bomb threats forced evacuations at several

universities overnight, clearing out a number of buildings at m.i.t., usc and nyu. police in all three cities gave the all clear after they found no evidence to substantiate threats. these are the latest in threats to universities including yale, columbia and cornell. britney spears may be on the brink of regaining control over her life. overnight, britney spears' fiance posted this video showing them wearing free britney shirts. andrea fujii has more. >> reporter: this morning the free britney movement may finally come to fruition as a judge could end her conservatorship that's been in place for 14 years. jamie spears, her father, had been in control of her estimated $60 million estate until late september when the judge suspended him as her conservator and appointed a temporary one. and today's hearing could end the conservatorship all

together. britney wrote earlier in the week in a since-deleted instagram post, this week is going to be very interesting for me. ♪ my life has been so overprotected ♪ >> reporter: last summer the nearly 40 year old singer told the court that she was in an abusive conservatorship, claiming, i was scared of my dad. in late october, her lawyer filed a motion to end the conservatorship. and she has pleaded with the court to let her have her life back. since its inception in 2008, jamie spears has fought to remain conservator. but in a recent change of heart he agreed to the motion, his lawyer saying jamie will do everything he can to protect and care for her. jamie believes that the conservatorship should end immediately. and with no objections, abc's dan abrams expects britney to finally be free. >> i think it's likely now that on november 12 we will see the end of the conservatorship or at

least the wheels rolling to exactly how that conservatorship is going to end. >> reporter: britney spears is expected to attend today's hearing virtually, meanwhile, her attorney may be looking to pursue criminal charges against her father, jamie spears, after a "new york times" documentary report found evidence of alleged illegal surveillance. mona, andrew? an australian man out for a day of fishing ended up in the hospital. he says a crocodile between 13 and 15 feet long suddenly appeared and lunged at him. he grabbed onto a tree branch, but the croc clamped down on his boots. he repeatedly stabbed the beast in the head with a pocket knife and it let go. the odds of doing that successfully is nearly zero. >> but not zero. >> clearly not zero. he was the one. woo, i don't want to be the two. coming up, ginger zee shows us the future of wind power.

♪ so i ride like the wind ♪ so i ride like the wind ♪ ♪ ride like the wind ♪ well, it makes up only 8% of our energy grid, but wind is the nation's largest renewable energy resource. >> ginger zee takes us to the oldest offshore wind farm. >> reporter: the offshore wind market is exploding. when it comes to offshore wind, america is pretty late, but it's not too late, and there is a one state doing a lot of work so we can catch up. they're fully committed in rhode island. rhode island is home to the nation's largest offshore wind farm. but to get there, we have to take this ferry from narragansett to block island.

each one of the turbines is a half-mile apart. five, six gigawatt giants. four legs that drill into the seabed and they power the entire island. 600 feet, that's big, but these are not even close to what we can do in the future. >> it's only six megawatt turbines these ones. the ones we are putting in are more than double the size. >> reporter: up until four years ago, all of block island was powered by diesel fuel. they would burn a million gallons every year. but now block island is powered by these. five offshore wind turbines that can produce enough energy for 17,000 homes. but wind energy isn't the magic bullet for energy production. >> this is a very, very good supplement to the grid, but it's not the only solution to power production. >> reporter: rhode island governor daniel mckee believes the ocean state can be a wind hub. he wants rhode island to be 100%

efficient from renewables by 2030. statue starting by more turbines by 2023. >> that's going to give us 25% of our electric needs for the state of rhode island.2023. >> that's going to give us 25% of our electric needs for the state of rhode island. the equivalent of 270,000 homes will be powered. >> reporter: the production of energy, the future of wind, it's all great, especially when you get the added bonus of reducing emissions. block island alone produces 40,000 less tons of co2 per year. and then the question everybody asks. then what happens to them. if we're about to put so many in, what happens 30 years from today? >> everything can be reused. as of now, the industry is reusing everything from a turbine except for the blades. >> reporter: but now even the blades have an answer. the national energy renewable laboratory has developed a 100% recyclable blade that can be refabricated on site. winds of change blowing into america's power grid.
