storm on lake tahoe. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan. >> ashley and i'm ama daetz. tonight we are learning more about the family's deep ties to the tech industry. >> they died saturday when their luxury powerboat capsized in very violent waves. california's deadliest boating accident in six years. only two survivors made it to shore. >> abc seven news reporter j.r. stone spent the night talking with the victim's friends, neighbors and former coworkers. >> flowers at the home of redwood city couple terry pickles and paula bozinovic, who both died when their boat capsized during saturday's storm along lake tahoe. their son, 37 year old josh pickles of san francisco, also among the eight victims. the doordash executive is pictured here in between his mom and dad. >> i was like, oh my gosh. and then paula terry. and then i saw joshua. i was like, oh my gosh, it's them. you know? and it was just it's hard to it's really a hard pill to swallow when you see that. >> vinney chopra is a childhood

friend of the family. chopra's parents ran a restaurant in redwood city called little india. he says the pickles family would often come in. >> i remember them being at, you know, some of my very early birthday parties playing like video games upstairs while they were dining because i had a sega genesis upstairs when i was with my parents and the restaurant, you know, and he would josh would come up and play. i just remember josh's mom, paula. she was really fun, very lively. >> friends of paula's tell me. she worked for apple for many years before retiring. this picture was taken at an event nearly 18 years ago. the family was actually celebrating her 71st birthday when the storm hit. according to a family spokesperson, neighbors tell us they walked their two dogs every day and always stopped to chat, saying they were kind and would often go boating. those in placer county are remembering josh pickles uncle, 71 year old pete bays of lincoln. >> you couldn't ask for a better neighbor. always willing to watch my house. always willing

to watch the kids. like stella said he helped with with the dogs, my yard, garbage can, parking spots, you name it. he he would help you. and he's just a just a great guy. >> the family spokesperson says josh's wife and seven month old daughter skipped the boating outing, instead staying on shore. in a statement, his wife jordan said we are devastated by this tragedy. no words can express the pain and anguish we feel knowing their lives were lost during what was meant to be a joyful time on the lake. >> it's really sad to hear and i just wanted to, you know, put out that word that like, you know, with, with the whole with, you know, all three of them passing away and his uncle as well, you know, with and the friends, like, i just wanted to make it make sure that people know that they're a great family. they're going to be really missed by by everyone. and they they touch a lot of people. josh was a great guy. >> i know you'll be thinking about them, but let's turn your

attention now to something else. election night in san jose, voters are deciding who will represent downtown on the city council there, filling omar torres's seat after he resigned. remember, amid child molestation allegations. the first results tonight show anthony close with a significant lead. he has 4400 votes to gabby chavez lopez's 2400. it's a huge turnaround from the primary, where tortillas made it into the top two by just a handful of votes. so it's been a good night for him. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez is live from our san jose bureau, with new reaction from both candidates. lauren. >> yeah, dan. as of right now, anthony tortillas, a candidate who entered this election race with really no institutional support, has this massive lead. now, polls for the special election closed at eight tonight. i talked with both candidates. >> we are obviously feeling great about the early results here as we await the final count. but.

>> cheers rang out as early voting results showed anthony tortillas is ahead in san jose's special election. district three encompasses the heart of downtown. >> the district has been through a lot over the past several months, over the past year, so focused again on just directly building those relationships with voters, as well as running a corporate free campaign. i think that's a message that resonated with a lot of folks. >> of the nearly 6500 ballots submitted, preliminary results show tortillas received 64.8% of the vote. he is not claiming victory yet, but sounded confident. >> i've run a policy centric campaign focused on housing affordability and homelessness and public safety. so looking forward to lead on those issues. on council. >> gabby chavez lopez says she will not concede until all votes are in. >> i think every vote matters. we need to make sure that every ballot is counted. we've learned time and time again that it's very important that we continue to count those absentee ballots, those mail in ballots. they need to be verified. we're optimistic, always and excited

