always live. abc seven news starts right now. >> tonight, california's top democrats are vowing to fight back as the state braces for the possibility of widespread federal funding cuts by the trump administration, specifically targeting grants for the university of california and california state university systems. good evening. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. so far, there is no official word from the white house about the cuts, but many believe the state is being targeted because of its policies. >> abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn has been reaching out to local politicians for the latest and joins us live from the newsroom. suzanne. >> so, ama and dan, we don't have official notification of the cuts, and we don't know which grants may be targeted yet. but local, state and federal officials say everyone is bracing for the impact and what it might mean for research and development, as well as local jobs. federal funding for university of california and cal state schools might be on the

chopping block. it's expected to be a big blow to the golden state and the bay area. shawn randolph is the senior director of bay area council economic institute. >> the technology we produce for the u.s. and the world, a lot of that is rooted in basic science and scientific research, and a lot of that is at the university of california. >> our local universities receive big bucks from the federal government. >> last year. uc received $2.6 billion in federal research funding just from the national institutes of health. uc san francisco is the second largest recipient of nih funding in the united states, after johns hopkins university. >> speaker emerita nancy pelosi released this statement friday saying, quote, my office is engaging local and state partners in preparing for all possible scenarios. whatever cruel crusade the president may announce against california, we will fight back. san mateo county supervisor jackie spear

says cutting federal funding for local universities would set us back by 15 years in terms of research value. >> i was proud to represent ucsf for almost 35 years in both the legislature and in congress, and they have done extraordinary research in saving lives, being able to extend lives. >> state senator scott wiener says the trump administration is targeting university of california and other universities because of the state's policies. >> because we have refused to dehumanize trans young people, that they are going to come after our federal education funding and they will try to take money away from us, and we are prepared to fight them. >> on friday, governor gavin newsom posted this on x, saying, quote, californians pay the bills for the federal government. we pay over $80 billion more in taxes than we get back. maybe it's time to cut that off at real donald trump.

defense and other assistance to the community. >> in the east bay. a beloved oakland teacher known for his commitment to his community and his students was remembered today. oakland mayor barbara lee and the principal of castlemont high school were among the speakers at the memorial service for marvin boomer. abc seven news reporter anser hassan was there and has more. >> we are in disbelief. complete shock. >> tanisha boomer and her family came to eulogize a brother and son, marvin boomer junior, who was affectionately known as boomer. >> that was my baby. that was one of my babies, my only son. >> the family was joined by friends and boomers, castlemont high school colleagues and students who came to honor a man praised for his tremendous work within the oakland community. boomer was killed last week when he was hit by a car involved in a chp pursuit through oakland. he and his partner, nina woodruff, were out on an evening walk. >> it's not fair. it's not

>> he died a hero, and we will not allow that heroism to be silenced by bureaucratic excuses or policy failures. cloaked in blue. >> the 19 year old alleged driver in the crash was arrested. the investigation is still ongoing in oakland, anser hassan. abc seven news. >> in san francisco, the city's 33 new speed cameras officially went live today. it's all part of the effort to force drivers to slow down and try to improve street safety. but the good news for drivers is that there is a 60 day grace period on these citations. then, beginning august 5th, tickets will be mailed to the registered owners of the vehicles that exceed the speed limit by at least 11 miles an hour. fines start at $50 for driving 11 to 15 miles over the limit, but they can go up to $500. keep that in mind. the city of oakland hopes to award a contract to the same vendor that san francisco uses by next week, and san jose is also working to

secure funding. they hope, by the fall. >> police have made an arrest in connection with two sexual assaults along a popular trail in san jose. those attacks happened just hours apart on wednesday along los gatos creek trail in the area of lee avenue. a 21 year-old man was taken into custody not far from the trail. >> i want to make sure that our members of our community feel safe. we want them to enjoy this trail. this isolated incident has been has been brought to an end. i am absolutely certain we. we have the right person. >> the suspect has been booked into santa clara county jail for felony aggravated kidnaping and sexual assault. >> and the suspect in a hit and run crash that injured a five-year-old girl in san francisco last month has pleaded not guilty. the man was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, with an allegation that the collision resulted in serious injury to the victim. surveillance video captured the collision. it happened at 31st and clement in the city's outer richmond district. you can see a

