through the latest on the firefight and the new efforts to prevent fires across the bay area. >> we're going to begin with the evacuations in san jose. firefighters are finally scaling them back tonight after hours of fighting a fire that burned dangerously close to homes in the foothills east of san jose. it sparked just after four along ranch place near old piedmont road. it spread quickly in that dry grass, burning more than 90 acres in just a few hours. containment is up to 75%, and firefighters will be working through the night to get that to 100%. >> there are also evacuations in the sierra foothills tonight for the bonanza fire, as it's being called. it's burning south of highway 50 outside shingle springs in el dorado county. the fire has burned 180 acres so far, damaging a number of cars but no homes. containment is at 10%. and in the east bay, firefighters are putting out hot spots after a fire at the old pittsburgh golf club. it burned five acres there this afternoon

before firefighters got it under control. >> and we know fires are going to happen tonight. we're looking at the strategies for preventing them right now. leaders in berkeley are considering dramatic new steps. after hours of hearing from neighbors, the city council is discussing whether to ban everything flammable from within five feet of homes in high fire risk areas. it's focused mostly on the neighborhoods near tilden regional park. there was a large turnout at tonight's meeting, both in support of and in opposition of the plan. >> forcing residents to destroy long standing structures, landscaping and fences, all without any compensation. it also has a disparate impact on the elderly and disabled residents, many of whom lived on fixed incomes and will not be able to comply. >> i don't want to end up like the pacific palisades or altadena, and i see this as an extremely critical thing to saving my home. >> if the council passes the plan, residents have fewer than 12 months to get in compliance. similar rules are expected to

roll out statewide eventually. >> in the north bay. an unusual new crew is at work preventing fires. the santa rosa fire department has hired more than a thousand goats to eat up dry grass and brush. they're set to clear fuel from 130 acres across eight different locations. our partners at the press democrat report the goats are paid for through a settlement with p-g-and-e's over past fires, the city asks people not to feed the goats if they see them, they have plenty to munch on already. they'll be fine. >> rising temperatures are leaving all that brush dry and so ready to burn. it was warm out today and the heat is sticking with us tomorrow. abc seven news meteorologist andy patel is here with a look at how high the temperatures are going. sandhya. >> yeah, we're talking about mid 90s tomorrow, so let's take a look at the fire danger index. while tonight it is low to moderate for the bay area. look at what happens tomorrow afternoon. as the heat builds. air mass is drier. we're going to see some moderate to high pockets of fire danger, especially with a little breeze

going. so it was a summer warmth today, no doubt about it. temperatures came up upper 80s to low 90s in concord, fairfield, santa rosa. these were some of the warmer spots. 65 in the city, 61 in half moon bay. take a look at where those numbers are heading tomorrow. 93 degrees in santa rosa 95 antioch. so it is definitely going to get hot. 70 san francisco, oakland and palo alto, san jose 83 degrees. tonight a beautiful view from our sutro tower camera looking at the golden gate bridge. and here are your current readings. mid 50s san francisco and oakland san jose, you're at 59 and concord 66 degrees. those numbers are going to go way up. i'll be back with the high temperatures coming right up. dan. >> okay, sandhya, thanks a lot. the biggest jewelry heist in u.s. history. and investigators just found out. they say who pulled it off? seven men are accused of stealing $100 million worth of gold, diamonds, rubies, emeralds and luxury watches from a transport truck. the crew is accused of following the truck

from a gem show in san mateo, all the way to a truck stop in lubbock on the grapevine, then grabbing the jewels. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez has reaction now from the head of the gem show. >> seven men are now being charged in an unprecedented jewelry heist estimated at $100 million. this is body cam video from the night of the theft back in 2022. >> this is a jewelry heist right out of the ocean's 11 playbook. and what you have here is a very sophisticated group. >> authorities say the suspects broke into a brinks semi truck while it was parked at a grapevine truck stop. high-end gems and luxury watches were being transported from a jewelry show in san mateo to pasadena. according to the indictment, the suspects had scouted the jewelry show and followed the brinks truck 300 miles south. >> i didn't pick up on being followed, but i felt like i had something that the jewelry show like, there was somebody kind of looking at me like, kind of dogged me, staring them right in the eyes and just sitting there.

doors were open and we were getting loaded. they just felt weird. >> arnold duke, president of the international gem and jewelry show, was elated to hear. three years later, suspects have been charged. >> it's the best news i could have ever dreamed of. this thing has really hit us and our whole family really hard, and we are so thankful and delighted. >> 14 exhibitors from the show in san mateo lost merchandise. >> well, it was way over $100 million. i don't have exact figures. and now, with historic gold prices, this is all up another 30% in value since the time it was stolen. we just. we're anxiously awaiting to learn what might have been recovered. >> but exactly how much was stolen continues to be up for debate. some of the jewelers who lost inventory are suing brinks, and brinks is suing back brings a suit, says the jeweler signed contracts saying the merchandise was worth only $6.45 million. we

spoke with former prosecutor and legal analyst steven clark. >> brinks will argue that the contractual value of these goods is what they're going to pay, not what the jewelers are saying the value of these goods is. now. >> several of the suspects are also accused of stealing over $200,000 worth of samsung electronics and $57,000 worth of apple airtags in the months before the jewelry heist in the south bay. lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> now to developing news out of the middle east tonight. as fears of a wider war grow intense, israeli airstrikes are targeting iran's capital. the two countries are still exchanging heavy fire. president trump is now demanding iran's unconditional, unconditional surrender. abc news reporter melissa don has the latest. >> tensions escalating in the middle east, as more missiles from iran are coming into israel, lighting up the night

