afternoon. i'm kristen z. >> and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. we're hearing more often about ice immigration raids and detainment all across the country. >> this one happened in a sanctuary city right here in san francisco. and immigration experts say it could have a broader impact on the immigrant community. >> abc seven news reporter luz pena is here with the story and reaction to it. >> yes, kristen, we're learning more details about these detentions. immigration attorneys confirmed at least four children are among the group detained by ice, one as young as three years old. all the others are under ten years old. their families now trying to find out where they have been sent to. during a routine check in with immigration officials at the san francisco offices, at least 15 people were seen being detained by ice without warning. >> ice requires people who are going through immigration court process, or even people who have already gone through the process

and gotten relief to check in with them periodically. >> priya patel's client is a 25 year old woman who attended her immigration meeting with her two children. she had been asked to come in under special circumstances on wednesday. >> my client was on an ankle monitor, so her location was always known by ice and again, she was complying so they weren't expecting to be detained and suddenly they were. >> for almost 24 hours, patel said she tried to find her client. the mother was able to call her sister to alert the family of their detention. >> so they were held overnight at an ice office. that's not designed to be a detention center. our understanding is that they were in a cell overnight that doesn't even have beds. they were laying on the floor of the cell overnight. and what we've heard via my client's sister is that they were not given food. >> san francisco's mayor, daniel lurie, was asked about these detentions in a sanctuary city. >> we have been told by federal

officials that they have alerted every county to any detainees. we have not been alerted yet. >> abc news confirmed ice made 2368 nationwide arrests on wednesday, numbers that reflect orders from the white house to increase the detentions of undocumented immigrants during a congressional hispanic caucus meeting, state leaders highlighted the new strategies that are being used by ice. >> show up to court for your removal case. it's dismissed. what these individuals do, they walk out of the courtroom immediately. as they walk out of that courtroom, they are rearrested and put into what is called an expedited removal process. >> legal experts are concerned this will lead to fewer undocumented immigrants showing up for their hearings, leading to worse outcomes. >> this is intentional fear mongering that's intended to terrorize our communities. >> we know at least patel's client, along with her two

children, are being transported to a family detention center in texas. as to the others, their attorneys are still trying to get answers. we contacted ice and have not heard back. luz pena, abc seven news. >> all right. thank you. extra police patrols today on a trail in the south bay where two women say they were assaulted. those attacks happened just hours apart from one another yesterday along los gatos creek trail in the area of lee avenue. investigators are asking people to take a look at this photo of the suspect. can't see the facehe really well, but he's in his 30s and was wearing a black hoodie with green lettering on the back. police say they will be patrolling the area for the next week or two. >> new developments in the lawsuit filed by the family of an inmate who died inside santa rita jail. wellpath that's the inmate health care provider, has agreed to pay $2.5 million to the children of maurice monk. the 45 year old man was found dead after spending several days

face down in his jail cell. that was back in 2021. monk had diabetes and schizoaffective disorder. his family accused authorities of ignoring monks worsening condition. >> this is a man who had not eaten, who had not left his cell and was not taking any medication, and was left laying face down on his bunk for close to four days, half clothed in his own urine and excrement. >> monk's family already won a $7 million settlement from alameda county. new details now. a man was arrested for a double homicide that took place last week in vallejo. the deadly shooting was near a homeless encampment along austin creek on may 26th. two men were found dead at the scene and a third person was hospitalized. the suspect is a 45 year-old vallejo resident who was apprehended in san francisco yesterday. anyone with information on this case is asked to please call vallejo police. >> a bay area billionaire gave a

massive gift to the city of san francisco's police department. enough funding to relocate a center that analyzes drone video and automatic plate readers to help make arrests. abc seven news reporter suzanne phan explains, it's not a done deal. not yet. suzanne. >> so, kristin, we heard from ripple co-founder chris larsen today, along with the mayor and san francisco police chief. they all say this public private they partnership is a game changer for san francisco. they also emphasize the oversight that comes with using these powerful tech tools. mayor daniel lurie says a $9.4 million donation from crypto billionaire and ripple co-founder chris larsen is a big win for the city of san francisco. the gift would cover the cost to improve the real-time investigation center, or arctic. moving it from the hall of justice on bryant stree, south of market downtown, to empty space in ripple's offices on montgomery street. >> i know many of you have visited the arctic in the old

space at 850. bryant. you know, it needed an upgrade. >> the center analyzes drone video and automatic license plate readers to help make arrests. >> it brings together live data from across the city. 9-1-1 calls drones llp's public safety cameras and delivers that information to officers in the field in real time. >> we use the term game changer quite often, but it truly has been a game changer. auto thefts are down 41%. >> since arctic launched three months ago. city leaders say it has helped officers make 500 arrests, including 32 this past week. while the city still grapples with a shortage of more than 500 officers. police say drones have been a big help. >> we started the drone program with city funding, but we needed some assistance to take it to the next level and that's what this funding will do. >> electronic frontier foundation says more surveillance is not the answer.

