live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. sky 7 h.d. shows the scene of a traffic construction accident in petaluma. c.h.p. said the worker was killed by a large pipe that was rolling down the hill to highway 101. the c.h.p. said the pipe rolled over the man as it headed to the freeway. our reporter, amy hollyfield, joins us from the scene. amy? >> we are told that the victim is a 29-year-old pipe layer and he worked with the construction company and was crushed by a pipe that was rolling down the
hill. he tried to stop it and he could not. it happened at 7:30 this morning along highway 101 at petaluma. the work being done here is a key part of preparing to wide were the highway to three lanes in each direction. we are set back from the freeway by 100 yards and there is a fence lining the perimeter and that stopped the pipe. officials say they don't know why he tried to stop the pipe. they say he did try to stop it, though he saw it coming and that probably was a kneejerk reaction. but it was too heavy and as it was rolling down the hill cal osha will investigate. train will investigate, too, saying the only comment they can give us is that their heart goes out to his family. at this point they have not released the victim's name but say he has been with the company for 8 1/2 years. thank you. marine scientists have just a
short time ago arrived at a pacifica beach where the body of an endangered whale washed ashore. they answered very important questions. our reporter is in pacifica. janet is it attracting a crowd? >> certainly. this is a very rare sight at pacifica beach and bringing a lot people all morning long and still, even here at this hour. the whale is resting on the shore about a mile from where we are at the point where several scientists have gathered. they are preparing to begin the necropsy to determine how the whale died. >> news of the dead whale brought a steady stream of onlookers this morning. >> i saw on the news that the whale was down here at our local beach and i said this is the only time i will be able to see something that is so beautiful. it was very big. very cool. >> the marine mammal center said
it was first spotted yesterday morning. researchers say it is believed to be an adult male measuring 47' long an endangered species. >> eight has some damage, looked like it was up against the rocks. i looked for signs of large wounds but i could not see anything. >> the necropsy will determine how the whale died but it can take up to six weeks if there is no immediate sign of trauma. quite the opposite case in 2008 when researchers say a sperm whale died from ingesting 450 pounds of trash. as far as how the car cause will be removed scientists have yet to figure that out. burying it would be an option or letting mother nature take its natural course. >> i grew up and there have been a few over the years so sometimes they leave them and the ocean takes them back out with the high tide.
scientists say they will be here all afternoon working around the tide to finish their work and the marine mammal center said in its four-year history it has responded to 17 dead whales found along northern california. thanks. happening today the last of hundreds of sea birds sickened by a mysterious goo in january about to be released. the bird will be the 165th sea bird nursed back to help and returned to the wild after hundreds were discovered. experts do not know what the material was but it was not oil. >> bay area parents opposed to bandtory vaccination are rallying right now in sacramento as lawmakers discuss the controversial childhood vaccination bill that could potentially effectivery child enrolled in -- effectivery child

former nfl star honor hernandez will spend the rest of his life in prison after being convicted of first-degree murder this morning. the body of lloyd was found in an industrial park in june of 2013. this morning his sister talked in court. >> the last couple of years have been the hardest time of my life >> at at the age of 25 i was asked to write my brother's eulogy. >> hernandez is expected to stand trial on double murder charges for a drive by shooting in 2012. >> today marks the second anniversary of the deadly boston marathon bombing. the boston mayor honored the victims and survivors of the bombing by raising an onary -- an honorary banner.
