♪ history will be made at the belmont stakes tomorrow. a jockey is set to become the first female jockey to ride in all three triple crown races in the same year. pretty impressive. >> very impressive. to see why that is a rare event we have our correspondent who went to the racing academy where would-be jockeys are trained. good morning, nicky. >> good morning, john, diana. the freshman class at this exclusive jockey school accepted 12 students into their racing program. believe it or not, 11 are women. these young ladies are fighting the odds and manning up in this macho world. it is a rare sight, a bright pink riding helmet flying along above a racehorse. the young woman beneath its brim grew up with her heart set on

this. a shot as a professional jockey in the death-defying, adrenaline-pumping sport of racing a thoroughbred up to 40 miles an hour. >> i just love horses. love riding. love going fast. >> reporter: here in lexington, kentucky where horses and hooves are plenty. this 22-year-old is a few strides away from graduation at the only jockey school in the u.s., north american racing academy. only 16% of licensed jockeys are female. right now the top 100. only two are women. one of the women is rosie napravnik, while often alone in the female locker room. tomorrow all eyes will be on her. she is riding her way into history. as the first woman ever to ride in all three triple crown races. >> no princesses, you know. you got to be one of the guys. >> reporter: 19-year-old jockey student, knows full well it is a cutthroat sport. >> when we first started riding, it was basically like the movie "hunger games."

>> reporter: expected to weigh under 112 pounds, these young ladies will risk their health and even their lives. >> since 1940, two jockeys a year and two more are paralyzed every year. so it is a lot more dangerous than nascar, parachuting or skydiving. >> reporter: according to the jockeys guild there are 48 accidents a week involving jockeys. >> i fell off had a bad concussion last summer. and you know, get back on the horse. you don't let it phase you. >> reporter: that burning desire for some adrenaline, for others money. for most it is nothing more than a simple love of horses. >> when you are on that horse, they're running for you. you can feel that. they love it. >> one student did quit. just this week another had a bad fall. they're a tough bunch taking a chance. inspired by rosie. >> tell me, nikki, what exactly does her success mean for other females wanting to be jockeys. other young girls who may look up to this. >> it's funny. rosie when she started her

career would go by initials ar to disguise herself as the a male. she said she doesn't love being celebrated as a female. just wants to be one of the guys known for her great riding. she is a great inspiration to these young girls. >> you were an equestrian, show jumping, at jockey school you got on a thoroughbred. how was that different? >> it was different. i got this. i can do this. it was humbling. the technique is different. it is some ways reverse. i did show jumping. interestingly the trainers at the school said they almost prefer students who have never ridden so they don't have to break the bad habits. don't think you will see me in the kentucky derby any time soon. >> we'll watch the belmont stakes with an entirely new perspective. all right, nikki, thanks. >> thanks. deep fried dough topped with sugar. wonder what that is about. we are celebrating the tradition. the doughnut. we'll try versions of the bakery

john muller and diana perez. good friday morning. going to be a wet weekend. >> it is here in the northeast. a lot of wet weather. on our way. good napping weather. >> absolutely. it is friday. >> good for us. it is friday. >> that's the good news. >> yep. >> now let's get to the not so good news. we begin with damaging winds and flooding rains of tropical storm andreaple. >> weather system now making its way up the east coast with watches and warnings posted from northern virginia up to the, new england area, millions living in florida's gulf coast are drying out after a day of damaging weather. our coverage begins now with abc's marci gonzalez. >> reporter: tropical storm andrea crossed florida, dumping rain and flooding roads. the first named storm of the atlantic hurricane season bringing with it sustained winds as high as 60 miles an hour. tornados have touched down in florida forcing families to take cover. >> i heard it start to rumble. i grabbed her. we got in my bathroom closet. >> reporter: places like here in

florida, they're left with a lot to clean up. >> just amazing, been through so many hurricanes, nothing. this comes through a block wide and does this kind of damage. it is pretty intense. >> reporter: the storm is fast moving as it sets its sights north to georgia and the carolinas where the threat is clearing out beaches and chasing away some tourists. >> we got hit -- where we had to evacuate the island. we were no power for several days and no hot water for two weeks. >> reporter: before continuing on its path along the eastern seaboard. tropical storm andrea expected to bring heavy rainfall from d.c. up through boston. marci gonzalez, abc news, new york. >> making matters worse, tropical storm andrea will be merging with a system in the northeast. >> expect powerful winds, 8 inches of rain a. meteorologist jim dickey with an update from accuweather. good morning, jim. >> good morning, john, diana. well, andrea made landfall as a tropical storm and continues to spin itself northward.

