we begin with those dangerous wildfires burning in southern california. 1,200 homes and businesses have been evacuated in santa barbara county. >> in san diego, residents have started to go back home after being ordered out earlier in the day. the record heat fueling the flames not expected to break until later week. cecilia vega is on the fire lines. >> reporter: what started as a brushfire in san diego is a wildfire burning out of control. more than 700 acres torched so far. >> my sister got everybody out. then we came back for the dogs and a couple of things. >> reporter: firefighters battling it on the ground as homeowners use garden hoses to keep it at bay. >> it is unusual in may to have wind-driven fires like that that prove to be such a challenge to contain. >> reporter: with extremely dry conditions, triple-digit temperatures and heavy winds, california is bracing for dangers. >> we staffed additional resources in the high hazard areas. >> reporter: san francisco, los angeles and long beach, all in

the midst of a heat wave that could shatter records. it's the wind that can be a firefighter's worst enemy and the wind is not cooperating. this gauge telling me these numbers quickly climbing, reaching up to 50 miles an hour in some places. red flag warnings in effect for more than 15 million people. the potential for fire so high firefighters in southern california are closing some roads to traffic to make way for trucks. it's not just california. hundreds of people in fritch, texas, are still evacuated after a wildfire there burned more than 90 homes. these cal fire crews called in from hundreds of miles away ready to jump into action at a moment's notice. what they need most here and around the west is rain. >> our thanks to cecilia vega reporting from southern california. >> she mentioned fire crews will get no help from the weather. accu-weather's jim dickey has the details. good morning, john and diana. temperatures continue to soar along the west coast. many spots will challenge

records once again. that includes fresno, climbing well into the triple-digits. l.a. breaking a new record. goes for san diego, too. all the way north to san francisco where we will near 90 degrees. with this, the santa ana winds continue. high fire danger continues. dry with gusty winds and any fire that does form will be able to spread quickly. john and diana, back to you. >> jim, thank you. a travel nightmare for thousands of people trying to get in and out of chicago. more than 1,100 flights were cancelled at o'hare and midway airports yesterday after an electrical problem caused smoke to fill a regional radar center. some passengers were stuck in long lines trying to rebook and incoming flights had to be diverted. a jetway collapse at seatac airport in washington state as passengers were getting off a southwest airlines flight there. officials say mechanical failure caused the walkway to the drop six to eight feet. no one was hurt thanks to a backup system that made it fall slowly.

a stairway was brought for the rest of the passengers to exit. american surveillance planes are in the air over nigeria joining the search for more than 200 kidnapped schoolgirls. abc's hamish mcdonald has the latest from nigeria. >> reporter: u.s. forces are peering down from surveillance aircraft like this, scouring remote and rugged areas the size of new england in search of the missing girls. the plane is equipped with powerful cameras that give realtime images of the ground as far away as 35,000 feet with this kind of detail. officials can also monitor phone calls below. abc news learned a long-range u.s. drone has also joined the search. this is urgent work for the parents of the missing who have positively identified at least 50 of the girls in this latest video. for all of the attention they have generated it is only now, a full month after the abduction they have what they want, the support of the international community and the full attention

of their own government. one of america's top commanders here for a scheduled trip has reviewed the search efforts led by a team of experts. the next step is talks. nigeria's government is in contact with boko haram, the violent extremist group behind the kidnapping. for all the effort, all the support and worry, these tiny face are still in grave danger. hamish mcdonald, abc news, nigeria. >> the head of the cia is sharing his thoughts on a range of issues involving u.s. intelligence. cia director john brennan sat down for an exclusive interview with our sister network fusion and he told jorge ramos young people who believe edward snowden did something right don't understand the complications of it. >> i think i am, first of all, outraged that there are individuals who decided to take it upon themselves to reveal some of the very, very important capabilities that this country has in place to keep americans

safe. so what mr. snowden or others have done to violate their oath which is to do everything possible to keep americans safe from harm, truly has undermined our ability to fulfill our responsibilities. >> brennan also discussed the benghazi attack, al qaeda and the conflict in ukraine. you can catch the interview on fusion.net. the death toll of that mine accident in turkey is expected to rise as rescuers struggle to reach workers still trapped. more than 200 people have been confirmed dead and at least that many are still under ground. some of the miners are 500 yards deep inside, and rescue efforts are reaching a critical stage. the west virginia coal mine where two workers died monday night has one of the worst safety records in the country. the mine was cited for 250 safety violations over the past year including more than 30 for showing high or reckless