it stated that surveillance curbed civil liberties and impacts the lives of the city's most vulnerable people. and it released this statement saying, quote, the current crime fall the sfpd is taking credit for is happening nationwide, even in cities that have not eroded democratic principles. in order to put drone over the city and a camera on every block. larsen said as long as there is proper oversight, people should not be concerned about the overreach of technology. >> these professional criminal crews, they've got access to all that technology completely unfettered. so i think the answer is give these cutting edge tools to the police, but have the kind of oversight that we have in the city. >> larsen said there were four layers of oversight to make that $9.4 million donation to sfpd. he says they asked sf police community foundation, the mayor's office and the police commission all had to greenlight it. the board of supervisors still needs to approve the deal before it becomes official. live

in the newsroom. suzanne fawn, abc seven news. >> all right, suzanne, thank you. in the north bay, a group gathered to demonstrate in front of a tamalpais high school this morning. they're upset about a recent school board decision to end a contract for the black student success support team and remove the two community members who run it. abc seven news reporter zach fuentes has that story. >> the leaders of the program speaking out today, supported by many of the students they serve here at tam high. they say the program has been a success and they desperately want to see that momentum keep going. the protesters took over the front of tamalpais high school thursday morning, following a vote by the school district board to restructure the school's black student success support team, a program run by paul austin and tanisha tate, leaders beloved by the high school community. >> it's pretty much overwhelming, to be honest, because it's not necessarily about paul and tanisha wright. it's about this work that we started this year specifically to serve our black students, our our most

vulnerable students. >> the pious union high school district voted tuesday night 3 to 2 to restructure the program, cutting austin and tate's positions as contractors to the district. >> devastated. i mean, you know, the children, we see the children every day. the children are connected to u. they were devastated. >> the board members said in the heated tuesday night meeting that they couldn't justify the $250,000 the program costs. >> i know nobody likes to hear this, but it's $250,000 and we have multiple schools and we have financial constraints. >> the black student success support team has only been around for a year, but data presented to the board the night of the vote showed that test scores and attendance had improved among the students who were part of the program. >> why are we willing to pay that for, let's say, lawyer's fees, but we're not willing to pay that for excellent black educators to come and be really successful helping our black kids. >> the board did say that it wants to continue the program, but with school staff instead of outside staff, austin and tate said they knew they weren't going to be with the program

forever, but are still hopeful to have at least three years to create and solidify a model they hope could be used at schools throughout the district. >> this is year one that the black student success team is just now getting started. there's so much more that we want to do because it's not just about the black students, it's about all the students. >> staff and community members who support the program say they plan to draft a letter and gather signatures to send to the school board. they plan to speak out again at june 17th. board meeting in mill valley. zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> in the east bay. fire crews have gained control of a wildfire that burned overnight in the crockett a. flames burned near san pablo avenue and cummings skyway near old country road. crews from several different agencies responded and kept the flames to six acres. no injuries or structures damaged. no word yet on a cause. >> here's a big change, potentially. san francisco mayor daniel lurie wants to end free parking in golden gate park to help pay for upkeep at the park. lurie has introduced legislation

to make visitors pay about $3 an hour to park there, although the cost would change based on demand. he says it's far from a done deal. >> it's not ending now, actually. it's talked about for a couple of years from now. we have to find revenue sources to keep our parks safe, clean. it's up for discussion. >> recreation and park officials proposed the idea earlier this year to help close the department's budget deficit, which could balloon to $15 million by 2027. >> a new effort by the state's top prosecutor to focus on a crime that impacts businesses and leaves neighborhoods in the dark. >> also here it looks like something from the future, but it will soon play a role in helping house the homeless in the bay area. >> and coming up in the four at four. costco is trying out a new way to check out, and all you need is your smartphone. >> i'm meteorologist sandhya patel. lingering haze keeping

top prosecutor is now helping local cities and counties crack down on copper wire theft. attorney general rob bonta held a news conference today to discuss this problem, which has impacted numerous cities here in

the bay area and all across the region. abc seven news reporter tim johns has the story. >> this problem has existed for some number of years, but is growing is worsening every year. >> california attorney general rob bonta highlighting his office's efforts to crack down on copper wire theft at a news conference thursday. bonta saying his team is focused on assisting local jurisdictions around the state. the ag also issuing a new bulletin for law enforcement agencies summarizing existing california laws regarding copper theft and recyclers obligation to report any copper transactions. copper thefts have risen across california, including right here in the bay area. during his news conference, bonta even mentioned one prominent incident that happened in solano county earlier this year. >> this past january, a k through eight school in vallejo was shut down for over a week after copper wire theft left them without power. more than 600 students and their families were left high and dry. >> abc seven news covered that school closure as events unfolded. vallejo hasn't been the only city impacted, though.

