talking hour delays right now heading eastbound out of san francisco towards the s-curve, where at one point all lanes temporarily blocked now it looks like they are down to one lane you see traffic merging into that far ft lane. with the waze traffic app you see it is jammed four miles an hour as you head getting on the lower deck of the bay bridge out of san francisco. right as you get past that s-curve, it moves at around 34
miles an hour. your alternate this morning is bart, they are reporting no delays. or you can consider heading down 101 no problems. we have holiday light traffic elsewhere. then once you get to the san mateo bridge it is easy ride eastbound into hayward westbound delay-free at this point. if you are taking the bay bridge in the normal westbound commute direction now no major delays just minor back-up for some of the cash paying lanes. 6:20. also ahead, former bay area athlete goes hollywood. weeks after his wedding to his supermodel wife, actor

she is right there, still hasn't moved much in the past 22 minutes. your alternate is bart or the san mateo bridge traffic is flowing well there eastbound direction for headlights. terry mcsweeney is live at the scene and he's been keeping track of this back-up you can see down to one lane eastbound. he's going to tell us how it started and maybe when it is expected to clear. >> reporter: down to one lane latest we are getting from the chp is all lanes right now estimated all lanes won't be reopening until 10:30 morning. half an hour ago the chp was telling me they would reopen now. obviously that is not happening. they have it down to one lane eastbound and you can see the kind of traffic how bad it is out here eastbound direction the direction you don't expect trouble this time of day. look at pictures at now started.
chp telling me 1:30 this morning theres way high speed chase eastbound chp after a cargoes into the s-curve just comes out of -- out of the s-curve and crashes. after the crash for some reason, we are not getting details on this, chp officer pulled his gun and fired did not hit him suspect was injured from the car crash not bullets he was not hit by bullets fired by the chp taken to the hospital and he is under arrest. he's got minor injuries. the investigation conducted by the san francisco police department. that was 1:30 a hour after that, a separate incident, high speed chase coming from oakland into san francisco and then back out again that ended with two people being arrested separate incident, no gun fire there just two people arrested for we don't know yet because that is an -- because that is
oakland police jurisdiction this crash will be investigated by san francisco chp was doing they would like an outside agency to take a look. latest we are getting is this is what it is going to be looking like owes on the bay bridge out of the tunnel here at the s-curve you can see the "s" here going to be going on like this most of the morning until 10:30 they are saying latest information we have, chp all lanes reopening around 10:30 they are saying. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. >> we will keep you posted all morning with terry and frances, thank you. 6:33. also new, from eastern contra costa county, firefighters are keeping an eye on a neighborhood in oakley after a grass fire was ignited by illegal fireworks. the fire started 10:30 last night a field behind homes. the east contra costa fire district had to call for help
from neighboring jurisdictions to contain the blaze. recent budget cuts reduced the number of fire stations in the district from six to three. in oakland, no major fires were set from the thousands of illegal fireworks set off last night. we should find out later today if anyone was arrested. woo we saw and heard a flurry of commercial -- we saw and heard a flurry of commercial grade fireworks, accompanied by explosions of m-80s, and bottle rockets police were on the lookout for illegal gunshots they used their spot shot ter that can tell the difference between -- between fireworks and gunshots. more than 200,000 people were treated to an amazing fireworks display over the waterfront in san francisco last night. there was some fog as mike