white suv. there it is. make a left turn as the mother and daughter cross the street. >> a call for aid in san mateo county. community members are asking people to help a local handyman injured when a giant tree fell. the large oak came crashing down wednesday as the man and his four year old son set in a pickup truck on south railroad avenue. a gofundme post says they were both hurt. it's asking for help to cover medical bills since the four-year-old needed surgery on his leg. they are also hoping to replace the father's truck, saying he is the sole provider for his family of four. >> it is the last day of a critical lifeline for some of our bay area neighbors. the san francisco marin food bank is closing all of its 13 pop-up pantries after government funding ran out. and as abc seven news reporter tim johns explains, thousands of bay area families could now face increased food insecurity. >> for san francisco resident troy brunet, food insecurity has been a longtime challenge. >> it is really hard. i mean, to

the core of you, it's really hard when you're sitting there going, okay, now i can't eat this because i don't have this. >> for years, brunet has been getting help from the pop up pantries set up by the san francisco marin food bank. but the pantries closed for good friday after the money used to run them ran out. >> during a pandemic. we were receiving funding from all sources of government from local, state and county. but those resources have dried up. >> with the program ending. marshon tatman, who works for the food bank, fears many at-risk bay area families could soon face increased hunger. the pop up pantry is closing is only one thing worrying folks out here, though, with the trump administration also proposing funding cuts for programs like calfresh, many people are anxious they won't have anywhere else to go. those proposed cuts could come as a part of president trump's big, beautiful bill, which is currently making its way through congress. it could cut federal food stamp benefits, which would impact calfresh, rooney says if those cuts become reality, he could see the $50 a month he receives in calfresh reduced.

>> i'm very worried because the little bit extra that they've raised it to is either going to decrease or disappear. and that's a problem. >> while the pop up pantries are closing, the food bank itself will still be operating as normal. but with so much demand, tatman says they won't be able to help everybody. >> we have a wait list with over 6500 people on it. so everybody won't be able to get placement. >> a fact that worries people like brunet, who tells us while he doesn't know what's coming next for him, all he can do is hope for the best. >> it's hard. i got to stretch everything out to a degree where it's just not going to feel full. so it's a it's a hard moment in time, honestly. >> in san francisco, tim johns, abc seven news. >> in oakland, for the last time tonight, dozens of children will go to sleep without a bed. it is thanks to dozens of volunteers with the nonprofit sleep in heavenly peace, who rolled up their sleeves today and built 100 beds for kids without one of their own. they're partnering with the oakland police and fire

>> in the north bay, the long awaited arrival of the smart commuter train is pulling into the town of windsor. >> the transit extension has locals and small business owners excited about what the train could mean for the local economy. >> abc seven news reporter cornell bernard shows you how it's helping to build a better bay area. >> the 1215 smart train from larkspur is arriving in windsor with new riders on board. why windsor today? >> because you can get there by train now. >> drew mcdaniel and parker day rode the ferry from san francisco, then jumped on the smart train north for some bike riding through sonoma wine country. >> it's possible to, like, do a day trip up here now and get back home and, you know, not have to rent a car. >> i really want to go to russian river brewery and have lunch and go back to the city. it's easy to make a day trip out of it now. >> smart just completed the $75 million extension from the sonoma county airport after five

years of construction. the new station now connects commuters and visitors with the windsor town green. lots of shopping and wine tasting. here's brenda lynch believes the train will be great for her dog friendly wine tasting room, mutt lynch winery. >> when people think about wine country, they think about going to sonoma valley or up to healdsburg. and when the end of the line is windsor, i think they'll learn about what all the great restaurants we have, the great shopping we have, the great tasting rooms we have here. >> this is just a huge deal, and it's going to bring a lot of people. >> smart general manager eddie cummins says his ridership is on the rise. >> we're about 40% above pre-pandemic levels and continuing to grow. we've already carried 1 million riders in this fiscal year. that's a huge milestone for us. >> at a time when bart and muni are struggling financially, this railroad is expanding. how are you guys doing that? >> you know, we've just been working really hard. we've been successful in bringing in grant dollars. >> we wondered how long it would take driving the 52 mile stretch from larkspur to windsor versus