temperatures are rising in your 24 hour accuweather forecast. a midweek warm up begins tomorrow. abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel has a look at our weather. sandhya. >> yeah, and ama, after today's cooldown, maybe you're ready for that warm up. it is coming our way tomorrow and it's going to continue for a few days. right now though, a live look at 80 from emeryville, and you'll notice there's a lot of fog around visibility down to just over two miles and a half moon bay. so watch out tomorrow morning we do have a nice delta breeze going 25 miles an hour. that's part of the reason why it was cooler today, along with lingering clouds. coastal flood advisory until 1 a.m. tomorrow. minor low lying flooding due to the high tide, so be careful if you're going to be out and about. and here's a look at your planner. gray and drizzly tomorrow morning. temperatures in the 50s, a few 40s embedded in there. and then sun will break through around the bay and inland. by noontime. it is a warmer 50s to upper 80s and then turning breezy later on in the evening. i'll be back to show you exactly how hot it's going to get in some areas. coming right up. >> dan okay, sandy, thanks very

much. we'll touch base shortly. stanford medicine is pausing gender related surgeries for young people as the trump administration works to limit access to that care. stanford cited threats to grants for hospitals that provide gender affirming care for transgender children. these surgeries are very rare for children and reserved for cases of extreme gender dysphoria. stanford says it took the step to protect its patients and its providers. procedures stopped on june 2nd, right as pride month started. >> police in san jose are linking dozens of crimes to six teenagers. investigators say the teens were responsible for this break-in at a liquor store, and a rash of other attempted carjackings and car thefts. they've arrested three of the teens, along with two adults accused of trying to hide evidence. >> these crimes were not isolated nor impulsive. they were calculated, coordinated and carried out with stunning aggression. in these burglaries, stolen vehicles were used as weapons, rammed through storefronts or chained to

security doors, which were then ripped clean off entire businesses destroyed in a matter of minutes. >> police say. in many cases, the cost of repairs to targeted businesses was more than the value of the stolen items. investigators recovered money, replica guns, ammunition and heavy duty chains used to rip the doors off those businesses. >> new developments tonight in one of several criminal cases linked to a cult like group based in the bay area. a woman accused in a deadly shootout with border patrol agents appeared in court today. investigators say teresa youngblood fired the bullet that killed a border patrol agent in vermont back in january. that killing happened days after youngblood's fiance was accused of killing a landlord in vallejo. both suspects are tied to a group known as the zion's. they both pleaded not guilty in their respective criminal casesa story we've been following all year, months after sonoma state said it would cut all sports plus nearly two dozen degree

programs, lawmakers just reached a deal to bring some of them back. abc seven news reporter tim johns explains. >> north bay elected officials and csu leadership are announcing a $45 million lifeline for sonoma state university. the cash strapped school has been making national headlines for months, after budget woes forced it to cut its entire athletic department and several degree programs. >> we need things to keep the students engaged and connected to university, which which leads to more involvement in school spirit in in all the clubs. >> marcus ziemer is the school's men's soccer coach. he says while the specific details of how the money will be used are still undetermined, he believes some sports should be able to come back. for ziemer. news of the one-time investment is bittersweet. he tells abc seven news his contract with the school is up at the end of the month, and that he spent a part of his final soccer season trying to help his players find new schools to attend. one of those players was jack chapman. >> we still had a spring season, so i still had to focus on being an athlete, but i also had to

focus on school as well. >> chapman says. the experience of being a student athlete while also trying to find a new school was stressful. he tells me while he's happy sonoma state is getting the money, he thinks the school could have a hard time recruiting more student athletes. >> now it will get other athletes thinking, is this a guarantee? is something like this going to happen again? is this the right decision for me? >> the university declined abc seven news request for an interview tuesday, but praised the new money in a statement that calls it, quote, an investment in the future of the university as it develops cutting edge programs to meet healthcare, data science and other regional workforce needs in the coming years, ziemer says while nothing is for certain, he's fairly confident sonoma state soccer program will come back with or without him helping to change a decision he believes should never have been made in the first place. >> i want to see it like we were 9500 students thriving. it's a beautiful place, beautiful destination spot and hopefully that that can happen. >> in the north bay. tim johns, abc seven news. >> the cease fire in the middle