issue and a team is trying to figure out what happened. new this morning from east palo alto, a man in police custody accused of stabbing another man in the neck. it happened after 10:00 last night on university avenue. an ambulance rushed the victim to the hospital. no word on his condition right now. 30-year-old man is under arrest. if you have any information on this stabbing, you are asked to contact east palo alto police. new this morning from petaluma, 19-year-old in the hospital after falling from an elementary school roof in sonoma county. the fire department says it happened at 12:30 this morning,. officials say when paramedics arrived the man was unconscious and having trouble breathing. he was taken to a santa rosa hospital. his condition is not being released. police are investigating an apparent hit-and-run accident in oakland it happened around 9:30 last night on international boulevard near 81st avenue. this was the scene from sky 7
hd. firefighters found the body of a pedestrian on the street and then handed the case over to police. no word on the identity of the victim or a description of the vehicle involved. this afternoon, a 41-year-old man scheduled to make his first court appearance in a fatal hit-and-run crash of a teen. investigators say michael harmon's white pick-up truck crashed into the 17-year-old's red pick-up after midnight monday on lakeview highway in people. they say harmon left the scene and turned himself in, 10 hours later. harmon claims the victim is to blame for the crash. investigators say his story doesn't match the evidence from the crash scene. 6:37. time to take a look at forecast for today. by the way cue s to mike for his forecast yesterday for the fireworks. -- kudoes to make for his forecast yesterday for the fireworks. 82 minutes because of low clouds, oakland and san jose on time.

been reported dead. desperate search for passengers is now underway. we will bring you the latest on the rescue, next on gma. jury deliberations resumed if in the prespeeding trial of william lynch. his supporters rallied in front of the courthouse tuesday when the jury began its first full day of deliberations he's accused of pummeling gerald lindner with his fists two years ago. lynch claims the retired priest molested him as a child. lynch faces felony assault and elder abuse. his attorneys argued at most attack was a misdemeanor assault and they are hoping for an acquittal. police in britain say few men and one woman are under arrest for possible terrorist attack officers took the men and woman into custody this morning. the suspects range in age between 18 and 30. few details on the possible terror plot are being released. investigators are saying the possible plot is not linked to
the upcoming summer olympic games in london. back to work this morning for president obama and the man who wants to replace the white house. katie marzullo is live in the breaking news center. >> reporter: let's start with president obama, kicking off a campaign bus tour today. we have a live picture in maryland andrews -- air force one is ready to go. you can see his limousine pulling up just now. once he gets on the plane he's flying to owe oath first of a two-day, two-state tour with stops in ohio and pennsylvania. he will be defending his economic policies and auto industry bailout. not far behind two high profile republicans, governor jindal and former minnesota governor pawlenty. they will be offering voters in some of those same towns a rebuttal to the president's message. mitt romney seems to have taken a stand on the new health care law.
there's been a debate over whether the insurance mandate amounts to a penalty or a tax. democrats say romney has flip-flopped. >> the supreme court is the final word, right? highest court in the land. they said it was a tax. it is a tax, of course. >> i think that people see the president as being a strong leader standing up for his principles and moving forward and we'll let mitt romney argue with himself. >> reporter: again, back out live to joint base andrews, watching president obama board air force one to begin his campaign bus tour. another major issue in the election will be jobs. new associated press survey out of economists that shows the national unemployment rate will likely stay above 6% for at least four more years. meaning, the presidential election will not be a miracle cure for the economy no matter which candidate wins the election. the unemployment rate is 8.2%, right now. you see president obama exiting his limousine ready to
board the steps to air force one. he will be talking his plate form on the campaign trail. again mitt romney has republican governors following president obama to give voters the alternate opinion on that same route if you will. there's the president right now again kicking off a two-day bus plane before he boards air force one, tomorrow the june jobs report comes out that will be interesting to see how it affects this president while he's still in the white house. new this morning, three children are dead after yacht capsized last night in new york's long island sound while the passengers were apparently watching fireworks. 24 others were rescued from the water an hour after the boat tipped over the bodies of a 12-year-old boy and two girls 11 and 8 were recovered after an overnight search.

resume buying bonds to stimulate growth. markets don't seem that impressed, worried about slowing growth, dow down about 70 points and the s&p, nasdaq lower. bloomberg index trading higher. it is hanging in there here this morning. some folks skipping homeownership because they can't afford to buy or don't want to. apartment vacancies are down that means rents are going up. 1.3% price increase over the past three months the biggest in almost five years six of the top 10 markets increases including san francisco. they have boosted biotech jobs. hotels, increasingly adding nonroom features to bring in more money like meetingrooms that can be repurposed for a nighttime cooking party and yoga studios. one hotel spending millions to renovate within hotel reworking public spaces like
