moments ago at the mall. investigators are trying to determine if the fire is linked to another fire in the past weak that has been deemed "suspicious." eric thomas has that story. >> firefighters arriving at 5:00 am it was fully engulfed. four businesses at the corner of four oaks would be damaged or destroyed. >> the origins appeared to be in 9 barber shop and crews arrived on the scene and immediately started fire attack. >> this bartender was childrenning up the bar across the street weapon the ears perked up. >> i heard two explosions and i saw flames coming out of the parking lot and i hooked up and saw the barber shock that just recently opened and flames were coming out of the windows. >> the ferociousness and the possibility of the front collapsing weapon the firefighters out of the building trying to keep the flames from
jumping to an apartment complex. >> there is an alley between but embers can fly. we make sure the fire is contained to the strip mall. authorities have not characterized it as "suspicious," but arson is called to find a cause. the owner of the taco store said someone tried to set his business on fire in the past week using lighter fluid. authorities will not say if the two events could be related. today's fire destroyed the barber shop and three other businesses suffered smoke and water damage. >> we are happy to tell through is a positive ending to the sent for a missing five-year-old boy in mendocino county. he was found safe this morning. the family dog is reportedly the to thank, the sheriff tweeted out this picture a short time ago of bret and his black lab safe and sound. the lab saved by by -- stayed by the boy all night long. the marin search-and-rescue
assisted the crews with the overnight search in mendocino county. >> san jose police are investigating an early morning crash that killed a pedestrian. sky 7 was over the scene at the expressway. a car hit the pedestrian before 6:00 this morning. we confirm the driver stayed a the scene and is cooperating. investigators say the victim was a man but will not release his name until the family is notified. >> the california building standards commission is considering whether to overhaul building code standards after the deadly balcony collapse in berkeley. this afternoon, the commission will discuss a prepare am from berkeley city council to require corrosive resistant steel in balcony support. investigators found rotted wood had failed to support the victim's weight and that load to the collapse. six students were killed. most the students were from ireland. seven others were injured. >> you are looking at a water main break in lafayette. sky 7 was overhead on timber
lane near highland grove where water gushed out on to the street at 8:30 this morning. it went on like this for at least a half hour before crews capped it and a viewer said someone paid or asphalted over the shut off valve making it difficult to turn off the water. it is not clear if any homes were flooded and people living in the area near the lafayette reservoir lined sandbags around the property for protection. >> rescue crews are in the water at half moon bay. they are doing specialized training in preparation for the winter's el nino and maverick surfing competition. matt keller is at sea with the hard before master. matt? >> to give you an idea of where we are, we are half a mile away in maverick. the training is taking place in the bay. here's the rescuers who are going to be here when the big waves arrive. it will be inevitable a surfer will go down and they will need
help. it is smooth sailing off the point at half moon bay today. do not let the calm waters surprise you. rescue groups are ready for a turbulent winter. el nino is. coming. >> the possibility for more big waves, for more consistent periods of time, and with that, more people in the water and everything that may go from the land side to the water could be of concern. >> the window for the famous surfing contest opens november 1 through march 31, 2016. when the call goes up, 24 of the best conditioned big wave surfing professionals will take on the mountain of water that can reach up to 60' high. it is not just the surfers who need to be ready, the water rescue team will need to be in tiptop shape here to fit in with the other rescue teams. they have been in the water with the surfers before when no one is watching. >> there is obviously a scary
element to it but all gays all have tons of experience and we have been doing it for years and helping each other out. >> once the rescuers are out of the water they will go inside and go over different rescue scenarios. this training could come in handy soon. they expect big waves in the area by the end of the month. >> tough cut, right? >> as maverick organizers tackle the safety issues we are taking a closer look at how it will affect everyone in the bay water. >> meteorologist mike nicco has been digging up the news you need to know. >> first, we will dispel a el nino of what it is not. it is not a weather phenomenon. what it is, abnormally water water right here in white and red along the equator. this is influencing our weather pattern so a stronger el nino has potentially greater impact on our wet pattern pushing the
storms toward us. each individual storm is going to create its own wave. i cannot tell you right new if we are going to have a tremendous wave season but you would think with a stronger el nino if place more storms and heading to us we possibly could have a better maverick season than we have had during the drought. cheryl and kristen? >> police are warning a.t.m. users of a way you could fall victim to thieves. this is after the arrest of two men for taking advantage of bank customers who forget to do a simple thing after the transaction. amy hollyfield is in san leandro with the story. amy? >> yes, this is upsetting but we have you covered. we learned this is one thing you can do, one button to push, to better protect yourself. >> news of shoulder surfing happening to bank of america customers in san leandro as many of them feeling vulnerable. >> i have seen people using it and they are afraid.
it is something to be aware of. >> police say this have been five incidents of shoulder surfing reported since may four right here at this bank of america. shoulder surfing is when someone looks over your shoulder and reads your pin number and accesses your account. there is also a new twist to the crime. when the machine asks you if you would like another transaction? some people walk away leaving the transaction open and the criminal, then, swoops in and keeps it going. some customers admit they have made this mistake. >> you are in a hurry...though can use the a.t.m. good to know. it is kind of scary. >> police have set up surveillance video and made two arrests. investigators believe that 33 -year-old of oakland was shoulder surfing and they also arrested a 42-year-old watts and movie he stole from an a.t.m. machine but it is not clear? he shoulder surfed or use other

>> a 26-year-old man is also arrested after forces a flat to make an emergency landing. passengers took photos of the man escorted off the american airlines flight. police say he was drunk and disruptive. they met the plane at the gate. night attendants asked s men on board to restrain the man physical he was off. he was taken to a hotel. >> officials are very concerned about the growing number of people becoming ill after bacteria outbreak linked to san jose restaurant. the health department confirmed 93 people have shigella which could be linked to mariscos seafood restaurant similar to salmonella. santa cruz county is investigating suspected cases there, and whether they linked to the cases in santa clara county. dozens have become sick after eating at mariscos or coming into contact with sick patients. hand washing is important and officials worry there could be more victims pause symptoms can take up to a week to appear.

video with # abc7now. >> don't want to see the old perks. >> i cannot help you with the time travel. maybe if a couple of months we will get some lightning, maybe next week with a chance of rain. it is a possibility. it was fun to watch that. nice drive down memory lane and now looking to the bay, it looks picture-esque as we look to san francisco and the lack of fog. this is unlimited warmth and sunshine with the highs dip this weekend but, still, staying above average and a hint of rain on sunday and wednesday. we will tack about the winds and notice they are light and variable if not blowing off share. you can see fairfield at 12 miles per hour and 14 at half moon bay so you are rid of the fog and that was the only place along the peninsula coast and watch the winds as they try to eradicate that. you may see clouds off in the distance but a sun glasses day for all of us.
the big part shows the area of high pressure to our northeast sliding away from us but, still, having an affect on us as far as the 50 shore flow but you can see the storm track nearing us so we will have a few more high clouds and will not be completely sunny like we are today. even with the high clouds we will be under the glue of the warmer air mass. today it is putting our coast and into san francisco in the low-to-mid 70s and upper 70s around richmond and san mateo and the immediate neighborhoods and everyone else, like oakland, san jose, concord, all the way up to santa rosa and napa in the low-to-mid 80s. tonight it is another cool one, especially to the north, upper 40s napa, santa rosa, danville, possibly dublin and alamo in the upper 40s and everyone else in the low-to-mid 50s until richmond and antioch at 57 degrees. here is what is going do ham open saturday, watching an area of low pressure wandering off track here and yesterday it was looking a little bit closer to us and now you can see saturday evening and into sunday it is
