there is also news tonight about this year's flu season. what they're seeing in children and in adults. the age groups most at risk. tonight, tom brady and gisele bundchen divorcing. what they both said today and what brady said this week about playing the rest of the season. and arbitrating a rock and roll pioneer. ♪ goodness gracious great balls of fire ♪ tonight, remembering jerry lee lewis. >> announcer: from abc news world headquarters in new york, this is "world news tonight," with david muir. good evening. it is great to have you with us here as we near the end of another week together, and we begin tonight with that brutal attack on speaker nancy pelosi's husband. an assailant breaking into the couple's san francisco home, armed with a hammer. sources telling abc news shouting "where's nancy?" the attacker then targeting her 82-year-old husband, paul pelosi, instead. he is out of surgery tonight to repair a skull fracture. tonight leaders from both parties condemning the assault. police say they arrived at pelosi's home after being

alerted to the break-in moments before the attack. then officers actually witnessing the assault as it was happening. paul pelosi suffering, quote, significant injuries, undergoing surgery to his skull. the alleged suspect arrested on the scene, now facing multiple charges including attempted homicide. and what was discovered on his social media page? authorities say conspiracies about the 2020 election and about covid. the couple married for 59 years, the parents of five children. tonight there is news coming in on paul pelosi's condition, and abc's mola lenghi on the scene in san francisco. >> reporter: tonight, the brutal attack inside speaker of the house nancy pelosi's home. her husband, paul pelosi, beaten with a hammer in the middle of the night. police and the fbi believe speaker pelosi was the intended target. a man identified by police as 42-year-old david depape, breaking into the pelosis' san francisco home. sources telling abc news the suspect entered through a glass door, shouting, "where's nancy, where's nancy?" speaker pelosi was not home, but

her 82-year-old husband paul was. the men coming face to face. police arriving on scene around 2:30 a.m., moments before the violent attack. witnessing it firsthand. >> our officers observed mr. pelosi and the suspect both holding a hammer. the suspect pulled the hammer away from mr. pelosi and violently assaulted him with it. our officers immediately tackled the suspect, disarmed him, took him into custody, requested emergency backup and rendered medical aid. >> reporter: pelosi and the suspect both taken to the hospital. the speaker's office saying he is expected to make a full recovery. the alleged attacker facing multiple charges, including attempted homicide, burglary, and assault with a deadly weapon. the suspect's online social media pages show multiple false conspiracy theories relating to covid-19, the 2020 election, and the federal government. a heavy law enforcement presence at the home as san francisco police, capitol police, and the fbi are now jointly investigating.

authorities still trying to determine a motive. the white house saying the president and nancy pelosi spoke over the phone and "the president is praying for paul pelosi and for speaker pelosi's whole family." lawmakers from both parties immediately condemning the attack. senate minority leader mitch mcconnell tweeting he is "horrified and disgusted" and "grateful to hear that paul is on track to make a full recovery." the suspect's alleged call for pelosi chillingly similar to the chants during the january 6th attack on the capitol. >> nancy! [ bleep ]. oh, nancy! >> we're coming in if you won't bring her out! >> reporter: just two months ago, a rioter who carried a gun into the capitol and threatened speaker pelosi was sentenced to more than seven years in prison. several men have been convicted in recent years of threatening the speaker, and the pelosi home was vandalized last year. with just 11 days until midterm elections, the attack comes as

threats of violence against lawmakers is at an all-time high. capitol police investigating some 9,600 cases of concerning statements and threats just last year. more than doubling since 2017. in the wake some lawmakers have sought additional protection for their families, and this year some government funding has been provided for lawmakers' homes. paul and nancy pelosi have been married 59 years and have five adult children. they've lived in their home since 1987. the pelosi family and the district attorney tonight praising the police response. >> i do want to commend the san francisco police department for their immediate response to this home and for swiftly making sure that mr. pelosi was okay and that the suspect was apprehended. >> all of this very unsettling no matter what your politics are in this country. and mola lenghi joins us live tonight from san francisco right outside the pelosi home. and mola, we know the investigation still going on at this hour. a new statement just in tonight from speaker pelosi's office.

after surgery to paul pelosi's skull of course the question how's he doing tonight. what are authorities saying? >> reporter: well, david, his injuries are serious. the speaker's office says he suffered a fractured skull, serious injuries to his arms and hands. he has undergone what's being described as a successful surgery to repair his skull, and they say that he is expected to make a full recovery, david. >> so many questions on this, mola. we know speaker pelosi was in washington. was there security at the home or not? because she wasn't there. and i gather there's talk tonight of heightened security moving forward not only for the pelosis but for other leaders who have faced these threats? >> reporter: yeah, that remains a question, whether there was a police presence here, a security presence at the time of the break-in. that remains a question. and also there's a question of whether there was any security camera footage either at the pelosis' home or some of their neighbors' homes. that remains to be seen, david. >> mola lenghi leading us off on a friday night. mola, thank you. now to the suspect tonight. we're learning more about the assailant. this case among thousands of

