wildfire season begins, people in the bay area get prepared and learn about zone zero. >> it came out of nowhere. something hit my foot from beneath. >> also a close encounter. a surfer talks about his up close experience with a shark off the waters of san mateo county. >> all our employees were handcuffed and they took people. >> an immigration raid at a san diego restaurant erupts into a chaotic scene. abc seven news starts now. >> always live abc seven news starts right now. >> facing the threat. an event today helped people learn how to protect their homes and families from wildfires. thanks for joining us i'm j.r stone. we've already seen several grass fires this weekend in the bay area, as one fire department gets ready to declare the start of fire season. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard has a look at how people are preparing.

>> first responders from across the north bay together in one place at the sonoma county fairgrounds, helping homeowners prepare for wildfire emergencies. >> making sure that your combustibles have been removed, and just paying attention to weather and taking responsibility for keeping your home safe. >> how to do that can be overwhelming, but there's tips to help, like how to evacuate your neighborhood during a wildfire and where to go, signing up for emergency alerts and safety demos for avoiding downed power lines. elizabeth ramirez shows us the free emergency go bag. her family got full of items she hopes she'll never need. elizabeth has lived in santa rosa 20 years, witnessing multiple wildfires. >> it was horrible. it was just something that we don't want to go through again. >> on saturday, fire crews battled this three alarm vegetation fire in the oakland hills. no structures threatened. forward. progress was stopped. but fires like this are no surprise to local agencies. >> we've seen the conditions

locally changed from lush green hilltops to really brown, dry, dry hills. >> santa rosa fire marshal paul lowenthal says it's why his department will declare the start of wildfire season on june 2nd. >> santa rosa is one of the agencies that does declare the start and stop of our local fire season, primarily because it's tied to ordinances, but it's also just a good reminder, especially when you start seeing how things are drying out. it's an important time to be to be prepared. >> the expo has ideas like this for creating home landscapes, which are fire safe. next year, california will require homeowners living in high fire risk areas to make changes. focusing on zone zero, which is the defensible space 0 to 5ft from structures. >> it's just a function of changing old practices like having shrubs, you know, right up against your house. >> elizabeth and her family are leaving a bit wiser on how to handle a wildfire emergency. >> being out here today is giving us a lot of answers to

those questions we have. >> in santa rosa. cornell, bernard, abc seven news. >> cornell, thanks so much. a grass fire in san jose this afternoon sent up a lot of smoke in the area off of rough drive in west hedding street, near the san jose airport. it impacted traffic in the area. you can see those big plumes of smoke there. about five acres have burned. another brush fire in san jose. this one burned overnight in the area of singleton road and locke drive. you can see the crews had to battle heavy smoke and flames. the fire was held to about two acres. no word yet on a cause. we want to bring in abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian with a look at your wildfire outlook. spencer. i mean, some big concerns out there right now. yeah. j.r. based on our history with. >> wildfires there's reason for that big concern. but going into this wildfire season we are on an encouraging note in terms of fire danger risk. look at the fire danger index here. the red the greens and blues

indicating where we have only low to moderate risk around the bay area. those areas closer to the central valley where there's a lot of heat and low humidity, of course, are in a higher fire risk. but as we go into the evening hours and into tomorrow, we'll see more of the green and the blue on this map, indicating low fire risk right now for the bay area. here are some of the factors contributing to that lower risk. the 24 hour temperature change shows it's about 15 to 25 degrees cooler in most bay area locations right now than at this time yesterday. so the cooler weather of course, helps. now it is breezy out there. you don't like gusty winds when you've got fire danger. however, those onshore breezes are lifting a relative humidity into a safer zone. so we've got cooler air. we've got higher relative humidity. at least for now. we are in that low risk category. i'll have the complete accuweather seven day forecast a little bit later j.r. >> spencer, thank you so much. we look forward to that. stay on top of the forecast anytime with the abc seven bay area streaming tv app. you can get wildfire

weather alerts, our live newscast and breaking news. just search abc seven bay area to download our app. developing news a targeted terror attack in boulder, colorado this afternoon. this is according to the fbi, which is now investigating. at least five people were injured, possibly burned, during a pro-israel peaceful demonstration. police responded to reports of a man with a weapon and that people were being set on fire. a man was taken into custody. a live look here at sfo, where two flights were diverted in two days due to safety issues. early this morning, a united airlines flight to sydney was diverted to honolulu. united says a maintenance issue forced the crew to land in honolulu. the flight was then canceled. a day earlier, a united flight from sfo to beijing was forced to return due to mechanical issue. united says the plane had to release fuel to avoid landing overweight. a bay area surfer

narrowly avoided being bitten by a ten foot shark. he is now talking about yesterday's close call on at montara beach. montara beach that is state park there. jens heller says he will continue surfing in spite of the scare. he tells us he had just paddled out and had not even caught a wave yet when he felt something hit his foot and knock him off his board. he says he remembers seeing the shark's black eye and its teeth. heller says the shark quickly let the surfboard go, and he got back on and paddled back to shore as fast as he could. >> i thought it was just like had it in its mouth without causing any damage and just let let go of it again. but yeah, it really got it, and it actually got it at a spot where my leg would have been if i had still been sitting completely sitting on on the board. >> heller says he's heard there was a dead whale nearby on the beach, which may have attracted the shark activity, but he says he now has the perfect excuse to