>> more than a dozen people are out of their homes indefinitely and may not have much to return to. take a look. this is a fire in san francisco's inner richmond. it burned through three multi-residential homes at fifth avenue and balboa street overnight. when firefighters arrived, they found an intense fire burning at the rear of two of the buildings. 35 people in

all had to be evacuated. some say they were awakened by screams and feared someone might be trapped. >> i saw like, a bunch of, like, red flames outside. >> my window, and i looked out the window and the whole neighbor's house was on fire, and we all just started yelling, get out of the house! >> some evacuees were allowed back into their homes after the fire was put out, but others lost nearly everything. a firefighter suffered a twisted ankle and a pet cat was found dead, but no other major injuries. >> thank goodness for that. well, as fire season begins to heat up across the state, p-g-and-e's is providing a peek at some of its resources for fighting and even preventing wildfires. the company provided an inside look at its advanced technology services lab in san ramon. the demonstrations included workers responding when a tree limb contacts a power line and causes an arc flash, which could spark a fire. also, satellites that detect fires within ten minutes of starting

a. >> that's the sound of firefighters breathing heavily as they work to contain a vegetation fire in the santa cruz mountains. the fire burned in steep terrain, as you see between scotts valley and felton. it is now 100% contained, we're glad to say, at 2.3 acres. no structures were threatened by the flames. >> great job. that video really gives you a better idea of how exhausting and tiring. hard work. imagine doing it in the kind of heat that we get in the summer. >> yeah, fortunately, not too hot right now. let's get to abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel. sandhya. >> yeah, that's absolutely right. ama and dan. and the other thing is this drizzly gray pattern we've had in the night and morning hours has been really good because it deposits moisture into the dry fuels. so from a fire weather perspective, we're in good shape right now. take a look at these live pictures. beautiful views from our tower cameras. no matter which direction you look. we do have a combination of sunshine and some lingering clouds. it's pretty clear from our sky camera

and from our mount tam cam, and the wind is gusting once again, 32 miles an hour in oakland. it's an onshore breeze that supplies us with the nice free air conditioning. take a look at the wind gusts. hourly forecast showing you remains breezy tonight. tomorrow morning the winds drop off and then they'll pick back up again tomorrow afternoon. here's why we're in this pattern. there's an area of low pressure just west of los angeles. in an area of high pressure over the pacific. the wind flows from the high to the low. and that's why we are in this breezy pattern. it's certainly the low has been providing the lift for some thunderstorms in the sierra. they are seeing some active weather, but there has been some rain associated with it. we have the stable pattern, low clouds right near the coastline. those temperatures. really nice variety from the 60s at the beaches to the 80s inland at this hour. and from our mount tam cam, you can see that deep marine layer in place overnight areas of fog and drizzle your weekend weather sunny and mild to warm days, and we'll have our typical pattern with breezy

coastside clouds lingering well into the afternoon. 620 tonight, 70s and 80s inland. if you have friday night plans, definitely take that extra layer because the fog makes a push across the bay. by 915 those temperatures are dropping. and then tomorrow morning we begin with the fog, maybe some spotty drizzle. tomorrow afternoon. it's going to be another nice day with 60 to 80 numbers will be close to where they should be a little bit higher. in our inland communities, above average temperatures ranging from the 40s to the 60s. out the door tomorrow morning. if your kids have games tomorrow in the morning, it's going to be nice weather tomorrow afternoon, 79 in san jose, 82 degrees in the south bay in gilroy on the peninsula. mid 70s from palo alto to menlo park, 60 one half moon bay. that's where some of the cloud cover will linger. 67 in south city, 66 downtown san francisco, north bay temperatures 63, bodega bay 80. in santa rosa, 77 in vallejo in the east bay, a mild day after the morning fog 71, oakland 77 degrees in fremont. inland areas. walnut creek, 8284, in
