seven. news at 1030. the bay area bracing for protests. the preparations being made ahead of this weekend's big demonstrations. >> and another bay area city is banning homeless encampments. >> whether or not the schools, the schools that we have are meeting the needs of our students. >> what's the school district going to look like in two years? >> and abc seven lyanne melendez gets the answers from san francisco's superintendent. abc seven news at ten starts right now. >> always live. abc seven news starts right now. >> tensions are still running high in los angeles. hundreds of people were arrested last night, and the deployment of the national guard and marines is fueling protests in other parts of the country. good evening. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us here. a curfew is in effect right now for downtown los angeles for a second straight night. and we're hearing that some people have been detained for violating it earlier. >> hundreds of people took part in protests. some gathered at

los angeles city hall and others at the federal building. this comes as ice arrests continue, with dozens of people reportedly detained. >> abc news reporter alex stone is following this developing story. >> for a sixth night. protesters yelling at national guard troops protecting a federal building in downtown la. on tuesday night. there were over 200 arrests made by police, many for ignoring orders to leave. and it's not only in los angeles, anger over immigration raids have sent protesters into the streets in new york. on wednesday night, police detained some, and in baltimore and chicago, where a car drove through a group of protesters, 17 were arrested. in boston, hundreds rallied outside of the state house in nebraska, dozens arrested in the state's largest raid yet at a meat production plant. >> they just came in and said that it was a raid and we had to get everybody out of production. >> and back in california. these

new images of ice agents chasing workers through strawberry fields outside the federal building in la. a moment ago, a convoy of federal vehicles came in here in this crowd began to come around that convoy. then federal police came out with pepperball guns, keeping them back. not far away. new surveillance video appearing to show federal agents boxing in this car, reportedly using tear gas on a passenger and detaining the driver, leaving a toddler and infant and their mother behind. >> this is the kind of stir from the tear gas that they threw at her. >> the department of homeland security saying in a statement the suspect was wanted for punching an agent. on wednesday, 30 southern california mayors came together pleading for the situation to calm. arturo flores, a mayor of huntington park and a combat veteran with a message to the military. >> whether they have a document or they don't, you're dealing with americans. so please remember that. >> for a second night, an 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew is in place and off ramps into downtown la are

closed, with the goal of putting a stop to the violence. alex stone, abc news, los angeles. >> immigration, courthouses in san francisco and concord reopened today after dramatic scenes yesterday. protesters in both cities tried to prevent cars from driving away following reported ice detentions. this led to both courts abruptly closing yesterday, and the fbi is looking for a woman who was part of the protest in concord yesterday. authorities say the she assaulted federal officers and stole an fbi special agents badge. the fbi is offering a $25,000 reward for help in identifying her and recovering that badge. >> this weekend, some bay area residents will join people in hundreds of cities across the united states in the so-called no. king's march. oakland is expecting a big turnout, but there are concerns about how the city will be able to respond to any trouble. last night, a store was looted and a vehicle set on fire after a protest. here's abc seven news reporter anser hassan.

>> on saturday, hundreds of cities across the country will take part in the no. king's march, aimed at sending a message to president donald trump. stuart chan will be the opening speaker in oakland. >> he's ruining our country with ironclad. and that's why the march, the peaceful march. >> the no. king's march is in response to trump's $100 million military parade and birthday celebration funded by taxpayers. it also touches on other white house policies, such as the current la protests around immigration. oakland's mile long march starts at the wilma chan park in chinatown and ends at city hall. >> to honor the legacy of wilma chan. her advocacy for immigrants. i think it was an honor for me to carry on this legacy, to go through chinatown, to lead this march. >> oakland. ready for the protest this weekend. do you think. >> oakland's ready? >> oakland mayor barbara lee says the city is working with the police department to prepare for saturday. she praised the protesters but warns of things getting out of hand, though she didn't elaborate on the

