the world health the world health organization has designated another version of covid to its variants of interest watch list. scientists say they have detected the mu variant. it behaves a bit like the delta variant where it gets past immunity by infections. joe rogan has canceled several shows because he has been diagnosed with covid. he says doctors threw, quote, the kitchen sink at the virus. he claims he is taking every kind of medication possible, including the horse dewormer ivermectin. with new cases across the country, the cdc is warning about travel across the labor day weekend. i spoke earlier with dr. yvonne maldonado. doctor, let's talk about the upcoming labor day weekend. the cdc is urging people to reconsider travel over the weekend. saying even vaccinated people

should consider the risk. why this warning now? >> what's happening now, we're seeing a big surge in delta variant cases, driven primarily by unvaccinated people. the cdc and others want to make sure that even vaccinated individuals are very careful about not getting infected. hospitals are really overwhelmed right now. we don't want to add more stress on the hospital system in the u.s. >> we've seen covid cases in children spiking. do you attribute that to schools reopening? >> absolutely not. the schools are not the source of transmission. unvaccinated people around children are the source of transmission. primarily in their communities. >> and there's the push for booster shots. two fishes have reportedly resigned in protest over the biden administration's plan to rush forward with boosters without prior approval.

do you think this will lead to booster shot hesitancy or more doubt among those refusing the vaccine? >> i think the fda and cdc are doing a good job at the ground level of analyzing the data. we've been looking at it. looks like a booster will be necessary. there's no rush. but a booster can be helpful in the near future. i don't think there's any problem with the safety or the effectiveness of the vaccines, if and when the booster is recommended. >> dr. maldonado, thank you. >> thanks so much. coming up, a reality show star fans are mourning the loss of one of relate tv's favorite couples. the prayers and well-wishes going out to the family of gregg leakes. and later, "this happened." the prayers being said by this four-legged member of this family. you're watching "world news now."

surrounded by all his children and wife nene leakes. he was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in 2018. he was in remission before it returned earlier this summer. posting this photo on instagram. andy cohen tweeting, i jokingly called him pastor leakes. but in truth, he was a strong voice of reason and commanded great respect among the entire "real housewives of atlanta" team. leakes sharing publicly that her husband's health had been deteriorating. >> if you see my son, he needs a lot of love. he has been transforming to the other side. >> reporter: married for 20 years, and unafraid of letting bravo fans in on the difficult parts of their lives, including gregg's cancer battle. >> i prayed to god and told him, if it's time, let's go. i don't fear death. i don't want to go. but if my work is finished here, take care of them.
