a raging wildfire in alaska has called for evacuation of not only hundreds of residents but also thousands of sled dogs. yes, only in alaska. the wildfire has scorched an area where many recreational competitive mushers live. several racers lost their homes, rescued all their dogs but about 6500 acres have burned. the main highway between fairbanks and anchorage is closed. a girl lost her life on the magic mountain in southern california and was unconscious when the ride ended. the park says there's no evidence the girl's death was related to the ride, it has been

closed temporarily. revolution first opened nearly 40 years ago. turn to san diego now where the sheriff there is standing behind his deputy who was caught on camera using a taser on a 13-year-old boy. >> abc's linsey davis reports the video is going viral as the controversy swirls over just who's at fault. >> police brutality right here. >> reporter: as the video of the 13-year-old runaway tased by a san diego county sheriff's deputy is causing outrage, the sheriff is defending his deputy. >> in act wallty what we have really is how to control a juvenile. >> reporter: the sheriff says when the deputy approached a young group of kids skateboarding behind a shopping center, he recognized one as a runaway. the deputy says when he tried to get the boy to voluntarily return home, a scuffle ensued and he says the boy resisted. >> he bites the deputy's forearm. that's not the actions of someone complying with the deputy. >> what the [ bleep ]! >> reporter: the deputy tases the teen. the deputy reveals the bite marks.

the person who shot the video, seen her skateboarding, says it was excessive force, especially for a 13-year-old. the sheriff says based on the initial report it appears this was an appropriate use of force, but an investigation is now under way. that deputy remains on duty. linsey davis, abc news, new york. well, coming up -- breaking box office records. >> reporter: tropical storm bill hitting the texas coast this morning. winds intensifying overnight. the surf in galveston getting rougher by the minute. the biggest concern, downpours in a state already hit by flood disaster. over the past several weeks rain storms dumped 34 trillion gallons of water. leaving $45 million in damage behind. here's a reminder of the storms starting memorial day. an unforgettable deluge captured on camera in austin. and now it's deja vu. the biggest cities in texas on alert. >> the watershed -- >> bring you any important -- >> -- can't handle much water and it's going to go somewhere else and it's going to go in the streets. >> reporter: the threat level from houston's emergency management is heightened. the local government's nerve center activated. property owners fearing the worst. >> from the looks of it i don't think we're ready for what's about to come. >> reporter: the gulf region is not the only area getting hit. storms are flooding iowa rivers. and severe weather hitting chicago just before the stanley

cup game. as this tropical system moves north, a big area from corpus christi to the ohio valley could get flooded. here in texas the state has already had its wettest month ever and here comes this storm system with powerful winds and up to a foot of rain expected to fall in the hours ahead. kendis gibson abc news galveston, texas. that rain from tropical storm bill could fall at a very rapid rate. >> it could be disastrous. justin povick from accuweather. >> t.j. and reena, thanks and good morning. we have tropical storm bill lifting to the north and west at a generous clip. in fact, this is going to make landfall later this afternoon, north of brownsville, south of houston, in the general vicinity of corpus christi. and it's along the east of a track that we are very concerned about. choppy surf and extremely heavy rainfall rates. the center of circulation sitting right about here and underneath that center we have some very, very heavy rain coming down. rainfall rates in an hour could be approaching 3 inches. that's going to lead to some flash flooding throughout eastern texas and southeastern

oklahoma today. that area will continue to grow and lift north then east all throughout the week. some spots could top 10 inches. t.j. and reena, back to you. >> justin, thank you so much. the beach at oak island in north carolina remains open after two shark attacks this weekend. you won't find many people going into the water, however, there are additional patrols looking for the sharks or could be one shark even. that bit two young swimmers. each losing an arm. locals and officials say they can't remember the last serious shark attack in the area. and now there have been two in the same afternoon. well, the prison employee accused of helping two inmates escape back in court yesterday. joyce mitchell appeared before a judge wearing a jail uniform and a bulletproof vest. prosecutors say mitchell provided the men with speed bag boxing gloves, lighted eyeglasses and the blades and tools used to bust out of jail. there's been no confirmed sightings of the men since they escaped 11 days ago.

emergency responders were on hand when a flight from fiji landed yesterday at los angeles airport. a dozen passengers became violently ill during the flight, likely from norovirus. abc's david kerley reports. >> reporter: when the fiji jetliner touched down at l.a.x. a dozen americans reported being ill. the centers for disease control on the scene containing all 272 people on board. fire trucks and medics quickly surrounding the jetliner. of the 12 who reported symptoms of nausea and vomiting, a 19-year-old male requested to go to the hospital, taken by wheelchair to one of those waiting ambulances. the overnight flight landed from fiji a few minutes after its scheduled arrival. >> i was in the back so i didn't get to see too much of them, but feel bad for them. >> at the end they waited until they got off so we got to watch them walk out. >> reporter: all of the

passengers, including those reporting symptoms, were taken to a secure area. as cdc personnel looked for the cause of the illnesses. investigators have already learned that all 12 americans while not traveling together were all staying at the same hotel in fiji. all those on board have been released by the cdc. david kerley, abc news, washington. after days of scrutiny over her race, the head of spokane's naacp stepped down. rachel dolezal, you've seen a lot about her lately, posted her resignation on the chapter's facebook page. she did not answer allegations that she had been lying about being black. meanwhile, we're learning dolezal sued howard university in 2012 after earning her masters degree there, claiming she was discriminated against, partly because she's white. so employers rule still trumps colorado's marijuana law. the unanimous ruling from the state supreme court in a case involving off-duty pot smoking. the fired employee was a quadriplegic who had a state medical marijuana card. he was fired after failing a random drug test. the man calls the decision shocking but does not plan to