the oakland coliseum dmv has been shut down since april after thieves did extensive damage to the facility following a copper wire theft. oakland city council member noel gallo says he sees the problem everywhere in the city. >> you drive down streets, the lights are all turned off because somebody went into the electrical main line. or you look at the signals, right? i drove down the signals here on east 12th. they're shut down. >> kyle says while he appreciates bonta's efforts, he thinks local municipalities need to do more to stop these types of thefts. >> because we all know where it's happening. when it happens, who's doing, who's doing it. and but we just need to enforce the rules that we do have. >> but with these thefts bleeding across city lines, bonta says it will take everyone's efforts to get the situation more under control. >> the people who foot the bill are you and me and us taxpayers, the public, law abidingaxpayers, californians who had no role in the destruction. and that cannot continue. >> in san francisco. tim johns, abc seven news.

>> in the south bay, the san jose police department is once again showing its support for the lgbtq plus community. this morning, the department held its annual pride flag raising ceremony. the san jose police department flies a rainbow flag every june in honor of pride month as a show of inclusion, respect and love. it's a visual, undeniable message that says you don't have to guess if you belong here, you do. you don't have to wonder if your identity will be a barrier here. it won't. that's what makes this flag powerful. san jose police is one of the first departments in the country to raise the pride flag at its headquarters. pioneering the tradition in 2019. >> happening tomorrow. installation of the pink triangle on twin peaks will begin, and san francisco pride organizers are putting out the call for volunteers. the triangle is a symbol of progress made by the lgbtq plus community that goes up every june for pride month. this will be the

the air quality for the bay area. notice more spots are green, which is good. there are a couple of pockets that are still moderate san jose, oakland and livermore. looking at the smoke forecast for the upper parts of the atmosphere, you will notice the next few hours. it's still hanging around. tomorrow morning you're starting to see some holes in that haze, basically indicating that we're going to see an improvement as the wind shifts directions and really starts to push some of that out of here as we check out the air quality advisory. that's up for today, friday and saturday. we're going to start to see some good air quality entering the picture. it is gusty out there. onshore winds 30 miles an hour in napa 26 for livermore. that has helped to bring some temperatures down today. here's a look at the wind gusts going hour by hour. we'll keep it on the gusty side through this evening. and then the winds will drop off. and then pick up a little bit tomorrow, but not quite as much as today. beautiful view from emeryville. as we look back towards san francisco. you can see that deep marine layer there. it's about

capsule homes. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard has the story behind this futuristic looking possible solution. >> you don't have to journey to a galaxy far, far away to see housing like this. try santa rosa. >> so what we're looking at today is space capsule housing. >> steve schneider is ceo of nonprofit homes for the homeless. he's showing us around this modern 400 square foot adu pod that looks like something right out of star wars. >> everyone loves the windows. the windows are probably the best part about these. it's just so spacious. >> with the touch of a button, the drapes close automatically. there's a galley kitchen and a full bathroom. the entire unit made of recycled aircraft aluminum. the space age idea came to schneider after he found himself homeless in 2017. >> after i lost my home in the tubbs fire, we created the nonprofit for people like myself who have been through disasters. >> the units come in different sizes and prices, from 69 to 109,000. built by vessel in

the rest of the world. >> several sonoma county supervisors support the space capsule housing and has plans to move forward. the nonprofit team posting this a virtual blastoff for their housing solution in santa rosa. cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> fremont is the best place in america to raise a family. that's according to nerdwallet. fremont has one of the highest median family incomes anywhere in the country, and it's in the bottom five of children without health insurance. nerdwallet says that number is less than 2%, while just 1% of the population lacks access to healthy food. nerdwallet also says 58% of schools in fremont unified school district are rated seven out of ten, and out of 182 cities ranked. san jose came in 13th, and san francisco is 21st on that list. >> a move forward today in san mateo county to get the sheriff out of office. the vote that happened just a few hours ago in the process to replace sheriff

