a little bit of a clearer shot there, you can see. not as cloudy as you were this time yesterday. current temperatures right now. pretty uniform in the low and mid 50s as we begin your thursday. now any cloud cover we have out there is pretty much gone by about 830. so we see sunshine in a big way today. temperatures already feel pretty mild here by 1230 in the 70s and 80s in our warmest areas. and later on this afternoon, temperatures back above average for this time of the year. even along the coast. we'll see a fair amount of sunshine later on today. so a high of 70 in the city today. it's warm, 76 in oakland, 80 in san jose, even warmer in santa rosa at 90 degrees. hit about 88 in antioch this afternoon. tomorrow, though, gets even hotter. a heat advisory will be in effect. a closer look at your friday afternoon temperatures coming up in eight minutes. let's check in with francis and see how things are going. >> hey, it's growing pretty well drew out there. there haven't been any major problems, but since the bay bridge metering lights were turned on around 540

this morning, the backup has grown just now to the end of the parking lot, or just a little bit beyond that, and the drive time has slowed down. also on westbound 80 from highway four to san francisco, it's now read at 50 minutes, so that's a bit of a slow ride. however, in the north bay, coming from san rafael into san francisco, you'll see here traffic is light, no delays. southbound on the right hand side as you make your way down to the golden gate bridge, the slowest drive time in the bay area right now is on westbound 580, coming out of tracy to dublin. that is 48 minutes. there's also still a high wind advisory for the altamont pass. and as you make the drive on southbound 101 san francisco, san rafael to san francisco, 15 minutes right now, reggie. >> san francisco school leaders are now backing off a plan to change how some high school teachers grade student work following widespread backlash. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez has been following the story. she's in the newsroom,

gloria. >> good morning. equitable grading drew criticism from elected leaders in san francisco and beyond. congressman ro khanna called it a betrayal of the american dream, and parents have also spoken out against the plan. the san francisco unified school district superintendent says she decided not to pursue this strategy of equitable grading. yesterday, the chronicle says the district was going to test this out in a voluntary program, and that some changes would have included giving students multiple chances to take tests or redo essays. the strategy uses a 0 to 4 scale instead of 0 to 100. ten years ago, the san leandro school district changed its grading policy to reflect equitable grading practices, and in 2020, the castro valley unified school district started the transition. former educator joe feldman said that he saw a need to improve traditional grading practices. he wrote the book grading for equity. >> and in equitable grading, the grade doesn't reflect anything except what the student has learned of what was taught in the course. if my parent signs

my syllabus, if my parent comes to back to school night, if i raise my hand uh- everything that i do in a class is incorporated into the grade. >> and he says his research shows a grade should be less about accumulating points and more about what the student has actually learned. san francisco mayor daniel lurie and san jose mayor matt mehan both posted on social media against this grading. mehan is a former teacher and says that lowering standards hurts children. live in the newsroom gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> all right, gloria, thank you. the california. >> state track and field championships happening this weekend continue to cause controversy nationwide. >> the president is threatening to withhold federal funding if a transgender athlete is allowed to compete. the governing body of california high school sports recently changed its rules, trying to make it fair for both transgender athletes and everyone else. the new rule is an athlete assigned female at birth, would have won a medal, but lost to a trans athlete, but

lost to a trans athlete will be awarded the medal anyway. parents of one of the competitors who support trans athletes competing say the issue should have been addressed sooner. >> in my mind, i think the state really probably has have failed both, both athletes. i think girls should be able to compete fairly against other girls. >> and girls are already discriminated. and now adding this to the layers of complexity. >> the parents believe there should be a separate category for trans athletes. a spokesperson from california governor newsom's office said that they find the rule change respectable, reasonable and respectful. now to some news developing overnight out of oakland, where police arrested a driver who they say hit and killed a pedestrian after being chased by the chp. the pursuit started just before 8:00 last night, about a mile south of lake merritt. oakland police tell us during the chp chase, the driver hit another car at park boulevard and east 21st street, leaving one person hurt.

>> the vehicle fled from that scene. chp canceled their pursuit, but their air unit continued to watch from overhead. that vehicle sped off. >> it all ended on 12th street, where the driver ran over two pedestrians. one died and the other is in the hospital. oakland police say they are investigating the deadly crash. >> two vta bus passengers are recovering this morning after a crash with an suv in gilroy. authorities say none of the injuries are serious. the crash happened just after seven last night near monterey and hausen. the suv driver was taken to the hospital and was later detained as police investigate the cause of the crash. >> california is one step closer to implementing high speed cameras around freeway construction zones. state leaders are hoping the cameras will help protect construction workers. in the last three years, data shows more than 100 vehicle intrusions in active work zones, resulting in at least five deaths and serious

injuries. >> move one distracted driver and someone doesn't go home. i've seen a lot out there. close calls, crashes and unfortunately, a few fatalities. that never leaves my memory. >> the bill would place 75 mobile speed cameras in active highway construction zones. this is similar to san francisco's safety camera pilot program. speeding tickets would range from 50 to $500. when drivers go 11 to 15 miles over the speed limit. the bill will move into the full assembly before june 6th. >> officials behind california's last resort insurance plan just told the state they're running out of money. january's fires have the fair plan paying out nearly $4 billion to insurance holders as of last week. the company received more than 5500 claims from the palisades, palisades and eden fires. >> they may very well go back to the private companies that are that are already paying their own claims for the fire and have

to contribute more money to keep their plan propped up. >> due to rising insurance costs and a lack of options. the fair plan has seen a near 40% increase in insuring homes in low wildfire hazard areas. other insurance companies will have to bail out the fair plan, and those costs are being passed on to consumers. california is currently facing a lawsuit over that agreement. >> new developments in a series of playground fires in san francisco's outer richmond neighborhood. police have arrested a man who may be responsible for at least one of them. those fires were at lafayette elementary school in lincoln park playground. now, police say a third fire happened at a park near the intersection of la playa and balboa streets. plainclothes officers were patrolling the neighborhood early monday morning when they saw a man lighting objects on fire. officers put out the fire and arrested the man for arson and drug possession, among other charges. they're investigating whether he is connected to the other fires.

