♪ oh what a wonderful world ♪ with an atmospheric river for the weekend hour by hour forecast coming up outraged tonight in hayward as nine schools could be closed in the next three years to cut costs. i'll tell you what the district is saying 30 years later the oakland hills fire storm. remember what tonight's tree lighting means to the victims of that fire racist graffiti homophobic explorers and physical attacks tonight at south bay community trying to stop the abc 7 news starts right now building a better bay area moving forward finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. tonight bay area residents are still feeling raindrops here and there as the first of several storms moves through but more serious weather systems are still on the way.

good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley and i'm a dates. let's get right to abc 7 news yeah, dan and almndhya patelndi. thviewsecau wreon we're experie. let me show you live picture and you will notice that it is slippery on the golden gate bridge live doppler 7 showing you some wet roadways in the east bay at this hour around alvarado niles road, union city paseo, padre parkway and fremont on the peninsula. you will notice from portola road out towards fairway drive and half moon bay still seeing some light rain this system from yesterday just stalled out. it's a light level one. system and feeding that moisture right into our area so when you look at the hourly forecast scattered showers for the 5 am commute start time and then moderate pockets as we head into 11 am a stronger storm this weekend with an atmospheric river may bring us rainfall in inches rainfall far over an inch in santa a quarter of an inch hayward you're looking at about just under a half an inch in san

francisco. so not bad. i'll be back with a full look at the hour by hour forecast going into the weekend coming up dan okay. sandy. thanks so muchnflnchwe, obvuslyn desperately in this parched state, but it also causing is causing some problems tonight fallen trees power outages and fender benders on slick roads. just some of the problems we've seen today. sirens combined with the sound of falling rain today in san rafael wet roads contributing to several crashes including this one on highway 101 involving four vehicles. we're inside in the kitchen and we just heard a loud crunch. we said what is that another crashing sound this time a large pine tree toppling into david burns yard in mill valley taking down power lines along with it. i just walked around the block and every other business is closed power outages affected several neighborhoods across the bay area. like here in oakland's montclair village, wherever businesses

without electricity had to shut down surface was restored hours later. i think it was scary outage is also left parts of a peninsula berkeley el cerrito and albany in the dark. pg&e says some of those outages are due to pole fires caused by rain turning dirt on the power lines into mud which conducts electricity and can start fires. san francisco got a good soaking. and warnings are going out as we prepare for even more rain a sandbag station is now open in santa rosa mill valley issued a winter storm alert on its website. there is reason for concern and some of these burn scars that a lot of northern california has experiencing right now. thousands of people on the bay area are without power tonight. this is a look at pg&e's outage map right now the green dots indicate relatively small outages. everything else is a larger outage right now. the biggest outages are near fremont and newark more than 8,000 customers are without power the cause of most of these

is under investigation. and remember you can always check live doppler 7 and the weather conditions where you live on our abc 7 news app anytime it's free to download in the app store just search abc 7 news bay area tonight a lot of upset parents in hayward sounded off in a town hall about school closures digging into approaches to education is a key part of our efforts to build a better bay area the district recently announced plans to possibly close or consolidate nine schools because of a major funding shortfall abc 7 news reporter jr. stone has more on parents specific worries. wednesday evening hundreds of hayward community members attended this town hall zoom meeting about a plan. the district says would close and cons. a these nine schools over the next three years and an additional five according to these charted plans parents teachers and even students sounding off and one of my teachers are going to work in doordash and over that's unacceptable, but while jobs are

a concern the superintendent says that no teacher would lose their position alshatthe a majos that need to be addressed we yes, we have a budget shortfall of 14 million dollar. it's even if that's addressed. we have the 900 million dollars in facility repairs. we need to make which we just don't have those resources school administrators referencing this graph that shows the gradual decline of students in hayward unified since 2005 5,500 fewer student. now attend parents and teachers though not happy about a plan to close neighborhood schools. they say this move will disproportionately affect minority families in many locations. it's an attack in our community to the time when we're still of dealing with all of the social emotional impact of covid how many people can you jam in there? and how many people should you put in? there are two totally different numbers? that's not playing y'all playing games. y'all need to just stop between us and the other two schools are

a couple freeways. so they're what are they going to do? they can't walk they're gonna have to bus, how much does that cost? you can't get bus drivers in this day and age school officials say they are evaluating that and the other points made here so that they can vote on a finalized measure by the end of the year jr. stone. abc 7 news the pandemic now the food and drug administration has authorized booster shots for people who receive the moderna or johnson & johnson vaccines, but it's not a done deal yet a cdc advisory committee and the agency's directors still have to give their sign-off on that plan this week. the fda is recommending boosters of moderna at least six months after the second shot for many people considered high risk jnj booster can be given at least two months after the original shot the fd. as it will also allow people to get a different brand booster mixing and matching in other words than their original vaccine also today the white house detailed plans to get shots into the arms of kids ages 5 to 11.

the biden administration says it has enough supply to vaccinate 28 children, they're enlisting pediatricians schools and pharmacies to administer shots and fda advisory committee is scheduled to meet next week to consider pfizer's emergency use authorization request a cdc advisory panel will meet the week after that new developments tonight involving a death at a fish concert in the chase center. san francisco will now conduct a safety review the department of building inspections is responding to a complaint claiming the guardrails are not high enough and that the steps are too steep in the upper arena. say a man from new york died during sunday's concert and may have jumped from a balcony. chase center says the venue is up to state code tonight cal fire announced the estrada fire in santa cruz. county present contained fire broke out friday when a prescribed 20 acre burn jumped after winds picked up near watsonville spread to 148 acres no structures were damaged in that fire more trouble for pg&e tonight. five northern california

counties are suing the utility for damage done by the deadly dixie fire the dixie fire broke out in july and burned more than 963,000 acres plumas butte lassen shasta and tehama counties are suing for damages for lost revenues increased expenses and destruction of interest structure among other things their lawsuit alleges pg&e. equipment caused the fire cal fire says the cause is still under investigation. however in a statement tonight pg&e says in part we have not been able to review all of the evidence cal fire collected as we've said previously pg&e believes. we operated our system prudently. now to a moving ceremony to mark the 30th anniversary of the deadly oakland hills firestorm the tree of hope was lit to honor those who lost their lives abc 7 news reporter kate larsen was at the ceremony tonight where families of victims shared their memories. thirty years ago to date hills of oakland in berkeley caught fire two months after the

there has to be a threat there has to be a a battery lately palo alto has seen a string of hate crimes and hate incidents racist graffiti. covered in a public bathroom more at a downtown parking garage a customer's racist tirade directed at a restaurant owner and most recently the arrest of this man who police say was rolling anti-gay slurs and fighting with people downtown wednesday's community conversation meant to give residents the confidence to report incidents and the background to understand how these crimes are investigated and prosecuted hate crimes are one of the few crimes one of the only crimes proving motive is imperative among the hate crime cases brought to the da's office so far this year deputy district attorney. erin west says the asian community is suffering the most so far eight cases considered to be the most violent reasons why councilman greg tanaka says, he's remained a vocal advocate. he's kind of and since keep on happening, right and without without do justice, and he's not
