>> a high stakes hearing at the nation's high court today, as the u.s. supreme court justices heard oral arguments in a case over president trump's attempts to end birthright citizenship through an executive order. good evening. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm karina nova. birthright citizenship is enshrined in the 14th amendment of the constitution, saying anyone who's born in the united states is a citizen, regardless of the legal status of their parents. >> abc seven news political reporter monica madden listened in as the high court took on this case today. she joins us with what's at stake. monica. >> a birthright citizenship has bay area roots. this was decided in the 1898 landmark wong kim ark case. he was the child of chinese immigrants, but born in san francisco, and the u.s. supreme court then found that people like kim ark have the constitutional right to citizenship, with a few exceptions. but trump and his allies say the principle is wrong and are using all legal tools to challenge this precedent.

>> from the nation's. >> capital to the bay area. demonstrators thursday protested president donald trump's attempts to end birthright citizenship. >> they'll come for birthright citizenship, and they'll keep coming. they'll keep chipping away. >> it coincides with oral arguments on the case at the u.s. supreme court thursday. >> the president is violating an established, not just one, but by my count, four established supreme court precedents. >> but justices are not weighing the constitutionality of trump's executive order. rather, if lower court judges went too far by blocking his order nationwide, when this lawsuit only stems from 22 states. >> so the question is, can you do a national injunction? and the difficulty here is that you're talking about a national constitution. birthright citizenship applies nationally. and the 14th amendment, it's a national executive order by the president. >> justices wrangled with what

their ruling could do. conservatives who were largely skeptical of allowing judges to block this order nationwide, also questioned if birthright citizenship was only blocked in some states. >> what do hospitals do with a newborn? what do states do with a newborn? >> i don't think they do anything different. what the executive order says in section two is that federal officials do not accept documents that have the wrong designation of citizenship from people who are subject to the executive order. >> how are they going to know that. >> the states can continue to? the federal officials will have to figure that out. >> how how do you think they will. logistically address these two issues? >> very good example of how complicated legal questions can be. and i don't think the justices really know what they want to do. >> a decision is expected by the end of june, but that likely will not be the last of this. if justices side with trump on this case, it will create a patchwork of rules where birthright citizenship is banned in some

states, but not all based on which ones are suing. and the high court will still likely need to address the core question in these cases can the president do this? live in the studio. monica madden, abc seven news. >> all right, monica, thank you. in the east bay, immigrant rights advocates and legal experts gathered outside the concord immigration court today. they spoke out about president trump's birthright citizenship order and the plan to expand immigrant detention centers. abc seven news reporter anser hassan has that story. >> enfrentan muchisimas dificultades. >> sergio lopez stood in front of the immigration court in concord to share his firsthand account of navigating the system. >> i also was in a detention center for about six months. so imagine all the trauma that you can get inside a place. >> after a five year battle. lopez was granted asylum in 2023. he now works with the contra costa immigration rights

alliance, an organization raising concerns about challenges undocumented immigrants face under the current trump administration. >> this immigration court is doing whatever it takes. the government also is doing whatever it takes to people. either they got the poor or self-deport. >> immigration courts are actually administrative courts that are branches of the executive branch of the government. so this is not an independent court here. >> alizadeh is with stand together contra costa, a group that works with the public defender's office to assist those at risk of deportation. a top concern allegations of misinformation. they say one example posters calling for people to self-deport. >> there are misleading and inaccurate signs that are posted inside the courthouse, ostensibly by ice, that are trying to confuse migrants into giving up their due process rights. >> immigration attorney sean

shows multiple people being taken into custody. upt represent thousands of workers across the university of california system, and says this demonstration was to call attention to a staffing crisis. they are also accusing the uc system of unfair labor practices. we have reached out to the university of california system and ucsf police and are waiting for a response. >> the california department of justice is investigating a deadly police shooting in south san francisco. police say a man was acting erratically and trying to break into a public restroom near the oyster point marina last night when officers arrived on scene. authorities say the man ran away holding what they thought looked like a gun. after chasing him near the water, police say they tried to use less lethal options to stop the man. he then pointed the object he was carrying at the three officers who fired. authorities say the object turned out to be a replica gun. >> the family of a georgia woman who was found alive yesterday in the sierra is now headed to california and will reunite with her. tomorrow, the fresno county

sheriff's office says 27 year old tiffany slaton was found safe near lake edison yesterday afternoon. it had been almost a month since her family last heard from her. the owner of a resort was checking on his property after the snow cleared when he discovered slaton inside one of his cabins. >> she pops out, didn't say a word, just ran up, and all she wanted was a hug. she told us it was a blizzard and the she pushed through that blizzard, and the first thing she saw was a cabin. and she held up in the cabin through the night. >> could you imagine? he says he left the cabin unlocked to offer shelter in case of a situation just like this. slaton was dehydrated, but otherwise okay. >> so glad it worked out that way. the bay area's biggest bike celebration is back today. it's the 31st annual bike to work, bike to wherever day. the idea is to encourage people to bike for their commute, errands, or recreation. all nine bay area counties held community events to support riders. today.

