>> traffic is horrible. modesto. >> reporter: amazing fireworks, celebrating independence, american style. >> really was a great show. it's over. now the tough part, drive home. we're told traffic is backed up from here at north point and embarcadero all the way to the bay bridge. abc7 news. all fireworks are illegal in contra costa county but they're going off nonstop. why it's an enormous problem. kate. >> reporter: not only are their fireworks going off, police tell me people are shooting guns as well. spoke to fire investigator just in neighborhood in pittsburg, like a war zone. problem with fireworks used to
be bottle rockets and cherry bombs. now escalated to mortars, aerial professional fireworks so dangerous that the state fire marshal won't dispose of them, they use bomb squads to get rid of them. going off endlessly behind us. tough to turn a corner in the county without running into or driving next to illegal fireworks. the fire protection district says once the sun sets on the fourth, get hundreds of emergency calls. east county, antioch, pittsburg and bay point. >> on top of property loss probably see injury, a house catch fire because aerial fireworks. it doesn't have to be. >> reporter: can be extremely dangerous and costly. illegal fireworks started thez fires in brentwood and antioch