it is accelerating as we speak. going to move up the eastern seaboard as we head through friday through the weekend. the primary concern, heading forward not the wind but rainfall. this rolls up the eastern seaboard going to interact with a system, tracking out of the ohio valley. that spells heavy rainfall. headed through the weekend. as far as today is concerned, heavy rain, focused on the mid-atlantic. down on through the raleigh area, up onto new york city. rain coming down steady and heavy at times. by tonight many spots. talking multiple inches of rain. especially through south carolina into georgia. 4 to 8 inches of rain by tonight. john, diana, back to you. >> thank you, jim. we'll continue to bring you updates from accuweather all morning long. stay tuned for "america this morning" and "good morning america," as we continue to follow tropical storm andrea's path. >> our other big story this morning. new information about the government's collection of data and reportedly goes further than phone records. "the washington post" reports the nsa and fbi are tapping

directly into the servers of nine u.s. internet companies. it is an effort to track personal movements and contacts over time. four of the companies are denying the government is tapping into their systems. abc's brian ross investigates the phone record aspect of this story. >> reporter: no american is exempt from the secret program, from office workers in new york city to members of congress, hollywood celebrities, teenagers in the mall. the government doesn't listen to the phone calls, but obtains the record of every call made, to what numbers, for how long and from where. >> it reflects what you eat, what you read, political affiliations, maybe your faith, or your mental health. >> reporter: the program began under president bush who said it was limited in scope. >> we are not mining or trolling through the personal lives of millions of innocent americans. >> reporter: the publication by a british newspaper of this top secret court order requiring a verizon subsidiary to turn over all call detail records including local calls for customers confirms in

black-and-white, the program continues and is all encompassing. not what congress heard from the obama administration's top intelligence official three months ago. >> does the nsa collect any type of data at all on millions or hundreds of millions of americans? >> no, sir. >> reporter: officials have told abc news, it is more than just verizon. there are similar secret orders for the records of all u.s. phone companies. >> it is sweeping. it is not what i would expect out of the united states. >> reporter: federal officials call it a critical tool used for example to track a spider web of connections for suspects like accused boston bombers. >> i can tell you within the last few years there was a domestic case thwarted because of -- of their ability to do this. >> reporter: even so -- no one we asked across government could or would tell us any specific details of the supposedly thwarted plot. like the program itself

apparently too secret for the public to know. brian ross, abc news, new york. >> lots of sides to this one. >> lots of side to this. >> believe it or not, there are actually plenty of people who are actually applauding government for doing this saying, spy agencies need this kind of information. but the latest information coming out, "washington post" bombshell about tapping into the servers of internet companies as well. lot of people say this is big brother going way too far. >> this is flying in the face of what president obama himself said back in 2007 when a senator. he was very vocal condemning the practices and demanded they end saying they were going to violate civil liberties. a lot of people say on this side say that is true. you can't just go in and troll around and see who is calling who what that is all about. especially if there is no imminent danger. if there is imminent danger you can do it. to say, "terrorism is scary," it is scary and we have our own

liberties, we are protected to know our calls are not being monitored. looking at who you're talking to and who is calling us. scary. >> a scandal. >> we'll stay on it. a day after a dying pennsylvania girl was placed on the adult waiting list for a lung transplant, her family says her condition is getting worse. under current transplant policy children under 12 including 10-year-old sarah murnaghan would have to wait for pediatric donors. the judge that put sarah on the adult list, also adds an 11-year-old boy. his mother filed a lawsuit saying he would die without a transplant. a 6-year-old girl is back with her family after being rescued from a well on a mississippi farm. the kindergartner was on a school field trip when she fell down a 35 foot well, got stuck in the mud. the opening was 15 inches wide. rescuers lowered a doll to comfort her during the three-hour ordeal. she was pulled to safety with no visible injuries. the latest gauge on the employment outlook.

released this morning. investors are eagerly anticipating this one. analysts predict the labor department will say 167,000 jobs were created last month and unemployment rate unchanged at 7.5%. last week the number of americans filing for unemployment fell by 11,000, an encouraging sign. ahead of today's job numbers, wall street staged a strong rally, yesterday afternoon. early on the dow was down as much as 116 points. thanks to a late surge the dow closed up 80 points. best day for the market in nearly three weeks. a really great idea comes to us from a little coffee shop down under. metro st. james cafe in sydney, australia. basically what they're doing this month is trying to increase love in the world. >> simple strategy. the cafe is offering pairs of patrons free coffee only if they give each other a good kiss. has to be on the lips. right, kiss. morning coffee is free. >> hmm. well it is going on for the month of june. for a couple hours each morning. i understand some work is being done to try to find a cafe to do the same thing here in new york

>> reporter: 6-year-old lucy haircut is creating hair raising headlines. her mother, jackie loves it too. defending her daughter's mohawk-inspired style online to out raged moms who blog that lucy's too young. the great hair chop was the kindergartner's idea. >> i was thinking and thinking. lots of days. and then i came up with it, it was in my head. >> reporter: at first her mom who also has the two sons, said, absolutely not. she thought keeping her daughter's hair long was more acceptable for a little girl. and she had flash backs to her own childhood. >> i had a lot of self-esteem issues growing up. i think as girls we all do. i don't know that we are born with them. and she hasn't gotten there. why was i putting my years of experience and trying to please other people and look a certain way on someone who is not feeling that?