disregard for miners' health and safety. investigators are trying to determine if any violations led to monday's accident. the political mud is flying this morning between hillary clinton's camp and republican strategist karl rove. it stems from comments rove made monday about clinton possibly having brain damage. he's not going that far now but still claiming clinton had a serious health episode in december 2012. clinton's spokesperson says she's 100%, and when asked about it at the white house yesterday, president obama's spokesman mocked rove. >> dr. rove might have been the last person in america on election night to acknowledge and recognize that the president had won re-election, including the state of ohio. so we'll leave it at that. >> we know that hillary clinton was at home suffering from a stomach bug when she fainted, fell and suffered a concussion. they discovered a blood clot in a vein behind her right ear and was treated with blood thinners

investigation for attempted robbery. a woman is accusing the troubled pop star of grabbing her cell phone out of her purse. those are some of our top stories on this wednesday, may 14th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now" with john muller and diana perez. good wednesday morning, everybody. we will begin this half hour with those dangerous fire conditions in southern california. record high temperatures and strong winds helping to fuel this fire in northern san diego county. >> months of drought have left much of the landscape ready to burn. abc's devin dwyer is joining us with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, john and diana. forecasters have been warning about these dangerous conditions for days. now a number of fires have broken out. the fast-moving brushfire swept the bone-dry hills near san diego. >> it's unusual in may to have wind-driven fires like this that prove to be such a challenge to contain. >> reporter: the flames burning

hundreds of acres and coming dangerously close to homes. >> my sister got everybody out and we came back for the dogs and a couple of things. >> reporter: firefighters hauled their hoses to the front lines as some nervous homeowners used garden hoses to help out. extreme dry air, record heat and gusty winds have communities across the southwest on high alert. >> we staffed additional resources in the high-hazard areas. >> reporter: the heat wave could be a record breaker with some california cities expecting triple-digits through thursday. near l.a., a dehydrated hiker got caught off guard and was plucked from the heat by helicopter. red flag warnings are in effect for 15 million people. fires are popping up across the southwest. smoke from this blaze so dense it blocked the afternoon sun. in prescott, arizona, firefighters scrambled through the forest as dozens of nearby residents left their homes behind. hundreds of people in fritch, texas, are still evacuated after

a wildfire there burned more than 90 homes. what is desperately needed here and across the west is rain. there isn't any in the forecast, but the intense heat should break by the weekend. john and diana. >> thank you. >> there's no rain in the forecast for the fire zone. and today's temperatures will not be much help either. accuweather's jim dickey has the details. good morning, jim. >> good morning, john and diana. holding on to extreme warmth in the west. this as high pressure dominates. aloft and at the surface brings the winds in out of the northeast and the desert, sweeping in across california keeping the cool pacific air held off shore. temperatures soaring. many spots breaking records including fresno. likely to climb to 104 here today. break records l.a. san diego, nearly reaching 90 in san francisco. that would set a new record as well. with this here, gusty santa ana winds racing in out of the

north and east in southern california with that. high fire danger once again. extremely dry in these areas. humidity 5 to 10%. any wildfires that form easily spreading today. john and diana, back to you. >> all right, jim. thank you. a frightening ordeal for workers at our tv affiliate in baltimore. a driver claimed to be god and rammed a stolen truck through the front door of wmar, drove it in to the lobby. all of the employees escaped unharmed, but the man barricaded himself inside the station for five hours. he was eventually arrested in an edit room in the basement of the station. >> we had a mentally ill suspect who had commandeered a tv station and was watching tv news. >> suspect was identified as a 29-year-old man. he was taken in for mental evaluation. two kindergartners from up state new york were seriously hurt when the bouncy house they were playing in suddenly took off. a gust of wind sent the house 20 feet high with the boys inside. one child eventually fell to the street below. the other hit a car. the house had been staked to the

ground but the gust of wind proved too strong. the youngest son of vice president joe biden has accepted a job with ukraine's largest oil company. hunter biden joins the board of directors at a time when the u.s. is urging independence from russia but the white house and vice president's office says there is no conflict of interest. he will oversee the legal unit and manage its international relations. ground breaking decision from europe's highest court about personal privacy on the internet. the court ruled that google delete links to embarrassing personal information even if it is true. it stunned the tech world. it allows 500 million people in the european union to request the change and google has little choice but to comply. no word how it may affect american users. wall street is a happy place after another record day. the dow closed at 16,715, the fourth record closing this year. the s&p had a new high ending at 1897 but the nasdaq closed lower

