>> good wednesday morning, everybody. i'm john muller. >> i'm marci gonzalez in for diana perez. we begin with the 12th day of the ongoing search for malaysia airlines flight 370. >> frustration is rising hand in hand with confusion as once again malaysian officials change their version of several key details about the flight. our coverage begins now with abc's david kerley. >> reporter: the mystery of flight 370 came no close to being solved when again the malaysian government -- >> i would like to say -- >> reporter: -- changed the story. so few facts have produced so many theories. the long-time pilot who wrote, it could have been a fire in the cockpit that brought that big turn off the flight path, but u.s. sources say they remain focused on what appears to be a deliberate act, and it is all because of the tidbits of information we do have. as we first reported this weekend, a source says someone programmed the autopilot for that dramatic left turn off the flight path before 1:07 a.m. 12 minutes later, the final radio call to malaysian

controllers, reportedly from the co-pilot, "all right, good night" is what he said, no sign of trouble. two minutes later, the location transponder goes down. at another point the communication system stops working, too. that hard bank to the left sends the jet back over malaysia, up the straits of malacca, and apparently turning into the indian ocean. the shutdown of the systems, all those turns tell investigators someone was at the controls who wanted to disappear. but even that is not a complete timeline. an xanch a critical piece of information on when a communication system, acars, shut down. was it before the last radio call? >> yes, it was disabled before. >> reporter: then two days before. >> we cannot determine exactly when acars was disabled. >> a lot of speculation not just within the public and media, but people involved in the investigation and the search. >> reporter: on tuesday, thailand it said went back and looked at its radar data and found that the plane did cross back over malaysia. more proof of that big turn.

the end of the cold war or the end of the soviet union. >> reporter: putin, a former kgb officer, was shaped bit cold war, watching his soviet union collapse from this to this. now some of the nations that broke away are watching russia's moves nervously. that's why vice president biden is in the region, reassuring those nations, telling them the u.s. may rotate american forces to the baltic region for expanded militarier and sizes and training missions. but nothing seems to be stopping vladimir putin who seems intent on defying the u.s., no matter what the warnings. martha raddatz, abc news, washington. at komo tv, our abc affiliate in seattle, they are mourning the death of coworkers after the station's helicopter crashed near the city's famous space needle. the fully fueled chopper was lifting off from the station's roof when it suddenly dropped to the street below and exploded.

komo photograph erbil strothman and pilot gary pfitzner were killed. a driver on the ground was severely killed. in iowa a state trooper was parked off interstate 80 when a pickup careened off and slammed into his squad car. that pickup had been hit by a semi truck and the force sent it airborne. amazingly the trooper and pickup driver didn't suffer any injuries. >> incredible video. toyota ready to accept a huge settlement with the department of justice. abc news learned prosecutors have been investigating the company for years over cars that suddenly sped up. they want to know whether toyota misled investigators about what the company knew. the company will pay hundreds of millions to avoid criminal charges. the same investigators are pursuing general motors over a defect that has been linked to 12 deaths. ceo mary barra apologized for the death and it is delay in the

ntsb now in charge of this investigation. >> reporter: if the plane was in trouble, officials say it didn't send any signal. >> there were a number of distress beacons on board the aircraft. we know they have not been activated because we are the receiving authority for such alerts. >> reporter: investigators can't rule out catastrophic system failure but say all signs point to a deliberate act. at least 12 minutes before the last radio call, "all right, good night" someone used a cockpit computer to program a change in course. two malaysian tuna fishermen in kota bharu told bob woodruff they may have spotted it before the infamous left turn. a man seen flying a jumbo jet in the waters between malaysian and vietnam. they reported the sighting to local police. australia says a complete search of that area 1500 miles off its coast will take a few weeks.

for a dramatic left turn off the flight path. >> when it comes to that dramatic left turn,there are people in rural malaysia who claim to have seen flight 370 almost exactly where that turn is thought to have taken place. abc's bob woodruff went to track them down. >> reporter: we travel to the tiny fishing village of kota bharu to find witnesses who say they saw the plane. could these have been the last people to see flight 370. so, you two both witnessed this plane? a group of men aboard this body on the night the plane vanished, fishing for tuna. they say they were here, ten miles out to sea, when they suddenly saw a jet barrelling by them, flying low, louder and bigger than any plane they had ever seen in the sky. how big did it look to you? he tells us the body of the plane was not clear but the lights were very bright. could it have been the plane? the fishermen say they were here, and this is where we

diana perez. we begin with the 12th day of the ongoing search for malaysia airlines flight 370. >> frustration is rising hand in hand with confusion as once again malaysian officials change their version of several key details about the flight. our coverage begins now with abc's david kerley. >> reporter: the mystery of flight 370 came no closer to being solved when again the malaysian government -- >> i would like to say -- >> reporter: -- changed the story. so few facts have produced so many theories. the long-time pilot who wrote, it could have been a fire in the cockpit that brought that big turn off the flight path, but u.s. sources say they remain focused on what appears to be a deliberate act, and it is all because of the tidbits of information we do have. as we first reported this weekend, a source says someone programmed the autopilot for that dramatic left turn off the flight path before 1:07 a.m. 12 minutes later, the final radio call to malaysian controllers, reportedly from the co-pilot, "all right, good

night" is what he said, no sign of trouble. two minutes later, the location transponder goes down. at some point, another communication system stops working, too. and that hard bank to the left sends the jet back over malaysia, up the straits of malacca and apparently turning into the indian ocean. the shutdown of the systems, all those turns tell investigators someone was at the controls who wanted to disappear. but even that is not a complete timeline. an example a critical piece of information on when a communication system, acars, shut down. was it before the last radio call? >> yes, it was disabled before. >> reporter: then two days later -- >> we cannot determine exactly when acars was disabled. >> it leads to a lot of speculation. not just within the public and the media, but i think also with people involved in the investigation and in the search. >> reporter: on tuesday, thailand said it went back and looked at its radar data and found that the plane did cross back over malaysia.

komo photographer bill strothman and pilot gary pfitzner were killed. a driver on the ground was severely burned. in iowa, a state trooper was parked off interstate 80 when a pickup truck careened off the freeway and slammed into his squad car. turns out that pickup had been hit by a semitruck and the force sent it airborne. amazingly the trooper and the pick jum driver didn't suffer any major injuries. >> incredible video. toyota ready to accept a huge settlement with the department of justice. abc news learned prosecutors have been investigating the company for years over cars that suddenly sped up. they want to know whether toyota misled regulators and investigators about what it knew of the problem. the company will now pay hundreds of millions to avoid criminal charges. the same investigators are now pursuing general motors over a defect linked to 12 deaths. ceo mary barra apologized for the deaths and its delay in the recall of the cars with the faulty ignition switch.
