6:02 am
right now. it is friday, so hopefully folks will get enough advance notice. and if you are heading into san francisco, you'll want to avoid that stretch on northbound 101 and possibly head over to northbound 280. that's your best bet at this point, so keep that in mind. 101 has been the hot spot this morning on the peninsula southbound 101 past millbrae. an injury crash blocked lanes, so traffic is backing up from millbrae to about broadway. hopefully they will clear this one up soon. also, 280 is an alternate at this point, but of course, if you can't take 280, there's el camino real. luckily for folks heading to sfo, traffic is still flowing well and also 101 all the way in the north bay. petaluma southbound, a big rig stall blocking a lane and it is causing minor delays right at the scene. so we'll keep you posted on the fatal crash and what to do about 101, but drew's got some much better news for us.
6:03 am

are tracking a four alarm fire in san francisco's richmond district. flames shooting from a multi-unit building overnight, forcing some people to evacuate their homes. >> this is happening on fifth avenue between balboa and ancestry. this is just blocks from golden gate park, and that's where abc seven news reporter zach fuentes is right now. good morning zach. >> no major injuries, but we do know that a firefighter twisted their ankle and a cat that was reported missing has been found dead. and as the sun is rising this morning, it's revealing some more of the damage that has been caused by this fire. we're seeing these homes that have been gutted. there are about three homes that suffered the most damage and one other one that suffered some minor. i spoke with one woman who lives in one of the homes that was gutted. she was just here a moment ago telling me about what happened. she was in her bedroom sleeping when her housemate started banging on the door, telling her that was a there was a fire. they got out immediately. like we said, no major injuries to any humans
6:05 am
that got out immediately. she grabbed a couple of things, whatever she could, and now she's not sure what is left inside of her home. at this point, they are in touch with the red cross, working to get some help and some resources. right now the fire department does not know the cause of the fire that is under investigation right now as they continue to overhaul this, but they face a lot of challenges fighting this fire, as they typically do here in the city. let's take a listen to what the chief had to say this morning about that. >> possibility of san francisco are right up against each other. so you have wood siding and wood siding. so the fire can extend very rapidly from one building to another. so it's really incumbent upon us to get ahead of the fire and make sure we place hose lines where we're anticipating the fire to go and extinguish the fire ahead of its progress. >> so again, firefighters are now finally starting to clear up the scene. earlier this morning on balboa on fifth street here, firefighters were up and down the street. it was packed. there were 30 people who had been evacuated. some of those people are going to finally get to go
6:06 am
back into their homes. for the homes that were not severely damaged, they're going to be able to return later this morning. but again, there are three homes with major damage. uh- looks like just about everything has gone. hopefully there will be some things for them to salvage, but these homes are all but gutted at this point. so again, the fire department working to find out the cause of this fire. we know that one firefighter suffered a twisted ankle. one animal, a cat, did die in this. and we'll continue to track all other developments out here right now. live in san francisco. zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> thank you. zach. at the live desk, we are monitoring how the president's travel ban could shake up international sporting events, including some in the bay area. next year, the south bay hosts the world cup. and of course, la is the home of the 2028 olympics. the president's executive order bans travelers from 12 countries. now, the order does include specific exemptions for the world cup and the olympics. it has exemptions for athletes participating and their support staff and immediate family. but it doesn't say anything about international