consequences. when asked. >> what is taking place here in america is very undemocratic and we have a right to protest through our first amendment rights, but we don't have a right to allow violence. destruction of property. >> scenes from tuesday night in oakland show how an anti-police protest ended with the business burglarized and a car set on fire. that's already raising concerns for oakland police about saturday. >> a lot of these protests are tend to get by people that come and blend into the crowd and become destructive. >> sergeant huiyin says he's confident opd can handle saturday's march. he adds this kind of violence impacts oakland's businesses. that's something neenah joiner knows all about. last july, she closed both her downtown oakland shops. she believes this isn't opd's problem alone. >> this is also a method for us to police ourselves. police can't come in and go 1 to 25 with people who are stealing. but the customers can actually do this. the customers can be

there and say, we're not standing for this anymore. >> in oakland, anser hassan abc seven news. >> a judge is ordering the release of a former columbia university graduate student in pro-palestinian protester mahmoud khalil has been held in an ice detention facility since he was arrested in march. the trump administration has been trying to deport him. khalil is a legal u.s. resident and hasn't been charged with a crime. in his ruling today, the judge says his continued detention is causing harm to his career, family and free speech rights. the government has until friday to appeal. >> president trump is expected to sign a measure tomorrow blocking california's vehicle emissions rules. the rule was meant to ban the sale of new gas powered cars by 2035, in an attempt to phase them out and curb tailpipe emissions and pollution from trucks. the timing of trump's signing was confirmed by an anonymous white house official. it comes as the administration is tied up in a number of conflicts with the state of california.

>> former movie mogul harvey weinstein has been convicted of one of the top charges in his sex crimes retrial, but acquitted of another. the former studio boss was found guilty of forcibly subjecting a woman to a criminal sex act in 2006. jurors said they are unable to reach a verdict on a rape charge involving a third woman, but the judge ordered them to continue deliberations tomorrow. weinstein's initial conviction five years ago was overturned last year and the case was sent back for retrial. the judge in the sean diddy combs sex trafficking trial is considering a request to dismiss one of the jurors. prosecutors asked for the dismissal, claiming a lack of candor, but combs's attorney called it a thinly veiled effort to dismiss a black juror. the judge says a decision on dismissal will be made by the end of the week. after hearing from both sides. >> in the north bay, a san rafael school board member was arrested yesterday accused of sexually assaulting a 16 year old student. 22 year old esai rodas is accused of molesting a minor in three separate

incidents in 2023. he was 20 at the time, working as a paraeducator at marin's community school. the school says they learned of the allegations last week when a staff member made a report. >> sometimes it has to deal with whether or not the victim feels comfortable with coming forward or when the allegation is learned. but as soon as the marin county office of education learned of the disclosure, they immediately notified us. >> rodas current school district says they have no knowledge of any misconduct occurring between rodas and any of their students. police say rodas has been released from marin county jail after posting bail. in the south bay now, fire investigators are trying to determine what sparked a grass fire in santa clara county. this is a time lapse video of the fire started about 3:00 today in the afternoon, burning about 200 acres along highway 152 at dinosaur point road. it took 100 firefighters to contain the flames. there are no reports of any damage, and no

one was hurt. >> at millbrae. to the list of bay area cities to adopt a camping ban as a way to deal with homelessness, the city council has voted to ban camping in tents and vehicles in all public places. they're also outlawing sitting or lying down, or loitering on public sidewalks and panhandling on the streets. violating the ordinance will lead to a misdemeanor charge. the law takes effect in just under 30 days. >> more to come here. the music world has lost one of its pioneers and legends. a look back at the remarkable career of beach boys founder brian wilson. >> and a little later, what does the future hold for san francisco schools? aaliyah melendez sat down with the superintendent to get some answers. i'm meteorologist. >> sandhya patel. gusty and below average today, but warmer weather is on the way. i'll have the forecast coming up when

opening night of les miserables. president trump appointed himself chairman of the kennedy center in february, and tonight's event was a fundraiser, and people paid up to $2 million for a gold level experience, which included premiere seats and a photo with president trump. the music world is mourning the loss of brian wilson, the genius behind the beach boys, the legendary singer and music writer's family shared word of his passing in a facebook post this morning, adding that they are at a loss for words. wilson's genius for melody arrangements and self-expression made him one of the most influential artists in the industry. he wrote lyrics to some enduring hits like surfin usa, california girls and good vibrations. those iconic songs helped shape california's image of sunshine, beaches and laid back vibes. >> those records start before jet travel, and california was a very remote place in 1962 and 63, uh- and a lot of the images