by 14 points. health officials in florida are keeping an eye on health care workers and others who came in contact with a man now diagnosed with the mers virus. the search is on for hundreds of people that may have been exposed during the patient's journey from saudi arabia. the cdc sent a warning to airports around the country telling people to wash their hands and not touch their face. another health headline about the sharp increase in the use of antidepressants over the last decade and a half. just released numbers from the cdc shows antidepressant use is up fourfold. the numbers show women are more likely to take antidepressants than men. >> when it comes to men, using antidepressants, it's older men that are likely to take them than men between 18 and 44 years old. >> two fears that people maybe prescribed them unnecessarily. mental health experts say half of depressed americans are not receiving the treatment they need. >> isn't that interesting? it is like an oxymoron.

this morning on "world news now," hundreds at risk of a dangerous and deadly virus could be on the move after an infected passenger passes through several busy airports. now authorities are trying to track down anyone who might be infected. plus -- >> she was like it is probably around here. his little arms and legs were going. >> wild ride. three children are swept away while playing in an inflatable bounce house. the bizarre accident that left the kids seriously hurt. new details in the fight between rapper jay-z and his sister-in-law and how they are now publicly keeping the peace. it is wednesday, may 14th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now" with john muller and diana perez. good wednesday morning, everyone. we begin with the search for hundreds of people who may have been exposed to the mers virus.

>> the cdc has sent warnings to airports around the country telling passengers to wash their hands and not touch their face. abc's steve osunsami reports. >> reporter: health officials are trying to track down more than 500 passengers from at least 20 states. anyone, including crew members, who shared a may 1st flight with that florida patient diagnosed with mers. a new porks tentially deadly respiratory disease imported from the middle east. they are posting warnings at 22 of the nation's busiest airports. the infected passenger from saudi arabia flew into boston, atlanta and into orlando where they are warning travelers to look out for flu-like symptoms. >> we travel a lot. it is concerning. especially going overseas next month. >> reporter: at two hospitals in orlando where the saudi medical worker went for treatment, two health care workers who treated him are already showing symptoms. one is hospitalized with what looks like pneumonia. to be safe, the hospital sent 20

other health care workers home for two weeks. >> i would think we're not going to see the last of this. we will see other travelers come from this part of the world. >> reporter: so far, two confirmed cases in the u.s. the cdc says doctors can only treat the symptoms, giving oxygen to help breathing and drugs to break the fever. so there's no cure, no treatment really? >> there's no treatment or vaccine for this virus. >> reporter: they think it is spread during close and long-lasting exposure to someone who's sick and believe it may be the cough that spreads the virus. the florida doctors aren't taking chances. wearing special masks, goggles, gowns and gloves when they walk into the sick patient's room. when they leave they take all the gear off and throw it away. both of the patients diagnosed with this in the u.s. are recovering tonight and doctors sent the first patient from indiana home but this is still very serious business. a third of the people that have gotten sick with this have died. steve osunsami, abc news, atlanta. now to a political back and

forth involving hillary clinton and republican strategist karl rove. it started on monday when rove reportedly suggested that clinton has brain damage and that if she runs for president voters have a right to know what happened when she suffered a fall in december of 2012. now, rove seems to be walking those comments back telling the "washington post" this is a serious health episode. she would not be human if it didn't enter into her calculations. clinton's camp is pushing back, as well. her spokesman says of rove and the gop, they are scared of what she has achieved and what she has to offer. even president obama's spokesman came to clinton's defense, mockingly pointing out that rove had been wrong in the past. >> dr. rove might have been the last person in america on election night to recognize and acknowledge that the president won re-election including the state of ohio. we'll leave it at that. >> as for the december 2012 incident, hillary clinton was at home recovering from a stomach

bug when she fainted, fell and suffered a confugs. during a follow-up exam, doctors discovered a blood clot in a vein behind her right ear. she was treated with blood thinners during a brief hospital stay. >> man, oh, man, politics. her spokesman said she is 100% and he accuses -- or rove is accused of being part of an effort by republicans to politicize hillary clinton's health. >> when it first came out, the gop had a saying for it calling it the benghazi flu. she had to reschedule a number of appearances and they said she was faking what was going on. now her own spokesmen are saying, before they were accusing her ever faking it. now they are accusing her of turning it into this huge thing and outright lying about it. so it begins. happening right now, crews battling two wildfires in southern california. thousands of homes had have been evacuated on the outskirts of san diego. the rugged terrain and unseasonably warm temperatures made firefighting more difficult. in santa barbara county, 1,200 homes and businesses were