emergency? >> oh, my gosh! >> hello. >> someone's been attacked by a shark. >> reporter: this time a 16-year-old male victim also air lifted to a nearby hospital. he lost his arm. both are in stable condition, but the horror of the twin attacks even stunning authorities here. have you ever encountered an incident where you had two shark attacks, that kind of severity, in the same day? >> i have not encountered in my 16 years one shark attack. >> reporter: despite the attacks, the beaches remain open for business. we went up for our own bird's-eye view and saw families in the water. and the spot where a beach goer captured this picture of two fins in the shallows. >> we spotted a couple sharks close to the surf that were about seven foot long. >> reporter: about the approximate size they think may have attacked the kids? >> well, certainly similar to the size. >> reporter: sheriffs believe they're seven-foot bull sharks. he says if his deputies see those sharks from the helicopters or boats again, they are authorized to shoot them.

matt guzman abc news oak island, north carolina. we turn to another danger in the waters off the east coast. talking about stingrays. a boy was attacked in florida. stabbing him, left sticking out from his foot. the sixth grader's dad rushed him to the hospital where doctors were able to remove it. stingrays can remain almost invisible. difficult to see even in florida's crystal clear waters. texas braces for more heavy storms with tropical storm bill. the storm is expected to blow ashore today. by the time it's all over, they could see up to a foot of rain from galveston to dallas. many areas still recovering from last month's catastrophic flooding, expected to get hit again. accuweather justin povick has the storm track. good morning, justin. >> t.j. and reena, thanks. good morning. tropical storm bill continues to slowly organize. winds 50 to 55 miles per hour. movement to the north and the west toward corpus christi. but houston, galveston, get ready, you're going to receive some very heavy rainfall. choppy surf out there as well.

of the seal beach marine safety department says finding those sharks was especially easy because of this. a phantom drone the lifeguard agency had just started using to check out shark reports. >> we launched the drone and in about five minutes we spotted five or six sharks. we went down, zoomed in and filmed them. and then we cruised the whole area. and i think we probably saw about ten sharks in total. >> reporter: drones have generated some public outcry, raising privacy concerns. bailey says the department's drone will only be used over the water and for official business. beach goers we spoke with called the eye in the sky an added safety tool. >> no one wants to get eaten by a shark so, yeah drones are good. >> my kids like to boogie board and i get scared not being in out there with them, so, yeah i would like to know if there are sharks out there. >> reporter: at $1400, the drone isn't exactly cheap, but the chief will tell you, it sure saves a lot of time and money compared to the old way of checking out a shark sighting. >> we would send a lifeguard on

>> hello. >> there's someone bitten by a shark. >> reporter: the first attack happened 4:00 sunday afternoon with a girl bit in the arm and leg and had to be dragged out of the water by bystanders. 90 minutes later, another call after a 16-year-old boy was attacked by a shark. >> they said the head was about that big and it just came up and took his arm. >> reporter: officials say if not for randy and others who rushed to help, the outcome could have been much worse. although unusual, there have been six incidents on the atlantic coast in the last six weeks, two in this north carolina county. in a statement the mother of the 16-year-old boy thanked everyone for helping to save his life. doctors say he's now out of surgery and his condition has been upgraded from critical to fair. elizabeth hur, abc news, new york. the search for two escaped prisoners in new york state entering its 11th day now. the prison employee charged with helping the two men appeared in court again yesterday. there she is.

eyeglasses and the blades and tools used to bust out of jail. there's been no confirmed sightings of the men since they escaped 11 days ago. emergency responders were on hand when a flight from fiji landed yesterday at los angeles airport. a dozen passengers became violently ill during the flight, likely from norovirus. abc's david kerley reports. >> reporter: when the fiji jetliner touched down at l.a.x., a dozen americans reported being ill. the centers for disease control on the scene containing all 272 people on board. fire trucks and medics quickly surrounding the jetliner. of the 12 who reported symptoms of nausea and vomiting, a 19-year-old male requested to go to the hospital, taken by wheelchair to one of those waiting ambulances. the overnight flight landed from fiji a few minutes after its scheduled arrival. >> i was in the back so i didn't get to see too much of them, but feel bad for them. >> at the end they waited until they got off so we got to watch them walk out. >> reporter: all of the passengers, including those reporting symptoms, were taken to a secure area. as cdc personnel looked for the cause of the illnesses.

investigators have already learned that all 12 americans while not traveling together were all staying at the same hotel in fiji. all those on board have been released by the cdc. david kerley, abc news, washington. after days of scrutiny over her race, the head of spokane's naacp stepped down. rachel dolezal, you've seen a lot about her lately, posted her resignation on the chapter's facebook page. saying her separation is in the best interest of the naacp. she did not answer allegations that she had been lying about being black. meanwhile, we're learning dolezal sued howard university in 2012 after earning her masters degree there, claiming she was discriminated against, partly because she's white. so employers rule still trumps colorado's marijuana law. the unanimous ruling from the state supreme court in a case involving off-duty pot smoking. the fired employee was a quadriplegic who had a state medical marijuana card. he was fired after failing a random drug test. the man calls the decision