fans. organizers for la, 28, say they're not concerned about losing revenue as a result. >> it's very clear that the federal government understands that that's a environment that they will be accommodating and provide for, and so we have great confidence that that will only continue. it has been the case to date, and it will certainly be the case going forward through the games. >> as for the world cup matches in santa clara, iran has already qualified and teams from venezuela, haiti, cuba and libya also have a chance. those are all countries with travel restrictions. >> two men will soon go to trial for an alleged murder plot against a monterey county woman they met through online gaming. they're accused of flying more than 1000 miles to try and kill her. >> guys coming from vancouver to salinas to pose as an amazon delivery person and stab somebody. i mean, it's extraordinary. >> investigators say one of the suspects was obsessed with the victim, and his friend came with him to carry out the plot. police say they showed up to the
6:08 am
victim's door with a box full of handcuffs, duct tape and knives. the woman's boyfriend answered and was stabbed when the woman tried to fight off the attackers. police say they stabbed her too. both victims survived. the men face charges of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and felony burglary. >> police in san jose say they've arrested a man suspected in a pair of assaults along a popular hiking trail. those attacks happened just hours apart from one another on wednesday along los gatos creek trail, in the area of lee avenue. san jose police released this photo yesterday showing the suspect in custody. no other details available right now, but we're expected to learn more today. >> police in redwood city say they've arrested two teenage boys accused of carrying out a hate crime during a pride event. at least one person was hurt when police say the boys threw fireworks into the crowd. it happened wednesday night at courthouse square downtown. police say the people with the fireworks shouted homophobic things into the crowd at the crowd before running away. and
6:09 am
that night, a 13 year old boy was arrested. then last night, another 13 year-old was taken into custody. the boys could face assault with a deadly weapon and hate crime charges. >> walnut creek chamber of commerce may be tracking your every move when you come to town. city business leaders teamed up with the san francisco tech company called arrival list to keep tabs on people's cell phones. they say they're trying to create data on consumer behavior, to inform strategies to bring in more visitors. the tracking technology is apparently able to tell what city's tourists come from and how many nights they stay. >> the data is aggregated and anonymous, so we don't really track individuals as much as aggregated data. it's information by location only and no demographic personal information is even gathered or shared. >> a few other local cities already use the same platform, including sonoma and stockton. >> we are now hearing from the billionaire who was giving millions to help make san
6:10 am
francisco safer. chris larson, the co-founder of ripple, offered millions to sfpd to elevate its real-time investigation center. through the center, officers used drones, public safety cameras and license plate readers to track suspects. mayor daniel lurie says the wiring at the center is outdated and failing with failing infrastructure. larson gave $9.4 million of his own money to help improve the technology at the facility. the donation will also help move the center to a new downtown office on montgomery street. >> a professional criminal crews, they've got access to all that technology completely unfettered. so i think the answer is give these cutting edge tools to the police, but have the kind of oversight that we have in the city. >> there is still one more hurdle before the gift is finalized, san francisco's board of supervisors have to approve the money before it can be formally accepted. a resolution at long last for vta workers. after the board voted to approve a new contract for bus drivers
6:11 am
and light rail operators. the union approved the offer tuesday night, ending months of tense negotiations. a strike halted all vta service for weeks until a judge ordered the picketers back to work. the new contract includes wage increases and improved workplace policies, and it takes effect monday. >> taking a live look outside from our exploratorium camera this morning, it is quite cloudy across the city today, but it will be a warmer day compared to yesterday and warmer than average in all of our cities by a few degrees. so today, 80 on the board for santa rosa, concord livermore, 70 for napa, oakland. it's just going to be a really nice day out there. even the city slightly above average in the upper 60s for daytime highs. we'll hop on over to walnut creek where it's equally as cloudy out there right now with our live view. so our morning marine layer is with us. cloud cover pulls back to the coast right around 10 a.m. that's when we'll see brighter skies. the afternoon again
6:12 am
warmer than yesterday and temperatures a bit above average. it is breezy this evening. winds gusting about 20 to 25mph. just be aware of that. here's a look at your pollen index. no change from yesterday. we continue to see grass pollen at low levels. tree pollen right now is at medium levels. your main offenders pine and olive trees. so looking at the weekend forecast, the preview, look at that steady pattern both saturday and sunday. morning clouds, afternoon sunshine. it looks like sunday will be a little windier than saturday. sunday. that afternoon breeze gusting about 15 to 25mph. reggie aqui. >> thank you drew. if you don't have breakfast figured out yet, stay tuned because it is national donut day. >> is someone delivering them or. >> where to find free donuts to help with your sugar fix? there's just something missing up here. >> but first, a new warning from the dmv. the online scam that's too good to be true. offering a big discount on car registration. plus p-g-and-e's buying its oakland headquarters.