cross examined cassie ventura. >> earlier this week. she testified about the abuse she experienced during the time that she dated him. >> he has pleaded not guilty to federal charges of sex trafficking and racketeering. abc news reporter reena roy has more on day three of the trial. >> defense attorneys for sean diddy combs grilling cassie ventura on the witness stand, arguing she was a willing participant in his swingers lifestyle and not sex trafficked during her 11 year relationship

with combs. his legal team presenting a 2009 text from ventura to combs, saying, i'm always ready to freak off, referring to those alleged drug fueled sex marathons. the defense also showing the jury explicit and graphic texts between the two, hoping to prove that she was an eager sexual partner who matched combs desires. >> they have developed several themes, and those themes are. cassie was in control, cassie consented and cassie benefited. and you saw that corroborated through all of the texts and all of the emails where cassie is actually saying, yes, i would like to participate in the so-called freak offs. >> jurors also saw texts showing love and connection, one from ventura to combs from 2010 that says, i love you so much it consumes my life. the defense also showing a text from march of 2017 when ventura told combs quote, i love our foes, referring to freak offs when we both wanted ventura testifying today that her saying loving freak offs were just words at that point. she has testified that at first she was open to

try freak offs, but as time went on, she felt she had no choice but to participate, that combs would get violent with her if she didn't. she spoke extensively about this 2016 video in a los angeles hotel. when ventura testified she was trying to escape a freak off, she says combs chased her down, threw her to the ground and stomped on her. cross examination is expected to last until noon on friday. then prosecutors will get their chance for their redirect. reena roy, abc news, new york. >> the l.a. county sheriff's office confirmed today it is investigating criminal allegations against music legend smokey robinson. last week, four of robinson's former housekeepers filed a lawsuit alleging he sexually assaulted and raped them while they worked for him. the suit also alleges labor violations illegally, long hours and lack of pay. robinson's attorney says the singer welcomes the investigation, saying it will prove robinson did nothing wrong. >> coming up, super mario and his friends have officially arrived in san francisco's union

camera? some people have that idea. it is absolutely beautiful. you see those wispy clouds? a lot of sun. nice day to be out there. temperatures are up by anywhere from two degrees in san jose to seven degrees in santa rosa. check out the numbers so far. we have gotten up into the mid 80s. right now it's in the low 80s in places like fairfield and brentwood, low 60s coast side, high pressure has just nudged in close enough to us to bring us that warmth. now, as we take a look at live doppler seven, there are some high clouds that have been passing through filtering the sunshine. as you can see from our sutro tower camera tomorrow. mild to warm again. weekend forecast will feature gusty winds and fire concerns for parts of the bay area. and then summerlike heat is coming next week. temperatures up into the 90s. not tomorrow, don't worry. so here's a look at this evening 70 inland 50s coastside as we head into eight o'clock hours. still pretty comfortable. and then tomorrow morning, a lot of high clouds passing through the region. later on in the afternoon, our warmest locations will pop up into the 80s once again, but the coast will remain

in the 50s, 40s and 50s to start the day because of those high clouds. we'll call it partly cloudy in the morning tomorrow afternoon. upper 50s coast side, where it will be a little breezy like it is today, low to mid 80s inland. those temperatures will dial back a few degrees for most locations along the coast and the bay. here comes a trough on saturday. might be a few sprinkles around monterey. if you're traveling there in the sierra, it's going to be a mix of showers, high elevation snow, and some thunderstorm probabilities here in the bay area. that trough is going to kick up the winds. so solano county goes under a fire weather watch sunday morning to monday night. gusts to 35 miles an hour out of the north. very drying wind. relative humidity drops 15 to 25%, so any fires that develop could quickly grow. so keep that in mind. 8:00 in the morning saturday. those winds are picking up over 30 miles an hour, and everybody is going to be in on this, even though some areas will be stronger. 4:00 saturday, close to 40 there in san francisco, 43 point reyes sunday afternoon. and notice

it's still gusty sunday night before the wind switches direction and comes more out of the north focusing on our hills. and that's what's going to set the stage for much warmer weather next week. the accuweather seven day forecast spring warmth with us tomorrow. windy and cooler and cloudier saturday will warm it back up sunday, but it's still going to remain gusty. heat is going to be spiking next week. karina and we're going to see 90s inland 60s coast side. so i think you guys will like what you see. >> yeah, that's when we're heading to the beach. >> oh that sounds good. thanks, sandy. and it's pretty good weather for sunday. that's because. >> this sunday is bay to breakers, and about 15,000 participants will take part in the annual san francisco tradition. running roughly seven miles across the city from the bay side to the breakers at ocean beach. the route begins at howard and main, heading down main and up ninth street. from there, the route goes down hayes street and bell street before continuing through golden gate park, ending at ocean beach.