was not destroyed because it was moved before the u.s. struck. according to a preliminary report from the defense intelligence agency and u.s. central command, 900 pounds of near weapons grade uranium is unaccounted for, according to the international atomic energy agency. with pentagon early intelligence indicating iran's centrifuges are intact, with the bombings sealing off entrances to two of the nation's nuclear facilities rather than destroying any underground structures. house democratic leader hakeem jeffries, upset that congress wasn't briefed before the bombings. >> the american people deserve to know the facts and the truth as it related to the decision to strike iran without securing congressional approval. >> republican senator tom cotton pressed a senior central command official today. if iran still poses a severe threat to u.s. troops and americans around the

as an independent after his indictment on corruption charges. the trump administration dropped the case against adams. >> a new variant of covid has people complaining of one very unpleasant symptom. health experts say the so-called nimbus variant is giving people a really bad sore throat, some describing it as razor blade throat, sometimes feeling hoarse. fortunately, hospitalization remains low. health experts say there's no evidence the new variant is more deadly, though it may be more contagious. but our mild winter may also be to blame for our slight rise in covid cases. >> because fewer people had covid this winter, that there's less immunity immediately in the community. and that may be the reason. >> to prevent a summer surge, experts say. to test yourself if you feel sick, stay away from vulnerable people and everyone six months and older should get the vaccine. >> a girl scout troop had to be

airlifted out of the mountains of monterey county after one of the girls got hurt, the chp says. the troop was on an overnight hiking trip in the los padres national forest this weekend, when one of the girl scouts fell down a canyon on sunday, a navy helicopter rescued the injured scout. a chp helicopter then swooped in to rescue the six remaining girls and their scout leader. the chp says the group was lost but otherwise unhurt. the injured scout went to the hospital. wow. glad they're okay. yeah. >> they're okay. all right. so return to a full look at the weather forecast. >> meteorologist sandhya patel has the scoop for sandhya. >> yeah. ama and dan. we had a sweater weather today across parts of the bay area. upper 50s to the low 80s. but we're going to change that up. all right. let's take a look at these live pictures right now. pretty much how you're going to start your morning showing you the low clouds and the fog. visibility is going to be impacted for the morning commute. so if your commute takes you across 8-80 be prepared. and even along the coastline, we are seeing some

heavier fog. so right now the onshore winds are going. you can see the marine layer is all the way in across the bay shoreline at this hour, and it's going to continue to spread out during the overnight hours. your temperatures at this hour in the 50s and 60s for most locations. it was daily record setting heat across much of the east coast, and all time records in newark 103, boston 102 and providence 100 for the entire month of june. some of the other high temperatures 99. in new york that was a record 99 degrees in d.c. 102. you can see there in boston, 94 in chicago. so the midwest, to the northeast, they're dealing with the summer swelter. dangerous heat. and when you account for the heat indices, it's actually really, really uncomfortable. still 92 in d.c, 89 in philadelphia. these numbers were way higher earlier today. extreme heat warnings are in effect for parts of the east coast, as you can

the hockey hall of fame today, spent 15 of his 24 year nhl career with the sharks. jumbo, sixth all time in games played in nhl history, has an mvp and scoring title on his resume. funny thing today, the hall of fame kept calling like 10 to 15 times and joe would not answer. probably thought it was a spam call. eventually did. the induction ceremony will be in november. the warriors have the 41st pick in the nba draft, which begins tomorrow. not expecting any flashy moves from them, the dubs made their big maneuver when they acquired jimmy butler back in february, with steph curry, draymond green and jimmy all in their mid 30s. the time to win is now. >> i think we did a nice job of figuring it out and putting ourselves in a position to whether it was last year's playoffs and moving forward to have a chance with with draymond, with steph, with jimmy. that's our goal. we want to be in the conversation. we need to improve this roster, keep getting better. but i think we've remedied and put the ship in the right place right now where that's a possibility. >> abc will carry the first round tomorrow night, hosted by