6:16 am
lanes, and it looks like the northbound 101 connector ramp to northbound 280 is shut down. so that is our hot spot this morning. you want to avoid northbound 101 heading into san francisco. northbound to 80 is a possible alternate for you. and i also wanted to mention that there is another traffic alert on southbound 101 at millbrae, and we'll keep you posted on both accidents. >> reggie francis, thank you. happening today, the man accused of carrying out an anti-semitic attack in boulder, colorado, will be back in court this time. facing a federal judge yesterday. mohammed suleiman was charged by the state with 118 counts, 28 of them for attempted murder. police say the 45 year-old yelled free palestine before throwing molotov cocktails at a peaceful march in boulder sunday. officials say 15 people were hurt in that attack. prosecutors say the suspect had been planning this attack for a year. he's currently being held in the boulder county jail on a

6:18 am
were detained by immigration enforcement officers after attending what immigration experts describe as a regular check in with ice. priya patel's client is a 25 year old woman who attended her immigration meeting with her two children. she'd been asked to come in under special circumstances for almost 24 hours, patel said. she tried to find her client. the mother was able to call her sister to alert the family of her detention. >> so they were held overnight at an ice office. that's not designed to be a detention center. our understanding is that they were in a cell overnight that doesn't even have beds. they were laying on the floor of the cell overnight. and what we've heard via my client's sister is that they were not given food. >> legal experts are concerned this will lead to fewer undocumented immigrants showing up for their hearings, leading to worse outcomes. >> false advertisements for the dmv are circulating online. social media posts claiming to be from the agency are offering 50% off registrations. the post asked for payments to be made
6:19 am

6:32 am
is shut down, but the three left lanes are open for those continuing onto northbound 101. however, even though these lanes are open, it is causing big delays on northbound 101, so traffic is backed up from at least third street. so your best bet at this point is to take northbound to 80, moving at 71mph. we have another traffic alert. this one is on the peninsula southbound 101, this time in burlingame. approaching broadway, the three left lanes are blocked due to an injury crash and only the two right lanes are open. so you can see the backup is starting to grow towards sfo. keep this in mind for folks heading to and from sfo. if you are heading there, you may want to consider 280 as well. luckily, we have normal traffic here in emeryville, a little bit sluggish as you make your way towards the bay bridge