evacuated. record-high temperatures predicted throughout much of california the next two days. to turkey now this morning. rescuers are racing to reach more than 200 miners trapped in an underground mine. an explosion and fire at the mine has already killed at least 200 of the workers, and there are fears the death toll will rise sharply. the accident happened during a shift change, which meant there were more workers at the mine than usual. federal safety investigators are on the scene of a fatal mine accident in west virginia. two men were killed monday night at brody mine in boone county. the mine has had so many safety problems that federal officials deemed it a pattern violator. a rare designation reserved for the industry's worst offenders. the men were killed by a coal burst, when high-speed coal is shot at anyone in the way. a frightening ordeal for our tv affiliates in baltimore. a driver claiming to be god rammed this stolen truck through the front door of wmar.

all the employees escaped unharmed, but the man barricade himself in the station for five hours. he was eventually arrested in an edit room where he was watching tv coverage of the scene. two little boys in upstate new york are recovering from serious injuries after the bouncy house they were playing in suddenly took off. thousands of children have suffered similar injuries around the country now that the houses have become so popular. here's abc's jim avila. >> reporter: no, it is not a kite. it is an inflatable play house flying through the air. one minute staked to the earth in the front yard and the next swept off the ground with three children inside. the wind blowing upwards of 25 miles an hour, lifting the entire house more than two stories high and carrying it over a stretch of woods and finally landing on a two-story school building. >> out of a horror movie, yeah. >> reporter: a 10-year-old girl suffered just scrapes but two boys ages 5 and 6 were injured more seriously. one suffering two broken arms and the other landing on a car

and has a serious head injury. >> his little arms and legs were going. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: the consumer product safety commission estimates 5,000 are injured in inflatables like this one two years ago. little tikes, the manufacturer, tells abc news, we are looking into what happened. our thoughts and prayers are with the children and their families. jim avila, abc news, washington. breaking overnight more trouble for justin bieber. he's accused of attempted robbery at a miniature golf park in southern california. according to tmz, bieber and his crew got in a scuffle with some other people. when he noticed a woman was reaching for her phone, he demanded she turn it over so he could erase any pictures. when she refused, he grabbed it out of her purse. they are investigating, but so far bieber has not been arrested. magic johnson is responding to a shot from clippers owner donald sterling whose racist

comments have earned him a lifetime ban from the nba. when sterling spoke to cnn's anderson cooper, he repeatedly brought up the ex-nba star's hiv status and called him unfit role model for children. johnson said he found sterling shockingly ignorant. >> he's living in the stone ages. he can't make those comments about african-americans and latinos. he just can't do it. >> sterling's comments won him a quick and stinging rebuke from the nba commissioner adam silver who said owners were working quickly to force sterling out of the league. federal judges struck down idaho's ban on same-sex marriage. it clears the way for gay and lesbian couples to get married as soon as friday. the judge ruled the ban is unconstitutional because it wrongly stigmatizes same-sex couples. she says the law denies their fundamental right to marry and relegates their families to second-class status. idaho's governor is planning to appeal the case. kyle white was awarded a medal of honor. during an ambush by taliban

good morning. we begin with those dangerous wildfires burning in southern california. 1,200 homes and businesses have been evacuated in santa barbara county. >> in san diego, residents have started to go back home after being ordered out earlier in the day. the record heat fueling the flames not expected to break until later week. abc's cecilia vega is on the fire lines. >> reporter: what started as a brushfire in san diego is a wildfire burning out of control. more than 700 acres torched so far. >> my sister got everybody out. then we came back for the dogs and a couple of things. >> reporter: firefighters battling it on the ground as homeowners use garden hoses to keep it at bay. >> it is unusual in may to have wind-driven fires like that that prove to be such a challenge to contain. >> reporter: with extremely dry conditions, triple-digit temperatures and heavy winds, california is bracing for dangers. >> we staffed additional resources in the high hazard areas. >> reporter: san francisco, los angeles and long beach, all in