>> president donald trump's campaign promise turned proclamation, triggering fear and uncertainty in some bay area communities. >> we thought with the improved relationship with the sudanese government in his term, this would make him reconsider having sudan. >> the hayward based sudanese association of northern california helped sudanese families stuck in immigration red tape. harith al-rifai is president of the organization and worries they'll be locked out due to the president's new travel ban. >> i have a couple of friends who has been trying to get their spouses and reunite their families for the last 1 or 2 years. >> the proclamation cites national security threats and inefficient screening processes from the 19 countries that made the list. but el-rufai thinks sudan was an easy target a country at civil war which doesn't provide any economic advantage for the united states. >> the records of all the criminals and all the cases here in the u.s, even the terrorist

acts in this country, you wouldn't find anything that has to do with the sudanese people. the motivation of this administration to have a big list, and we just happen to be one of those weak countries at this point. >> there's a lot of economic anxiety in this country, but the far right has really decided that they're going to blame immigrants as public enemy number one for the problems with this country. and so in that way, this fits pretty well with the trump agenda. >> professor nolan higdon says president trump learned from failures of his first travel ban, which faced legal challenges, this time going to the state department to help craft the legislation. >> going to be a lot more complex. it involves a lot more countries. he actually has, you know, a state department investigation to justify it. so the courts are going to have a lot more to deal with here than last time. >> another country on the list is yemen. that's where community activist aseel farah's family is from. they're canceling a trip to yemen to visit a sick grandmother because of fears of getting back into the u.s, even though they're u.s. citizens, he says the rhetoric around the travel ban fuels dangerous

what trump said, but that he misses the white house. >> people leave my administration and they love us, and then at some point they miss it so badly, and some of them embrace it and some of them actually become hostile. >> yeah, well, trump also described their relationship in the past tense, saying they had a great relationship but doesn't know if they would any longer. certainly after those tweets it becomes tougher. >> and we'll see what happens the next few days. it was intense today. well, meanwhile, there's uncertainty in washington around the fate of president trump's spending plan. more senators are demanding changes to the bill, and a new analysis says it would balloon the country's debt by $2.4 trillion. abc news reporter christiane cordero is in washington. >> any changes in the senate would restart negotiations in the house? president trump and republican supporters have set a deadline of the 4th of july to get this bill signed and official. this morning.

president trump spending bill faces an uncertain future as its impact on the economy becomes more clear. a new analysis from the nonpartisan congressional budget office says the bill, which would extend trump's 2017 tax cuts, would balloon the deficit by $2.4 trillion over the next decade. the analysis also projects 16 million people would lose health insurance coverage as a result of changes to programs like medicaid and the affordable care act. tax credits republican supporters who have dubbed this the big beautiful bill can only afford to lose three votes in the senate. white house budget director russell vought, pushing back against the criticism while taking heat on capitol hill. >> cato institute disagrees with you. moody's disagrees. the cbo disagrees. senator hawley and senator rand and senator collins disagree. elon musk disagrees. virtually everyone on this side of the aisle. so you're saying everyone is wrong, but you are the right one, that this does not increase the debt.

>> and today, new signs of a weakening economy. a new federal report shows the economy contracted in the past six weeks due to businesses worrying about tariffs. this maryland man's company manufactures tins for infant formula, coffee and other food items. he says he's passing along the tariff cost after absorbing as much as he can. >> i've been using the word chaos more than i have probably in my entire life. in the last three months. the not knowing is what's driving business crazy. we need stability, consistency and predictability to plan. >> and a new jobs report shows growth in the private sector nearly stalled in may, just 37,000 positions added the weakest total in more than two years. christiane cordero, abc news, washington. >> big developments today in a story. we're following that effort to remove the san mateo county sheriff, christina corpus, from office. the board of supervisors voting about two hours ago to start that process. abc seven news political

reporter monica madden is live for us in redwood city tonight. monica, walk us through what happened today. precisely. >> dan. well, today, the board of supervisors unanimously voted on what's called a notice ofoted intent to remove for sheriff corpus. it contains all of the alleged reasons that supervisors believe she should lose her job. we were expecting to get a redacted version of this notice, but it is going to remain private. at the request of sheriff corpus attorneys. it's a showdown in san mateo county. >> and to remove the sheriff corpus from office. >> in the saga of embattled sheriff christina corpus. >> i'm asking this body to step back for a moment. >> community members and corpus attorneys weighing in before the board met in a closed session. corpus faces numerous accusations that she abused her power at the heart of it an alleged inappropriate relationship with her chief of staff. >> i know what is right. i've done nothing wrong. >> her lawyers accused two

supervisors of bias. >> we believe in the judiciary. we believe in the rule of law, and we will continue to fight this. they call it the good old boy network. but guess what? sheriff corpus is going against the good old boy network, and we're by our side. >> advocating for her removal. say it's time to move on. >> i think she deserves another opportunity to do the right thing. and that is just step away and let public safety go back to where it should be, and then resolve the matter if necessary. >> this action marks the start of a months long process. next, the county will schedule a pre removal conference for corpus. there she'll be able to address allegations in front of the county's chief probation officer, who will recommend next steps to the board if four-fifths of supervisors vote to continue, corpus can appeal and have a full hearing with testimony, evidence and potentially subpoenas. ultimately, the board of supervisors could decide not to remove sheriff corpus, but her legal team says they do not feel confident in that outcome. keep