has been an iconic symbol of pride month in san francisco. but on tuesday afternoon, that icon was vandalized. >> if it can happen here in san francisco, of all places, think what can happen in other parts of the country. >> patrick carney is the co-founder of the pink triangle. he says he got a call tuesday afternoon from police telling him someone was defacing the triangle with black spray paint before being taken into custody. >> it's been graffitied a couple of times before, and it was set on fire in 2009. they burned the whole center of the pink triangle up. >> this year marks the 30th anniversary of the triangle in san francisco, a project that consists of 175 bright pink tarps and is meant to serve as a reminder of the persecution queer people have faced throughout history. the nazis used the pink triangle to identify gay people in their concentration camps, carney tells us. despite the setback to this year's project, he's already thinking of how to fix it. >> so it's probably just easier if i go down to a hardware store and match the pink color and just temporarily fix it. >> condemnation of the vandalism

helped remove the guy from that very tight space. he was taken to the hospital. police then arrested him for an outstanding warrant on top of the burglary charges. >> more than a thousand health care workers at ucsf benioff children's hospital in oakland are set to walk off the job tomorrow. they're going on strike over changes in take home pay. under new union contracts, the work stoppage means the hospital systems clinics in walnut creek, san ramon, brentwood and emeryville will be closed. ucsf benioff says the contract changes will support the hospital's growth and give workers better long term benefits. >> in the meantime, police arrested nearly a dozen union workers protesting looming budget cuts in san francisco. the workers chanted during a city meeting and tried to occupy a staircase at city hall. >> no cuts, no, no cuts. no, no defend. our city, >> officers handcuffed the protesters and led them out just

before 4 p.m. mayor daniel lurie's budget proposal calls for cutting about 1400 positions, most of which are vacant. the unions want the city to tap into its reserves and slash private contracts instead. but the mayor says cuts are necessary to deal with the city's ballooning deficit. >> celebrity chef and longtime food network host anne burrell has died. she was 55 years old. she was best known as the co-host of worst cooks in america. burrell developed a passion for cooking early in life, inspired by her mother's home cooked meals and tv icon julia child. she graduated from the culinary institute of america in 1996 and spent years working in kitchens. she also taught cooking and wrote two cookbooks. her representatives say she died at her home in new york this morning, though they did not share her cause of death. >> president trump is planning to put off the tiktok ban for a third time this year. the social media company is up against a thursday deadline to find a new owner or be banned in the united

states. the white house says the president will now give tiktok 90 more days until mid september. lawmakers from both parties passed the law setting the ultimatum, citing national security concerns, with tiktok's chinese owners. now back in april, white house officials thought they were close to a deal to spin off the company with u.s. ownership. china, though, backed out after president trump's tariff announcement. >> there's a new push to prevent a viral. >> prank from happening again in one peninsula city. >> hi, this is elon musk. you know, they say money can't buy happiness. and yeah, okay, i guess that's true. god knows i've tried. but it can buy a cybertruck. and that's pretty sick, right? >> back in april, someone hacked crosswalk signals in redwood city, menlo park and palo alto. they played out ai generated audio, impersonating elon musk and meta ceo mark zuckerberg. all three cities had to temporarily disable the audio feature. palo alto online reports redwood city and caltrans have fixed the security

flaw that the hackers used in order to take over. >> peacocks are overwhelming one coastal city in southern california. city leaders in rancho palos verdes think it's time for some of them to go. the peacock population has exploded in the last year, so the city is planning to catch and relocate several dozen of these birds. >> when we set up a trap, it is in a resident's backyard. they call us if a bird gets trapped and we pick up on the same day. our main goal is safely rehoming these peacocks to loving homes who really want them. we start in september. we don't trap during breeding season. we don't want to separate moms from chicks, mothers from their eggs, their nests. >> the peacocks will be brought to farms and ranches from bakersfield to san diego county. they're kind of interesting to watch. we've got wild turkeys by the dozen all over my street. i've never seen a peacock. >> yeah. interesting. they're fun to look at. they certainly are. all right, let's check on

our weather. >> yes. meteorologist sandhya patel is here. obviously, we talked about some fires burning around the area tonight because of the hot conditions. sandhya. >> yeah, the brush is really getting dry. the finer fuels. and then when you add the heat to it. fire danger is always a concern around this time of year. i do want to show you a stunning view. good evening, everyone from our mount tam cam city by the bay tonight is visible. it is clear across the entire bay area, with the exception of a few locations near the coast where the fog is beginning to regroup. so today it was a warmer day. high pressure came in. it is going to continue to build northward, and as a result, we are going to see some dangerous heat heat advisories in southern california and excessive extreme heat warnings. excuse me. for the eastern portion of california and parts of the desert southwest. look at these temperatures. if you're traveling tomorrow, 118 in palm springs, 116 needles, 110 in death valley. triple digits

through the sacramento fresno area up towards redding. very pleasant. 85 in los angeles and 79 in tahoe. so that area of high pressure builds in a little more, and the temperatures will rise a few more degrees. so it's going to get hot here in the bay area, but nothing like around parts of the state. on live doppler seven, we do have some patches of fog. by morning we're going to see more near the coastline. look at these temperatures. it's pretty comfortable out there from the 50s all the way to the 70s around the region. as we take a look from our exploratorium camera. skies are clear here in san francisco. tomorrow, hot inland, warmer near the bay. overnight fog returns to the coast and friday. summer solstice begins at 742 in the evening. tomorrow morning, when you get going, watch out for that fog. temperatures will be in the 50s and 60s. there may even be a little mist and drizzle near the coast, but quickly, by the lunch hour, you're warming up into the 70s and 80s away from the beaches. heading into the afternoon hours. we'll even see some low to mid 90s, and then later on in