threats to lawmakers and public officials in this country right now under investigation. i want to turn to our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas with us live from washington. perre, you were telling us law enforcement now scrubbing through the suspect's past. what have you learned tonight? >> reporter: david, tonight the fbi is doing a deep dive investigation into this man. agents are seeking search warrants for any phones, computers or other devices that might be associated with david depape. and investigators are interviewing family, friends and associates. authorities are examining a number of social media posts that appear to be connected with depape, espousing a range of false conspiracies about covid-19 vaccines, the 2020 election and the january 6th congressional hearings, david. >> and this was stunning too, pierre, what you and your team reported in late today. authorities are also warning about the potentially dangerous chatter among extremist groups just today online in the wake of ths attack, celebrating the attack? >> reporter: they're keeping a wary eye on those reports that extremists were actually celebrating this attack in the dark corners of social media. and tonight a new homeland

security bulletin warns that domestic extremists pose a heightened threat to the upcoming midterm elections. and there's been a dramatic surge in threats not just aimed at judges but also congress members as well, david. >> all right. pierre thomas in washington as well tonight. pierre-i know you'll stay on this. thank you. of course all this comes amid growing scrutiny on this potentially dangerous rhetoric only growing in this country. and tonight elon musk has taken over twitter. he has promised to restore banned accounts including former president trump's. tonight what he's now saying about all of this. here's our chief business correspondent rebecca jarvis. >> reporter: tonight with the level of potentially dangerous political rhetoric higher than ever a new leader of twitter. the world now watching what elon musk will do with the platform. musk, who walked into twitter hq this week carrying a literal sink, to let it sink in that he's the boss, tweeting today "the bird is freed. wasting no time cleaning the

birdcage, firing the ceo, cfo and chief legal counsel." >> i think it was very clear that elon wanted to shake up the leadership of twitter. >> reporter: musk also wants to shake up the platform itself vowing in a ted talk earlier this year to remove permanent bans including the one placed on former president donald trump's account after the january 6th insurrection. trump has insisted he has no interest in coming back to the platform since he has his own, truth social. but he congratulated musk, writing "i am very happy that twitter is now in sane hands." but not everyone is happy. >> advertisers have been worried about their brands appearing next to controversial tweets. >> reporter: ads are twitter's main source of revenue. before officially taking over, musk trying to allay those fears. tweeting "twitter obviously cannot become a free-for-all hellscape where anything can be said with no consequences." and the bottom line, david, it doesn't look like most banned

accounts are coming back anytime soon. musk tweeting tonight that he's forming a content moderation council of wildly diverse viewpoints before making any decisions and then following up in a second tweet that anyone suspended for minor or dubious reasons will have their accounts restored. david? >> all right. rebecca jarvis tonight. thank you, rebecca. in the meantime we're going to turn now to the unsettling scene in south florida. the emergency evacuation of a miami beach high-rise. residents were given just two hours to get out after inspectors found unsafe structural conditions. so what was discovered underneath the building? and this condo building is just two miles from the surfside condo that collapsed one year ago. abc's faith abubey is in florida tonight. >> reporter: tonight this 14-story miami beach condo tower cleared out after officials deemed it structurally unsafe and ordered residents to leave imme immediately. >> i didn't think it would get to a point where we might have to go. >> reporter: residents warned on wednesday about the possibility of an evacuation. at the 164-unit port royale.

but given only two hours to gather their belongings a day later, dozens scrambling. in a letter obtained by abc news, engineers noting damage to one of the main beams in the parking garage, adding "we believe this beam and the other beams located in the third floor garage might support the entire building structure." tonight resident miraj markej sharing these images of what he says show extensive damage. markej who says he worked in the construction busines for 20 years as a general contractor, telling me this. >> i took photos. i tried to convince the board and to start taking action. but they had the building engineer, it was very hard to work with this management and the board members. >> reporter: the port royale, less than two miles from where the surfside condo tower collapsed over a year ago, killing 98 people. and david, it's unclear when residents will be able to come back home but engineers estimate it will take at least ten days to secure the building for further inspection. and tonight a miami beach

and bundchen writing "the decision to end a marriage is never easy but we have grown apart." bundchen had previously been outspoken about her concern over how football would impact brady's health. >> that kind of aggression, like all the time, that could not be healthy for you, right? and i'm planning on having him be healthy and do a lot of fun things when we're like 100 i hope. >> reporter: in february, brady announced he was retiring from the sport, saying he was going to spend more time with his wife and children, only to change his mind 40 days later. but even football has become tumultuous for brady. with his team off to the worst start of his career, there's been speculation he might leave the nfl midseason. >> there's no immediate retirement in my future. and i told them in march i was playing and i've never quit on anything in my life. >> there's been no details revealed on how the couple's assets may be split. both brady and bundchen estimated to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars. david? >> there are a lot of eyes on this. trevor, thank you.

tonight there is news coming in of a possible break in a case that made national headlines. police reportedly making an arrest in connection with the murders of two teenage girls in delphi, indiana. five years after their bodies were discovered near a hiking trail sources now tell our affiliate there wrtv in indianapolis that a local man is now in custody. abc news has not confirmed the report, but one of the families said they will address this in the coming da. fo monday. a grainy image of a potential suspect, you'll remember, had been found on the phone of one of the girls. the cdc tonight now reporting hospitalizations for the flu reporting moderate or high levels of flu activity. you can see it in red. the worst from texas to the carolinas. then moving into the northeast now. flu especially hitting adults 65 and older and children 4 and younger. more than 2300 people newly hospitalized with flu-like symptoms just this week.