toll plaza, but at this point it is delay free at the tolls, and we're tracking that drive time. westbound emeryville to san francisco, 14 minutes. hi, drew. >> hi, francis. thanks for that info. we're looking at our east bay hills camera this morning where our sun is up. but we're all experiencing a lot of cloud cover this morning. we'll find temperatures beginning in the mid to upper 50s. our marine layer overhead breaks down for sunshine closer to about 10 a.m. so here's a look at future weather at 830. it's still quite cloudy around the bay shoreline and in the north bay, but here's a look at noon and we see that sunshine really breaking through that cloud cover, even along the coast today. we'll see more sunshine than yesterday, and daytime highs will be a few degrees warmer than we were yesterday. a warming trend gets underway here today, and temperatures will be a few degrees above average for this time of the year. a high of 72 in oakland today. 79 napa. we'll go to the 80s for concord, antioch, livermore, 79, in san jose, in the city, we'll hit about 67 degrees, but it will
6:34 am
get windy this afternoon. a quick look at the breeze today. stronger than yesterday. peaking later on today. by about 4 p.m, we'll find those winds gusting about 20 to 30mph. amanda. >> all right, drew, thank you. >> breaking news now in san francisco's inner richmond, where fire crews are at a major fire that broke out overnight. it's not far from golden gate park and the university of san francisco on fifth avenue between balboa and anson streets. and that's where abc seven news reporter zach fuentes has been all morning long. hi, zach. >> hey. good morning. amanda. yeah, the fire is now out, but crews are still out here mopping up and monitoring the situation. so we know that a firefighter suffered a minor injury, a twisted ankle and a cat that was believed to be missing did end up being found dead. now, as i step out here and show you some of the more major damage we are seeing, it is amazing that there were no major injuries, but there are still so many challenges the firefighters tell us that they had because of the proximity of the homes. these are homes that are connected to one another. three of these homes suffered the most damage.
6:35 am
they're all but gutted this morning. they're still working to determine the cause. some other challenges they face out here, too, are low hanging power lines. again, they were able to stop that forward progress of the fire earlier this morning, but 35 residents are still displaced. some of those residents are going to get to go home. some of them, their homes are gutted. but we talked with one of the residents this morning. this fire started at 154. he didn't wake up until 230. let's take a listen to what he had to say. >> just grabbed my cat and my phone and that's all i have. and i'm in a bathrobe with some strangers, you know, blanket on. >> yeah. and right now they are still waiting to get back in to their homes. his home is not one of the ones that was suffered the most damage, but again, because of the proximity, because of how close these homes are to one another, firefighters had to evacuate a lot of people. so those people are in touch with the red cross, and some of the residents in the homes that were gutted are now starting to make their way back out here, asking firefighters when they can get in to see what they can
6:36 am
salvage, some of them asking about medications, important documents that they just weren't able to get. so again, crews still working to determine how safe it is for anybody else to go into these homes to determine that, to determine what there is to be salvaged. but we are seeing fewer fire crews out here right now. they are starting to roll up the hoses and clear a lot of the equipment. we do still see the road closures that are in place right now, so be mindful of that. but again, the investigation is underway to determine the cause. and a lot of people still waiting to get back to their homes right now live in san francisco. zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> thank you zach. new developments. >> this morning in the drama between the president and elon musk. musk left his official position with the administration less than a week ago. but in what can only be described as. that escalated quickly. a disagreement over trump's spending plan turned into allegations by musk. the president is in the jeffrey epstein files. >> he knew everything about it. he had no problem with it. all of a sudden he had a problem, and he only developed the problem when he found out that

we're going to have to cut the ev mandate. >> elon musk publicly signaled support for the impeachment of president donald trump. however, musk might be showing signs that he's softening his tone, even appearing to agree with the post on x calling for the two to make peace. >> the post led musk to reverse his threat to decommission the spacecraft, used to transport astronauts and supplies to the international space station. it's a threat that musk had made just hours earlier. however, in a phone conversation with abc's jon karl this morning, trump said he is not particularly interested in talking to musk, although he says musk wants to talk to him. the whole feud is creating a lot of buzz, some even calling it the big beautiful breakup, a reference to the president's big beautiful bill. now, the dramatic split between the two men sent tesla's stock tumbling 16% and stunned political and financial circles alike, political experts say instead of just being about policy, it's now getting personal. bay area congressman ro khanna made the case that democrats should take the trump musk rift as an opportunity to
6:38 am
bring the tesla ceo to their side. >> look, elon is texting me. sometimes your career is over or you're done. uh- he's used insulting words when he believes something, he's going to go off. but i think we have to realize s concerned that deficits are going to go from 7% of gdp to 8.5% of gdp. they're unprecedented. >> musk spent at least $250 million backing trump's reelection campaign last year, including a daily $1 million voter sweepstakes in pennsylvania. however, the president claims he still would have won pennsylvania without musk's help. certainly a lot going on with the two. we will continue to keep you updated with the latest developments. today, the oakland high school teacher hit and killed by a driver fleeing chp will be laid to rest. marvin boomer was a teacher at castlemont high school, and his sudden death shocked many in his community. boomer was on an evening walk with his girlfriend at the time of the crash. his family says he