get a new surfboard. just glad he's okay. after all of that. armed ice agents stormed a restaurant friday night in san diego's south park neighborhood. for employees at bonate. forchetta were detained. reporter esmeralda perez has reaction from residents and employee who was there during that raid. >> homeland security investigation agents swept through the restaurant as part of an operation, but outside the community pushed back. at one point, flashbangs were fired as people surrounded the agents cars. afterwards, i met claire cody, an employee who was inside when the operation unfolded. >> they come in and say they have a search warrant. all of our employees were handcuffed and they searched our ids and they took people. our ids and >> don't say a word. >> took to social media, sharing their working closely with their attorneys to help support their detained employees and their families. they called away. the operation, unfolded nothing

short of traumatic and said they are devastated and heartbroken. jeanne decarlo brought a sign from home to show her support. she says this restaurant has been a keystone business that has uplifted the neighborhood. >> these are hard working people. these are people in integrated into our neighborhood. >> that's esmeralda perez reporting. san diego's mayor has spoken out against this raid, while san diego county supervisor jim desmond defended ice agents. a social media post reads in part, it's about protecting our communities and keeping our country safe. an end of an era for san francisco's dining scene along the embarcadero, the iconic fog city has been closed permanently after 40 years on battery street. the restaurant made the announcement on friday via social media that it was the last day of service. it originally opened as fog city diner in 1985, before being completely reimagined in 2013.

field championship. won gold medals in the girls high jump and the triple jump. the meet has drawn national attention after criticism from president trump. abby hernandez competed under a rule change that may be the first of its kind involving high school sports. the california interscholastic federation allowed an additional student to compete in events where the trans athlete abby hernandez qualified. hernandez's mother talked about the criticism her daughter has been receiving. >> what i've told abby, don't take it personal. this has nothing to do with you. it's a political agenda. >> the atmosphere was relatively quiet, despite critics, including parents and conservative activists, calling for hernandez to be barred from competing. some more bracelets and t-shirts that read save girls sports pride celebrations are underway across the bay area, including the east bay city of richmond held its 11th annual pride event this weekend. today there was a pride parade

is from last year. tonight, parts of the country, including northern california, might get another rare glimpse of the northern lights. noaa has forecasted a powerful geomagnetic storm, which are caused by solar wind hitting earth's magnetic field and atmosphere. some bay area sky gazers are able to capture some spectacular images of the aurora borealis. in last may. that is. and i know i talked with some of those folks. they were just they said it was it was an awful moment, spencer. so hopefully will we get to see that tonight. >> in the higher elevations, if you're above the forming clouds. low clouds down low? yes. but if you're down at bay level, as the low clouds roll in, you might not get the best view. so let's let's hope for slow development of the. >> great pictures. >> okay, here's a look at the satellite radar composite image. little trough of low pressure digging in there off the northern california coast is bringing us a brisk onshore

flow. not much yet in the way of clouds, although the marine layer will develop a redevelop tonight. but right now we're looking at gusts up to 33mph at sfo, 2520 four mile per hour gusts over hayward and livermore. so breezy all around the area, but that onshore flow is a cooling one. as you see on the 24 hour temperature change, it's 15 to 25 degrees cooler across the region than at this time yesterday, which is good news because we had quite a bit of heat building around the bay area on friday and saturday. so right now it's 59 degrees here in san francisco, low to mid 60s at oakland and hayward, san jose 70 degrees 75 at redwood city, 57 at half moon bay. nice view from mount tam looking down ontot a few scattered low clouds pushing out over the bay right now. the marine layer still hasn't really fully developed. it's 70 degrees up north at santa rosa, 66 at petaluma, napa 64 low to mid 70s at fairfield and concord, 77 at livermore. and a nice view of a mix of blue sky and clouds at the golden gate. these are our forecast

headlines today and going into this evening it will be breezy and much cooler. as you probably discovered already early this week. mostly sunny, mild days lie ahead, and at the end of the week, a little bit of a warming trend will develop. right now, though, we're looking at that onshore flow. and as we take the forecast animation into the nighttime hours, you'll see a little bit of a development of marine layer along the coastline. doesn't look like it's going to push very far over the bay and inland overnight. so tomorrow morning we'll start the day with the marine layer dissipating and skies becoming sunny and clear. so overnight low temperatures will be mainly in the low 50s, although a little chillier up north of santa rosa, where we'll have a low of about 48 degrees. at santa cruz, a low of 49. highs tomorrow 61.5 moon bay 67 here in san francisco 71. oakland around the bay shoreline, mainly mid to upper 70s up in the north bay 80 at napa 79 santa rosa inland east bay, mainly mid to upper 80s so mild to warm there, but certainly not hot like the weather we had yesterday on friday. san jose will top out at 79. here's the accuweather seven
