now at 5:00, moments of impact. new video of the supertyphoon. where it is now and the troubles to deal with the storm's aftermath. >> a helping hand. the bay area playing a role in recovery efforts after typhoon haiyan. >> details on a major recall of ready-made salads. abc7 news at 5:00 starts right now. the breaking news is on the peninsula where a shelter in place way, in effect for residents in a redwood city neighborhood because of a fire burning at a metal recycling plant nearby. that fire is putting up a lot of smoke in the air, and the smoke has been spreading across a wide part of the peninsula.

it was reported at the simms metal management plant, near the port of redwood city. a pile of scrap metal caught fire and is creating all the smoke. the city is asking neighbors living nearby to stay indoors and keep doors and windows shut. hospitals have been notified. and rods near the recycling center are closed. the smoke is blowing in a southwesterly direction. officials say the fire is in the process of being extinguished but may take four hours to do. so we'll have a reporter live at 6:00. >> happening now. several people leaving the 49ers game this evening are reporting thick smoke near candlestick. you can see it here from our sutro tower cam, a photo from the fire burning northeast of the parking lot. officials say there are no injuries or evacuations and theyable and to have the fire

under control soon. >> now, to the latest developments as the philippines struggles to recover from typhoon haiyan. some relief flights are making their way in and out of the airport, the first city hit by the typhoon. the mayor says it's possible that up to 10,000 people died in the storm. the storm surge created a 20-foot wall of water and some areas still have not been reached because they're cut off by flooding and landslides. >> we want to show you some new video in tonight that shows the ferocity of the few -- typhoon. the moment it hit land. take a look. >> windows didn't stand a chance. those winds so powerful, smashing windows, ripping off portions of the building's roof. these images were captured

friday as haiyan battered a hotel. some residents stood in prayer as the storm roared through. here's the latest. reporter: wind, water; and weeping. all the cruel calling cards of supertyphoon haiyan. winds driving rain up to 159 miles-per-hour, left behind wastelands. ace hundreds are known dead with the toll likely to soar into the thousands. >> we just made a mass grave for 57 people who died, says the mayor of this town. that number is going do increase. the storm made this chapel a morgue. relatives looking for lost loved ones pray not to find them here. giant waves wash this huge ship ashore, and storm surges as high as 20 feet are feared to have swept many victims out to sea. others believed lost under

mounds of debris. soldiers desperately search for life beneath this block of cement. for some it was too late. hundreds of thousands are going to relief centers, desperate for necessities. >> we need food, clothes, weather says this man. it should be given towels immediately. 90 u.s. marines arrived from japan with supplies for victims of the storm and to help in search and rescue efforts. with so much of the philippines still flooded and electricity and communication cut and so many roads choked off by debris, the sufferings of millions of storm victims are just beginning. abc news. >> the philippine national red cross says relief efforts are being hampered by looters. the president is now considering declaring a state of emergency or martial law. a steady stream of typhoon victims are arriving at the airport looking for food, water, and escape. they're begging for more help.

friend, and supposedly they're okay. i haven't talked to my parents themselves, but we're praying they're all good. >> not far away, prayers for the victims at the first filipino american unite church of christ. >> we know there is no food, they don't have housing, they're trying to find family members, saying goodbye to them. >> at the end of the service, a simple green basket was used to collect donations for the victims, and as amazing grace played, every member of the church took time to give. ♪ >> and the church says it will continue to collect donations through the month. meantime, that relief drive on the el camino collected 47 boxes of food and $1,600 in donations. live in san bruno, abc7 news.

if you would like to help those affected by the storm, go to our web site and click on "see it on tv". haiyan is now weakening. leigh glaser is tracking the storm. >> it certainly is but still packing some pretty good wind speeds. right now it's category one, starting to move in just to the northeast portions of vietnam, but it's just barely a typhoon, as it makes its way, landfall, head can towards the north northeast. winds will start to come down to 60 miles-per-hour later this evening, and as it heads into the southeastern portions of china by monday morning, looks like the winds will die down to 40 miles-per-hour. it will dedowngradeed to a area of low pressure then. so, it looks like the worst from this is about to end.

many of those who evacuated in vietnam in preparation of the supertyphoon have return home tonight. vietnam's coast appears to have been spared the brunt of haiyan's force, as leighshowed us, a weekenned high yap made landfall in northern vietnam. 600,000 people living in the central region were evacuated. another nation in haiyan's path was battered with heavy wind and strong reasons. it's the 30th typhoon to hit china this year. several flights were cancelled due to the weather, leaving 400 people stranded. our coverage on this developing story continues now on our web site, our facebook page and on twitter. ahead, the annual event to honor those who served our country. the veterans day parade makes its way through the streets of san francisco. vets say it's an important event. >> how we communicate, it's

the low 40s there. the rest of us mid-to-upper 40s, and here's the setup, folks. high pressure has been bringing us really nice, mild conditions the past four to five days. we're going to start the toe see the highs weak ', the jet stream will get close to the bay area, and the tail end of the cold front will thick 'our cloud -- thicken our includeds tomorrow, temperatures come down and bringing a rain threat to the north bay monday night and tuesday morning. here's the timing. 11:00 tonight through tomorrow morning, commute time, if you are going to work with the low clouds and fog near san francisco, and then by 5:00 tomorrow afternoon, the clouds really start to race in. this is 10:00 tomorrow evening, and you can clearly see the defining rain line. the cold front making its way into the north bay. by 5:00 a.m. commute time tuesday, ucould i a, down to santa rosa -- this is going to affect mainly sonoma county, and