the midst of a heat wave that could shatter records. it's the wind that can be a firefighter's worst enemy and the wind is not cooperating. this gauge telling me these numbers quickly climbing, reaching up to 50 miles an hour in some places. red flag warnings in effect for more than 15 million people. the potential for fire so high firefighters in southern california are closing some roads to traffic to make way for trucks. it's not just california. hundreds of people in fritch, texas, are still evacuated after a wildfire there burned more than 90 homes. these cal fire crews called in from hundreds of miles away ready to jump into action at a moment's notice. what they need most here and around the west is rain. >> our thanks to cecilia vega reporting from southern california. >> she mentioned fire crews will get no help from the weather. accuweather's jim dickey has the details. >> good morning, john and diana. temperatures continue to soar along the west coast. many spots will challenge

records once again. that includes fresno climbing well into the triple-digits. l.a. breaking a new record. goes for san diego, too. all the way north to san francisco where we will near 90 degrees. with this, the santa ana winds continue. high fire danger continues. dry with gusty winds and any fire that does form will be able to spread quickly. john and diana, back to you. >> jim, thank you. a travel nightmare for thousands of people trying to get in and out of chicago. more than 1,100 flights were cancelled at o'hare and midway airports yesterday after an electrical problem caused smoke to fill a regional radar center. controllers had to be evacuated for several hours. some passengers were stuck in long lines trying to rebook and incoming flights had to be diverted. a jetway collapse at seatac airport in washington state as passengers were getting off a southwest airlines flight there. officials say mechanical failure caused the walkway to the drop six to eight feet. no one was hurt thanks to a backup system that made it fall slowly. a stairway was brought for the

rest of the passengers to exit. american surveillance planes are in the air over nigeria joining the search for more than 200 kidnapped schoolgirls. abc's hamish mcdonald has the latest from nigeria. >> reporter: u.s. forces are peering down from surveillance craft like this, scouring remote and rugged areas the size of new england in search of the missing girls. the plane is equipped with powerful cameras that give realtime images of the ground as far away as 35,000 feet with this kind of detail. they can also monitor phone calls from below. abc news learned a long-range u.s. drone has also joined the search. this is urgent work for the parents of the missing who have positively identified at least 50 of the girls in this latest video. for all of the attention they have generated it is only now, a full month after the abduction they have what they want, the support of the international community and the full attention

of their own government. one of america's top commanders here for a scheduled trip has reviewed the search efforts led by a team of experts. the next step is talks. nigeria's government is in contact with boko haram, the violent extremist group behind the kidnapping. for all the effort, all the support and worry, these tiny faces are still in grave danger. hamish mcdonald, abc news, nigeria. >> the head of the cia is sharing his thoughts on a range of issues involving u.s. intelligence. cia director john brennan sat down for an exclusive interview with our sister network fusion and he told jorge ramos young people who believe edward snowden did something right don't understand the implications of it. >> i think i am, first of all, outraged that there are individuals who decided to take it upon themselves to reveal some of the very, very important capabilities that this country has in place to keep americans safe.

so what mr. snowden or others have done to violate their oath which is to do everything possible to keep americans safe from harm, truly has undermined our ability to fulfill our responsibilities. >> brennan also discussed the benghazi attack, al qaeda and the conflict in ukraine. you can catch the interview on fusion.net. the death toll of that mine accident in turkey is expected to rise as rescuers struggle to reach workers still trapped. more than 200 people have been confirmed dead and at least that many are still under ground. some of the miners are 500 yards deep inside, and rescue efforts are reaching a critical stage. the west virginia coal mine where two workers died monday night has one of the worst safety records in the country. the mine was cited for 200 safety violations over the past year including more than 30 for

showing high or reckless disregard for miners' health and safety. investigators are trying to determine if any violations led to monday's accident. the political mud is flying this morning between hillary clinton's camp and republican strategist karl rove. it stems from comments rove made monday about clinton possibly having brain damage. he's not going that far now but still claiming clinton had a serious health episode in december 2012. clinton's spokesperson says she's 100%, and when asked about it at the white house yesterday, president obama's spokesman mocked rove. >> dr. rove might have been the last person in america on election night to acknowledge and recognize that the president had won re-election, including the state of ohio. so we'll leave it at that. >> regarding that december 2012 incident, we know that hillary clinton was at home suffering from a stomach bug when she fainted, fell and suffered a concussion. they discovered a blood clot in a vein behind her right ear and was treated with blood thinners during a brief hospital stay.