uh- and the most enduring images of california were formed by those records that brian did. >> right here, guys. >> wilson was 82. he had been suffering from neurological issues in his later years. >> the city of oakland has passed a $4.2 billion budget that funds core city services, but calls for cutbacks elsewhere. council members call the spending plan a back to the basics budget. it will keep all 25 oakland fire stations open, protect police staffing fund programs to fight blight and illegal dumping, and provide homeless services to clear encampments. the budget erases a record 265 million structural deficit over the next two years. >> we very quickly arrived at the idea that we need to do fewer things, but we need to do those things really well. and in particular, that is public safety. safe streets, blight,

take a look at this live view from our kgo roof camera. we are looking towards the ferry building and that flag is flapping around in the wind. it is gusting to 20 miles an hour at sfo 29 in concord, rio vista, you have a sustained onshore wind coming off the ocean 23 miles an hour. we did have stronger winds earlier in the day. now tonight we're going to continue to see the gusty winds going into tomorrow morning. they back off a bit and then by tomorrow afternoon evening they're going to pick right back up again. so with this windy pattern it's not exactly easy for those who suffer from allergies. so let's take a look. tree pollen is running moderate. juniper all over. olive and privet are the main culprits. grasses are also moderate. weeds and molds are nonexistent despite the wind. some of you may have noticed the haze in the atmosphere. we still have moderate air quality indicated by the yellow across parts of the bay area, and part of this is just the moisture in the air. but there have been a few fires that broke out today in the bay area, and

that could be adding to it. no air quality advisories or alerts right now. take a look at live doppler seven. we started out with a lot of fog this morning, but as we had expected, that fog layer just shrunk and most areas did get a chance to enjoy the sun. there were a few spots that continued to hang onto the fog, which is why today's highs near the coast and in the city only in the 50s inland areas made it up into the low 80s. here's a look at live doppler seven with the statewide picture. and we certainly have fog down in southern california as well. it is that time of year when people travel. it's summertime almost, and kids are out of school. it's going to be hot down in palm springs. 108 if you're heading to tahoe, 71 degrees 90 in sacramento. live view from san jose camera where it is 57 degrees right now 53 in the city, 56 in oakland. it's pretty nice there. sfo some fog there, 50 for santa rosa, napa, concord, livermore, petaluma. you're at 46 degrees. and a beautiful view from tam cam. overnight gusty and cloudy areas tomorrow sunny and warmer for most. and your father's

you have already cut. where else can you cut? >> so part of the budget reduction strategy was to offer our supplemental early retirement plan. we received 345 people who took the early retirement incentive. and so because of that, we are able to preserve teachers in every classroom. we are able to have social workers in our schools. we are able to have counselors and paraeducators in the classrooms to support our students. >> but, you know, a lot of those cuts or retirements came from the central office yet. how is that going to affect the classroom? >> and that does mean that things might be slower because we're not we will take a longer time to send the mail to our school sites. it will take

longer for processing of different applications and forms. we also had to make reductions to things that are not key and essential to academic success for our students. >> last year, when it was announced that the board and the former superintendent, matt wayne, were closing some schools, the district paused the closures because of the lack of transparency in the process. wayne resigned and sue was then appointed superintendent. yet she has said that the conversation of closing schools will have to eventually resume because student enrollment is not expected to bounce back this year. we didn't close schools, but are we going to see some schools? will the district have to close some schools? >> eventually, we have to evaluate our school building and whether or not the schools, the schools that we have are meeting the needs of our students. and that is something that i will be

doing in the coming years. >> the school district also has to contend with threats of reducing funding coming from the federal government. about 5% of the school district's budget comes from washington. if the trump administration is successful at holding funds for your dei policies, how bad could it get for the school district? >> we're not going to be distracted, though, by this. we're going to stay focused on making sure that we deliver a balanced budget that will satisfy the state so that we can we can get out of state oversight so that we can become a solvent school district and stand on our own two feet. >> what's the school district going to look like in two years? >> one thing that they've said over and over is, can you please just make sure that we go back to the basics of educating our students, making sure that our teachers have the resources and