>> an update from the oakland estuary. state officials confirmed all the fuel tanks on the clipper ship that sank sunday night near alameda were empty. that means the ship does not pose any environmental hazard. just yesterday, a barge adjusted the ship, allowing divers to access the three remaining fuel tanks of the vessel. no one was on board when it sank. the coast guard said the boat has not moved in eight years. >> 609 this morning. warmer weather is back this afternoon. highs are going back above average after that cooler afternoon yesterday. anywhere from about 5 to 10 degrees above average. lots of 70s and 80s this afternoon. warmest area santa rosa getting close to 90 degrees today. so the warming trend arrives today. it will accelerate tomorrow. looking live from walnut creek this morning, we have mainly clear skies. clouds along the coast. some patchy cloud cover around the bay shoreline, but any of that cloud cover dissipates by about 830 this morning, so it's

of pride month, only weeks away from san francisco pride celebrations. and funding this year is questionable. >> we're told the show will go on. and strides have been made to make up for the major sponsors who recently pulled out. organizers now say some long term partners have returned. pride executive director suzanne ford says it's the local companies that have really stepped up. but she says they are still roughly $200,000 short. >> i think the real question now with fundraising is what are what shape are we going to be in when we get on the other side, and will we be able to sustain the organization and start planning for 2026? >> and ford says if people come out to support sf pride and if each person gave just ten bucks. next year's events will be in a better position financially. she says this year's pride will go on as scheduled, but upcoming years could be in jeopardy. and a reminder abc seven is the exclusive broadcast partner for the san francisco pride parade. you can watch it live sunday,

june 29th. that is practically around the corner. you can watch it here or wherever you stream abc seven news. i'll be hosting. drew will be there too. >> a lot of fun. >> may is mental health awareness month. abc seven news is highlighting the potential cuts facing a vital resource called the warmline. hotlines like nine eight, eight are crisis lines for suicidal and severe situations, but warmline try to help people before getting to that point. the california warmline can only take about half as many calls as they receive, but proposed state budget cuts could make that even fewer. >> that means the 20,000 calls that we get on a monthly basis won't get replied to. there was no answers to them. we kind of will revert back to having our original budget, which only takes about 35 to 40,000 calls a year. and like i mentioned earlier, we get that volume per month now. >> the hope is they can get the word out enough to restore their

funding at the state level to continue the work they do. a tech companies return to the bay area drew crowds yesterday. this was the line at the early access event for the new micro center store in santa clara. the chain sells a wide variety of computer parts, gaming supplies and electronics. it also has trained technicians to give customers advice on all their projects and repairs at home. the store's grand opening is tomorrow. summer is just around the corner, and starbucks is introducing four new frappuccino drinks. here's a look at the flavors. there's the firework frappuccino, brown sugar. strat, strato, strato you know, strawberry matcha, and salted caramel mocha. a release date has not been set, but starbucks says the firework flavor is expected to arrive in time for the 4th of july. it's a festive twist on the chain's summer berry refresher. >> starbucks is also accepting applications for a global content creator. you and an employee will spend a year

golden gate bridge. it's just a gorgeous ride across. no problems from the north bay into san francisco. and also if you're heading across the richmond san rafael bridge right now, traffic is backed up from canal boulevard to the tolls, and then it picks up. bay bridge is backed up to the 880 overcrossing also heads up for vta. they're doing some track repairs. and right now to do that, they have a bus bridge in place between san antonio and tamien. so give yourself a little extra time and this will continue through june 9th. reggie. >> thank you. francis. at this morning's live desk, we're monitoring developments in san francisco's budget. and layoffs could be on the table. mayor daniel lurie shared his first budget plan since his election. san francisco is facing a $782 million deficit, according to our media partner, the sf standard. the mayor plans to eliminate about 1000 jobs. now, many of these positions are already vacant or filled by employees who are set to retire. it would still impact up to 17

zero. >> that's a retired college professor and education consultant who addressed the pros and cons of grading equity. and many parents have also been speaking out about this strategy. congressman ro khanna called it a betrayal of the american dream. live in the newsroom gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> thank you. gloria. today is oakland, unified's final day of instruction for the 2024 2025 school year. that means it's also the last day for outgoing superintendent doctor kyla johnson trammell. she'll hold a news conference at ousd headquarters. she served for the past eight years. that is longer than any other superintendent in the past five decades. and community groups, including including the naacp, are calling for transparency and inclusive leadership from the oakland unified school district board. an open letter to the board disapproves of the decision to terminate the superintendent. it asks for a search committee with community representation and for town hall meetings with updates in the search for new

probably know, united has a huge presence in newark, which has been problematic recently. both airlines will offer flights on each other's website and app, allowing booking across the two and allowing you to use miles and points for either of the airlines. if you go to victoria's secret's website today, you may see a blank screen with a message from the company. since yesterday, the website has been fully down due due to a prolonged security incident. the blackout resulted in shares falling. in a statement, the retailer says it's taking steps to address the security incident and even shut down some in-store services as a precaution. physical retail stores do remain open, and now we take a live look at the new york stock exchange as trading gets underway this morning. we are up about 55 points. china's ai startup deep seek is stepping up the competition with u.s. rivals. their new update has the ai ranking above xs, ai, grok three and alibaba's quen three.
